For First Time Since Covid Shutdowns, Weekly Jobless Claims Fall Below One Million

Light at the end of the tunnel?

First-time claims for unemployment insurance last week fell below 1 million for the first time since March 21 in a sign that the labor market is continuing its recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

The total claims of 963,000 for the week ended Aug. 8 were well below the estimate of 1.1 million from economists surveyed by Dow Jones. That represented a decline of 228,000 from the previous week’s total.

Jobless claims had totaled above 1 million for 20 consecutive weeks as the U.S. economy went into lockdown to contain Covid-19. The last time the total was below that number was March 14, with 282,000, just as the pandemic declaration first hit.

Below, Pence notes that the Trump/Pence administration posted more new jobs the last three months than in all of Obama/Biden's eight years in office.

18 Apologies for early OT, but this, Clinesmith, and the 9th Circuit magazine ban decision make this a great day of entrumpening.

Willowed.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday

threw out California's ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines, saying

the law violates the U.S. Constitution's protection of the right to

bear firearms.

"Even well-intentioned laws must pass constitutional muster," appellate Judge Kenneth Lee wrote for the panel's majority.

Posted by: SMOD at August 14, 2020 04:31 PM (X5CsJ)

Expect
an en banc rehearing, which may make this short-lived. But for the time
being, they applied strict scrutiny to CA's infringement, which is a
welcome change from other circuits, and may become a circuit split to
make SCOTUS finally determine that the 2A is not so different as other
fundamental liberties that require strict scrutiny to pass
constitutional muster.
It is a victory. But it may be a temporary victory of a battle in the long war.

61 All this good news means is that the Democratic Party will redouble their efforts to cripple the economy leading up to November.

The entire absurd Covid-19 panic is simply a mechanism to induce a recession and reverse Trump historical economic gains. Period. The Dems know from long analysis that incumbents win when the economy is good, basically 100% of the time. Their ONLY chance to defeat Trump is to ruin the economy, and fast.

SO they did that but the whole "shutdown" thing spiraled out of control and now they can't stop it -- even though MOST of the people enduring the worst effect from the shutdown are in the Dem voter constituency (urban dwellers, minorities, etc.).

Ho matter. THe Dems CAN'T let the economy bounce back before November, or they know they are doomed electorally.

So watch them over the next four months go MAX DESTRUCTION on the American economy, regardless of who suffers. Sacrifices must be made for the greater good! THe ends justify the means!

96 85 Didn't listen to the whole statement, but Pence comparison pretty misleading without context - similar if not as absurd as the Dems claiming Trump has had worst unemployment since Depression.

Since it (job loss) was 100% artificial (and short-term) in nature, they supported the policies causing it (and then some), and mostly because of course Trump presided over one of the lowest unemployment (in peace-time) rates since the Depression.

140 Of course the CDC doesn't know, and it's judgment is not really to be taken all that seriously, unfortunately, but beyond that, "cases" are a multi-layered mess. They don't *have* to be, though given the limits of testing technology they should be expressed in at least 2-4 "types".

CLI (COVID-Like Illnesses) are a much better (and more relevant) thermometer for trends. This is a count given to feds by hospitals that has no lag (same day), has a fairly reasonable and uniform definition (some states are lumping in PCR tests with serological tests, which is unbelievable), and is very concretely related to all that matters, acute cases and deaths.

Old, run down homes, mostly owned by blacks were purchased, renovated or torn down and replaced, and lived in. There are a lot of gays and young families there now. The streets are clean, the yards are well kept... there are lovely little parks and community p-patches.

174 Haven't checked details yet, but 9th's panel decision probably actually *not* a result of recent personnel changes. Every once in a while the random drawing for panels results in a rational lawful decision. There was a yuuuge one on concealed carry a few years back, written specifically to dare the 9th to overturn it en banc, by basically incorporating most of Heller. Of course the en banc overturned it without breaking a sweat, and mindful that of all SCOTUS rulings in history, Heller is basically moot and SCOTUS won't police its enforcement.

I think the "tribal" balance on the 9th still barely favors the authoritarian social engineers. But much closer than before.

The other guy was a raging dickhole. He handled our paychecks. We would go to his palatial estate to pick them up, and he wouldn't let us set foot on the property. 238 I thought the school reopening thing might be a major iceberg, with fireworks, on all this. Because it did something you still can't do in America (or so I thought) - actually negatively affect millions of people, heavily, with specific policies.

O-care and other things are a catastrophe for millions, but that's a secret to almost everyone, and of course the GOP and Trump can skate on doing much/anything about it because most people - who aren't affected - don't care.

But the school re-opening is dramatically different. And my gawd, the teacher's unions have vastly exceeded my expectations in terms of insane, unreasonable, hysterical reactions and demands.

But .... I'm not seeing much, yet. Sadly one cannot rule out that America today is an inscrutable mystery - will handily re-elect Trump, but at the same time not lift a finger to relieve the damage being caused by incumbents, the Dems, and many GOP in levels below the presidency.

258 And there are also about 6 separate unemployment rates the the govt publishes.

And they always change according to the goals of the administration. Bronco Bama very conveniently changed all of them to exclude two of the things most families spend the most on: food and energy. That made his number look great to LIVs.
Meanwhile, I watched grocery prices down here double inside of 5 years yet the official inflation rate was never over 1%. Lies, damned lies and statistics, in ascending order of bullshit.

Yep. Which is why the UE rate is kind of a dumb thing to use as a measure of the economy. What matters is the labor participation rate.

I think you mean inflation not unemployment. And there is core CPI with and without food/energy. Obama didnt change that. The media just started reporting on one and not the other whichever made Obama look better.

"Kentucky judge's secretary denies threesome, says it was a prank

"A suspended Kentucky judge accused of turning her chambers into a glorified frat house and having a threesome with staffers was only pulling a prank, her secretary testified in court this week, according to a report.

. . . .

"During earlier testimony, courthouse custodians, deputy clerks and other staffers described alcohol containers found in Gentry's chambers, singing and guitar playing, as well as moaning and grunting sounds."

Oregon State Police are pulling out of Portland after the DA Mike Schmidt announce that he would not be prosecuting crimes such as Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Interference With a Police Officer, and so forth.
