The Long Promoted, Semi-Mythical "Snyder Cut" of the Justice League is Real, it Is Funded, and It Is Debuting in 2021

If you don't know the backstory:

Justice League is/was one of the biggest bombs in Hollywood history, hated by critics, equally scorned by fans, and losing a ton of money. How much money, Warner Bros. won't say. It's hard to know when the film cost a huge (but unspecified) amount of money just for reshoots.

Zack Snyder either left the production most of the way through due to the suicide of his daughter, or (as I suspect) was fired from the fim with the studio using the death of the daughter as cover story.

Male Feminist (and, ergo, Sex Pest) Joss Whedon was brought in to write stupid jokes for the movie and film those, and to direct the reshoots.

The reshoots were not just a scene here or there. The movie had very extensive reshoots to simplify the story and reduce the number of scenes in it, because Warner Bros. mandated that the movie must not be longer than two hours, and Justice League was shot to be something closer to three hours.

Zack Snyder's fans have always believed -- or hoped -- that Snyder's original film (which, note, was never actually completed) was actually good.

Hence, Snyder's fans have been urging Warner Bros to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut for, wow, probably like four years at this point.

And... Warner Bros has listened?

Now, as I said, the theatrical Justice League was cobbled together from some of Snyder's material and Wheedon's terrible reshoots. And any Synder material that was cut before final post-production would not have key special effects or sound effects or score.

So that means that any kind of "Snyder Cut" would have to have a lot of money put into it just to complete the footage they'd be reassembling for a new edit.

Well, improbably, $20 million has been budgeted to complete post-production, special effects, score, and editing of a Snyder Cut.

A cut of a movie that already failed, which is part of an extended franchise universe that most expect will be put on ice and rebooted in a year or two anyway.

Which will be released on HBOMax (HBO's new extra fee premium-upon-premium service), supposedly in 2021.

Will it be any good good? Probably not! Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice both showed that Snyder's vision for the DC Universe was... the Watchmen Universe, which had already been filmed.

As Jenny Nicholson snarked: "Someone should send a copy of Watchmen to Zack Snyder, I think he'd like it." Synder also directed Watchmen, of course. Znyder's DC Universe movies were basically the Watchmen redone, but this time with DC's most popular heroes.

But as many people, including myself, say: Even though Snyder's cut is probably a dour, sluggish, ponderous, dark, grimy, pretentious mess, it could not be worse than the Wheedon abortion.

As Trump says: What's the worse that could happen?

5 The biggest problem with the theatrical cut of Justice League (amongst others) was the fact that it created several new heroes and spent virtually no time building them up because they only had two hours to do everything with.

A four hour cut could address that.

Another thing is that for all the faults of Man of Steel and Batman V Superman, Snyder brought real ambition to the films. He was trying to make something that felt mythical in scope. Justice League felt smaller than even Batman V Superman.

I'm looking forward to the Snyder Cut. I don't expect a masterpiece, but I do expect another big, flawed shoot for the moon kind of entertainment.

yeah, he does. Some think he's a cryptoconservative. I don't think that. I think he's just a liberal who is not very political or at least not loud about it.

But he's not nearly as awful in that respect as the sex pest Whedon.

It was his mustache, and it only applied to the reshoots done by Whedon.

Cavil had finished principal photography on Justice League and moved onto Mission Impossible Fallout, then the calls came for Whedon reshoots and Cavil was contractually obligated to keep the stache.

So they spent a lot of money making him look weird.

Yeah, for all the faith they put into Snyder from the start, they really pulled the rug out from under him in Justice League.

I mean, it makes a bit of sense considering the lackluster response critically and commercially for Batman V Superman, but it's was still a shitty way to go about it.

It didn't help that they forced him to cut BvS down to 2.5 hours, which ended up making the overcomplicated Ultimate Cut pretty much incomprehensible.

He was, because Moore is a commie asshole and did not realize that a man whose chief character trait is justice above all can still be a compelling character- even if you give him a kind of creepy vibe as well.

That really kind of puts Watchmen into perspective for me. The truest 'Hero' in the book is the character Moore disliked and the one he considered the 'hero' was actually a mass murderer- but that's ok, because he's smart.

