The Morning Rant - Misanthropic Edition

MisanHumrant (1).jpg

***

Is there something in the water or the air? Is the moon aligned in poor angles? My week of interacting with the "Customer Service Industry" is today's rant.

***

On Monday I went to a HVAC shop looking for a particular item. The window claims that they have a showroom and parts. So I thought, I will go in there and see if they have the part I'm looking for. I was greeted by a crabby woman demanding, "What do you want?"

My response was "I'm looking for 1/2" hose with a male and female ends. Length isn't a problem." She left for the back of the building and came back with a hose with a 3/8" and 1/2" ends.

"Excuse me, this isn't what I need." I stated respectfully.

"Well, that's all we have." with a huff she exclaimed.

"Can the plumber make me up one?", I asked politely.

I received a snotty, "No." And he's not here anyway. Go to the local hardware store", she sneered.

I muttered under my breath that was the fucking reason I was here because the hardware store didn't have what I needed. It's OK they didn't have the part, but I'm not sorry for getting her off her fat ass to assist me.

I know the plumber; next time I see him I'm going to mention my experience with "Jane". I've spent a shit ton of money with his firm starting in 2018 when we put up our new house.

So you're saying no big deal Mis. Hum. This now brings me to my next wondrous retail experience.

Wednesday the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum and I went on our every other week date of grocery shopping. It was so pleasant I sent the following to the Supermarket HQ:

Dear (Grocery Store name withheld):
If your company were ever to produce a film entitled "This Is Not How To Provide Customer Service" our experience at your (Location withheld for Rant) store would have been a feature film.

First of all we arrived to find our future check out clerk "Jane" brushing her hair while standing behind her cash register. That was not very appealing to say the least. It is also quite unprofessional. Subsequently, my wife and I proceeded to fill our grocery cart with approximately $225 worth of food. I think we spend approximately $6,000 a year at your store.

We probably should have gone to a different line, but the line we chose was the shortest one. Guess who was working there? If you said "Jane", you are correct. When we arrived at the check-out lane which "Jane" was working at she was waiting on another customer. Her conversation with the customer in front of us was quite audible. She was loud enough that we heard her say, "I miss working at Walmart." Oh boy I thought, nothing like a disgruntled employee. I'm not sure what ever happened to satisfactory customer service and just keeping your mouth shut if you don't have anything positive to say.

The proverbial frosting on the cake was when she threw our two boxes of cereal, two loaves of bread and a bag of Baked Lays. Cereal and chips break enough during regular shipping and handling without help from the check out employee. Even the bagger said something to her about the bread toss. My wife was not happy and told her she would appreciate it if she wouldn't throw our food. Your employee's response: "It's been a busy day, I was in a hurry." No apology. And I'm sure if there would have been one it would have been half-hearted with excuses as to her behavior.

If this was my first experience at your store, I doubt if I would ever return. When we travel about the same to get to (Competitor Store A) or (Competitor Store B) or Your Store it makes one think about checking out the competition. As it is, we will stand in line somewhere else rather than be waited on by this employee.

I will provide you the following information so you know I'm not making up some story. Our receipt states the following:
(Deleted for rant)

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Mis. Hum.

Over 24 hours have passed since I emailed this. Have I been contacted? ***SNORT*** This retail chain is now part of the Rant on the world wide web. So the answer is no.

Is it too much to expect to be treated competently, respectfully and courteously? I'm afraid it is. If we can't or don't expect the people we deal with on a regular basis to have any of these qualities, how can we expect the elected officials in our state houses and Washington, D.C. to be any better? We don't and we continue our slide away from American Exceptionalism.

10 Wow. After last night this is so my topic.

So, my wife finally got fed up with our HP wifi printer (no cable) always reporting "Offline" (even the times that she can manage to print to it), so she sends my son out for another printer and all he can bring home is a HP wifi printer.

Their "Setup Instructions" are large postcards with 3 languages, so they don't have a lot of space to tell you how to do it in English of course.

They tell you to download HP Smart which will "Guide through a step by step process", but it fails on network issues and "Something's wrong" and really doesn't even cover how to insert ink cartridges.

So, I spent a lot of fruitless time chatting with a support rep.

26 As a long time customer service type I whole heartedly apologize for how you were treated.

I've been a manager as well as a rep, and if any of MY workers had even THOUGHT of acting like that, they would have been called on the carpet and if it was repeated they would have been seeking other employment.

Of course, my own experience on the other end of the phone has also sensitized me to how I'm treated as well and, sorry to say, I've been on the receiving end of some garbage CS.

Hang in there, I know there are still plenty of good reps out there. Sorry you had such a crap week.

My favorite part is that support is pretty much exactly like the cashiers at McDonalds who don't know what anything is but only push the pictogram buttons.

As someone who knows a great deal about tech as a hobby, it's incredibly frustrating to have to speak to customer service in Bangladesh and have to spend 45 minutes to eventually get them to do the thing that I told them they needed to do in literally the first 30 seconds of the phone call.

