Man standing on the ox cart is looking at the woman with the kid. You know why ? Here is the story...She is the one who got away. He was pining for her, but a dashing blacksmith with massive muscles captured her fancy. They got married, had a kid and a dashing blacksmith started cheating on her with a barmaid while she was gathering grapes in the fields. Later she found out and killed herself. They fished her sad body out of Loire.

This is almost photo realistic. The detail is incredible. But it has an added layer of a subdued romantic quality. The low daylight allows an even, clear scene with nothing lost in shadow. The soft color in most of the clothing, grass and soil, even the oxen, reflects the gentle overcast sky. It is all of a piece and is quite restful. I can't say it celebrates rural living, the people are working, not dancing, but they make a living from it.
I find this kind of painting restful and revealing. The details show cultural aspects of work, clothing, and even economics. Interesting. Posted by: JTB at August 24, 2020 09:47 AM (7EjX1) Posted by: Bruce at August 24, 2020 09:47 AM (vd8XM) 135

Evidently, some people don't realize that downwind of a farm on a hot and humid day can be rather odiferous.

I always find it amusing that "The Persistence of Memory" is the only Dali painting anyone actually remembers.
His Sacrament of the Last Supper was a popular dorm room poster in the 70s. We saw it in the modern art thing that's adjacent to the National Gallery in DC. After a whole day of looking at brushstrokes from Monet and van Gogh and thinking oh that's how he did it I had no idea how Dali did it. Anthony Ciani's comment from his essay in American Thinker is painfully, sadly and ironically true. Trump, the president who said we would never become a socialist country, is ushering it in with his accommodations to Covid panic. He's been off on this issue from the beginning and will not address or arrest what's being done to the American people.
I'm sure his motives are excellent. He cares about people. He wants to help and save people. But in six months we've lost more liberties under Trump than any President in modern history. If he has a plan to demolish this new superstructure of fear now ruling our lives and return us to normal, to lead us through the fear instead of conceding the legitimacy of the fears, I'd like to see it. I always find it amusing that "The Persistence of Memory" is the only Dali painting anyone actually remembers.
His Sacrament of the Last Supper was a popular dorm room poster in the 70s. We saw it in the modern art thing that's adjacent to the National Gallery in DC. Michigan SOS Benson to mail millions of postcards to encourage absentee voting https://bit.ly/34uJO2O Michigan is sending postcards to more than 4 million registered voters, encouraging them to apply to vote absentee in the November election. The state also plans to spend millions in order to reimburse local cities that offer pre-paid return envelopes for absentee ballots. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at August 24, 2020 10:03 AM So thinking about this more, this seems to be an end-around the absentee voting process. With absentee voting, one has to be proactive and actually request the absentee ballot. With this, they are sending out the post-cards and now anyone can send them back requesting absentee ballots. Yes, you have to sign the absentee ballot you send in, but if now *everyone* is voting absentee, do you really think they are going to check every single signature to verify it? Not likely. RIPE for vote fraud here. Would not expect anything less from Half-Whitmer and her team of corrupt scrunts. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at August 24, 2020 10:18 AM (Do5/p) 310

Presidents don't have the power to "shut everything down."
If they think they have the power, then they have the power. The animals that populate our political system these days don't think that government should have any limits at all. 356 I've thought about automatically sunsetting laws, but Congress's first act each session would be to pass a law saying "all of our totally awesome laws are hereby renewed, except any tax or spending reductions which may have passed in the last increment." And that would be veto-proof.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at August 24, 2020 10:31 AM (y5Hk9) ======== The constitutional amendment that demands for sunsetting of laws should also forbid the passing of laws that affect more than one department at a time and dictate that all laws must be repassed individually. Here's what I wrote to our hapless mayor this morning:
You said our community is suffused with systemic racism. Then you condescended to those of us who know that is nonsense, by telling us we aren't paying attention. Our police chief told the truth when he said that teen gangbangers are beyond redemption and need to be imprisoned. He told the truth when he said that these criminals need to be shoved OUT of Rockford any way we legally can. Then you undercut him by saying everybody who lives in Rockford is "valuable," which again is platitudinous nonsense, and makes you look like a weakling and a sap to the evil SOBs who are attacking us. Somebody in our leadership has to find the guts to tell our black underclass that their problems are their own damn fault, not the fault of white racists who oppress them. You need to stop spouting the Marxist cant and crazy dogma that animates the evil BLM and Antifa destroyers. Look at Kenosha this morning. That's Rockford's future, unless our leadership sacks up and tells the truth about the dysfunction of our black underclass. I hope you appreciate that I'm not among the people who demonstrate outside your home. I'm not among the people who get arrested every damn week for breaking the law at the protests. I'm not one of the guys who is shooting up our streets. I'm just a guy who sends you emails, pays his taxes, and has been a good citizen of this city for four decades. Don't get mad at me; get mad at the evil-doers for a change. ----- The mayor replied that I am seeking simple answers to complex problems. When we lived in Baltimore, our community had to eventually replace our entrance sign. One of the things we were told by smart white folk was that we needed to remove any reference to covenants, as it was inherently racist. When we bought our home here in South Carolina, I asked my black neighbors how they felt about our community sign containing the fact that we had restrictive covenants. They laughed, and told me that it kept the riff-raff out. Covenants were considered a positive factor for them. They about choked when I explained our previous communities experience. You take away the threat of fining them for not wearing one and the number wearing it will drop off. You take away the demand that they must wear one to enter a store and the number drops off a cliff. If people really truly believed they were useful then no mandates would be required. Just finished watching "The Silent Speaker," an episode of the A & E Nero Wolfe series from 2001-03. A superb adaptation; they use not only the plot and situations from Rex Stout's 1947 novel but great whacking hunks of the dialog. Maury Chaykin shouts a bit too often as Wolfe, and Tim Hutton is a little too "New York tough guy" as Archie (who was from Ohio, after all, not Brooklyn). But not enough to spoil the total effect.

But someone coming from New York City would not. That quarantine regulation is pretty much unenforceable anyway, and to get around it someone visiting could just stay in Maryland or Virginia and go into DC via public transportation, rental car, or via a cab or a car service. Plus the list of states changes every 2 weeks; for example, Delaware was on it, got taken off for 2 weeks, and is now back on it. It's a farce. 428 On the all-important college football front, Gretchen Whitmer is getting all kinds of push-back for refusing to allow college football in MI. She's the only governor in the B1G states who doesn't want to play out the season. The other B1G states are now talking about playing some kind of season without Michigan teams.
Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis at August 24, 2020 10:49 AM (sWM8x) it'll be pretty funny if she destroys Michigan football for good. I'm going to enjoy seeing all the top recruits jump over to the SEC and any other leagues that are playing - they know that their future hopes for a professional payday go into the shitter if they take a year off while so many others keep on practicing and playing. They have to leave schools that won't play. And once a school loses an entire year of recruits, they're guaranteed to be cellar dwellers for at least a decade, if not more.
