A Guy Predicted That Society Would Devolve Into Violence and Chaos in 2020

I got this from Tim Pool.

This is from 2012.

I don't know what "cliodynamic" means. I assume it's a variety of psychohistory, charting great trends that come in cycles.

VICE: Can you humor me and explain your cliodynamic theory of violence in layman's terms?

Peter Turchin: Sure. Historical studies show that society goes through long-term cycles of violence: There's a build-up for roughly a century, then a period of violence, or upheaval, for ten or 15 years. Then people get tired of it and the next generation goes back to being peaceful. It's then the grandchildren of that generation--who never experienced the severity of upheaval firsthand--who are likely to start causing problems again. My theory suggests that it will be 2020 when the US hits a new peak of violence.

Um, rather nailed that, huh?

[VICE:] In your view, what causes these upheavals?

Historically, the trouble has always come from people with power, and the number of those people who want the most power. There are too many political entrepreneurs who are all trying to get power, and they get frustrated, which is how revolutions start: when members of the elite try to overturn the political order to better suit themselves.

Years ago I would have said that sounds like commie bullshit but of course I know different now.

Andrew Stuttaford just wrote about this.*

In the course of an article I wrote for National Review back in 2016 on the political impact of automation, I mentioned the work of University of Connecticut's Peter Turchin, a pioneer of cliodynamics, a heavily data-based area of study that uses the detection of patterns to decipher the past and, from that, 'predict' the future (in 2012, Turchin related how one line of analysis suggested that "the next instability peak should occur in the United States around 2020").

Yup, psychohistory. Nailed it.

Whether one agrees with Turchin's math or the shadow of historical determinism that wafts through it, much of what he has to say also makes, intuitively, a great deal of sense.

Specifically, Turchin has warned that "elite overproduction" can be a precursor of turmoil to come. To oversimplify, this occurs when members of the elite (or those with the talents to join it) become too numerous for society to accommodate their aspirations.

...

Well over a third of 25- to 32-year-olds in the U.S. have a bachelor's degree (or above), up from one-eighth in 1965 (and there will undoubtedly have been a dramatic increase in the number of university graduates in almost every Western country).... University graduates earn more and are considerably less likely to be unemployed than those who could only manage high school. Nevertheless, the growth in the number of graduates has not been matched by the number of jobs that require degrees. This sets those who earned them up for a disappointment that won't have been made any easier by the fact that, far too often, their degrees will have been of limited value in the first place. Increasing the quantity of degrees is one thing, preserving their quality quite another. In 2012, the New York Fed reported that "during the first decade of the 2000s, many college graduates were forced to move down the occupational hierarchy to take jobs typically performed by lower-skilled workers." Unemployment may not yet be a problem for them, but underemployment is.

...

These "elites" -- um, would-be elites, let's say -- are upset that people who didn't spend $300,000 on a worthless college degree are making more than they are.

The increase in the pay for (some) non-graduate jobs is another reminder of how wage rates in some of the traditional haunts of the intelligentsia, whether it be in universities or the media, have declined in relative -- and not infrequently -- absolute terms. Thirty or 40 years ago, a successful journalist or academic was guaranteed access to the lifestyle of the comfortable middle class. For many reasons, that is no longer the case. This shift helps explain both the radicalization of academia and, as has been all too evident in recent weeks, that of the media. No longer, as they see it, having a vested interest in the existing system, they are agitating to replace it with one in which they will have the power and the spoils that go with it. The same will also apply to those millions of underemployed graduates. To understand why academics are teaching what they are, why journalists were writing and broadcasting what they are, and why so many younger people are ready to listen to them, this is not a bad place to start.

I don't know if it's true that the academy has seen wages fall. I'm quite sure that's not true, unless there's a caste system in the academy in which most workers are kept from full-time positions and are paid menial wages while a select few (incluing all the administrators, of course) make hundreds of thousands per year.

* Strangely, I just blundered across the Andrew Stuttaford article without searching for it. I was checking National Review for the first time in months to see if they were actually engaging with the current crisis, or avoiding it like cowards. (Answer: They're engaging but in as cautious and bloodless a way as possible.)