As you say, fuck you Alan Moore.

Sucker Punch is a very bad movie. The "plot" is a series of action sequences imagined by a girl right before she gets lobotomized. The action sequences are very fantastical-- a giant samurai golem thing, dragons, fighting German zombies in WWI with modern weapons, really weird shit. The chicks are hot.

It's really not good. I will say, though-- someone took a lot of time teaching those gals how to combat glide and clear corners, because that movie is one of the most true to life depictions of room clearing tactics I've ever seen.

39 Honestly the Snyder cut is going to suck ass. I'll say this, Man of Steel was a better Superman movie than any of the Christopher Reeves movies. But the Christopher Reeves movies were better movies than Man of Steel. Snyder got the powers of Superman right and his abilities. But he also sucked at getting any of the soul of Superman right. And he completely failed at understanding Batman. DC completely fucked up when they panicked and decided to use his Man of Steel as the start of their Justice League Universe.

You want to see how you do Death of Superman right? The DC animated movie did it. Snyder could never achieve that.

Yeah, Sucker Punch is dumb. It makes no sense either plot-wise or in terms of its theme, which contradicts itself constantly.

42 I hope in this 4 hour cut that 30-40 minutes is an extended Gal Gadot yoga routine.

46 Honestly, the only cut that would have saved JL would be to cut Superman.
Nothing against Cavil, (who could have been a good Superman if given a script written for Superman, not angry murderous space alien), but in the final movie Superman is superfluous. He steps over everyone's toes at the end, his resurrection makes no sense, and the less said about that CGI lip the better.
Cutting him would have freed 20-30 minutes for character development and led to a climax where they would have to actually come together to beat the baddie. Follow up with Bruce observing the dead flowers blooming at the end and you would set up resurrection of Superman for the next film.
Would it be the Avengers, or even good?
No, but it would be Aquaman level competent at a minimum.

Posted by: HowardDevore at May 20, 2020 05:11 PM (H6aLc)

47 I don't even blame Snyder. He was obviously offered a ton of movie for a half-baked answer to Avengers, and wasn't invested enough in the DCU to care about the result. I suspect the Snyder Cut is being released just to claw something back on this turkey, which combined with Hollywood accounting will get WB some kind of financial benefit overall. Anyone dumb enough to think WB is actually sinking $20 million into this, as opposed to horrifically abusing their balance sheets, might not be paying attention- if they were, they'd put the movie in actual theatres instead of an HBO channel.

It still had big problems - mostly from casting (Lex Luthor/charisma-chemistry free Amy Adams) - but the narrative structure was MUCH stronger and motivations were a lot clearer. 74 They should have opted to go the different road from Marvel and be "the FUN heroes."

I guess I consider DC to be the gritty one and Marvel to be the "fun" derivative one?

so .. I mean you have a point but DC would not naturally be the more lighthearted of the two

it's just Marvel does nothing but rip off DC and others and go whatever way they think will make them the most money!

lol Zack Snyder and DC are a perfect match - and neither should probably really make movies - they won't be mainstream anyway

what the heck, Im a DC property. Zack should make the Black Orchid movie. but it wouldn't be good as "lighthearted"

That's actually a very deep conservative idea. Rorschach came from about the worst childhood one could imagine, and rather then being helpless due to it turned himself into something positive, even though he himself was far from perfect.

He didn't spend the movie lecturing Ozymandias about privilege - he fought him because Ozymandias did something morally wrong, and he fought on even when he knew he couldn't win because it was the right thing to do.

81 63 Well, the extended version of "Batman v. Superman" was WILDLY better than the theatrical version. It still had big problems - mostly from casting (Lex Luthor/charisma-chemistry free Amy Adams) - but the narrative structure was MUCH stronger and motivations were a lot clearer. The "Martha" thing is still stupid (again, not without its problems) but it truly illustrates how editing can destroy a decent movie.

=========

I think there's a mild defense of the Martha bit.

Superman knows who Batman is, and who Bruce Wayne's parents were. "Huh, his mom and my mom have the same name. Weird," he says at the time.

