49 Anyone else have anxiety dreams? Maybe that's not the technical term, but it's what I call them - dreams that seem ordinary at first, but then stuff keeps piling up that you're not getting done, and more and more keeps happening, and you get more and more behind and more frantic until finally you wake up, and you'd like to feel relieved the dream wasn't real but you're still feeling all the physiological effects of the stress hormones and other junk dumped into your system. Sort of like those dreams that are so terrifying you wake in a sweat with your heart pounding and your throat raw from screaming - I have those sometimes too. AFAIK I don't actually scream out loud but it feels like I have - but anxiety instead of terror.

67 Talking about anxiety...
Those of you who are following along know that about 2 weeks ago mom decided to wander away from the house.  (My nightmare scenario.)

Yesterday afternoon she decided to do it again.  It was a fairly "normal" day here.  She "helped" when I trimmed some bushes earlier in the day. She was puttering in the yard when I cleaned the outsides of the downstairs windows.  We made cookies.  She was her pleasant self until 3 p.m.  That's when she closed the shades and curtains.  I asked if she was going to bed and she said no. I told her we close them when we go to bed, and since it was only 3:00 in the afternoon and a beautiful sunny day we should keep them open.  She flipped out, yelling at me that she always did it this way, and i should just go home. (She included a few choice swear words). Mom never used to swear. It's like she has a whole different personality sometimes.   Well, she carried on like a 3 year old having a tantrum for about 20 minutes.  Then she turned on the TV and sat in her chair to watch.  From where I was sitting at the kitchen table passing time doing a crossword puzzle, I can see into the living room.  I hear her get up from her chair and see her walk towards the door.  She slowly and very q-u-i-e-t-l-y opens the door.  I peer around the doorway from the kitchen, and she's already outside!  I look out the window to the backyard and she's got her purse with her, and is quickly (for her) walking toward the side yard that leads to the road.  I run out and ask her if she's taking a walk and I say I will come with her, that she shouldn't go by herself.  That went over well.     I was told to go away, she could do whatever she wanted to do.  I said a walk would be nice idea, but she turned around and went back to the porch and sat down.  Of course I sat down too.  She called me names for the next few minutes and was extremely rude. I explained that she can't go walking alone, and why.  (She has no memory of getting lost, being taken by ambulance, or even being in the hospital that last time she left for a walk. Told me I was lying and making up crazy stories.)  After a short while, still mad at me, she got up, went into the house and went upstairs, and I presumed was going to bed.  I went back to my puzzle.  After a lot of clunking around upstairs, she came back downstairs.  She had changed her clothes. She sat down in her chair in the living room without a word to me.  I prepared supper, we ate without a word spoken.  Afterwards we did our usual routine of the dishes and then her watching TV, me in the same room, reading.   She dozed in her chair, woke up about 7:00, and in a very snotty tone asked, "now is it time to pull that thing down?" (pointing to the shade on the porch door).  Clearly she was still mad and remembered the earlier incident!   Keeping my cool, I ask if she wants to go to bed, and she says she does.  We go upstairs and she does her nightly get-ready-for-bed routine while I am in my room.  As she goes into her room she pleasantly says, "good-nite, see you in the morning!" just like always.

I'm afraid to take my shower because I don't know if I can trust her to not take off when I can't hear her!   After about an hour, I decide it's safe to quickly shower.  All was okay, but I am a wreck.  Of course I'm afraid to fall asleep. I've been dozing on and off, hoping she won't try this in the middle of the night.  My door is open and I always wake up when she gets up to use the bathroom, so I guess it will be okay.

She did get up to pee about 2 hours ago, then went back to her bedroom.  Took her a long time to lay back down.  I'm really hoping she is too afraid of the dark to try to escape!

This is a whole new angle of this mom-care thing.  I feel so unprepared for this next level, and am trying to be calm but inside I am totally panicked!