So I just came across a random Peter Turchin mention minutes after hearing of him for the first time. The Baader-Meinhof phenomenon strikes again.

Racial upheaval is easy to predict since it's a constant and easily instigated, but Trump is a bizarre left-field event.

His presence has led the Left to this reckless position, and I don't think that would be predictable. I suspect the guy got lucky in hindsight.

25 I dunno. We've been fighting a "cycle of violence" since the late 90's. It's called Islamic Terrorism and their goal is to essentially overturn the status quo. Some of us didn't miss that for obvious reasons.

What's happening in our country now is more of an insurgency. It also is being stoked by foreign actors because they know to divide us is to defeat us. Ergo it's a pretty classic insurgency- it's just on our shores now and nobody's driving around in technical with an DShK.

83 this occurs when members of the elite (or those with the talents to join it) become too numerous for society to accommodate their aspirations.

92 Yeah, anyone with two brain cells to rub together can see that all the systems of Marxism are nothing more than one group killing off the current leaders, killing a few million innocents along the way and setting themselves up as the new leaders.

It's greed.

And everyone knows it.
But they all go along with the lie because they think they're going to get a chair at the table.
And not a bullet in front of a wall.

It amuses me darkly.

They're not industrious or clever enough to win now but they think the new, more ruthless system is going to let them win?

The Wall Street banker you think is gonna finally get what's coming to him in your new Democrat socialism is going to change jobs to Commisar of Finance.
And not only is he going to deny your loan, he's going to fine you $500 for not donating to BLM last month.

101 What Antifa members don't know: The absolute worst thing that could happen to the members of Antifa would be for them to win and establish a Communist dictatorship of the proletariat here in the United States. Why? Because the very first group of people to be lined up against the wall and shot, are the people who were the revolutionaries. Why? Because they were the effective trouble makers, and the new leaders don't want those kind of people around to give them trouble in the future.

Of course the second group against the wall are the college profs who trained those trouble makers. Not only might they train more trouble makers, but the last people any real Communist wants around them are anyone who makes them feel stupid.
They'll all die before people like us do.

I'm quite sure that's not true, unless there's a caste system in the academy in which most workers are kept from full-time positions and are paid menial wages while a select few (incluing all the administrators, of course) make hundreds of thousands per year."

It's true in small part. A certain gender and certain race(s) increasingly find themselves adjunct professors and administrators, more or less at-will employees. Those who get the tenure ring, of course, are incredibly high paid (see, Elizabeth Warren), compensated considerably more than in the past. Stuttaford, about the only NT I can stomach, usually is more precise.

116 The disaffection of masses of 20 to 40 somethings IS probably fueled by butt-hurt over the failure of their expectations.

In 1980, fewer than 20% of the population had a four-year degree. You could get a degree in underwater basket weaving, and you would still be part of a fairly elite group.

Now, more than a third of the population has a four-year degree - considerably higher than that if you are under 40.

And degrees have gotten a lot more expensive, thanks to Federally guaranteed student loans.

So, many young people go deeply into debt to get a degree that they think will make them part of the societal elite, and the degree frequently turns out to be worthless.

118 This is ironic;

This sets those who earned them up for a disappointment that won't have been made any easier by the fact that, far too often, their degrees will have been of limited value in the first place. Increasing the quantity of degrees is one thing, preserving their quality quite another. In 2012, the New York Fed reported that "during the first decade of the 2000s, many college graduates were forced to move down the occupational hierarchy to take jobs typically performed by lower-skilled workers." Unemployment may not yet be a problem for them, but underemployment is."

I was at the post office at lunch, talking to a postal clerk I've gotten to know, and found out for the first time that he actually had a degree in Geology from a major school. And the most ironic thing of all is that, in having a job as a postal clerk, he's done better by far than most other geology degree holders have.

Sure, that was true when only the very top of the class went to college, and when many college degrees had a practical use. But college wasn't making those people significantly smarter. They would have earned more money with our without the degree.

But all we took from it was, "Better send my kid to college or he'll be poor all his life. What's he going to study? Hell, I don't know. He's kind of a dullard, so hopefully he'll stick to something simple, like journalism."

