And by the way, either the NYC legal team is rushing to try to figure out how to mitigate the harm by this surprise announcement, or else they cleared it ahead of time and need to be fired for incompetence.
The statements of the head of an organization (and in government, that includes mayor, governor, or president) are implied to be the rationale behind policy. That was the case for some of the court decisions against Trump. I don't see how NYC doesn't pay damages should any cops actually go and warn people about their unfavored speech. I live in Manhattan. This is already the policy in NYC and has been since the beginning of the CV19 scam. It all depends on who is doing the thought-crimes, of course. The NYPD won't dare mess with antifa rioters literally shitting on them. But they will gleefully hassle law-abiding citizens for trivial bullshit. I've been hassled twice by cops for not wearing masks in public. Both times I told the cops to fuck off. They did nothing. No way they would have hassled me over masks if I wasn't a clean-cut white guy. They expected me to submit and comply and had no answer when I refused. As a conservative, I have supported law enforcement all my life. But I have re-thought this support over the last year. Law enforcement is a shadow of its former self. It's just as incompetent and corrupt and lazy as every other gov't agency. It's time we recognized and accepted that.

Yes, this is religious. Its driven by a combination of religious zealotry and the uncomfortable knowledge that they are in the great minority in America, so they are trying to force everyone to comply by the power of the gun.
Speech laws are not about what people go along with voluntarily or a culture does on its own. You don't need laws if people are as a general rule doing it already. You only need speech laws like this when people are not going along with your radical idea. When you're in the minority and people find your ideas distasteful or crazy. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 18, 2021 01:49 PM (KZzsI) 81
Warnings are given when you are breaking the law, usually marginally. You are going over the speed limit 8-9mph and the cop just wants to give you a warning. They can't give you a warning for doing nothing illegal.

And the thing is, rank-and-file NYPD cops will do it.
Listen to what policemen everywhere say whenever they take a suspect down who has threatened them in any way: "I'm going to do what I have to, to go home safe to my family tonight." EVERYONE wants to go home safe to their families. And under typical circumstances, I want them to as well, cops included. But being a policeman means you sometimes have to choose to put the good of the community to serve above your own safety and comfort; and cops who talk that way have either forgotten that or are just in it for the paycheck. So yes, I fully believe they'll take whatever marching orders they get, the service of the community be damned. I just hope they don't expect a "Back the Blue" chant from me. >>>Wasn't stop and frisk cops going to check out people who were not breaking the law, but felt like they were sketchy by the police? So they went and checked out the person just in case they might become criminal?
No. The theory is this: Police have a right to ask questions of anyone they like. Period. Now, you also have a right to not ANSWER those questions. But police do not need reasonable suspicion to merely question you. But then police said "It's dangerous to ask people questions, because they might pull out a gun or knife if we ask a question that alarms them." So in Terry v. Ohio, the Supreme Court blessed the practice of a "Terry frisk," which is, supposedly, just a pat-down for the officer's safety, to find hidden weapons. All without any reasonable cause for suspicion. Cops can ask questions, and cops should be safe; therefore, cops can frisk a citizen who is not even reasonably suspected of anything. Honestly this sounds like one of those dumb ideas that he got in his head that cannot actually be implemented or even codified, but sounded good at the time. I mean, I wouldn't be shocked these days if the mayor told cops to stop enforcing the actual laws and go harass people for saying things he didn't like but I don't think they will really.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 18, 2021 02:04 PM (KZzsI) Yeah, it's a shitty precedent. To be fair, the facts in front of the court for the case Terry v. Ohio kind of made sense. Basically, a cop saw a shady guy pacing around seemingly staking out a store. Nothing illegal, but shady. The cop went up to him and asked some questions, and then patted him down and found a gun in his coat pocket or whatever. The defendant was trying to get evidence of the gun suppressed since, well, the cop had no basis for patting him down, and it was an illegal search. The court said "welllll, the cop did it for his own safety, and it turns out that his hunch of this guy being an armed criminal was right, so in this particular instance, we'll allow it." and that kind of expanded to what we have now. After Biden lied about his prowess with Putin in a sickly sweet interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, Putin pulled his ambassador out of Washington. It's a pretty big move from Putin out of the blocks. Usually, if you fear a nation and its leader, you don't start by pulling your ambassador. This is Putin's telling the Biden regime: "We don't need you, and we don't fear you."
It's quite a stark difference from the Trump administration, which sanctioned Russia while engaging in diplomacy. The media chastised Trump for attempting to avoid a pointless conflict with Russia. That's the same press that is now fawning over Joe Biden's kowtowing to the Chinese Communist Party. Posted by: SMOD at March 18, 2021 02:11 PM (3aI0K) 243