Look at simplisafe alarm systems. They're self install and you can just put alarms on the doors to signal you (and the alarm company if you want, but you can disable it) when they open. You can probably find something similar at Amazon or Lowes just for the doors without the alarm system but I'm not familiar with anything else.

90 It's not news. It's work. I have three roles and at least six people assigning me work, and none of them consult with me or the others to make sure my workload is manageable. I usually tell them when they can expect stuff to get done, but I just got a bunch of new actions assigned that all HAVE to get bumped to the top of the list. I'm also holding down the fort at home alone. Thankfully, the 4yo's daycare is open, but I've still got the 8yo on my own all day while I handle meetings. In a good week, I have only 20 hours of meetings; in a bad week, it can be 50 or more (overlapping, so arranging coverage is part of my job). Once the meetings are done for the day, we pick up the 4yo, and I have to keep the kids from killing each other until my husband gets home, which usually isn't until 7 or 8. At that point, I can do my actual work.

I will have childcare for the 8yo starting in July, so hopefully that will help. But the workload is only going to get worse as we approach our major event next year. And the school district hasn't yet confirmed they're going to actually open in the fall...

Their son's (3) all were a mess when they got older into their 20's. one suicide, Another is gay and really screwed up, and the third is living in prison...So sad.

Sorry about the that MLI. You have to sleep. I know that sounds stupid to say but it is absolutely true. That's one of the things the people that work for me have to understand. Everyone understands the need up to a point but I have to sit some of my people down sometimes and really talk to them about it because they try to "just get by".

tldr- Get some help. You have to sleep!

98 Mlii - so sorry. The anger is one of the hard parts of handling dementia. That's how my grandma got toward the end of her life - she was convinced Mom, the only one of her kids who actually had her best interests at heart, was stealing from her, etc. - and it's what I'm expecting my mom will go through, hopefully not for a couple decades. You are doing the Lord's work in caring for your mom and being so wonderfully patient.

Went to Bing and while the American Flags are nice, this is the first thing I see:

We stand in solidarity with the Black community and all those working toward racial equality. A message from our CEO

Clicking on that...

https://bit.ly/2Yy0QIv

Change in ourselves helps drive change in the world

Finally, we must carry our company values out into the world in a way that reflects our strengths and expertise. To this end, we will deepen our engagement with six organizations that are advancing social justice, helping community organizers address racial inequality, and offering solidarity to the Black community: Black Lives Matter Foundation, Equal Justice Initiative, Innocence Project, The Leadership Conference, Minnesota Freedom Fund, and NAACP Legal Defense & Education Fund. This starts with a company donation of $250,000 to each of these organizations ($1.5 million in total), followed by a company match of our employees' contributions to eligible organizations. Together, through your giving and the company match, we have donated more than $15 million to civil rights, social action, and advocacy nonprofit organizations since 2015.

I guess there is just no place to get away from this stuff. Every company in the country has bent the knee to BLM.

Do you have deadbolt locks on all your exit doors? They not only keep you safe, but will keep your mom from wandering. She won't be able to just turn the knob and go outside. We had to have them put in when my dad started to wander and we all wore a key on a lanyard on each of us in case we needed to get out. ( we live less than a mile from a major highway and when they wander, as you have experienced, they suddenly get the strength and speed of their youth!) We also put a lock on the door to the cellar so he couldn't open the door and tumble down the stairs.

Also, anything sharp that can be used like a weapon needs to be put away, in a closet or cupboard. Do not leave anything out or within easy reach; don't leave those fancy knives in a holder on the kitchen counter. A police officer once gave us this advice as he had been through it with his own father. In a moment, a person's personality can change or they can get confused and try to defend themselves by grabbing whatever is at hand, without realizing that you mean them no harm.

Do you have any relatives or friends who can help/visit for a little while or can you get a caregiver to come in, even for just a couple of hours each week? An occasional one or two hour break for you will keep you from wearing out. It is too stressful to face alone and you need to give yourself a little time of rest now and then. Keep yourself healthy!

