Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way
-- Leo Nikolaevitch Tolstoi

Drink and the devil had done for the rest --
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
-- Robert Louis Stevenson

Let every man honor and love the land of his birth and the race from which he springs and keep their memory green. It is a pious and honorable duty. But let us have done with British-Americans and Irish-Americans and German-Americans, and so on, and all be Americans... If a man is going to be an American at all let him be so without any qualifying adjectives; and if he is going to be something else, let him drop the word American from his personal description.
-- Henry Cabot Lodge

The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure that it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.
-- Ernest Hemingway

I am always amused by the facile assumptions by many that nature is benign, and animals are just humans without the capacity for speech and coffee. But nature doesn't care about us...at all, and most animals immediately size us up as one of two things; a threat or a meal.

This is a fascinating website that allows one to juxtapose photographs from Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, with the current scenes.

Want to feel on top of the world where the craggy peaks meet the clouds? The 2-billion-year-old Mount Roraima is where you should be head. Made famous for inspiring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, 'The Lost World', and more recently Disney's Pixar film, Up, the mountain rises more than 9200 feet above the ground making it the tallest peak of the country. Roraima, a massive tepui (table-top mountain), lies on the Guyana Shield and its sandstone cliffs ride straight up from the lush rainforests all around. At the peak, the vegetation is scanty, yet the vast majority of species of fauna exist only on tepuis like Roraima. This magical landscape features surreal rock formations, the quartz crystals of Crystals Valley, and endemic orchids, carnivorous plants, and the intriguing Roraima bush toad. Mount Roraima is definitely a must-see destination in Guyana.

99 I buy cat treats in a large plastic jar, and the cats finished one last night.

I had the empty plastic jar on the counter because I was trying to figure out if I wanted it or not, and today I heard a scrabbling and a thump from the kitchen where the big tom had stuck his head in it to lick out the crumbs and gotten his head stuck in it and fell off the counter trying to back out of it.

Of course he panicked and I had to pin the jar so he could wiggle his head out. Funniest thing in a long time.

My goal is to live another 32 years (to 90) and then take a rocket into space and be cast adrift to just slowly drift off to my final sleep while staring at the MW in all its glory.

Though G D in His infinite wisdom will surely deny me this very selfish wish and instead will have me pass surrounded by my 3 Kids and numerous Grandkids (thank Him).

Will do. I thought it was a project by a father & son. I emailed the tournament organizers after to let them know how impossibly perfect the weekend had ended, with an NHL hall of famer hanging out with us and buying us beer.

https://tinyurl.com/y4vupe8f

I need to take some time to work through this info and decide what I should zero my 16-inch barrel AR's to.

If I want to use the same criterion the US Army (and all armies) use. The military establishes a rifle/ammo zeroing range to provide torso hits on a standing person at ranges both shorter and longer than the zero range. With the soldier aiming center mass. This (theoretically) enables hits in a continuous distance "band" without the soldier needing to adjust elevation. Which he may screw-up.

The majesty of the Creation speaks to the majesty of the Creator. That we can't understand the vastness of it is the message, I think.

359 Trader Joe's just started limited availability of a house-label aged rum, 8 years. Managers knew only that it was from a Barbados distillery. Probably Mt. Gay, considering capacity to make contract labels, and Foursquare I don't think does this kind of stuff. Was a dark amber color, $20. Just an interesting indicator that finer rum is nibbling at the edges of shelf space, now dominated by bourbon, which has expanded dramatically in the new golden era thereof.

Back in the day, guys like that used to "resist arrest" a lot, then "hit their head" a few times getting into the patrol car, then "fall down the stairs" a few times at the station.

I'm not defending that, mind you. But that's what used to happen.

The criminals don't really understand what's in store for them if the current legal system breaks down. It won't mean they get to commit crimes with impunity. It will mean vigilante justice, possibly followed by a new legal system akin to the pre-Victorian British "Bloody Code", which had over 200 capital offenses.

454 Remember all the law and order police shows where dedicated detectives track down criminals and bring them to justice. HaHahahaha.
Reality is that robbery, murder and mayhem are totally out of control and neither the police or courts have the ability to even make a dent in what is going on. Murder rates skyrocketing, flash mobs cleaning out stores, human trafficing.....and what is our government doing? Putting people in jail for protesting at school board meetings or failing to wear a mask .
But the FBI can track down 650 people who walked into the Capitol for trespassing.

533 Bunch of commies around here! j/k

Thanksgiving makes me think of Mammaw and Pappaw's for the holidays. Mammaw making about 12 different dishes and loading them into the 'warming' wall oven. This house had three ovens and they all worked. It came with an over under real oven and a smaller warming oven below (1950's were a weird time.) Mammaw somewhere along the line decided that the wall oven did not have enough space, so she had pappaw knock out some counters and go with an additional, under the counter full size oven.

Turkey that was amazing (to everyone but Mammaw's sister.)
Scalloped Potatoes made with cheez whiz that were amazing.
Bread stuffing- and oyster dressing Mom made by Grandpa's recipe.
Green Beans that did not taste like green beens. Bacon and spices.
Fried Sweet Corn (drooling.)

