The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

"The Invisible Hand" (Adam Smith's term) is often used to describe the millions of individual decisions that in the aggregate guide the economy. It is nothing more than self-interest multiplied by everyone on earth.

And that self-interest is a powerful driver of change. But not just economic; I refer to social and political change. And that is why it is imperative that conservative belief be channeled into behavior. The conservative movement in America is under unprecedented attack, and think tanks and strongly worded letters are not sufficient. In fact, our deeply held belief in the voting booth as an agent of change has been upended, so we are left with fewer tools with which to effect the change necessary to return our country to some semblance of sanity and respect for our founding and traditions.

But what is that self interest? It is more appropriately termed "enlightened self-interest," because the self-interest of the individual meshes perfectly with the desired direction of the country. And that "enlightened self-interest" is nothing more than fighting the encroaching fascism of the left. That means that we must push back at every incursion into the freedoms we hold dear. A small gesture or a large one...it doesn't matter. But as the Left is so fond of saying: "We Are The Resistance!"

If you see a politician in public? Harangue him. Tell him what you think. Do not allow them to flex their fascist muscles without confrontation. Boycott the most egregious violators of the idea that corporations are not agents of government. And do it loudly. Exercise your God-given rights as often and as publicly as possible. Speak freely! Buy guns! Go to church, and proclaim your beliefs. Attend local meetings and make sure that the powers that be, no matter how small and seemingly inconsequential are aware that you are watching and that you will hold them accountable. Tell your children's teachers and school administrators that leftist indoctrination is absolutely unacceptable. Say it in public. Call them out when they glorify the rot in our society. Go to their classes and record the perversions that they want to mainstream. Do what you can. But act! For yourself. For your family.

And that self-interest, multiplied by millions of us is the most powerful tool save one. After all, fascism is at its core a bundle of sticks. We cannot break the bundle, but we can break the individual sticks; the local sticks; the thin sticks!

We are "The Invisible Hand." It is up to us to exercise its power. If we act in concert then we have the power to achieve the change we desire for ourselves and for the society around us. But the longer we wait, the more perilous resistance to the state and its corporate lackeys becomes. The small injustices that we choose to ignore rapidly will become profound intrusions into our lives, and at that point it may be too late for peaceful action, and too late for any chance of success.

Is this Pollyanna-ish? Perhaps. But as many of you know, I am a firm and unyielding believer in American Exceptionalism, and I will continue to believe that it is a powerful and hopefully irresistible force until I have irrefutable evidence that it has left us.

92 I am a firm and unyielding believer in American Exceptionalism, and I will continue to believe that it is a powerful and hopefully irresistible force until I have irrefutable evidence that it has left us.
++++++++++++++++++++++++
You know who were exceptional... The Romans of the early republic. They were hearty farmers who set aside their plowshare and picked up their shield and pilum every campaign season. They would occasionally lose a battle but never a war. They were religiously devout, good family men, and were willing to die for their country. Then Caesar came along and exposed the corruption of the patricians. They killed him, a civil war broke out, and Augustus eventually seized control of a degenerate totalitarian state.

We had a good run, but it's over...

I'm not exactly sure what to do. 173 A critical aspect of Enlightened Self Interest is not being as "greedy" as possible in all circumstances. That is combined with both moderating personal joy and sorrow over situations as well as enhancing joy or sorrow for what others are experiencing.

Those aspects combine in social reactions, rewarding or punishing excess or shortcomings by social acceptance or rejection.
Recently they have been warped by social media, and warped further in the Chinese experiment with their "social credit" system.

The "invisible hand" is indeed powerful.
It can also work both ways.
Something to keep in mind.

Queen -- 29.99 if you find a 66% off promo code. Which is easy if you Bing "my pillow promo codes". There are websites that collect them. I got mine from, of all places, a CNN site. Dozens of current promo codes but they all represent a specific deal. Look for one that gives you "66% off, sites wide".

Plus I got another 10% off by letting them text my phone. After a day of them texting me deals every hour, I tried to reply "STOP" but it won't let you send it, because My Pillow is slightly shady in that regard -- so I just put the number into Spam. So use the "text me for 10% off" feature at own risk.

So -- without discounts, a queen size is $90. But the promo codes are easy to find online, and there are always dozens.

I'm of the opinion that we entered "weak mean create bad times" sometime between 1990 and 2010 and we've now solidly entered "bad times create strong men." Best case scenario based on historical cycles, 10-20 more years of this. Worst case, 50 years.

The thing that clicked in my head is "when did we stop making movies about strong men doing hard, dangerous things because it's the right thing?" The last era of that being a common movie theme was probably the early '90s, though a few movies of that type have popped up since then like "The Patriot."

