Holy crap. I named my daughter Vanessa after her maternal grandmother. That's as much as I thought of the history of the name, until I looked it up. It's AWFUL.
Jonathan Swift made the name up out of whole cloth in a poem he wrote. It's a contraction/anagram of "Esther Vanhomrigh," a Dutch girl much his junior, whom he seduced and betrayed and left to die alone of tuberculosis. Absolutely awful, and I never knew Swift was such a rotten sonofabitch Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 25, 2020 02:12 PM (lJuMe) Posted by: Hillary Clinton at December 25, 2020 02:13 PM (jKq7l) 7

Mike Hammer's highly efficacious eggnog recipe:
1. Sealtest off-the-shelf eggnog, 6 ozs., 180 ml if using commie measure 2. Bacardi Gold Label rum, 2 ozs, 60ml for the deprived 3. Nutmeg, as desired. Food snobs will have actual nutmegs and graters, but white trash like myself will have store-bought nutmeg dust. Gently combine Sealtest and rum, stir lightly, lick spoon. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Willowed from a previous thread. Christopher Moore is a writer who has had me bursting out in laughter in quiet public places.
Our Christmas tradition - we are listening to "The Stupidest Angel, a Hearwarming Tale of Christmas Terror" by Christopher Moore... "Christmas crept into Pine Cove like a creeping Christmas thing..." Posted by: Russkilitlover at December 25, 2020 03:39 PM (99Nt9) 176
Lunch today was salmon spread (smoked salmon, mayonnaise and capers) on naan smeared with hummus.
I've wanted to try making that for a long time but I always end up eating the salmon before I do anything else with it. Posted by: dartist at December 25, 2020 03:40 PM (+ya+t) 177

Just saw on Twitter that Andrew Kaczynski's (CNN K-File) tiny baby daughter passed away last night from cancer. Poor little thing didn't even make it to her first Christmas . A heartbreaking reminder that we should count our blessings.

I just saw Tenet. I liked it, but I will have to see it again to decide if it makes sense. Nolan should have been given a Bond movie by now, and this film confirms this despite being driven by a heavy concept.

There is a nice hunk of Roast Beast in the sous-vide, soon to be browned in a very hot oven.
Beverages first, for whistles must be wetted (or whetted). Posted by: Miklos, down in Whoville at December 25, 2020 03:44 PM (QzkSJ) 188

I am feeling pretty good today. This is the first morning in about a week that I haven't swallowed a couple of Ibuprofen tabs with my morning coffee to fight the chills and sore muscles. I think I have this bug on the run, now.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Posted by: AZ -------- Does the bug speak with a Chinese accent? The Yellow Peril? Jeeze, I had not heard you've been feeling bad. Somehow, I can't perceive of a Canadian feeling ill. Out of character, doesn't square with my Sgt. Preston vision. Glad it seems to be turning.