29 I expect I'll get flamed for this, but I'll say it anyway: too many kids have been indulged and cossetted all their lives, never being disciplined or even sternly spoken to.

Parents either will not or cannot control themselves, indulging in some ridiculous endless adolescense, and therefore can't control their kids, who grow up into the shallow, self-centered, entitled pricks who think work is an unneeded and irksome interruption from the easy, blissful life that is their right.

I'm not advocating busting a cap in your kid's ass when they step out of line, but a few swats on the hindquarters would have stopped a lot of this noisome behavior in the bud. IMO and YMMV.

Turn on printer. Go to settings/devices/ printer. Open specific printer. From the drop down menu, click printer. There is a heading that says "use printer offline." If it is checked, uncheck it. That might fix it.

+1. I do this, more in meatspace than on the phone (since, perversely, a lot of call center systems count a supervisor request as an escalation *and* it adds to total call time, making an "I'm happy and you're great and I want to tell your boss" count *against* the agent according to the automatic performance measures).

Oh, totally, and after failing--or long delays--to answer pretty simple questions I directly asked her, I ended up fixing my own problem.

I spotted a piece of packing cardboard that old HP instructions would have told me to remove as part of the setup process, and removed it--after manually moving the cartridge carriage (which is not something I've ever been instructed to do on another printer).

In general there's not much of a pathway for people to have developed moderate levels of expertise in various jobs and end up working in places like Home Depot these days. If a person has skilled labor training, well those jobs pay very well, they're not going to end up in Home Depot. A lower level of skill isn't something you'd learn at high school, it's pretty all or nothing specialization through colleges or trade schools.

So in summary, why would you expect a Home Depot worker to know anything? They won't have any training related to carpentry, plumbing, etc. The job requirement is literally a HS Diploma or GED.

89 Off topic, but maybe sort of on topic.

I read this morning that there is some kind of crack in a steel beam on the I-40 bridge across the Mississippi at Memphis.
Vehicle traffic is closed until repair, and probably even worse, barge traffic has been halted because the bridge might fall on a barge. According to what I read, approx 800 barges are now backed up (north and south) on the Mississsippi.
A picture shot of the crack is something that internet experts claim could be welded, braced, repaired in short order.
As this will be a union job with prevailing wages, the bridge might be closed for months, with barge traffic shut on the river.
So expect more things to be screwed up because of this.
This is Biden's America. You're welcome.
And back on topic, I had a wonderful experience at Menard's yesterday, as the checkout clerk had to have an extended conversation with the women in front of me, while I waited to pay for my stuff.
Yeah, it went on and on.

There is an unmet demand out there for reliable printers. Instead of paying $34 for a POS printer, that needs two $40 ink cartridges when the included ones go dry, which makes it economic to just throw it away, why not sell a $340 printer that uses cheap bulk ink, and includes an iron-clad promise from the manufacturer to provide parts and service at a fair price for no less than ten years?

I'd like to see some outfit sell a clone of the old HP PaintJet tractor-feed printer. Update it to use ink reservoirs, give it a USB port, and wifi capabilities, and maybe a provision to print hand-fed card stock, too.

The garbage company here recently changed the address to which payments are to be sent. It's a standard monthly payment and I have it set up to go out automatically from my bank. I never look at the bill, knowing it's covered.

So when the address changed my payment went to the old address. The garbage company actually got it. But according to them, "We sent it back." My service was discontinued and I watched the truck sail by on Monday before I realized something was amiss. Of course by then the bank had wiped out the account so I couldn't simply change the address. I had to set it up again, with an extra to cover the one I'd missed.

In all my years of paying bills I have never, ever had a company refuse my money.

While I'm whining, let me throw one in about the dentist whose appointment reminder program calls people on a Sunday. Being an atheist that shouldn't bother me but even heathens should be entitled to one day of peace per week.

I buy quality when I can. Somewhat related to your wish there is a company making HP clones of their fantastic calculators from the 80's. Company is Swiss Micros and I have their DM-41 which is an update to HP's old HP-41. Magnificent machine. Metal case, multiline display, interfaces via USB with your PC. They are doing well with it as far as I know so there is definitely a market for people that want to sell quality.

The article claims that they want to cut personnel to save money for use on new weapon systems. My bet is that within a couple years those programs are all drastically reduced or killed outright, since a smaller force means smaller orders, which means suddenly rising unit costs, which because an excuse for claiming that the program is a waste of money.

I was bored one day and decided to toy with the "Microsoft" rep who phoned to tell me that they had detected a virus on my computer.

First, I asked which one since we have multiple. That ate up a couple minutes.

Then they asked my to press the windows icon on the bottom left of my screen. I told them I was running Ubuntu and there was no icon on the bottom left. They repeated the instructions a couple times and then got a "supervisor".

Took them 10 minutes before the disconnected.

The article claims that they want to cut personnel to save money for use on new weapon systems. My bet is that within a couple years those programs are all drastically reduced or killed outright, since a smaller force means smaller orders, which means suddenly rising unit costs, which because an excuse for claiming that the program is a waste of money.