Price and quantity are the axes on which the supply and demand curves are plotted.

So when a demand and/or supply curve changes, a new equilibrium is reached at a new price and/or quantity.

Quantity is the "visible" factor, whereas price is the "inivisble" force pushing the market to the new equilibrium.

The closest answer I could find is that Sec of Army requested them, and governors agreed to provide them. However - it seems to me that Sec of Army could not request them without the President's approval, which would make you wonder why Trump approved. Bigger q is whether they did it WITHOUT Trump's approval. If so, that is seriously problematic.

281 imo we are learning that as awesome and useful as rugged individualism is -- there is a need for "community organizing", and building that into powerful national organizations. This is needed the same way a country needs national defense, where we unite to fight other organized (enemy) states.

What united us as a country was our unique Bill of (God given) Rights. But enemies figured out they could infiltrate our government by bribing or blackmailing the people that run it. The Soviets did this (Obama maybe our first red diaper baby POTUS) ... and now China has done it. (how many other nations?) ... the new "United We Stand" group/party has to be organized ... imo "We" are still the majority, but the enemy took the power, and the oligarchs won't let go (even if they have to steal elections).

How hard have you looked? Look up the Texas court filing with the Supreme Court. Lots of examples in there.

Did you watch the briefings to the state houses of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, etc. that President Trump's legal team gave? They were all streamed live, and there were links provided to them here, either by cobs or commenters. Maybe you can still find them on some YouTube channels like Right Side Broadcasting, but maybe not, since Youtube declared last week they were removing all videos that said there was election fraud. There were hundreds of witnesses, all of whom had sworn affadavits, testifying to election fraud.

Go look.

The philosophy behind prepping is similar to self defense/martial arts training. It can provide effective tools but if your preparation/training does not include any semblance of reality your investment may be totally useless. Real world violence is more often than not, by suprise, faster, and harder then you anticipate. Your response is most often reactive as opposed to active. Most training does not take into account the chemical reaction (severe adrenaline spike) and the accompanying disorientation. Prepping is the same. If actual deprivation, physical discomfort and fear have not been tested then the mental reaction to such will overwhelm most no matter how many gadgets and totes of freeze dried food they have.

Yes. SCOTUS said (in a clear break with logic) that if an EO is in place, it can't just be undone by the stroke of a pen. There has to be a process of determining that it's no longer necessary, or the costs outweigh the benefits, or something like that. It can be done, but it's not automatic, and it gives our side (looking at you, state AG's) the opportunity to intervene in court and litigate the reversal. All we need is one Alabama judge who can do what his Hawaiian counterpart did for the Dems.

448 Okay, but can you name THREE movies that are totally historical, no bullshit?

I love Gladiator and Braveheart and I know they are not very accurate.
Posted by: JoeF. at January 19, 2021 12:04 PM (HrMC1)

Midway (1976)
The Longest Day
A Bridge Too Far

I think they are pretty bang on with only minor nit picks about who said what words, in the latter film.

450 445 I'm watching the 1971 Nicholas and Alexandra on Tubi. Dunno how accurate it is, but it's beautifully lit -- you can actually see people indoors! -- and you get Tom Baker, the best-known Doctor Who, as Rasputin.

==========

It's a good movie. Because of its length, people consider it an epic. It's not. It's a family drama that takes 3 hours and just happens to tell the story of the opening of the Russian Revolution from a particular, and surprisingly small, point of view.

455 All retail is hurting. BB&B and Kohl's are not at the top of the food chain and are both struggling. Pushing 75 million consumers out of your store can't be good for business. I think either they were heavily coerced or incredibly stupid, or both.

I went to a BB&B on Sunday and found nothing in the store I thought I needed or wanted. It used to be a favorite stop on my errand runs.

We're watching it in 2 parts because of that length. It seems well-cast all the way down the line; you know Lenin and Trotsky when you see them, even before their names are mentioned. The young Stalin is in it, but he calls himself Stalin -- was he going by that as early as 1905?

According to Infogalactic, Stalin began using that name between 1910 and 1912. So the first scene in N and A he's in, set about the time of the Russo-Japanese War, is anachronistic.

It's interesting, because it does seem like there has to be a major reset--everything's corrupt, top to bottom

"How hard have you looked? Look up the Texas court filing with the Supreme Court. Lots of examples in there."

Have to step in here and say that the problem is not so much educating ourselves. Many if not most of us on here follow pretty well. We can read a court brief or the other info cited, and process it and formulate an opinion and point of view.

The real problem is convincing someone else in this dumbed down age - and someone who really doesn't want their pop culture leftist think world rattled by contrary dialogue - that what you are saying is credible.
