First-World Problems...Part שלושים ושבע

beater2.jpg

I have a relatively old car (actually an SUV) that doesn't have many of the recent bells and whistles. Well, it has a back-up sensor which is pretty useful for parking, but that's about it. One of its few interesting features was a heating system for the wiper fluid. I thought that was pretty neat, but GM's engineers added another feature to the system called, "Wiring harness failure and fire," so the fuddy-duddies at corporate decided to disable it.

Unfortunately, while it is quite old (13 years!), I generally take care of my things, so it is in excellent condition. And as everyone knows, modern cars are pretty damned reliable. They may not be exciting or beautiful or elegant, but they are boringly predictable and last a very long time.

BUT I WANT A NEW CAR!

I am also cheap frugal, so the thought of buying a new car before the old one wears out is just silly. It's just not going to happen.

BUT I WANT A NEW CAR!

Life is awful sometimes.

14 I've had four cars in my life. The first one I sold not too long after high school, which was stupid because it was a 1970 Dodge Challenger and it would be worth something restored. The next two were used Nissan Sentras that each lasted about 12 years. I bought number 4 - one of the modern Challengers - eight years ago and it's got a ton of life still left in it.

I am at the point in life where a pickup truck would be useful (for hauling crap to the landfill, mostly), but my car is paid off and I don't want another payment. Maybe when little D turns 16 I'll give her the keys to the Challenger - it's not a RT or SRT, relax - and buy a truck.

We splurged on a 2020 Ford Explorer ST. It's probably the most well appointed vehicle I've ever owned, and is incredibly fast for a 2 ton monster. Like zero to 60 in about 6 seconds. It also has more electronic do-dads than I know what to do with, and I consider myself literate with electronics.

Fortunately you can turn the majority of that shit off.

41 When I had my 20 year old van in the shop for warranty work recently, they loaned me a new Jeep so I could do errands while I waited for the work to be done. It was, frankly, terrifying. The brakes were overly sensitive, the engine turned itself off if you were standing still with your foot on the brake (alarming the first time it happened; I wasn't warned), there was no ignition lock key, and I couldn't immediately find the door opening/locking bug (they'd stuck it in a cup holder). I was never so glad to get the van back.

50 Martini Farmer - I was listening to Eric Peters, I think, who said that Ford vehicles have some system wherein the steering wheel will resist being turned if you haven't activated a turn signal. The idea is that it keeps people from drifting into oncoming traffic. Of course, it also fights you if you need to make a quick, unsignaled lane change. I haven't driven a new Ford, so I can't speak from experience. Does your Explorer have this, and can you turn it off, if so?

75 my first world problem begins with high blood pressure, a 90% blockage, and a stent in October of 2019. 12 months later and i'm off the blood thinner and one of my bp meds. woohoo!

time to dust off the motorcycle and go for a ride.

battery has a dead cell, so i call around, not in stock anywhere except the place that has a 300% markup. eff them.

ordered from batteries plus, in store pick up. received installed, core exchanged. roll the bike out of the garage, for a warm up and a thorough pre-ride check.

holey fook! two engine mount bolts are missing! when did those disaparate?

i very clearly remember installing them when i did the clutch pack two years ago, i even remember torqueing them to 45 foot pounds. did not use lok-tite.

this was prior to my second spine surgery, so i probably didnt put more than several hundred miles on it after the clutch rebuild.

i was able to find two new replacement bolts, washers, and nuts from the online official parts dealers. cost $38 including shipping. this was two weeks ago. they shipped, but haven't arrived.

the agony. i'm healthy enough to ride again, but am down for parts. this sux.

update, some of you may remember me whinging about my damned right knee. it won't suppport my weight when instep, and i've lost a lot of motor control of my lower leg. rendering my not able to ride again. the fooking bolts came in a ups box last night.

if ammo were more readily available, i would take my frustrations out on a paper target at 200 yards.

77 I'd like to get an RV, but I'd have to get a self-contained Class A Motorcoach.

Ain't gonna pull much trailer with a 2015 Mazda 5 minivanwagon.

The pity is, the Mazda isn't suited to being towed "four-flat" behind an RV. No simple way to let the drivetrain freewheel, and not destroy the transmission. Front wheels would have to go up on a tow-dolly, behind the RV. A less elegant solution, to be sure.

Downside to owning a good sized (or any) RV? Storing the damn thing. I've got room for one beside the house, behind the front fence. HOA couldn't say a damn thing about it, because "behind the fence".

But it'd still be an eyesore, parked there like that.