That whole "you earn more with a college degree" thing has been screwing up this country for years.

So, violence is kind of like the tides.

The tides come and go, sometimes even causing havoc.

Anyone who lives on or visits an ocean, knows the ocean always wins, eventually.

Are people sentient beings with the ability to control their own destiny, or controlled by the orbit of the moon? If it is the latter, I have sure wasted a lot of time in church.

I tend to believe the real fact that history is mis-taught and the facts mangled. Public schools don't teach the miracle of how the Constitution was created, and the circumstances that existed when that happened.

Instead, it is now being taught that America was just a vessel for slavery and to put down people of color for 4 centuries. Nothing else really happened, the white man is rich off of the backs of the poor people of color, just like it's always been. Incredible improvements to add to the quality of life for all are ignored, in fact, denied.

It's easy to control someone when they have no idea of the truth or their own history.

2. Publish their names.
3. Seize all grain from them.
4. Designate hostages - in accordance with yesterday's telegram.

Do it in such a fashion, that for hundreds of verst around the people see, tremble, know, shout: "strangling (is done) and will continue for the bloodsucking kulaks".

Telegraph the receipt and the implementation.

You then create useless departments within colleges, such as the "humanities" and "women's studies" etc., to make sure you get the maximum number of idiots the ability to actually obtain a degree (thereby maximizing the amount of federal aid flowing to colleges).
Sounded like a good plan, but they didn't count on those idiots with their useless degrees finding out that being a college graduate doesn't make life easy street -- at least not when you have a useless degree.
Now the idiots are mad. But they can't take personal responsibility - they blame capitalism and "systemic racism." Anything to avoid admitting they were duped.

This is today's public service announcement,

If you live in a different state than your friend in Ark, no can do on sales or even gimmes across state lines between individuals without involving ffl transfer. It is a felony. They can't buy it for you either as that is the definition of a strawbuyer.

Violates federal law (and perhaps your state laws as well).

So, if you want to acquire a firearm, do it legally. Read the ATF faq's on the matter.

While watching the Intellectuals dig their own graves is amusing at first, their lack of prowess with the shovel renders them highly inefficient.

The latter doesn't make them dig any faster, but sometimes you have to smell the roses.

282 There is a trend in academia to hire low-level grads to do almost all of the teaching. They hire them as part-timers so as not to provide benefits.
So people with masters degrees and beyond are being paid peanuts to do all the work.. Who do they blame?
NOT the institutions.. NOT the highly paid professors for whom they do all the grunt work..
They blame you and me for not wanting to cough up more tax dollars to pay for their stupid asses who will not stand up for themselves in the workplace.
This is very much like the argument I have with my daughter's musician friends.. who complain they are asked by club owners to guarantee a certain draw and who do not get paid (or paid very little), but are offered "exposure" and ability to sell CD's.
When I tell them, "that's stupid. I never worked a gig for free in my life except for charity events" when I did gigs back in the 80's.. they respond.. well "you have to do that.. it's the system!"
I laugh.. right in their faces.

If this were in the context of trading and markets, it would carry the disclaimer, "past results do not guarantee future performance."

312 The problem with this and the Fourth Turning idea is it is retrospective, even when it promises to be prospective. If they miss the prediction by a few years, it is, "See, it came a little early/late."
If this were in the context of trading and markets, it would carry the disclaimer, "past results do not guarantee future performance."

I think the 4th turning laid out a pretty good rationale for explaining things, but yes, it is all much too vague for concrete predictions. It does provide an explanation for why certain things keep coming around, like the Puritans following the very licentiousness Elizabethan period after a few years, much like the ultra-prudish SJW's rising after the hedonism of the 60's, 70's, and 80's.

So no, they won't be touched. Crime will skyrocket and they won't
be affected, because the criminals will know the game. Don't hit a
protected target.

Everyone else? Fair game due to original racist sin.

Put the sign in the window, or else. Signal why you shouldn't be

Nuisance crimes, neighbor against neighbor will escalate. And who will you call when the gang-bangers tear up your hood? Will driveby shootings go unreported?

