The statements of the head of an organization (and in government, that includes mayor, governor, or president) are implied to be the rationale behind policy. That was the case for some of the court decisions against Trump. I don't see how NYC doesn't pay damages should any cops actually go and warn people about their unfavored speech. (Of course, you'd probably need a special task force doing this, because I don't see the random beat cop knocking on doors to tell people to correct their speech.)

EVERYONE wants to go home safe to their families. And under typical circumstances, I want them to as well, cops included. But being a policeman means you sometimes have to choose to put the good of the community to serve above your own safety and comfort; and cops who talk that way have either forgotten that or are just in it for the paycheck.
So yes, I fully believe they'll take whatever marching orders they get, the service of the community be damned. I just hope they don't expect a "Back the Blue" chant from me.

Well, that's a different argument. My only point was the NYPD had to respond to that blatant and open law breaking, and they did so in a pretty subdued way.
As for the lockdowns and such, yeah, I agree, they're stupid. But NYPD's job is to enforce the laws, even if the individual officers disagree with them. And they're supposed to enforce them equally on everyone. So if they arrest a bunch of college kids for throwing a big apartment party, they definitely can't let thousands of people gather in the streets with no masks or social distancing (unless they're BLM, because reasons)

That's one way of characterizing it. They were doing Terry stops (see: Terry v. Ohio) on people who they thought were possibly armed. At least on paper. I don't know how it worked out in practice. Some say the cops just patted down every minority they saw, others say the cops were focused on known drug dealers and criminals and were trying to create an environment where gang members and drug dealers realized they couldn't walk around armed with illegal guns all the time, and had to leave their guns at home.

No. The theory is this:
Police have a right to ask questions of anyone they like. Period. Now, you also have a right to not ANSWER those questions. But police do not need reasonable suspicion to merely question you.
But then police said "It's dangerous to ask people questions, because they might pull out a gun or knife if we ask a question that alarms them."
So in Terry v. Ohio, the Supreme Court blessed the practice of a "Terry frisk," which is, supposedly, just a pat-down for the officer's safety, to find hidden weapons.
All without any reasonable cause for suspicion. Cops can ask questions, and cops should be safe; therefore, cops can frisk a citizen who is not even reasonably suspected of anything.

The Hassidics were ignoring the lockdown rules from day one, hipsters in Williamsburg and other places were tweeting out pictures of huge gatherings of Hassidics, without masks, there were multiple large covid outbreaks linked to those communities in NYC and in upstate, the city tried talking to them multiple times, and then some pictures of thousands of hassidics at a funeral went viral, and NYPD was asked to step in.

I used to support SnF, but after I had to go through an inebriated driver checkpoint, I developed new sympathy for those who object. It's a pity that the people who live in those neighborhoods will pay the price, but I just can't see how SnF is constitutional.

Yeah, it's a shitty precedent. To be fair, the facts in front of the court for the case Terry v. Ohio kind of made sense. Basically, a cop saw a shady guy pacing around seemingly staking out a store. Nothing illegal, but shady. The cop went up to him and asked some questions, and then patted him down and found a gun in his coat pocket or whatever. The defendant was trying to get evidence of the gun suppressed since, well, the cop had no basis for patting him down, and it was an illegal search.
The court said "welllll, the cop did it for his own safety, and it turns out that his hunch of this guy being an armed criminal was right, so in this particular instance, we'll allow it." and that kind of expanded to what we have now.

Yeah, that's how it works when you live in a society. Government passes laws, and if you don't follow them, you usually end up in jail, even if you don't like the particular law in question.
For example, I don't enjoy paying taxes. And I think I'm taxed too much. But if I decide to not pay taxes, I know I will eventually end up in jail. Is that fair? Not really, but it's the only way a society can function.

Of course, the other side of that story is that people said the cops were stopping and harassing every young minority they saw. Which ... is kind of believable. And of course, it was concentrated in "bad neighborhoods." I don't know, I'm very uncomfortable with the whole ideal of terry searches, and definitely uncomfortable with the "stop and frisk" policy. The vote differential was less than 400,000 votes. You get every GOP voter to vote for the GOP candidate in 2017, and the differential drops to just over 200,000.