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at March 18, 2021 01:43 PM When they get a mask complaint, cops in our little burg are ordered to go to businesses to tell them to put masks on. They do so in a desultory, reluctant way, because they think it's bullshit, too. But the Karens are out in battalion strength, ratting out businesses anonymously, because the PTB have allowed that. The cops say that they're getting 600-700 rat calls per day (in this town of 100,000), and they're pissed about it, and trying to stop it. My guess: we're talking about two dozen Karens putting in overtime. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at March 18, 2021 02:11 PM (YqDXo) 244

The default position for humanity is brutal, might-driven exertion of power wherever it can be. It's just odd to live in a world where on an individual basis, all sorts of mentally unwell people are running around screaming that someone/anyone is offending them with words, all while condoning the absolute dictatorial moves of their political leaders. They go around to establishments and "police" them according to whatever arbitrary ruling the Assembly made up that day concerning masks, social distancing, etc. Then the issue fines.
These are not laws, were not passed as such, and have no force. So far, most have defied them, but the fines add up, naturally. This is what the 2nd amendment is all about, folks. The vote differential was less than 400,000 votes. You get every GOP voter to vote for the GOP candidate in 2017, and the differential drops to just over 200,000.
Are you telling me that there aren't 200,000 voters in NYC who aren't open to the idea that DeBlasio needs to be replaced by someone else? Put another way, out of 3.76 million registered Democrats, a max of 760,000 voted for DeBalsio. It wouldn't be easy, but it's certainly possible. Yeah. According to the cops, they were only stopping people they suspected of committing crimes. Of course, the other side of that story is that people said the cops were stopping and harassing every young minority they saw. Which ... is kind of believable.
Oh, it's totally believable. They wouldn't have needed or used the name stop-and-frisk if that's not what they were doing. Because applying Terry as written is just standard policing. It's a mixed bag. Standard policing is rife with opportunity for abuse, so abuse happens. But I don't think there's a better way, unless you're willing to accept that cops more or less only show up after a crime has been committed and abandon proactive crime-reduction efforts. And you know who's going to bear the brunt of the approach? Not lily white folks in gated communities. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at March 18, 2021 02:25 PM (H5knJ) 335

I saw this morning that a Canadian father Robert Hoogland was arrested and held in contempt of court for calling his daughter a she/her while she's transitioning. Apparently there's a site called SOGI 123 that talks kids into believing they're trapped in the wrong body, and that's getting play at the schools. They'd been grooming this poor guys daughter for a while. He's trying to stop the irreversible damage she'll suffer from hormone therapy, but the mother and "doctor" are pushing ahead with the court's favor.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at March 18, 2021 02:25 PM (H5knJ) Right. Which is why this whole "defund the police" thing is a bit funny to me. In the '90s, the argument was the police are 911-driven and only show up after the fact, and it was racist that cops weren't hanging out in black neighborhoods focusing on quality of life issues. So the cops invented "community policing" which in turn led to a huge uptick of police presence in black neighborhoods, so they witnessed more crimes, and arrested more people. And now the cops are being called racist for doing what they were TOLD TO DO by white liberals and black leaders and everyone else. You can't have it both ways -- if you want cops "in your community" to be proactive about crimes, you can't complain when they do exactly that. If you don't want cops there, then let's go back to the 911-driven system. Posted by: Harry Paratestes at March 18, 2021 02:28 PM (UPoLF) 360

