78 I find these Dutch 'every day life' paintings to be fascinating. First, the sheer artistic talent needed to use light, detail and perspective so convincingly is powerful. I could spend hours noting the details of each object. Second, they reveal so much about the culture and customs of the country: what is included, the pets in the household, the arrangement of the rooms and their contents. Finally, the artist's choices of colors to best represent the objects.

Looking at other van Hoogstraten paintings, the man seems to have a sense of humor such as the face of the man, seated in the second room, who is seen from the back in the main painting.

Thanks, CBD, for including today's work.

Here's a First World problem: I can't park my car in the shade under the trees in front of my door, because birds. (Twice this month I've walked out to see my car looking as if it had been decorated like a wedding cake, only, ewwww.) So I have to park in the NE lot, which has no shade at all until close to sundown -- which is not until 8 pm nowadays. Yes, I put up sunshades and the windows are tinted, but it gets HOT in a car. It makes me reluctant to go anywhere after about 9 in the morning.

Fortunately I'm on walkabout at home. But it's still annoying.

My company's CEO sent out an email that had a generic reference to not tolerating racism in the middle of a paragraph talking about the disruption to the business over the past few months.

I'm actually kind of surprised at how restrained the messaging has been considering that the place does celebrate gay pride month now.

Knowing nothing of the artist or his thoughts about why he created this, I'd presume this is intentional. He's TRYING to convey something being wrong.

Not sure what. Maybe the clues are found in symbolic messages that I don't have the tools to decode.

It requires a small air compressor, receiver, and a vortex tube.

You hit a button and cold compressed air pushes out the hot air before you get in. Any car with air suspension already has the compressor and possible a receiver. Vortex tubes are tiny and small solenoid valves are easy to get.

Only issue I see is that it might be a little noisy.

Yeah, of course. But a list of approved words and the kneeling procedure must be written and has been sent to the "in-crowd." Pelosi, Swalwell, DeBlasio, Fredo, and their Fellow Travelers need to know what to say and do.

248 My company sent this out today:

Our Message of Inclusivity, Hope, and Action

The recent events surrounding the death of George Floyd and so many that have come before him, are a heart-breaking tragedy that has deeply impacted each of us in a personal way. The pain, anger, and sorrow that echo across the globe remind us that we are not yet where we need to be as a nation and as a people - that racial and social injustice are real, divisive, and intolerable. This is not someone else's fight; inclusion and diversity belong to each of us, and we must remain committed in realizing our shared vision of freedom, equality, and justice for all.

As a company and as a nation, we draw strength from our diversity; we achieve our greatest success through our inclusion; and we influence and change the future through our innovation where inclusion and diversity intersect.

We remain steadfast in our belief that each individual has the indelible right to be treated equally, to have a sense of belonging, and to have the opportunity to bring their best self forward. We have always worked toward creating conditions that promote inclusion on a daily basis and we are profoundly moved at the fierce compassion, desire, and drive for change that so many of you have already shown through your words and actions. Each of us has the power and capacity for change and we will continue to learn, share, and transform - building a future where all are treated fairly and with the dignity and respect that each of us deserves. To do anything less is to hold ourselves back from realizing our true capacity for human progress: achieving equality for all.

While our country may not be where it needs to be, we must not lose our sense of hope and purpose. At (company name), we will continue to uphold voices of diversity, to lift up the communities where we live and work, and to be the change we want to see. Now is the time to be bold; it is the time to unite. To look through the lens of possibility, to make the positive changes we need to move forward as a company, as a nation, and as a people. This is a topic of humanity, and people have always been at the heart of our mission.

We are here, we are listening, and we are acting. We welcome further dialogue and diversity of thought as we remain committed to our values and united by grace and respect to lift each other up and to be the voice and action of change.

We are all in this together, and together we are stronger.

Signed by our VP of Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Innovation. I wish I were making that title up.

