Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Re-Education Camp Cafe: Dumb Creatures of Low Animal Intelligence EditionWe have the absolute worst-educated elites. Andrew Mitchell tries to "correct" Ted Cruz's mention of Shakespeare's "sound and fury."Andrea Mitchell Jerry DunleavyOh you stupid decrepit vinegary buzzard. William Faulkner did indeed publish a novel called The Sound and the Fury -- a novel which takes its name from... MacBeth. By the way, the "sound and fury" speech is one of the, what?, five most famous Shakespearean quotes? How "elite" can this "Elite" possibly be if she doesn't recognize one of the top five Shakespearean quotes? Oh, and by the way, Andrea: Don't confuse Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury with Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory. I know they look the same to a lazy diminished-executive-function scroll-and-click Twitter Junkie meltbrain, but they're different. Update: It gets worse. 51 It's even more hilarious when you consider that Andrea Mitchell got a BA in English literature in 1967. Back then every high school and college English lit class was still making damn sure everybody got an education in Shakespeare and yet somehow they couldn't overcome the wind drag of Andrea's brain. Here's some cute stuff: Lost and emaciated pit bull seeks help from a very nice hooman. This one starts a little tough, but gets better. A cute little Golden Retriever was locked in a cage his whole life. He cannot really walk. But nice hoomans get him running again. Another one that starts tough but gets better: Senior dog, abused and abandoned, is rescued and nursed back to health. This guy gets accepted into a gorilla family. By request: Sea otter mom and pup. Little flashback here to the saga of Leland and the new television. Remember, this is all staged. This family films semi-scripted scenarios, often featuring a misbehaving Leland. Miley and I may get internet tomorrow. Charter sent another truck out to connect and install the hardware (pedestal) for the overhead and underground run to the new house. However, it's going to set in to raining for about a week. Today was a very nice day, things had dried out enough for the guy to get his truck in the field. But the final tie in will be at the road, so don't have to worry about rain. Charter, God bless them, they take their time, and do it piecemeal. The "Oxfordian Theory" as it's known posits the true author was the 17th Earl of Oxford, Edward DeVere. It is the most popular alternate authorship. This has been hotly debated, and I think current woke culture considers it verbotten. Me I don't know enough to really have an opinion of my own, but the Oxfordians make some really good points. Shakespeare was just about the greatest, at least in English, and his turns of phrases persist to this day more than any other. The author was obviously well educated in many subjects including law and history, and knew the inside goings-on of the court. The Stratford man had none of those. My favorite example is Robin Hood. They all love them some Robin Hood, because he stole from the rich and gave to the poor! Is that really what happened? or maybe did he steal back from the tax collectors and return stuff to those over taxed by Prince John? ----- Perfect example. And, as a general rule, I don't hold it against people when they say something ignorant. First of all, we all do it. Nobody's an expert on everything. It's easy to fall into some false trope if you don't know better. Secondly, for a huge number of people, they know very little about very little, because our education system is a tragic joke from start to finish. To a large extent, our society has failed to educate children or young adults, and I can't say as I blame people for not knowing much. But, see, most people don't walk around acting like they're the fonts of human wisdom. Journalists almost universally do, and they fall in the bottom tranche of functional and cultural literacy in the writing profession. Posted by: Azathoth at February 10, 2021 08:10 PM (2sozY) ------ Dude, it was the 90s for me, and I didn't even go to good schools. We did some of those in junior high, and the rest in HS. I graduated from a chronically poor district, and we had done Chaucer and Donne, all that great English lit. They even shoehorned in some philosophy classics and Omar Khayyam poems and shit. That was twenty freaking years ago. Now that I'm seeing elementary and junior high education up close today, these kids will be lucky if they're on track for my generation's HS lit by the age of forty. Marlowe died because of the tavern bill for food and drink, which was served as a total called a "score". Everyone was supposed to pay their fair share. In this case their was an argument over their scores, and alcohol might have been involved. The knives came out and Marlowe was wrestled to the floor and stabbed. In the early 19th century the system of "separate checks" was created, and thus prevented a lot of trouble in this vein. But some people are of the opinion that the "brawl self-defense" verdict was the cover for something else.

