Meet The PetMorons

This adorable little shit is “Chesty Puller.” Like the eponymous Marine, Chesty is a veteran of sorts. About ten years ago, Chesty was taken into the rescue I foster for (the Director is a retired Marine) after being shot by a police officer during an apparent drug raid. Chesty was subsequently nursed back to health, trained and socialized, and adopted out about 8 years ago.
Fast forward to the present year, and his adoptive human - having since relocated to California to start his own rescue - is being extradited to Ohio on three dozen felony charges (conspiracy, tax evasion, narcotics, etc). We took legal action to get Chesty back, flew out to California, and drove the old man back to Ohio and into my care.
Chesty will not be adopted out again. He will stay within the rescue, living out his golden years with people who will love and protect this sweet little guy.

Good Lord, what an uphill battle Chesty has had. A happy looking pooch, hopefully he will live his last years dreaming of squirrels and being a couch hog. Thanks for all that you have done for animals.

Thank you for everything you do on the blog! I'm a fairly infrequent poster
with screen name "Fritz (not Fritz)" and I especially appreciate the Pet
Thread and the ONT.
This month marks the 5th anniversary of the passing of our dear sweet Mitzi
and what would have been her 20th birthday. Bending the rules with two
images, but I wanted to include a favorite picture of her and then a piece
of art a friend of ours created from it. Prints of the artwork hang in our
house and the apartments of each of our four children. She was both as
sweet and naughty as mini-doxies are destined to be and is greatly missed!

Well Fritz (not Fritz) with such a warm greeting how could we say "No" to two pics of Mitzi. She must have made quite an impression on you and your family. Thanks for sharing.

I had a grey kitten show up, she was skin and bones and clearly been on the street for a while.
I got her flea dope and wormed her and she is putting weight on. she is clearly a stray and not a feral.
I plan to get her into the vet's to look for a chip and get a found kitty notice out.
She has giant paws, I thought she was a six toed cat to begin with. - Kindltot

What a big heart you have. The modern day Good Samaritan. That kitty owes you a big thanks or two. Nice story. Please keep us informed if you find an owner or if you adopt her.

Here is Cracey, our 2-year old standard poodle. She is a hunting and retrieving machine, which earns me plenty of odd looks from the Spaniel/Setter/Labrador tribes, but she's made believers of them all. She's got her alligator mouth on full display here. - jackcoke

Cracey looks quite at home in the boat. She is only the 2nd hunting poodle I've ever heard of. I know you're not pulling my leg. Thanks for sharing today.

Hello again. You featured my two fur-bearing varmints Rally and Angus in the thread almost two years ago. I wish this was a happier update, but we had to say goodbye to Rally this weekend after fifteen years. She had been struggling with kidney issues for a long while, and took a sharp downturn last week.
Rally was such a great cat. She was shy and not especially affectionate in her younger years but turned into a fine lap cat and a proper Mistress of All She Surveyed as she went on. She was the only cat I've ever met who could actually mutter snarkily, which she often did if you dared tell her to wait while you dished up the food. It broke my heart to see her go, but I know right now she's probably hogging all the best warm spots and teasing my parents' old dog again. And sooner or later Angus and I will catch her up, at which point she'll break out that old fire-alarm yowl which means "the food bowl is empty, my head isn't being scratched and what are you going to do about it?"

Three years ago my cat Powder was featured on the world-famous pet thread, along with her friends Teddi the Dog and Abbott the Rabbit, who are my mom’s furbabies. We all shared a cramped house during mom’s convalescence from a serious car accident.
Three years later and much has changed. Mom is completely healed, I got married, and Powder passed over the Rainbow Bridge December 2018. My beautiful and awesome new bride had never had a pet before, and I’ve rarely been without one. So when one of her co-workers announced that she was giving away her cat…
Anyways, one week after getting hitched, we welcomed a new addition to our family- Salem. Perfectly timed for Halloween, Salem has already been completely spoiled by the two of us. Wife doesn’t know how to say “no” to the treat begging, and I never even tried resisting it with Powder, so why start now? He’s explored every part of our apartment, got stuck in a bathroom drawer, and is getting used to sitting on or next to us. But what he loves most is playing with a catnip-stuffed mouse that used to be Powder’s.
Wife didn’t know how much fun pets could be. She’s not a Trump fan, but doesn’t like Biden at all, so hopefully I’m slowly converting her into a Pet Moron. Salem is definitely a Trump fan; sometimes you can just tell.
Thanks to you and the other Pet Morons for always brightening up my Saturdays.