I had a laser printer for a while. It cacked out. And I really needed color. The big problem with most home/small business printers is the sheet feeder. It is damned hard to build a sheet feeder that will reliably feed single sheets of paper from a stack, especially if static cling is present. Tractor feed printers were a little more trouble to load initially, but dead-nuts reliable until the paper was exhausted.

This trick still works, but you have to do a little bit more work than that. You have to make the VM seem like its actually a daily driver computer. Lots of files on the desktop, folders, programs that don't come bundled standard (ninite is good for this). Some of the smarter ones will even open up This PC -> Properties where it'll tell you if it's a VM. I think there's a way to change that value as well.

The article claims that they want to cut personnel to save money for use on new weapon systems. My bet is that within a couple years those programs are all drastically reduced or killed outright, since a smaller force means smaller orders, which means suddenly rising unit costs, which because an excuse for claiming that the program is a waste of money.
=========
I whole-heartedly agree with the military weakening itself on flesh and blood soldiers versus the Republic at large. However! I think the force reductions are also predicated on the purchase of more combat-capable drones, UPVs, and actual robots. The Military-Industrial Complex has been very pro-automation these past few years. It's easier to fight endless wars against Eastasia and Eurasia when there are fewer meatbag soldiers doing the actual fighting.

Remember when Obama said that sin was when he did something that he thought was out of step with what he usually preferred to do?

-------

OK, for argument's sake, let's talk about Lady YD. She is a reflexively good and kind person. For her that definition would hold - the broader definition of "sin" would line up very closely with "uncharacteristic behavior for Lady YD."

But I have a sneaking suspicion that Obama might not be a good guy. Like, maybe he's a shifty grifter who sins all the time.

255 This trick still works, but you have to do a little bit more work than that.

Yup. It's easy enough to do, though. There at least to be a number of honeypot VMs available for download that you could just change the serial number on. They're probably still out there. But really, that play is all about the love of the game...

Yeah that was the big reveal. He's not a Christian, not even close. Its worse than that. They define sin as what they think to be right and wrong at the moment and that means you're not just wrong if you disagree, you're evil. Leftists don't think you're confused or of a different opinion, they believe you are sinning.

And unlike actual Christianity which teaches redemption, love, and that sin is against God rather than us... they believe you're sinning against them.

Posted by: Colorado Alex in Exile at May 14, 2021 11:00 AM (jOcSX)

Well, that's the scam, right there. They sell cheap-ass printers for an unbelievably low price, and they come with a pair of "demo" ink cartridges that are basically only a quarter full. When they run out, you have to buy the regular cartridges, and the pair will cost you more than the entire printer did.

And then, there's the "death gene" built into cartridges, that stops them from working after a certain time has elapsed, even if still near-full.

A week later I got an e-mail telling me that I would soon be receiving some coupons in a separate e-mail. Coupons. No apology, nothing, but they're going to send me coupons. After I just said I would never darken their doors again.

Bet you can guess the kicker. The coupon e-mail never arrived.

Was just talking to my landlord about this last week. His BiL had his mountain cabin heavily damaged in one of the Sierra Nevada wildfires a few months ago. After getting the repair estimate, it was going to take a couple of months before the contractor could get him fit into the schedule.

When lumber prices went through the roof last month, the contractor had to requote for an additional $10k or so.

Folks who were doing a couple of kitchens at a time are now managing a half dozen and seeking decent help. My experience has been that the folks left to do anything are ones that would just as soon not work in the first place as long as Uncle Sugar funds a staycation.

And wow, forget it when you are dealing with one of the big companies (cable providers, big banks, chain stores, etc.)

443 I'm of the opinion that you should never have to "flex" to a company over how much money you spend at them on a yearly basis to get good service.

I get folks telling me how much money they spend at my business every year all the time. We're account based, so I can easily check the history (which I do, every time, more for the humor factor) and 9 times out of 10, the person in question hasn't spent very much money with my company at all.

The thing is, THAT ISN'T IMPORTANT in the slightest. I truly don't care if it is literally the first time you've ever darkened my doorway. I expect that your customer service experience will mirror that of our most loyal and high spending customers. If the quality of customer service is based on how much money you spend with the company, then it is piss poor customer service. Full stop.

The attitude that it should be tied to your expenditures only contributes to a small spender never, ever, ever becoming a big spender, because they will take their business elsewhere.

A guy spending $200 a year with me could easily become a guy spending $100k with me the next year, if he starts a project.

444 Mary Poppins Said: " too many kids have been indulged and cossetted all their lives, never being disciplined or even sternly spoken to."

This isn't the kids' fault. None of these kids ever bought themselves a participation trophy. They are exactly what their parents raised them to be. As a business owner with a shitload of employees, it's unfortunately become MY job to teach them the things their parents did not. It's a pretty thankless job, and for every one of them that eventually gets it and shapes up, there are 5 that just can't, who leave my employ hating me and even filing EEOC complaints against me for expecting them to show up for work of time. Luckily, my state's EEOC commission has wisened to the BS, and essentially tells these kids to stop their whining.