277 One problem with trying to deal with the racial arguments of the Left is forgetting that they aren't racial arguments-- they're Marxist arguments, applying the same 'class struggle' bullshit to race.

Race is the vulnerability in a diverse* society like ours. Instead of class division (given that American culture is far less structured by class than most others), it becomes easier to factionalize between ethnicity/race.

Thanks CN you said this well.

So I've been really heartbroken about this. I really was born in Philly and I do love my city and I lived there thru college and for fifteen years afterward, and only moved b/c I couldn't get my eldest into a charter school, honestly.

pretty much everyone I work with (office in the city) lives in the city.

and now it's not my city anymore. it's gone. not so much bc of the rioting altho partly that, just because of your second thing. I'm not wanted there anymore.

so it finally has sunk in, and our stupid plans to move back when the eldest went to college are WAY WAY OVER WITH.

it's fine I feel better today but I had to go thru the stages of grief.

the people we know who live in town - even in the nabes (other than south philly of course! and probably the Far Northeast) are ALL IN on the "protesting" and I'm telling you it's just b/c they are SO SCARED. they cannot accept that they have no place in Philadelphia any longer and they think they can "pay the danegeld" and be allowed to stay. they are just doing little self-abnegating rituals to try to stay alive there, basically

I'm not mad at them anymore, just sad.

It's over. Philly is lost.

Marxism: Bourgeoisie vs. proletariat
Post-modern social constructionism: Oppressor vs. oppressed

This is why Marxism has largely failed, and post-modernism is ascendant (in the West, anyway). In the original Marxist dichotomy, there was a defined loser and a defined winner, a defined hero and a defined villain. But collectivism doesn't work, so any semblance of stability has to be destroyed to enable continuous revolution. Mao started to figure this out, but the PoMo's really figured it out.

The oppressor/oppressed dichotomy is *much* more useful because you can move the goalposts with ease. Once they eliminate the oppressors (white people writ large, and anyone else who is down with traditional American values, market economics, private ownership, etc.), there will suddenly be a group of new oppressors to be destroyed in the next turn of the revolutionary crank.

SJWism and every other offshoot of the postmodern clusterfuck is perfectly Marxist in terms of core philosophy, but it isn't economic - it's cultural. That is why it is so much more powerful. The economic dichotomy in Marxism is not flexible enough to do what they need. A constantly shifting cultural dichotomy is much more adaptable and useful to you if you're an evil collectivist.

2. The NYT decision to publish him isn't dangerous.

3. Outrage is based in part on a misunderstanding about our troops.

4. Soldiers are generally more-disciplined and more-restrained than cops.

381 Would you'll like to see what General Lengyel, the 4-star head of National Guars Bureau, sent out to all personnel? Of course you do!

To the Men and Women of the National Guard:

I am sickened by the death of George Floyd. I am horrified his 6 year old daughter will grow up without a father. And I am enraged that this story of George Floyd, of Philando Castile, of Trayvon Martin, and too many others keeps happening in our country, where unarmed men and women of color are the victims of police brutality and extrajudicial justice.

Our country has seen peaceful protests descend into unspeakable brutality at lunch counters in Montgomery and on bridges in Selma. Right now, anger and outrage are spilling out into the streets all across America. We all bear the scars of history, of oppressors and the oppressed. We cannot erase this legacy, but we can listen, we can learn, and we can be better. We must be better.

Everyone who wears the uniform of our country takes an oath to uphold the Constitution and everything for which it stands. If we are to fulfill our obligation as service members, as Americans, and as decent human beings, we have to take our oath seriously. We cannot tolerate racism, discrimination, or casual violence. We cannot abide divisiveness and hate. We cannot stand by and watch. We ask for the intercession of what Abraham Lincoln called "the better angels of our nature". Join me.

It doesn't specify, but I assume he then knelt in solidarity and self-flaggelated as penance for his inherited sins of slavery and racism.

This is correct.

and GET READY. they will try for the President, but they will go after a whole SWATH of people associated with the admin, if they can't get him, they will hit multiple targets.