Reading the Pet Thread every week, gradually wore down my resistance
towards getting a dog, so I got my first one at 52 years old. We didn't
choose a beginner's dog, we got one who is quite the challenge but also
brings a great deal of joy.
Here's what my 10 year old son Eddie wrote:
Leo the Goberian (Golden Retriever/Siberian Husky) was a very energetic
puppy when we first got him at 3 months old. Leo loves all people and
can go very crazy when they arrive. Leo loves to play, walk and run and
he has a big smile on his face whenever he does any of these
activities. Now at 1 year and 9 months old, Leo is more calm and a
little less hyper. - Andrew and Eddie in Canada

You definitely are a brave man. A first time pet owner at 52. Brave, indeed. So the Pet Thread was a catalyst? I'm sure the Horde will get a kick out of this. Cute puppy now a gorgeous dog. Thank you for sharing!

9 In late July we had adopted an older pet rescue dog. The morons here were very helpful with tips and information in getting him acclimated and housebroken. I thank you all.

Unfortunately, Frankie passed away last week.

We await the necropsy information from Cornell as to what caused the encephalitis. Our last dog had a form of encephalitis he lived with for years, so that Frankie did not respond to treatment was devastating.

Poor little guy had a horrible life. He found his plush, forever home and then his body did him in. Sometimes, life really is not fair.

10 Oh Goodness! Mitzi looks just like our Moose! Moose is almost 7 years old and starting to slow down. He naps alot but still loves to chase the chipmunks and squirrels. We discovered a lump on his chest. It felt like fatty tissue and thankfully the vet agreed, so my daughter can rest easy he doesn't have cancer. Can't imagine my life without him.

We rescued two pups (the last two of a litter, found in a garbage bag in the city dump) from the vet in Marsh Harbor, Abaco, Bahamas. Brought them Sateside in 2011.
More fun than a barrel of monkeys, and fiercely loyal, loving dogs.

They are both gone now, and I like to think of them together again, back on the beach, chasing birds and digging up sand crabs.
Hole in my heart.

Worth it.

26 I'm not a hunter so my poodle isn't a retriever but, I suspect due to some primal instinct, all his favorite toys are fowl. We go through a lot of ducks, birds, and geese. He's a might spoiled so he has a large basket of toys. He'll dig past the bears, bones, etc. to find a bird. The last few days, however, he's been playing with a rhino. Maybe that's an even more primal instinct.

34 Oh Ann! So sad.

As I mentioned earlier, my older dog passed away very suddenly Friday afternoon - just yesterday.

He was my constant companion and an absolute gentleman at all times.

Not ready for a new dog for a little while, but his little sister is so devastated, and I do worry that she needs a new companion at some point. She's really lost without him.

Two things I've realized - from now on my dogs have to be smaller. I couldn't get him to the vet until my husband came home because he was collapsed, and weighed 95 pounds. I just couldn't lift him. So from now on, smaller dogs only.

And smaller dogs tend to live longer too, which is nice. I will TRY to stay away from large chested breeds; this dog was the one that nearly died of bloat over the summer as well.

Anyway, thanks for the wonderful Pet Thread, MisHum! it made me feel better to see everyone's lovely companions.

39 We had cockapoo that seemed to have more poodle in him than spaniel. Which seems odd that when the kids were little and we played whiffle ball in the back yard that dog would get right where the shortstop would play. Any ground ball hit his way, he'd scoop up smoother than Ozzie Smith, bring it to us, then go right back to his shortstop position and wait for the next ground ball to be hit.

Also it reminds me that he liked to have races around the house with the kids. We would give the kids a head start, when they would get almost half way we would let him go. He seemed to know what was going on, because he would stop when he got back around to us. Seemed like the darndest thing. Good times.

43 Congratulations to the fellow who took on his first dog at age 52. My wife and I have had dogs since I was a small child and she was a teenager (before we were married). Three years back we took on a two year old rescue dog from the local No Kill Humane Society. Even with more than 70 years of experience as a dog owner, Mija came with some problems. She loves people; she hates other animals with a passion. She's got acute separation anxiety and can be hyperactive.