I think the RV is damn near the perfect MoMeet Flyer. And for other ventures, as well.

Schlepping tons of guns n' gear up to and back from a hotel room, just is less and less fun with every trip and journey.

My Explorer has 3 different settings, or levels of computer intervention, but you can turn the wheel to change lanes in all modes without a turn signal on. There's a "tugging" in the wheel when you have it set to the most sensitive position. The sensors around the body can "see" the painted lines and it can, if you set it up, try to keep you in your lane.

It'll also apply the brakes if it detects another object in front or behind you... again, if you set it. It will park itself both parallel and normal.

86 New Years Eve a few years ago my buddy and his wife brought their keyless Lexus. She starts the car and decides to run back and change jackets. Key is in the pocket of the jacket. Parks at the end of the driveway blocking everyone in. Gets out and car locks up with no way to get back in. Cab ride to my house to get my car and a 45 minute ride each way to their house put that New Years Eve in the 4 am range. My buddy was not smiling.

I might get the Q7 or Telluride if i need a new family car or keep it and get a used Tacoma.

89 My Explorer has 3 different settings, or levels of computer intervention, but you can turn the wheel to change lanes in all modes without a turn signal on.

91 I have a 1st world problem with a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe with 137,000 miles on it.
On the freeway, fast lane doing 75mph and the tach goes crazy and then the engine light comes on. DOH.
I get into the slow lane and then make my way up a nicely placed off ramp. California stop on the top, right turn, coast down across the Pilot Gas Station's entrance and the car stops. Dead, never to go again.
Wife called Hyundai, told them car was coming. They said we can't look at it until Tuesday (it's Thursday). Wife points out existing recall for engine bearing failure and the symptoms match. Son comes and picks us up (50 miles from town and he's at the other end of town Yea number 3 son!).
While driving home we get a call from dealership. Yup, we looked at your car. Yup, recall failure. Yup replacement engine and tran has been ordered. Would you like to do all this other *stuff* that we are sure you need done to the care? (Oh, hell no) Oh... we can tell you take great care of your care, I wouldn't do anything else either.
Oh... and come by and pick up the rental car that has been authorized for the 6-8 weeks until we're done.

3rd world problem you ask: The Hyundai Tucson is smaller than the Santa Fe. Whatever am I going to do?

137 50 Martini Farmer - I was listening to Eric Peters, I think, who said that Ford vehicles have some system wherein the steering wheel will resist being turned if you haven't activated a turn signal. The idea is that it keeps people from drifting into oncoming traffic. Of course, it also fights you if you need to make a quick, unsignaled lane change. I haven't driven a new Ford, so I can't speak from experience. Does your Explorer have this, and can you turn it off, if so?
Posted by: PabloD isn't in a reconciliatory mood at December 06, 2020 02:19 PM (/LWj7)

My charger has that feature. It's part of the collision avoidance, and lane safety features. I can adjust the sensitivity of the lane keeping and the aggressiveness of the 'correction', or turn it off altogether.

I believe it's handled through the electric power steering and the LIDAR sensors built into the body. Also part of the adaptive cruise control for maintaining following distance.

Car is an absolute stealth muscle car with all the bells and whistles. Ton of fun to drive in 2mpg mode, equally fun to get 28mpg on the highway. Variable valve timing gives it some truly impressive low end torque. Scary sometimes.

Holy crap, I'd be all over that. My mother drove a 1964 T-Bird, it was silver-blue, I loved that thing. The instrument panel right out of a plane. So cool, so much chrome and steel.

I drive cars until they die pretty much. I still have my 2006 Infiniti M45 I bought used in 2008 w/160k. I need to throw a bunch of money at it now though, it needs the front end rebuilt and new rotors. That V8 is rough on the suspension.

I bought a 2016 Lexus back in April, right during the covid panic and riots. I had seen some insane deals on used cars, but they were drying up fast, so I jumped on this. Glad I did. I'd never buy a new car again unless I hit the lotto. I'd rather pay half price on something with 45k miles on it a couple of years old.

I gotta admit, it's sort of weird all the bells and whistles these new cars have - park assist, radar, etc. I can survive just fine without apple or google play, which is one of the bitches about the Lexus (I think they've finally added it).

I do wish for one thing on new cars - and that's a USB port or 2 up by the rear view mirror, and a 12V would be awesome. That way, you can actually stick a dash cam or radar detector in without having to route the wiring or have it dangling. They're already running power up there on most cars now anyway.