I'm sure - hopefully! - that the admin knows this and is taking their own precautions, not trusting the IC to give them good info?!?!? I hope so anyway.

Front line recruiters are mostly there to make sure that the first pass of candidates can meet the basic requirements of the job description. Yeah, they don't know it specifically, but they can look for those buzzwords.

There's limited use in them, but if the person being interviewed understands the game, they can be played.

477 I had an idea for a device to quickly cool a hot car that I haven't had the time to experiment on.

Posted by: sniffybigtoe at June 04, 2020 10:06 AM (1ISKN)

I think you'd find it needs a lot of air. The air compressors used for air suspension are quite small.

You know what might work? Stored coolth. Fill a cylinder like a scuba tank to 2000 psi. Cool the air from the compressor as it goes into the tank, but also have the tank in a cold chest cooled by the A/C system. On a signal from your key fob, a valve opens, and chilled air from the tank expands, cooling even more, and displaces hot air from the car interior. And as you drive off, and engine-driven compressor recharges the tank.

You'd have to run all the numbers, the PV=nRT stuff, to see if it would work.

We glamorize the past, but if you wanna describe New Orleans as a seedy, corrupt hive of scum and villainy overrun with hustlers and the neaveau riche and the fake riche and the desperately poor and the addicts and criminals of all types, the worst of whom are the people running it - well, that's a pretty good description of New Orleans for every one of the last 200 years.

And when it was placed under Federal Occupation under Ben "Beast" Butler, things got even worse.

493 I guess the next question is what are they personally doing to help people of color? I would suggest that they donate at least 40 hours a week to doing work for black charities or the NAACP or some such nonsense. Maybe after dedicating THEIR LIVES to helping people of color, they might ease their feelings of guilt. Until they take action, I would point out that their words are meaningless, as is their apparent guilt.

Fen, there are several factors in play. A heart attack in itself often leads to depression and serious mood changes. Surgery anesthetic can also cause issues with brain chemicals. Medications can often cause these types of mental issues.

This needs to be addressed with his physicians. A possible change in meds and support counseling regarding the heart attack and his physical limitations would be the best place to start.

this line stood out to me as well. What a horrible thing to say to your men. Ever hear about the sins of the father?

I don't recall what the head of the National Guard Bureau does exactly. but it is less than most think even with that name. And since I was in the Guard, it shows he isn't really that big of a deal since I still don't know.

But damn, what a thing to send out to men who are deploying. Why do so many act as if there has been no progress since Fort Sumter? Why do things seem ten times as bad as they were in the 80s? No one will ever convince me the internet wasn't a key factor in all of this. Sure there were so many other factors like fewer people attending church, fewer nuclear families, the 24 hour news cycle etc. But it just makes no sense that in the last ten years race has become some huge deal that is commented on on a daily basis and blamed for everything.

People were so worried at the Millenium that something bad would happen. We were happy when it didn't occur. My argument is it did occur but we just didn't realize it at the time.

They only hold festivals in hot months. And the condition of the highways in this state is a horror -- driving anywhere for fun is almost impossible.

559 Ah, the French Revolution, the leftist revolution that led to the first modern genocide, constant war with neighbors, the Terror, and the eradication of the originators of the revolution.

The war-making wasn't all from the French side. The European monarchies abhorred the revolution's ideals and tried to strangle it in the crib.

560 Just saw a great post elsewhere. Summarizing here.

Remember when the NBA and the Houston Rockets and others in the media went completely silent while their ChiCom masters cracked down in Hong Kong? They were all "the opinion of this one employee who tweeted #standwithhongkong does not reflect the opinions of the NBA or the Houston Rockets."

Now what? Now they're climbing over each other to support a LESS pointed version of protests. Hong Kong folks were literally just trying to maintain their laws. They were organized and they had a message. CAN'T ALLOW THAT. Buncha aimless dumbass looters? WE SUPPORT THIS.