Cut to Batman trying to kill Superman, Superman is trying to get through to Batman, but Batman isn't listening. Superman actually ends up getting his ass handed to him in the end. In his final moment, he appeals to Wayne's emotions instead of his intellect, using their mothers' name.

No, none of it is actually set up in the movie, so it's of very limited use. However, I do think there is A defense of the Martha scene, even if the movie isn't interested in making the argument itself.

Posted by: Vanya at May 20, 2020 05:10 PM (BAsqb)

Sucker Punch tries to be feminist empowerment and exploitative grind at the same time. And fails at both. Tarantino might have made it work. Snyder also made 300 and its sequel, which also had ludicrously trashy moments disguised as grrl power, so I'll chalk this up to a misstep, because those movies made hella bank.

98 Speaking of super hero movies-

The streaming price for the new Vin Diesel movie, "Bloodshot" dropped to $4.99 on Amazon,

so I gave it a whirl.

It's okay. Not great, not awful. You'll be entertained but it feels like you can predict every beat in this movie.

The semi-original thing here is the premise that VD(!)'s character is a soldier who was killed and who is brought back to life by filling his circulatory system with nanorobots that instantly repair any injury.

So, you get lots of cool shots of VD being blown apart and simultaneously reassembled by the nanorobots as he kills the holy hell outta everyone involved with the murder of his wife.

Some nice twists. Lots of stealing from other movies. Good acting. Nice action.

Worth a watch and you'll probably enjoy it but you won't be waiting on pins and needles for "Blood Shot 2"

Check it out.

I don't think the point is to convince Batman that Superman is a person with a mommy, it simply to emotionally jolt him to get him to think about what he's doing for a second. "I have a human mommy" wouldn't do it. Shouting "Martha" could.

Again, the movie doesn't do the work necessary to make the moment really work, but I think that's the point.

121 Listen, the best version of Superman was done in '78, the best version of Batman was done in '89, the best version of Wonder Women was a TV show from the mid to late '70s.

Nobody cares about any other DC characters besides those three and most modern day directors suck and truly competent old school directors want nothing to do with super hero films.

Todd Phillips, Joker was a complete outlier, also Jaquin Phoenix is never bad in anything, ever.

Nolan's Batman entries are uneven, and Heath Ledger's performance as Joker was a revelation.

Marvel succeeds because of better source material ad characters and Kevin Feige has a death grip on the MCU and actually likes the source material and got lucky with Robert Downey Jr being Tony Stark incarnate.

Everything that is successful with the MCU flows from that, let's see what happens with the SJW Eternals and not having RDJ to carry the load.

Back when they knew how to write funny dialog! A lot of the TV and screenwriters then had either come up through vaudeville, or they knew people who had. Those writers knew how to set up a joke and make it pay off -- sometimes more than once in the same movie.

From what I've read, they gave the movie to an editing house primarily responsible for commercial editing, taking it away from David Ayer, the director.

The editing house just let its freak flag fly, helping to cement Suicide Squad as one of the worst big budget films of the last decade.

148 It'll still suck....but it will suck less than weird reshoots with CGI Henry Cavill upper lip. The giant flappy vagina on Joss Whedon to not only put those scenes in the movie, but to have it be the very first scene of the movie. I thought I would hate Ben Affleck as Batman, and I didn't really like him as Bruce Wayne, but I thought he was convincing as a guy that could kick the shit out of thugs. Faggy Flash, and autistic Lex Luther were bad enough to make the good casting choices look bad. Damn shame they wasted Cavill, Mamoa, and Gadot.

I have always wondered, why have trash compactors on a space station?

Especially one designed to turn planets into asteroid belts.

It's not like they're worried about how much space junk they're creating.

So why not just... eject the garbage out into space?

Other than it would shorten the escapee's lifespans considerably.

No, none of it is actually set up in the movie, so it's of very limited use. However, I do think there is A defense of the Martha scene, even if the movie isn't interested in making the argument itself.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, fighting terrorist in Nakatomi Tower at May 20, 2020 05:16 PM (LvTSG)

Yeah, that's why I never had a huge problem with the whole Martha thing.

It's clear that Superman is about 5 seconds away from being murdered by Batman.