And Pies. Pies as far as the eye could see.

You need to try turkey thats done right. My aunt had the gift. Actually all the aunts would be in her kitchen doing the cooking. It was never the same once she got old and stopped doing thanksgiving. Well all the aunts got old, so her kitchen wasn't buzzing with a billion years of collective turkey experience anymore. But yeah, not done right its just dry tasteless crap.

536 sharon, your comment about crime was sooo good, I agree 100%. I'm feeding eight people which is a small group for Thanksgiving here. I have to do a lot of prep, it is way too overwhelming to cook everything on Thanksgiving day, especially with a wonky oven. I did discover a corn cookie mix at Trader Joes, these cookies are different and quite addictive. I am also making pecan pies and the dough for apple crostata, my kitchen smells great.

633 Berserker, I love ham, but that sounds a bit excessive.

One reason I want to visit Spain is the ham, all 7,568 varieties of dried/cured/whatever'd. There's a ham museum, even.

Still fondly remember the cured Italian ham (and French pinot) at a bar in Kyoto, a typical tiny little place on a side street. They'd just carve a tiny thin sliver off the top.

Posted by: rhomboid at November 24, 2021 01:01 AM (OTzUX)

My MIL is italian, my father in law....is not. A lot of east european in that line. My MIL cooks a lot to appease his side of the family. That side loves...fucking...ham. I have been calling it com-bloc cooking since I met the wife. cabbage, kielbasi, ham, weird breads, etc. Shit I don't eat. The conversation goes like this-
her-We're going to my mother's for so and so's birthday
me- Oh, will she be cooking com-bloc?
you have no idea how many times I hit a fast food joint on the way to her mom's for diner.

712 There are probably still pallets of USDA inspected canned ham and pork in some warehouse in the former Soviet Union.

It's actually pretty tough to get good data or info on the amount of stuff shipped over there during WWII, but it was absolutely off the charts in terms of machine goods, clothing, textiles, chemicals, trucks and food, radios, and supplies of anything and everything imaginable, right down to needles and thread. Too bad they sent us communists in return.

It's "interesting" to me that the former Soviet Union doesn't allow or having any of the mind fvckery that they exported over here. I guess they ought to know better.

This is basically what a hypersonic vehicle is, and is the type the CHicoms are playing with:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boost-glide

Ballistic missiles follow a basic parabolic "ballistic" trajectory. Well, a suborbital path. Hypersonic vehicles modify that by using atmospheric lift at high speed to give a modified trajectory.

You can come in the target a low angle, like a screaming meemie, that renders all the assumptions about ballistic missle paths invalid. Chicoms could get a nuke in the US coming on one of those low paths in from the south, not over the north pole, as all ballistic missile paths must follow.

Think about a scenario where a nuke is used at Three Gorges.

Once nukes come on the field, proportionality gets thrown out (although one can always say that proportionality in war is insane.) The thing with nukes is that you can almost always come up with a more horrifying use. Maybe that's just weapons in general, I dunno.

Unless of course, Chicom spies and traitors haven't managed to put some sort of kill switch in all that response mechanism.

I have the uneasy feeling that our elite idiots in Washington will be sitting around, worried about trannys or other woke shit, and the Chicoms hit the go button and launch some sneak attack that catches them all of guard.

I was more thinking whether nuking the dam would also cause a flood of water laced with fallout downstream.

My point being, when you are gaming out nukes, there is always a worse use that you can come up with that would be truly devastating- by their very nature. They are not precise in any way.

This is why Reagan's plan of missile defense was always the only sane answer.

Nuke, even if only a Davy Crockett sized warhead.

Hypersonic sounds bitchin', till you realize how many dozens of yards of hardened concrete that you're going to have to penetrate/shatter/weaken/fatally fracture.

As engine builders are wont to say, there's no substitute for cubic megatons.

The way I have always understood the MOAB style weapons is that they are fuel air, right? Which means they need a slow delivery, right? Could a cruise/ICBM even carry that kind of payload and deliver it effectively?

I think the easiest, most reliable way to take out Three Gorges is an ICMB with some megatonnage. It's the best way to be sure. May not be the only way, but the most reliable.

Amen to that. Currently "sleeping" on the floor of our living room while gSon and gDaughter are sleeping on the cot and the couch. Coof has turned sleepovers at gMa and gPa's into a big deal. It is heartbreakingly gratifying to have been placed in such a position. Yesterday we toasted marshmallows outside on a campfire set in our weber kettle and prior to that took them to visit Mrs. K's recently widowed mother. I taught the gSon the game "fingers" while there, which he quickly picked up and enjoyed immensely. Also while visiting, I called my sister to discuss where our own mother's failing health and abilities are headed and how we four kids will continue to work to keep her in her current duplex in accordance with her xpressed desire to expire there rather than "down the hill" in the "continual care" facility. It is crushing to have to tell a loved one that "these things you no longer can do" when that person is the very one who long ago taught you yourself how to do them. Truly, in the midst of life we are in death.