I agree with the Left. Defund the police.
If they have time to visit non criminal meanies, they don't need to be funded. I propose a 50% reduction in budgets so that the ghettos can be free of the tyranny of the po po. Remember that the left always, always hijacks both sides of the debate so that they game out their preferred response. If the left defunds the police, then they get their puppet gangs, criminals and drug lords running the city. If the left keeps the police, then they infiltrate it and turn it into a fascistic front for their ideological fantasies. The purpose of the left is to constantly create "heads, I win, tails you lose" propositions. If what they are opposing makes sense, they are lying straight through their teeth. Me? I'm just enjoying living in a small town in Texas full of well armed rednecks (neighbor has a FFL). And where everybody knows the local police, the sheriff and deputies and most of the state troopers (and game wardens) assigned to this area. Knows them by name, knows where they live, knows their parents (and grandparents). And when the cops knock on your door it's probably to tell you your cattle got loose, but they're at the auction barn. Call Jim, he'll let you in to pick them up and I already fixed the fence. Sadly we have internal refugees fleeing Austin and driving up housing costs. I mean seriously, we have 2 houses in town listed for over $500,000!

No. The theory is this:
Police have a right to ask questions of anyone they like. Posted by: ace at March 18, 2021 01:59 PM (5+1A/) Incorrect: Terry v. Ohio involved a case in which the officer could articulate a reasonable suspicion of criminal behavior. (I seem to recall that Terry was casing a liquor store for robbery). If the officer can not articulate a reasonable suspicion, a frisk in not lawful. Just think about this. What if just a part of the Q thing was true? But instead of the media takeover and public arrests and big drama, to avoid a civil war (I see conservative patriots commenting on sites that STILL think McCain was a great man..people think like molasses) the biggies were told "play your parts in this movie to make people hate the left, and you can live out your last years in your mansion, otherwise you will be executed or go to Gitmo". Which is why you see all this awful evil comic book talk out of these people which is not how they have done things. The lower level people most likely don't even know of it. I don't know this for sure but it makes some sort of sense.

#430 So when it blows up lumber gets reasonable again?
Not sure about that. When demand is satisfied then prices should drop. Too many lazy people to keep the game going. Plus interest rates will rise and suppress use. Prices will drop. This is all being driven by hot money. It will burn out like Kung Flu will. Posted by: torabora at March 18, 2021 05:18 PM (Y274z) 499

176:
I don't know about 'Suchs', but Suk is a Korean and Czech last name. Josef Suk was a composer and violinist, pupil and son-in-law of Dvorak, and Lee Bum Suk was a foreign minister of South Korea. I think it was the much-missed journal Encounter that had a story about the Korean Suk touring the U.K. On the last day he personally thanked his host for pronouncing his name correctly (just like it's spelled) instead of pretending it was 'Boom Sook' out of embarrassment. The final cherry on top of the story was in the last line: his host's name was Lord Cockfield. Anyway, Phuc is a common Vietnamese name, so a Suk-Phuc wedding announcement is statistically plausible. Remember the Vietnamese-Australian a few years ago who couldn't get an account on Facebook (I think it was) because they require a real name and couldn't believe that 'Phuc Dat Bich' was a real name? He even put his driver's license on the web to prove it was his name. As I recall, the final consonants in all three names are silent, so it's pronounced 'Foo Dah Bick', not 'F*ck Dat' Bitch'. So disappointing. Posted by: Dr. Weevil at March 18, 2021 05:39 PM (jK0SA) 501

Wonderful. End result: cop knocks on door. Resident opens door and sees cop. "Do you have a warrant?"
Cop, "No." Door slams shut. Cop shouts: "There's a missing child." Resident knows cops can lie without penalty and almost always get away with perjury. Knock, knock, knock...knock, knock,...knock. Cop leaves. Later in the day, the cop testifies in court. The jury just looks at him. Cop leaves the witness chair. Posted by: FlimFlamed at March 18, 2021 08:28 PM (ZTDnL) 504