Do you have any local support groups? If you do, give it a try and if it seems to be a place that works for you, attend. If they provide any resources which help, avail yourself of them.

You and your mom are in my prayers and the Horde folks are all good people: add your name to the weekly prayer list.

Sending you and your mom some virtual hugs {{{{ }}}}

136 Early morning -- the best time! Oddly, Iused to be a night person. When I was in college, I considered that if God had intended us to be up at 7 am, He'd have made it happen after noon.

Then I worked morning and evening shifts, including going to work at 5 am for a number of years. And steadily my metabolism and outlook shifted. Now I rarely sleep past 5:30 am, and enjoy the early morning because I have the streets mostly to myself; the world is quieter, and the summer heat (which here lasts for 10 months) is less. The humidity is still vicious, but you can't have everything.

He really was quite good. At the beginning of the show they had him as the eclectic crewman, the one with a new hobby every few weeks: botany in one episode, fencing in another, guns in a third. He seemed very likeable, a "regular guy."

I happened to catch his performance in the Season Three show, the one where Lee Meriwether touches you and your cells explode. She gets a finger on him, and from the way he sounded at the moment and afterward, you'd really think he was in agony.

His creepy, scarred, knife-wielding security officer in "Mirror, Mirror" was very effective too.

He cannot do this without commending the healing American ideal, and without infuriating the Left. Both of which are good results. He need to expose the enemy, clarify the conflict and represent and exalt the American "answer."

After watching that, I can see now how easy it is for BLM to summarize that as "he was shot in the back for sleeping in a Wendy's parking lot!"

I have no sympathy for this jackass, since he put himself in a situation to be arrested and then resisted arrest for no reason.

That said, I'm not sure why the officer deemed it necessary to shoot him. Let alone 3 times. While he was running away.

I get that he had a taser, but that's a non-lethal weapon.

And, as far as I know, this guy was not being arrested for a violent crime, he was being arrested for being a public nuisance (drunk in a Wendy's drive-thru).

And while he violently resisted arrest, he was drunk. People do stupid-ass things when they're drunk. Does not mean they are such a threat that they need to be put down with lethal force.

So, yeah, I can understand the outrage in this situation.

That said, nothing justifies the actions then taken because of that outrage: rioting again, blocking traffic, burning down the Wendy's.

I may have been sympathetic to their outrage over this specific incident, but not anymore.

This Brooks got himself shot after he had been resisting arrest, got possession of a taser, and then discharged it at one of the officers while running away. You can very clearly see the discharge of the taser in the surveillance (?) video.

Discharging a taser at a police officer becomes a deadly force situation. If the officer becomes disabled by a taser hit, a real possibility exists that the perpetrator will take the officer's sidearm and kill him with it. In this case, the shooting officer had a reasonable fear that Brooks was trying to double-back to get the other officer's sidearm.

233 Happy Birthday DJT.

When will America figure out that "he fights" not just by combative by nature, but because he's fighting for America?

We are opposed by a strongly ideological party: the leftists. They have a coherent world view that is anti-American: seeking to tear down the foundational values of the country to "transform" it into its own nemesis. They do so in the name of varying rationales: anti-racism, anti-fascism, egalitarianism etc etc, but the effect is the same: Abolish our foundational concepts of individual liberty and federalism and put everyone in the complete control of an all powerful, federal government power.

The GOP, unfortunately, is not ideological except for a few: the Rand Pauls and a smattering of nationalist patriots. But in the main they are just office holders, sitting on the sidelines and not wanting to take any strong stance in defense of our core values (and history) because they might jeapardize their phony balony jobs.

What Ace has been pointing out about rent-seeking Conservative Inc is as true for the office holders as the supposed "conservative" punditry and Thinktankery.