Yes, they do now. Shootings in general often go unreported, which is why technology like Shotspotter exists. They won't rat out the other gang because that would implicate their own. So they plot revenge. Unlucky people are caught in the middle, but they've always been, and Chicago is a good sign of exactly how much the left cares.

They may think this plan will terrorize whitey, but in actuality daily life in the hond will become unspeakably painful.

My point is that it already is, and they don't care. Now just imagine a few thousand weaponized social workers (read: commissars) who want nothing more than to take your kids, and a few dozen heavily armed "neighborhood patrols" (protection rackets).

373 HERE IS HOW REAGAN AND TRUMP ARE SIMILAR IN THE MOST IMPORTANT AEGIS OF ALL:

THEY ARE PART OF A DIALECTIC OF AMERICAN HISTORY . EVERY GENERATION OR TWO HAS EXPERIENCED A POPULIST UPRISING WHICH IS ANTI-ELITE, ANTI-STATUS QUO AND THE CENTRALITY OF THE ARGUMENT IS ANTI-CORRUPTION.

IT STARTS WITH THOMAS JEFFERSON IN 1800. JEFFERSON SAID HE REGARDED HIS ELECTION AS THE SECOND REVOLUTION SO HE REVERSES ADAM'S PROGRAMS LIKE THE SEDITION ACT AND CUT TAXES AND CUT THE BURACRACY AND THEN OF COURSE, HE'S FOLLOWED BY JACKSON.

WE'VE ALL GOTTEN A REFRESHER COURSE IN ANDREW JACKSON WITH THE ELECTION OF TRUMP AND WHAT HE MEANS TO AMERICAN POPULISM AND THE BANK OF AMERICA.

Monica Crowley: AND THE ANTI-CORRUPTION MESSAGE "DRAIN THE SWAMP".

Craig Shirley: YES, AND HE WAS ALSO WAS VICTIMIZED BY THE [#FAKENEWS] MEDIA OF THE TIME, WHO WOULD WRITE THE MOST TERRIBLE AND AWFUL PAMPHLETS AND THEY WERE DISSEMINATED WIDELY ATTACKING ANDREW JACKSON, AND THEN OF COURSE, ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ANTI-STATUS QUO. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WAS REVOLUTIONARY, ANTI-SLAVERY BY 1860, THAT CONTINUES THAT TRADITIONAL CONSERVATIVE AMERICAN FREMONT PHILOSOPHY OF THE MAXIMUM FREEDOM FOR ALL INDIVUIDUALS.

SO THEN OF COURSE, TEDDY ROOSEVELT RUNNING AGAINST THE CORRUPT TRUSTS, AND FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT IN MANY WAYS IS A POPULIST REFORMER RUNNING AGAINST CORRUPT WALL STREET. AND THEN REAGAN, THEN TRUMP COMES 2O-SOME YEARS LATER. SO THAT'S THE DIALECTIC TO AMERICAN HISTORY.

I AM MAD AT MYSELF FOR THINKING HILLARY WOULD WIN BUT I FAILED MYSELF AS A STUDENT OF HISTORY TO REALIZE THAT THE TRUMP ELECTION WAS NOT FORETOLD OR INEVITABLE, BUT HE HAD A MUCH BETTER CHANCE THAN WE REALIZED, IF ONLY BECAUSE HE FOLLWED THE TRACK OF AMERICAN HISTORY."--Historian Craig Shirley, C-SPAN

The people who want to abolish/defund the police also want open borders, defund/empty prisons, legalize drugs, etc.

406 "Clio" was the Muse of history in Greek mythology.

There's a novel, In the Country of the Blind by Michael F. Flynn, that imagines that there is a science similar to psychohistory; it's called "cliology". I didn't actually like the book that much, but I loved the ideas and the backstory. The book imagines a secret society that has cliology and is trying to steer the world to avoid mass disasters; but science is there for anyone to discover, and it turns out there is a second secret society that also has cliology and they are trying to steer the world in the direction they want (and they are not as nice as the the first society). And in fact there is a third secret society with cliology, but they aren't trying to steer anything, they are just making hugely profitable investments in the stock market because they have a better idea than other investors what is coming.