As a retired couple we're home enough that the separation anxiety is not a major problem (well there was one instance early on). We had some help from a professional trainer; our home has a well fenced backyard that looks up at a brushy hillside where deer, coyotes, squirrels and quail run around. That's "entertainment" for the dog and she enjoys reacting to it. The kennel where we occasionally board the dog tells us, "She's crazy, but she's fun". Indeed the dog is crazy but fun, although the trainer ultimately recommended that we give the dog a Prozac pill each morning to "take the edge off". She is calm for most of each day---and always a loving and affectionate critter.

The local Humane Society tells us (and the experience of a neighbor who was a first time dog owner at age 60 or so) that not all "first time owner" adoptions succeed, and rescue dogs get returned to the Society.

I'm glad things worked out in Canada--the dog looks like a good one. And a good dog is truly a lot of fun to be around. Which is why I've owned dogs for 70 years.

53 That dog food diet reminds me of something that happened at Costco a few years back.

I was pushing my cart trying to avoid the swarms of entire families that come to Costco after church for lunch. But not for cheap hotdogs. Rather they go straight to the back and run from food sample to food sample as the crap on a cracker comes out of the toaster ovens.

Never, ever get between these people and the toaster ovens. They will kill you.

So, I was off on the side where the pet supplies and paper goods were, on my way to grab a 90 pack of paper towels. This older gentleman (well, the old part is correct) literally did an end run around me to cut me off with his cart.

Why? He was obviously afraid I'd beat him out to the sample table at the corner of the isle.

There was a lady standing there with a Costco sized bag of Beneful dried dog food on display, and a little metal bowl displaying what it looked like. Back then it was really weird brightly colored (almost fluorescent) shapes.

~~Unbelievably~~, the old guy grabbed a HUGE handful of the stuff out of the bowl, and shoved it in his face. God's honest truth. Nom, nom, nom.

After a moment he started spitting and coughing, and said this is terrible, what is this awful !@#&? And stormed off with his cart, voicing his displeasure at these disgusting snacks.

The poor lady, obviously didn't speak English very well looked at me with a confused expression, and pointed to the 40 lbs. bag with a giant happy golden retriever on it. She put a little bit more back into the bowl. I laughed and laughed.

And my route was clear to go get my paper towels, but at least I got a good 30 second floor show.

It may help someone to know that pet allergies, at least in our area close to Detroit, are very bad now.

Ralphy had a shot over a month ago, but started licking and chewing his paws. The vets office said every other call was due to allergies.

57 My son liked Milk Bones when he was small. We did our best to discourage him but didn't make a huge issue of it. Eventually he outgrew it and moved on to steak.

63 The first time a watched my friend's twin daughters we had a cat food mishap. I had my oldest at age 5, my youngest and the twins who were all 18 months. I had to change a diaper on one of the girls, so I did and in that two minutes I heard "no, Saskia!" And lots of laughter.

Salem is remarkable, and black cats in general (in my limited experience) are the best. A clerk at the grocery a month or so ago admitted to me that if she weren't allergic, she'd have a cat, and if it were black, "Salem" is what she'd name him.

I nodded. "Cat had the best lines on an TV show back then," and she grinned. (Well, okay, I couldn't see that, not with the face diaper, but her eyes crinkled and she nodded. Good enough for me.)

77 Lovely pets today!
I found the owner of the long haired black and white cat mentioned last week. A neighbor's grand daughter moved in with her while she goes to college. The cat spends her days in my yard, maybe because we have grass and shade, and I am good for a bowl of kibbles once a day. Anyway, glad I don't have to adopt it. She says the cat is 19, and she (the grand daughter) is 22.
Anyway, the cat is adorable and gives me the "slow blink".
Dexter, my male 10 year old cat, being an irascible turd, is having none of it, so I have to keep them apart, or else there is fur ball.

80 I took Boo to the vet yesterday after having to walk some 500 feet out into one of the back fields to find her.

While I was saying to one of the Vet Techs "Oh, I think she's under the weather, she's been coughing and sneezing a lot over the past week and a half..."

She jumped from the examining table onto my shoulder. Then from my shoulder to a rigid fluorescent light fixture hanging from the ceiling. About nine feet overhead.

One tech distracted her while the other one climbed onto the table to get her down.

(Then she got her shots).

It's not bad for a fifteen month old, 9 pound wannabe alpha predator.