So no one seems to be fighting the ideological battle for the values of America much beyond Trump, who is figthing the entire left, and the leftist culture it marinates in.

236 Flag Day!

"In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The Flag Resolution, passed on June 14, 1777, stated: "Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." This design was created by Francis Hopkinson, a Continental Congressman from New Jersey and a consultant to the design of the Great Seal of the United States.

The United States Army also celebrates the U.S. Army birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775."

Thank you for this perspective and info, Retired Buckeye Cop. I don't know the protocol, so that's where my questions came from regarding use of lethal force.

I sent the same questions to my brother to get his insight on his protocols in Chicago PD.

I wonder if this officer has a claim against the city for unjust termination. Especially if he did everything by the book (i.e. discharging a taser becomes a situation for use of lethal force.)

That said, I'm not sure why the officer deemed it necessary to shoot him. Let alone 3 times. While he was running away.

I get that he had a taser, but that's a non-lethal weapon.

I didn't see in the body cam footage where the cops conducted any
kind of check of the car or the perp for weapons. When the guy turned
and fired the taser, maybe the cop saw the flash and thought he had
fired a gun. It's gonna be interesting to see what comes out of this
when it's investigated.

245 "That said, I'm not sure why the officer deemed it necessary to shoot him. Let alone 3 times. While he was running away."

With all due respect if you have already made a decision to use deadly force you'd be an idiot to shoot once at a moving target and wait for effect. You might have hit him, or not.

Everyone who never shot a firearm thinks you can just aim for the pinky toe and disable the attacker. The shot may have been a glancing/non disabling wound, or not. It may have been a mortal wound, but the shootee may in his present state be able to continue the fight long enough to stab or shoot you anyway.

Anything you shoot at once is worth shooting at, at least, 2-3 times. I don't know the merits of the initial decision, but the number of shots is probably the least important metric as to justification IMO.

Understood. It's really easy for people to see a video and think they would know exactly what to do and how exactly to act in the same situation.

"Well, *I* would have done this" or "*I* would have done that", etc. No one has any idea what they would have done unless they have been in the situation.

One thing I asked my brother is whether or not there is police training to shoot to injure someone. Basically shoot to disarm or something.

Granted, again, when in the situation, it's not exactly simple to aim to shoot someone other than center of mass that (1) you know will disarm the person and (2) will not hit somewhere that will kill them.

Ironically, the Atlanta incident puts more context to the George Floyd incident. Because you can see an example of how a cooperative suspect can instantly turn into a violent suspect resisting arrest. So I would hope people would get some perspective from that and realize why police officers sometimes need to be aggressive with restraining tactics. Ease up for a split second and all hell breaks loose.

I haven't - but if what I'm seeing is true, that he grabbed a tazer and let it rip - all bets are off at that point.

I don't expect a cop to reach for his gun because somebody is physically resisting - that's a job for the hickory shampoo or Rin Tin Tin. I do expect him to reach for a gun anytime that person grabs a beer bottle, knife, tazer, or gun. Because that's what I've done.

I am not on Team Cop. Not everything they do is needed, or right. I don't expect them to go up some complicated escalating protocol whenever faced with a weapon.

I would, however, like them to knock it off with shooting a dog when they're on other side of a fence from it.

You know the frustrating part of all this is that if BLM and all their supporters --- or just everyone really --- would simply have a conversation like this with police officers and review situations like this to understand what was happening and why actions were taken, almost everyone would probably come away with a better understanding and appreciation for police work.

Some people still may not agree with the tactics or the decisions, but hopefully they could at least see the situation from a different perspective.

I think they had something like that in the movie Men in Black? Only it was not a video game, but they were going through some real setup and had popup people where they had to determine whether innocent or "alien".

In addition to discussions with police, seeing this FAS training police officers have to do and seeing just how difficult their job is would probably go a long way to opening people's eyes about this stuff.

Yesterday a cop called the division and said he was arresting a homeless man who entered a day care center - which was empty and unlocked - for "Burglary."