One of the most memorable parts in the book for me was in the 1800's some people looking at a graph they had plotted and seeing World War II in the graph and wondering just what could cause such upheaval. Somehow their equations predicted the atomic bomb (they didn't know what it would be, just that around the mid- 1940's an "ultimate weapon" would be developed).

419 Gonna kinda meh on a lot of this.

Tibor Scitovsky, economist, had an economic-centric similar argument in The Joyless Economy, which was a thing in the late 70s. Didn't really work out like that, at all. Too few jobs for too many people of certain castes, that is.

And most of journalism was hardly well-paying 40 years ago, and neither was academia, overall. It was in the 70s where academia started its explosion in terms of compensation. Grew up around some pre-1990s academics, and spent some limited time with some much more recently (they're long retired) - they cannot believe the pay/benefits today. As important, they cannot believe the substantive collapse and politicization.

426 Please don't fall for this bull shit. It's an old game. Metahistorians (and metahistory is what this is) ALWAYS, when looked at closely, turn out to be cherry-picking, or as they say, "lumping". They tie disparate phenomena up into what look like tidy bundles. Then, later, others do commit the crime of looking closely*.

And what you will find is that they are looking for evidence to support their thesis, but not for counter-evidence. See J H Hexter's "The Historical Method of Christopher Hill" for a good illustration. And note, Hexter was an early advocate of data-analysis in history, gong back to the 50s, long before "cliodynamics" was a gleam in Turchin's eye.

I did look at him in the earlier NRO article, before the 2016 one. (Can't look at that because it's paywalled.) And yes, it was the usual shell game. Note that, for America, 2020 is not a century, also that a century is really too long for the explanatory model; 3 generations would be more like 75 years, at most.

He just got lucky.

Please, please, please do not fall for every plausible huckster who seems to support your preconceived ideas.

*One paradigm is C S Lewis's "The New Learning and the New Ignorance." Much Hexter's work is built around that.

429 Some of us 29 somethings remember when going to college wasn't
something everybody did. And, quite often, we worked our way
through paying semester by semester. If that meant we had to go to a
community college or local state college, that's what happened. And, we
only went if we needed a piece of paper for a particular vocation.

Too
many kids go to college having zero idea what they want to do. Of
course, making matters worse are courses that have nothing to do with
reality, unless your reality is going to be "lifetime student", which
all too many are. So, they're paying off a useless degree throughout
their 20's and even 30's, and have a job that's got nothing to do with
what they went to college for?

Gee, who's
to blame for that? I certainly do hope that this whole college via zoom
during the plandemic has guaranteed the fall of these institutions.
Sadly, it's the ones that really need to go that will stay afloat. But
maybe, just maybe there will be an increase in trade schools teaching
actual vocations.

455 the baader were university students triggered by the student unrest in germany, whch was provoked largely by the shooting by a stasi infiltrator in the police, they struck a number of prominent targets, like banker jurgen ponto, but they hit the jackpot with hans schleyer, a director of bmw who had been in the waffen ss, 30 years before, that was their antifascist twist, they were also trained in east germany, not long after that, there was the luftansa flight to entebbe, where they paired up the pflp, who were largely kgb conttolled that ended with the raid on entebbe that claimed bib's brother

similarly you have the brigatte who were rrom regio emilia
the hardest hit area of the wuflu, major industrial and agricultural hub, they were trained in czechoslovakia, their cause celebre was an bombing in Piazza Fontana in 1969, it turns out it was a neonazi outfit responsible, they were also student radical,s their biggest hit was the kidnap and murder of aldo moro, who was the prime minister who wanted to bring the communists into government, they weren't terribly logical

457 Can't tell if that academic caste system comment is made in jest.

Because that is EXACTLY what exists in academia, with graduate students being at the very bottom tier, then professors who will never reach tenure. Dozens of graduate students/teaching assistants working for very little pay and competing for a tiny number of job openings.

Khan Academy is one of many great sources.

I predict that with this school year of Zooming, a lot of parents are going to look hard at paying another few years of insane tuition costs and balk at it.

