35 Ginevra Aldrovandi's husband, the Bolognese senator Ercole Hercolani, died in 1593. Her elaborate mourning costume-with costly brocade, lace, and pearls-indicates her high social status. She holds a handkerchief, suggesting the tears she shed at her husband's death. The lapdog is her pet, but it also carries symbolic significance. During the 16th century, a widow who did not re-marry, staying faithful to her husband's memory, was often compared to a dog that was faithful to its master.

A: They want to.

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at July 29, 2020 09:39 AM (mht8P)

47 my impression is that there was little upside to a rich widow remarrying back then.
Assuming she has a son to inherit, remarrying would only mean giving up her wealth and independence.

63 Now this is an effective portrait of a wealthy, possibly titled, woman who has power or means to get what she wants. The unsmiling expression, the use of dark but very rich colors, and the white detailed accessories all combine to give the impression of wealth and influence. It's a very nice way to say "Don't mess with me."

As stern as she appears, she is woman enough to enjoy the pearls (must have been a huge expense) and careful fabric work on her collar and cuffs. And her little dog, too. (Margaret Hamilton voice.)

I'm surprised this female pioneer artist isn't lauded more. Her bio reads more like a modern woman than what people expect from the 1500s.

Thanks, CBD. Lavinia Fontana is new to me and I'll be looking at her other works.

Tell you a little story. Over on another well-respected Conservative Site, there was a discussion going on of policing vs militia vs vigilantism, and a guy remarked that the famous painting of the Night Watch was a group portrait of mercenaries who patrolled the streets. They are very well armed.

And a Big Old Conservative replied that art nuts are usually Democrats, and the guy was probably some kind of leftist for knowing that.

The response was that there was it was Rembrandt, damn it, and that painting had a two-page feature article ... in "American Rifleman."

In the ONT, all art is mocked. But one thing about AoS is that you can at least see the picture first before you make the dirty joke about it.

We focused on people like Tlaib who were running around screaming about impeachment, but Democrats in other districts didn't repeat the idea. They talked about generalized healthcare ideas that they wanted to work across the aisle on and get stuff done.

And then every single damn Freshman Democrat from Trump districts voted to advance impeachment.

And then the riots started.

They successfully localized the races in 2018 (along with intentional weaknesses on the Republican side), and I really doubt that will work in a presidential election year.

I call my cat's barfings an unholy trinity because she usually does it three times. She was a rescue so I think she has food insecurity and after eating her own wet food she immediately goes to gobble up the other cat's dry food. Dry food does not agree with her. You think she would have learned this by now, but alas, no.

273 I know there would be a lot of smarty pants comments if used on the art thread, but take a look at Fontana's "Portrait of Antonietta Gonsalvus". This was a girl born with a medical condition of excessive hair over her whole body. Her portrait by Fontana is extraordinary. She shows the little girl, maybe 10 years old, exactly with her medical condition. Yet she manages to let people see the little girl beneath the hair.

At first glance the painting is odd, maybe disturbing. But look at the girl's eyes and expression. That's a young child looking back at you. The talent to achieve that is huge.

The announcement of the VP choice is supposed to be an event during which donations are supposed to spike. Leaking it a week early undermines that.

Barr does not not seem like a doormat, but he has turned the Trump administration into one, through inaction. 375 I am fully in support of the effort by the union of education salary recipients to abolish in-person, face-to-face learning efforts. I also support the expansion of the classroom size to 1 state. I'd even be generous enough to have a separate teacher per grade for reading, writing, and arithmetic...and toss in an art teacher. 13 grades, 4 teachers per grade, 1 administrator, 1 office aide, no need for all the brick and mortar buildings and the taxes need to support them. I would gladly offer up a reduced education infrastructure of 54 individuals per state as a counter to their eternal summer break plan.

Yesterday was obviously a coordinated strategy to toss out accusations and questions and then refuse to let Barr respond. It was so bad it became an instant classic, Reclaim My Time!

So why?

Jim Jordan was right. Ever since Barr's Senate hearing over a year ago when he said that the Obama administration spied on the Trump campaign and the only question was whether or not it was properly predicated Democrats have had a bullseye on Barr.

Not saying it was a good strategy but cornered rats do irrational things. It's all they've got.

Yes, of course. This is *the* problem. You can't "make your own X" without having an entire integrated economy to go with it. The entirety of high-tech and a lot of smaller manufacturing and distribution is cartelized. The specific tech monopolies direct policy and collude with each other to pinch out wrongthink, and they apply pressure to those not in the cartel to ensure that they get their way. It's authoritarian private technocracy. And the FTC does nothing. Both monopoly and cartels are illegal on their face (the usual standard is "consumer harm" but even that isn't technically required, despite the fact that "consumer harm" is readily apparent), and they do nothing. No breakups. No ruinous fines. No director prosecutions. Nothing.

Because they like it.