They're the loudest end of the continuum, but you also have the other end of the continuum, which never saw a LEO use of force they didn't like and really do believe that "whatever you have to do to go home safe at night" is divine writ. There's an almost tribal aspect to it. There's a hell of a lot of room for reform, and a lot of shit that needs to be scaled back. But you say that to some people and it's "well why don't you just call BLM when someone's breaking into your house!" And then BLM does what it does and people who might have been amenable to looking at some of the hard issues retrench. And so it goes.

289 A statue of India's famous pacifist, Mohandas Gandhi, is the latest target in the push to remove statues from the public square that have been deemed offensive.

More than 6,000 people have signed a petition calling for the removal of a Gandhi statue in the British city of Leicester, arguing that the leader of the Indian movement for independence from the British Empire was a "fascist racist and sexual predator," according to Breitbart News.

"For years he has been idolised and taught in school curriculum. For a lot of people in my community, he has bought inconsolable suffering against my people. As a result, I do not wish to see a statue and praise of that kind of character," the petition's author wrote to the Leicester City Council.

A British lawmaker who commissioned the statue expressed dismay at the calls to remove the statue on Twitter.

"When I commissioned Gandhi statue 5-years ago, never thought I'd see this," Sajid Javid posted. "'Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love.'"

Yep. Seen similar, and worse, with my own eyes. Growing up poor white, and moving to upper middle throughout my life - I've seen something that, honestly, a lot of folks here I don't think understand.

Police really have treated poor people differently from suburbia for decades. And it's not just because the cops are amped, or in a sketchy situation. Sometimes, it's because they just knew they could get away with it - because screwing with somebody poor didn't have the same consequences as screwing with somebody with financial means.

The same cop that's all "Have a nice day, citizen" in the 'burbs sometimes turns into the "Let's have some fun" cop in the trailer park or the 'hood.

So no one seems to be fighting the ideological battle for the values of America much beyond Trump, who is figthing the entire left, and the leftist culture it marinates in."

Conservatism, Inc., surrendered to the Left long ago. Its members sized up the opposition and decided to grift rather than govern and offer honest assessments as pundits; they live in left-wing shitholes like D.C. and view everything through that lens.

Trump actually has opposed the destruction of the United States, and that infuriates the Left and makes the cucks nervous. If he loses in November, the country will be done and we will need to turn our attention to local and state governments and work toward legal physical partition. I hope that doesn't happen but we have to be realistic that it might. We already are a semi-totalitarian, one-party state because "our" leaders are feckless cowards and it will get worse if not reversed now.

The Left has made rioting into black privilege, an expected response to any perceived offense. It's not even considered a minor offense by them. From what we know, the shooting in Atlanta may have been justified and the firing of the officers probably unlawful to the extent we have law any longer. We will wait until the evidence is presented. The Left will destroy neighborhoods and livelihoods and move to destroy the next city for anything else that offends them.

75%+ of the DWI's here in rural NE Texas are done by illegals.

It's why our uninsured motorist coverage is so high. They get 3 or more of them and they spend 6 months in lock up and get deported. They are usually back within 2-3 weeks after that doing it all over again.

Had one guy in Sherman TX with 9 DWI's that finally killed somebody a few years back. He did his 2 years in State lock up and got deported. He was back driving drunk in less than a month.

Posted by: Ramblin' Man at June 14, 2020 09:06 AM

My stance is enough with the broad brush generalizations.

I have had numerous very bad experiences with Christians throughout my life.

Does that mean I am free to go around saying that Christians are bad and there is a systemic problem with Christians that must be changed, just because of my own experience?

No.

Same applies to police officers, or Trump supporters, or any other group of people.

The actions of a few, or the experiences of me, do not represent the behavior of the collective.

On the day George Floyd was killed, that was one incident in one city in one state of the country. There are 19,495 cities, towns and villages in the USA.