Just more Big Gov bullshit message management.

Wouldn't surprise me to find Chinese money behind the protesting groups.

567 Fen, there are several factors in play.

Posted by: Jen the original at June 04, 2020 10:56 AM (QR/xh)

As you surmise, medications can play a huge role in this kind of thing; in fact, people who have been relatively healthy and never had much hospital time are often most affected, because they have never built up any resistance to any drugs.

My father, who passed away last year at age 85, had an extended hospital stay about 3 years ago. He didn't have dementia, but something similar happened - we were with him when he was recovering after a procedure, and he was talking fine, seemed very coherent, but he kept looking out the window in his room, and getting noticably agitated whenver he did. We asked him "dad, what's wrong?" and he said "well it's those palm trees - see them? It's the gorillas that keep running up and down them, I can't believe they're letting them run free like that!"

There was nothing outside the window save for a parking lot full of cars. We worked out later that it was a bad combination of drugs, combined with one that they had written down wrong and were overdosing him on, that was messing with his mind so bad.

568 #555 Not heart surgery in my dad's case but an undiagnosed mild heart attack that had him in the ICU for three days and the heart department for another seven or eight. He's an engineer and was doing things like acting as if he was using a computer and asking me questions about his email he was just reading and the like. The EMT guys said it was common too.

What I noticed was the orgs who were silent on Hong Kong are quite vocal now in support. The orgs who supported Hong Kong are rightfully now saying looting and rioting are bad. There's a difference between organized protests against a specific law and just wild packs of lunatics.

581 Another amusing hospital bed story - we were with my dad, and now he had a TV in his room, and some drug commercial came in (seemed to be in poor taste for a hospital tv, but whatever) and he brightened up and said "Oh, you remember that company? (talking to my mom) That's the one where we drove down to tour the plant, and they wanted me to buy it, and we almost did, but then they asked for all these ridiculous terms and tried to get us to sign that contract we just couldn't agree to...."

And my mom said "um, honey, all of that happened while you were laying in this hospital bed right here." And he said "really?" and you could tell he still kind of believed it was real even though, logically, he knew it couldn't be.

I don't think Floyd was at home living with the kid and her ma. He was already effectively dead to her.

You know what really killed George Floyd? The thug life did that. Live as a thug, die as a thug. In this case, the thug that whacked him him happened to also be a cop. Just a fluke.

My friend, Dave, the retired pastor, who had a heart attack and a pacemaker installed is now having paranoia and believing irrational things such as his daughters have changed their names and want nothing to do with him. I think the "hospital dementia" is not an unusual thing for older folks (He's 75) or after a heart surgery in the hospital, but it's scary for his family Prayers for he and his family would be appreciated.

Has anyone here experienced this kind of thing with their mom or dad after surgery?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 04, 2020 10:47 AM (+eVzC)

*************

Just after my dad had quadruple bypass surgery, when visiting him in the hospital he told me that the man in the bed opposite was an agent for the author Robert Ludlum (who I think was already dead by then) and was sent by Ludlum to steal stories of my dad's time in the Royal Navy to make into a novel.

Later when I told him what he said he refused point blank to believe it.

The doctors warned us of such delirium though, it's very common.

587 Don't be. We're winning. The stench of desperation from the left is becoming palpable.

We're winning bigly and we're cutting off their funding. The Wall, pulling out of the Middle East, etc. deprives them of the foreign aid, illegal drugs, arms, and human trafficking sales that they rely on.

Donald Trump is killing them. There is no other reason for these ops and expending so much ammunition. Were Jeb Bush in office, they could just lay low and wait a few years.

588 #576 You're welcome. It lasted months BTW but I think he's okay now on that score at his retirement home (where they've had no Wuhan deaths at all). He was otherwise fine -- his mind was/is still sharp as a tack -- but some of the symptoms listed there would popup every now and then. He was on blood-thinner and beta-blockers for his heart then and now and hospital stays exacerbate it as I recall.