I'm surprised she knows how veterinarian is spelled at her tender young age.

85 Kindltot, my experience with big-pawed kittens is that, given the right nutrition, they grow into BIG cats. If the ears and paws seem out of proportion to the rest of the kitten, he's liable to be a monster.

Eris, the Unflattering Cat Photo Contest is a winner. Though "Sirius" and "Freya" seem like excellent names for the right cat.

Frankie was smaller, only 12 pounds when we got him (15 pounds when he passed away- he was very underweight but hubby got him plumped-up). My first dog was 90 pounds and had both his knees replaced. That was when I decided that I needed a smaller dog so I could tote them around if they got ill.

I think I cursed myself as the last dog was ill for years, and now poor little Frankie. BTW, that large 90 pound dog was the longest lived of all my dogs.

102 Linda picked up one of the plug-in cat fountains at Petco while it was on sale last week and brought it over.

Unfortunately the cats have ignored it. I did see the younger cat, Wolf, drinking from it one evening last week. Clearly he's not using it, as he still begs me for running water from the bathroom sink tap. The older cat, Chekov, shows no interest in the contraption. I still have to put a bowl of fresh water down every morning and evening for them. It probably doesn't help that it hums like the Starship Enterprise at cruising speed.

Is there any way to entice them to use it? I've tried putting their food right next to it, and they eat and don't drink.

Never had that happen. But the older cat was expressing his plumbing issues not only on the bathroom floor but in a couple of other spots on the carpet before I got him onto this prescription diet. I know it wasn't his fault. No doubt he had concluded, quite reasonably, that the way he felt was the fault of the litter box, and if he didn't use it now and then, things would be fine.

And . . . he just threw up on the dinette table. I wonder if he saw the black one do it, and it's contagious, like yawning.

157 On the blandness thing, I wonder if that is intentional. A Dog's sense of smell (and hence taste, I assume) is FAR stronger than ours, so what seems bland to me might taste like a wonderful, rich, savory treat to him.

My only interaction was with DaughterH's standard poodle. It had enough energy to do any thing she wanted to do, but was not a bonkers high energy dog. And it was one of the nicest and smartest dogs I've ever met!

I've got a cat on the porch who has adopted us here at Casa New Dawn, and I'll be getting pics and a story 'bout him to OM in the next few weeks.

He's a nearly all-black shorthair, neutered. He needs a permanent home, as we can't bring him in to mingle with the indoor cats.

He's got that Feline Lukemia thing, which means anytime we pet him or bring in his food bowl, it's major handwashing time.

But. And this is important. He's a cat that was BORN to snuggle on your lap and up against your chest. It. Is. His. Drug. Of. Choice.

He's about two years old. Given the disease, he's got may two to four years life expectancy.

And I'd really like to find him a home, before winter.

Wasn't it Beckoning Chasm who was looking for a cat to adopt? IIRC? If correct, just tell him my email is in my nic.

We have two standards. They're incredibly athletic but have an off switch. They're very smart and need intellectual and physical stimulation or they'll make their own entertainment. Most well bred standards I've met are like this - they'll lounge on a couch with you as long as they get their play time in.

Side note, lot of inbreeding dating back to a kennel from the 60s and a lot of doodle breeders causing problems in the breed, but you can still get beautifully bred, sound poodles from quality breeders. Recommend checking out Better Bred and Standard Poodle Diversity facebook group for breeders trying to produce healthy standards if you ever want to bring one home!

Well, see, with people there are other things mixed in with the love, stuff like occasional resentment or jealousy. You love your aged mother, but you resent the time you spend taking her to the grocery, etc. Then you feel guilty, which is another thing in the mix.

DaughterH did a painting of her Great Pyrenees that came out beautifully. SisterH did an incredible one of her beloved Corgi. I can only do photos of my pets.

To be fair, my daughter did discover the kitten under our RV...We had just gotten her a kitten and we brought it with us to the MoMe. The next morning my daughter heard the kitten meowing and though it was her kitten but it wasn't. So we fed it and forced it on Duncanthax...I mean, we literally had to hold a gun to his head, so to speak, to make him take that kitten home. Everyone thought it was a boy kitten too...heh!

"Glory" their chocolate lab pup also. I have her sitting and presenting paw on command and they are surprised. I told them I was a special Ed teacher so Glory is easy.