Of all these, the truck was simply the best vehicle I ever owned. It was bullet proof and hauled the ski boat like a champ.

The worst by far has been the Audi. Its the supercharged version and is extremely costly to repair. OEM tires alone are over $3k to replace and only last 15k. I go with standard tires at 40k.

My current car, my first Ford, is going strong at 7+ years. 34-42 mpg. Heated seats and remote start.

But Saturn is gone and Ford isn't going to make sedans, and every manufacturer is pushing the EVs, which a chipmunk can sabotage under the hood if the rain doesn't. What the heck am I supposed to do?!?!

160 I still have my second car, a cherry little '84 black Rabbit GTi, with no power steering nor A/C. In the Central Valley summers, you watch the H2O temp near the red zone at idle at every traffic light, praying that the thermostat isn't broken-- and it magically kicks in, to your great relief. Compared to today's lower-end economy models, the GTi has a painfully slow 0-60 time, and I'm constantly re-adjusting the shift linkage; however, get it on the country back roads, scrolling through 2nd to 4th gear (once said linkage is sorted), you can't have more fun in a 280,000 mile car. Plus, insurance is incredibly cheap, and it still gets 30 MPG.

I'm gonna be buried in it...one way or another.

In our area, the white crosswalk has sensors if you drive your car over it, triggering the red light camera. You could conceivably just stop on the crosswalk, not running the red light, and still get a hefty ticket.

We always stop well behind it to avoid such a scenario.

a beauty, signal red with palomino interior

cost me a little less than 10K

and I sold it 10 years later with about 24 K miles on it for $25,000

and yeah, it was a very cool car for tearing off tail in

it was still a bad investment

I like dials I can adjust by feel.

I don't even like anti-lock brakes because they interfere with my braking control on slick surfaces. I just can't bring myself to slam on brakes when sliding and let the brakes take over, but that's about all you can do if you have anti-locks.

that's been going on for awhile here in #Failifornia...

supposedly, it's something DMV testers have been gonging people on in driving tests.

what's funny is that, in many intersections, if you don't pull up onto the MAD sensor*, you'll be waiting a long time for a green light.

*those circles with a line coming off them to the curb? that's what they are.

set back from the line, they tell the system to either extend the length of green a bit, or, if you get there in the sweet spot of the cycle, you get a green arrow for a protected turn, usually left.

there is one near my house, where i have to turn to get to the freeway, so i'll always stop on the pad. people will pull up behind me and honk.

when i ignore them, the go around and drive up to the line. the arrow goes green, and, 9 out of 10, i pull up behind them, horn blaring, while they are blissfully unaware of the arrow. sometimes, i even end up going around them, to make the turn, which always gets them excited.

we're raised several generations of happy idiots out here.

280 still have my second car, a cherry little '84 black Rabbit GTi, with no power steering nor A/C.

The guy in the semi didn't even notice hitting me at first until I started going off road. I took a look at his spikes later. Wasn't even a scratch. On my car they dug until they hit a door beam. If it wasn't for that they would of kept plunging in. I wasn't injured but for a second my car was sliding diagonally part on the shoulder and part on the grass with a forest of trees right by me. Once I got it under control it was fine. But I could have ended up a pine tree ornament.

296 I am frugal-er than thou. Okay, 'cheaper' is a much more accurate word. My car prior to my present Chariot of Fyre was a '77 Lincoln 2-dr sedan - the Ultimate PimpMobile. Power everything, which was all good until it started to stop working. I eventually had to order the driver-side window regulator from LincolnLand in Clearwater, FL (and pay shipping, too.) When I drove it to my mechanic's shop to wait for the tow truck that would pick it up as my third donated car to Salvation Army, the rear brakes locked up as I drove it onto the pad and it wasn't going any futher. Period.

My PimpMobile II is now a 1998 Buick LeSabre Limited, and has undergone the same Shedding of the Clearcoat as PimpMobile Nr Uno. Research reveals that Buick (GM) was just starting to use clearcoat extensively in '98 and had many problems figuring out how to make it bond properly to paint. Lucky me. Other things have also given it up ... the regulator and power switch for the rear driver's side passenger window. The radio's AM band seems to be set permanently on 'squelch' now, and FM is the saving grace. There's a CD stuck in the CD drive that has defied removal since I bought the car in '07. Other areas are also Sources of Future Problems, but that comes with the territory. I paid $5K for it and plan to keep it as long as possible - in part because I refuse to participate in the 'Green Nude Eel' plan to put us all into a vehicle which we can't brake or steer and will probably always rent rather than own. 'Other-than-owner' control is not my idea of Happy Motoring ...