My guess is that a young Greenspan made a mistake common in young nerds and military recruits: assuming that one is required to marry the first woman who allows you to have sex with her.
This is rarely a good idea. It's never a good idea if the woman in question is a stripper, bar girl, or journalist. About Shakespeare.., in Eric Flint's 1632 series (the one where a modern West Virginia coal mining town gets sent back to 1600s Europe), one of the local doctors bursts into laughter on seeing an edition of Shakespeare's plays, claiming that everyone knows the Earl wrote them. One thing most writers can't really aspire to is what Shakespeare did to the language. He detonated the contemporary usage. The change from the old Germanic structures had been slowly happening for a hundred or so years, but his plays revolutionized and popularized modern English to a point where the whole English literary world changed for good. I got kicked up from the remedial classes my junior high had put me into, into an independent-study English class as a HS freshman, and it was basically 'pick what book you want to read this week and tell me about it Friday'. God, it was magnificent. That put me in the AP History/English class combo taught by a tag-team of guys I will remember for life (basically they alternated two-hour sessions day to day). The history guy especially, he'd walk around and kick the desks - I mean, pop them an inch off the ground - of students he didn't think were paying enough attention. One guy who sat in the front row attracted his attention at least a day a week and seemed to live for it. Since we were talking Shakespeare, i must endorse Fools and Mortals by Bernard Cornwell, the author of the Sharpe series and much more. It's a fun period piece wherein the POV protagonist, Will Shakespeare's little-known brother Richard, decides he wants a man's part in the new play his brother has been commissioned to write for the wedding of Elizabeth Carey, the granddaughter of Lord Hunsdon, the Queen's Lord Chamberlain. (And Will's biggest patron, so it's a Big Deal.) When the play is stolen, Richard is suspected, due to an argument with his brother and other factors, and he has to go find it. Lots of excitement and adventure, lots of drama on and off the stage, and Cornwell shows off a lot of work in researching the English theater scene of the 1590s. It's definitely worth the read!

My 12th grade history teacher was a hell of a teacher. He once said in class, apropos of nothing we were studying, "I was reading about the Battle of Naseby last night. When was the Battle of Naseby?" I brightly offered, "1643?" He replied, "1645. Hadrian, you're hopeless." We got along great.

My grandad was a high school principal. When I was young, it wasn't unusual to meet some of his students. One said he was in class one day when Granddaddy came in and said, "If any of you boys are interested in a swimming class, meet me at my car at two tomorrow."
He and several other boys met him the next day. He drove them to a spring creek (very cold) nearby. They stripped naked and jumped in, while Granddaddy stood on the bank and recited poetry--very loudly. He said they went every week until cold weather, and Granddaddy never ran out of material to recite. Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis, Domestic Terrorist at February 10, 2021 09:32 PM (sWM8x) 617

Mitchell very likely did not read Faulkner, nor is the problem that she studied too much. My guess is she googled the phrase hoping to find that it could be easily connected to racism or violence or both, saw that it was the title of a Faulkner book, and went from there.

#663 - I disagree. I immediately recognized the problem because I am aware that Faulkner wrote a book called "The Sound and the Fury". I've never read it and I don't even know what it's about, but if you asked me "who wrote TS(and)TF?" I could tell you "William Faulkner". Mitchell knew the same thing. She just unwittingly combined a brain fart with a powerful dose of "Oh, I got that moutherfucker now!". Bad combination. Some people never recover.

The "sound and fury" quote is much better known as a Shakespeare quote than it is as a Faulkner Title. Nearly everyone has been exposed to Macbeth. Many of us have never read Faulkner, and many more wish they hadn't.

Most of us aren't making light of Larry Flynt's death because of the pornography.
We're making light of his death because he was a horrible f****** human being. Posted by: Azathoth His daughter tried opposing him and Uncle Jimmy (Larry's walking brother who did a lot of Larry's business). One afternoon, the Gary Burbank on WLW in Cincy got Uncle Jimmy and Larry's daughter on the phone together. Uncle Jimmy pretty much threatened to kill her if she kept messing with them. So, that went well. Posted by: Bozo Conservative ....Living on the prison planet at February 10, 2021 10:02 PM (tjZg/) 682

Isn't it interesting that bacteria haven't developed resistance to topical antibiotics like Neosporin even though they are used over the counter and far more widely than injected antibiotics? Its almost as though the problem has something to do with injections and hospitals.