I am going to enjoy the upcoming collapse of higher education with glee. Many who work there have been a root cause of this chaotic nonsense. Hope they get it good and hard.

They had one job, to teach the truth, and instead didn't.

468 I have a useless BA degree. In the 90s I was told you have to have a degree, any degree, to succeed.

I never had a job that paid 21,000 dollars a year or more. I am 165,000 dollars in debt. And I haven't been able to find any job since 2013. There are millions like this.

Now what keeps me from rioting? My Christian values. Like it or not, if you don't have Judeo Christian values, if you aren't raised with them (and ho boy, look at how blacks are raised by the government) or if you think you're too good for them, too smart, you into slaves of passion. Of rage,

470 I saw a YouTube video that made the case that Antifa et. al. don't really care about the riots right now; these riots were intended as a "dress rehearsal" for the real riots they are planning for this fall.

I won't link the video because I'm not sure he proved his case and it's long and meandering. But I think it's a good idea to assume that as soon as Trump crushes Biden in the election, massive riots will "spontaneously" break out in big Democrat cities. Especially if Biden wins the popular vote thanks to massive election fraud in places like California.

Basically the idea is that Antifa doesn't care what the results of the riots are now, they were just getting practice now and seeing what works. This fall the "riots" will actually be the opening battle in an undeclared armed insurrection to finally overthrow the government and install a paradise on Earth, i.e. a Socialist government with an iron grip. If this theory is correct, the current riots were just Antifa doing minimum effort but after Trump wins they will go 100%.

While we are having depressing thoughts, Scott Adams is predicting a second wave of riots. Because George Floyd had drugs in his system (fentanyl and meth), and it's almost certain that the drugs were a major contributing factor in his death, it's unlikely that the officer who kneeled on George Floyd's neck will be ruled guilty of manslaughter, and impossible that he will be ruled guilty of premeditated murder. The left is demanding that this officer be charged with premeditated murder; if this happens it is certain he will be ruled Not Guilty, and that's when we will get more riots.

475 I disagree with the premise that the gender-studies grads are getting replaced by H1-B visa employees. Nobody *needs* gender-studies grads. Foreign gender-studies grads are not getting H1-B visas.

Vote for me for Supreme Overlord! I will abolish the current student loan program for $anything, and instead institute a national competition for a select number of careers that are actually needed in the country. Earn a degree in that major (hint: they will tend to be things like actual science, engineering, medical technology) or no loan for you. Similar program for *useful* trade schools like plumbing, electrical work, etc. Applications can be made to add a major/trade if it can be proven to a) have open, paying job reqs. and b) contribute $x to the economy. Furthermore, for those majors that don't contribute anything, institutions of higher learning will be required to provide actual data about hiring percentages and average income every year, and the student will be required to sign with a witness to continue in that major.

Furthermore, I will torment Congress until it passes a law that permits testing for jobs again, which is what got us in this stupid "any college degree is a golden ticket" cargo cult. If companies are allowed to test applicants they won't require a college diploma to prove the applicant can come in out of the rain 2 out of 3 times. /end rant/

If they want that, they better work toward proving that:
A) Floyd's and Chauvin's pre-existing relationship was the reason Chauvin killed him and

B) That Chauvin had ordered someone (his fellow officer and brother in law for instance), to hold Floyd until he got there so that he could make him disappear.

Thing is, the scenario above is not out of the realm of possibility. Floyd apparently did not start passively resisting until Chauvin showed up and the arresting officer (who I think was Chauvin's brother in law) tried to get him into Chauvin's car. But you have to prove it.

482 I don't know if it's true that the academy has seen wages fall. I'm quite sure that's not true unless there's a caste system in the academy in which most workers are kept from full-time positions and are paid menial wages while a select few (including all the administrators, of course) make hundreds of thousands per year.

This is precisely the case. If you're a tenured full professor, you're set (for now). But increasing numbers of courses are taught by adjuncts, part-time serfs. Add to that fact that overproduction of PhDs in the non-STEM colleges has produced a feeding frenzy for the few entry tenure track openings available.