Taking a low estimate of 1 police incident per day in each city over the course of a year, that's 7,115,675 incidents per year.

I think I saw the the stat that 9 unarmed suspects were killed by police last year.

9 out of 7,115,675 is a rate of 0.00013%.

Now, I understand this does not take into account brutality or harassment.

But the point is that smearing the hundreds of thousands of police officers across the entire country based on the tiny fraction that are legitimately bad is not going to convince anyone to listen to one's grievances.

I know I scroll on by now whenever I see CBD, Misanthropic Humanitarian and krakatoa go on one of their police = bad rants. I know they have valid reasons for their attitudes about police based on their experiences and that I'm never going to convince them to not broad brush everyone. But, I also know I am never going to read anything they say about police going forward, because of their bias.

So, is there or is there not a need to look at changing American Policing - in your opinion ? Because you complain about painting with a broad brush - but what I'm reading is that you're pretty close to just painting with a broad brush that American Policing is so close to perfect that we might as well call it perfect.

And you skip anything critical of the police, because they'll never change their minds. Yet, by skipping it, you'll never change your mind. Which also sounds like the very bias you're complaining about.

You tell me. Show me the data saying there is a systemic problem with police officers in every city, town and village in America and I will be on board with reform of "American policing".

So far, no one who rants about police needing reform has shared any of this data. They share their own experiences and extrapolate that to the entire American police force.

The kind of interactions we're talking about don't get jotted down as "data". And you've been told of plenty, here, by folks that I don't think are lying.

Either you think the stories are made up - or simply don't matter.

So - even though you bemoan in 278 that everyone's minds are closed and nobody wants a "discussion" - your mind is just as made up. We're liars, or our stories simply don't matter. There is no indication that policing needs any kind of reform. Got it. Cool.

Why waste any more words on the subject ? You don't want a "discussion" either. You just have a very clear idea of how you want the matter resolved.

Slick way to go about it though. The "reasonable" approach to steering the direction of the thread toward a desired outcome. Well done.

And this is exactly why I stated I have stopped reading people's anti-police rants here and stopped trying to convince people to refrain from broad-brushing groups.

I already stated that I understand why people have a bias against police based on their experiences. I myself have a bias against Christians based on my bad experiences.

But if you don't understand the idea of not broad brushing groups of people based on one's own experiences, there's nothing more I can say.

Have a good day, Ramblin' Man. With respect, sir. I am sincere in that. I understand we do not agree on this issue, but I don't say this with ill will. I think we're simply talking past each other at this point and it's not doing either of us any good.

Posted by: Ramblin' Man at June 14, 2020 10:32 AM (sFofr)

318 Here is THE systemic problem that police have: perspective distortion.

Because the police deal with crime on an up close and personal basis, police see people as perps, victims, or outside spectators. The "spectators" become invisible noise - except when they interfere with police activity. Those "spectators" are the ones to be given the "move along, nothing to see here" treatment. As I said this is perspective distortion: the vast majority of people, the vast majority of time, have NOTHING to do with crime - they aren't perps, victims, or witnesses, they are simply people living their lives.

This perspective distortion is amplified by the fact that police tend to socialize only with other police - who have the same perspective distortion they do.

When people who have nothing to do with crime do interact with the police, the police subconsciously place them somewhere in the spectrum of people they do deal with: perp, victim, spectator. Thus the police officer tries to determine where in the spectrum this person lies, and the person is treated suspiciously by the officer.

When there is nothing to suspect - since person knows he has nothing to do with crime - they find this monumentally offensive, particularly since the police project a condescending, superior, attitude toward perps, victims, and spectators. If this interacting citizen is black they see this attitude as racism, failing to note that whites are given exactly the same unwarranted suspicion by the police with whom they interact.

The police, of course, pick up on the irritation of an innocent person, as "perp" behavior, and it is easy to see how this interaction is rapidly going down hill.