300 Resident 3vil has been leasing MB's for some time now, starting before i came along...

great cars, except for the one before this one.

they've pretty much been the SLC/SLK variety. (C300 now)

she's going in to w*rk on a Caturday to send out some stat meds. engine starts running ragged, so she pulls over, pushes the magic button, gets flat-bedded to MB Beverly Hills, picks up a loaner, and goes about her day.

they end up tearing down the engine to figure out "WTF?", and eventually find a cracked piston.

after 3 weeks or so, she finally gets it back.

fast forward a few months, and she's out running Saturday errands... pulling up to the cleaners, it starts running ragged again.

back to BH MB.

after a week or two, they decide the whole engine is "misaligned" or some such, and completely replace it.

she has the car back for a few weeks, and, one morning it flat out refuses to crank.

yup, back to BH MB, where her service rep and the service manager are beginning to cringe on sight of her and the car.

turns out they didn't completely replace the old engine, but had reused the old starter motor, and it had fried something.

new motor, new starter, and all is well in the world...

until, a couple of weeks later, the POS would not crank.

again.

in the end, BH MB stated they couldn't guarantee the car would be safe enough for her to drive down and turn it in at Fletcher Jones in Newport Beach, so she drove down in her BH MB loaner, emblazoned with their name, and picked up the C-300. she said they practically threw the car at her, the deal was so good.

the next day, she takes me for a spin, with the top down, and we stop to do a quick bit of shopping. standing outside the passenger side, i notice one of the window gaskets is malformed, and not sealing properly.

yup, less that 24 hours after P/U, and we have a defect. they tried the easy fix, but it didn't take, so this summer they replace the whole R R window assembly.

the other day, rolling down the freeway, a car was smoking badly...

not sure if it was engine, tranny or something else, but it WAS a brand new, high end MB.

their QC has gone to shit. our 99 C-230, used, ran W/O a glitch, until it stopped being used on a regular basis.

Consequently, I can't bring myself to part with my heavily-optioned '72 Cheyenne K10, even though it needs a ton of work to freshen up. I'm sure I'd hate myself the moment it went away.

Other vehicles I have and love are my '07 (Classic) GMC 3500 dually, which was the most trouble-free vehicle purchase I've ever made, and that takes into account the 3200mi. round-trip I made to trade off an E39 BMW 5-series for it. Got it with 32k on the clock, and it's around 120k, now. The other is a low-mile Audi Allroad I picked up at an auction for cheap, and I love-love-loooove it. When it starts going to pot (and it will!), I won't feel bad about throwing it away, 'cuz I got it so cheap. For now, I'm just enjoying a truly great driving wagon that I can haul the dog around in.

Mines is perfect. My daily truck is 24 yrs old, and no signs of fading at all. Since its over 20, it qualifies for 'antique' plates; no inspections, no checks, no emissions. Saves me hundreds of dollars in fees alone.

Insurance on older vehicles? Dirt cheap. 3 qualify as 'collector' so I pay under 100/yr on declared value for great coverage. Cheaper than owning a newer Nissan or whatever.

I'm sticking with my older vehicles I can work on and get parts for.

Sounds about right!

(1) The best people making predictions out there were saying that GA should not even be considered a "battleground state".

(2) Sidney Powell says it's the ONLY state that is 100% Dominion. It was mandated by the state, and as we've probably all heard, it was VERY recent. As far as unkind statements about top GA officials, she has risked having her ass sued off for defamation by calling out Gov Kemp in particular for being crooked (or maybe that was Lin Wood saying that?)

I'm driving a hand me down 2004 Cadillac DeVille which really isn't bad except that it's rusted out, is dropping body parts and has lots of niggly and expensive to fix problems.

It has a small coolant leak which the mechanic says costs more to fix than the car is worth. So I just add some coolant periodically from a stash in the trunk.

Rodents packed away dog food in the frame of the hood so the pneumatic hood braces don't hold it up. I use vice grips on the braces to keep the hood up.

It also has a problem where the fuel filler pipe is rusted and won't hold a seal, thus the check engine light is on. Another one of those things where the fix costs more than the thing's worth.

It's eventually going to be donated to a school which teaches disadvantaged kids to be auto mechanics.

I have a 2003 Honda Element and a 2001 Honda Civic. Both have over 160,000 miles and still run like new and have no rust. Rarely do they need any repairs and they've all been minor. I feel like I'm beating the system with these little gems.