Oh, it's totally believable. They wouldn't have needed or used the name stop-and-frisk if that's not what they were doing. Because applying Terry as written is just standard policing. It's a mixed bag. Standard policing is rife with opportunity for abuse, so abuse happens. But I don't think there's a better way, unless you're willing to accept that cops more or less only show up after a crime has been committed and abandon proactive crime-reduction efforts. And you know who's going to bear the brunt of the approach? Not lily white folks in gated communities.

I moved during the pandemic, but I would say most people live there because it's usually a very fun place to live. All kinds of bars, restaurants, etc., they can serve alcohol until 4 am, you can walk / uber / take a cab or subway everywhere and don't need to worry about driving or parking or owning a car. And when you're in your 20's and 30's, it's kind of like a huge college campus filled with people your age.
Plus the pay and job opportunities are really good.
There are, obviously, a lot of downsides as well.

Right. Which is why this whole "defund the police" thing is a bit funny to me. In the '90s, the argument was the police are 911-driven and only show up after the fact, and it was racist that cops weren't hanging out in black neighborhoods focusing on quality of life issues. So the cops invented "community policing" which in turn led to a huge uptick of police presence in black neighborhoods, so they witnessed more crimes, and arrested more people. And now the cops are being called racist for doing what they were TOLD TO DO by white liberals and black leaders and everyone else.
You can't have it both ways -- if you want cops "in your community" to be proactive about crimes, you can't complain when they do exactly that. If you don't want cops there, then let's go back to the 911-driven system.

The disconnect from what is really happening in the world and the various Stock exchanges couldn't be more stark.
The thing is, there is little alternative for people to put a lot of money.
Buy a new house? Most housing markets now are on fire, if you can believe what I have as anecdotal evidence from a couple of realtors that I know.
Travel? That's dead.
Home improvements? Lumber is sky high, and that's part of the reason.
And the stock market. A lot of institutional investors are pouring money in; it frankly defies fundamentals, but they you go. Someday it's all going go blow up, because it is a big speculative bubble.

Here's another insider tidbit. The banks are lobbying Congress to extend the forbearance measures passed as part of COVID Relief. They are no longer necessary but it has helped keep some of the trading businesses making money. The banks don't want that relief to end because they state it will increase market volatility, this return to normal. They are right, it will show the real effects of the economy and correctly reflect them in the equities market.

I kind of get that. I've lived in rural areas and in several cities. I prefer rural areas most of the time, but there is something to be said for the fun of living in a city. Like right now, I could walk for 5 minutes in any direction and walk past multiple restaurants, bars, gyms, stores, etc. Which is convenient. Plus makes bar hopping really easy and fun.

Police have a right to ask questions of anyone they like. Period. Now, you also have a right to not ANSWER those questions. But police do not need reasonable suspicion to merely question you.
But then police said "It's dangerous to ask people questions, because they might pull out a gun or knife if we ask a question that alarms them."
So in Terry v. Ohio, the Supreme Court blessed the practice of a "Terry frisk," which is, supposedly, just a pat-down for the officer's safety, to find hidden weapons.
All without any reasonable cause for suspicion. Cops can ask questions, and cops should be safe; therefore, cops can frisk a citizen who is not even reasonably suspected of anything.

Incorrect: Terry v. Ohio involved a case in which the officer could articulate a reasonable suspicion of criminal behavior. (I seem to recall that Terry was casing a liquor store for robbery). If the officer can not articulate a reasonable suspicion, a frisk in not lawful.

I don't know about 'Suchs', but Suk is a Korean and Czech last name. Josef Suk was a composer and violinist, pupil and son-in-law of Dvorak, and Lee Bum Suk was a foreign minister of South Korea. I think it was the much-missed journal Encounter that had a story about the Korean Suk touring the U.K. On the last day he personally thanked his host for pronouncing his name correctly (just like it's spelled) instead of pretending it was 'Boom Sook' out of embarrassment. The final cherry on top of the story was in the last line: his host's name was Lord Cockfield.
Anyway, Phuc is a common Vietnamese name, so a Suk-Phuc wedding announcement is statistically plausible. Remember the Vietnamese-Australian a few years ago who couldn't get an account on Facebook (I think it was) because they require a real name and couldn't believe that 'Phuc Dat Bich' was a real name? He even put his driver's license on the web to prove it was his name. As I recall, the final consonants in all three names are silent, so it's pronounced 'Foo Dah Bick', not 'F*ck Dat' Bitch'. So disappointing.