A Batman who sees nothing more than the ALIEN asshole who trashed Metropolis and God knows who else will die if I don't do the hard thing and kill this ALIEN fuck.

So, in essence Superman gives him a very short hand version of Shylock's "do I not bleed" speech from "Merchant of Venice" -

Superman is saying - Hey, a-hole! I have a Mother whom I love. I am a son who loves my Mother as deeply as you did. I'm human in every way that counts.

Could of been done better but that's the point of that scene and it appropriate given the issues for Supes in "The Man of Steel".

180 One of the themes that BvS really points up is that by "violating" the way of doing things Jor-El endangers *this* planet.

That Superman is likely to become the ultimate alien villain in a sort of Injustice storyline is highly illustrative of the power dynamic that they have been playing on since Man of Steel.

I like it. I don't like Gotham being right across the river from Metropolis (which is probably my biggest gripe).

I also like the grim Batman who has to find his niche with all the super-powered people around him. Determination and acceptance of a "coach" role is how he does it, even when it's all taking a toll on his aging body.

Batman "IS the job."

Right! I'd forgotten about those.

I used to have an edition of EotE with an intro by Larry Niven, who said that he preferred Saberhagen's epic to LotR -- but admitted it was a matter of taste.

Saberhagen has been unjustly forgotten. In the late '70s he did a paperback original called The Dracula Tape, which is Dracula telling his adventure in England from his point of view. It's both hilarious and exactly on point.

Will do but the net of it isn't that complicated. The Ukrainian government under Petro Poroshenko was working corruptly with Biden (and probably McCain) to launder US tax dollars and give kickbacks to Biden and probably many others. I'm pretty sure it wasn't just the US but other governments were involved through the IMF which is why the left has been saying that it wasn't just Joe that wanted the prosecutor looking into all of this fired.

I've thought all along this was a big reason for the Russia collusion garbage and why much of the dirt from the left in 2016 came from Ukraine.

It also shows that some of the favorites from the Ukraine impeachment including George Kent and Yovanovitch were involved as was the FBI.

This is bigger than a single article. This is core and I don't see how Joe survives as the nominee.

Sucker Punch is one of the ugliest movies I've ever seen. Which is quite a feat, considering how many good looking women are in it.

If he was trying to make a point about exploiting women, he sorta lost sight of that, because this movie is one of the most exploitative things ever filmed.

Obi-Wan would have been his friend, trying to draw the best out of him, but he'd have spiralled into bitterness like a Ph.D working at Starbucks. That bitterness would lead to discovering the Dark Side, and its quick and easy power would let him appear to be the hero he was supposed to be. So, I sold the ones I would never reread and actually could never see myself rereading. Anthony was one of the casualties.

My Episode 1: The Republic is falling into corruption and warlordism, with much of the outer rim beset by pirate fleets who grow more brazen each passing day. A pirate fleet is besieging Naboo, and two Jedi Knights are sent to assist: Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi. There ship barely make it to the surface after being pursued by pirate forces. After saving Amidala from an assassination attempt, they escape with the Queen and the Naboo government using a fleet of decoy ships, most of which are destroyed. The Jedi and Amidala escape aboard a spice smuggler's ship. The ship is piloted by Owen Lars and navigator Anakin Skywalker. Damaged, they land on Tattoine, where Anakin agrees to pilot in a podrace in order to pay for parts to repair the ship. Obi-Wan and Amidala share a bit of budding attraction while helping to repair the ship.

During the race pirates attack the ship, led by Darth Maul. Maul defeats Kenobi and kidnaps Amidala. The Jedi join up with a Republic fleet preparing to break the siege, and later lead the smugglers and a Republic commando unit onto the pirate asteroid base to rescue Amidala. During the battle the Jedi engage Maul while Anakin saves Amidala. Qui-Gon is killed by Maul, and in turn is killed by Kenobi, who is trapped by pirate troops and combat droids in a cargo bay until rescued at the last minute by an attack shuttle piloted by Anakin and Amidala.
After the funeral for Qui-Gon, Kenobi offers to bring Anakin along with him to see the galaxy. Later, he watches a holorecording by Qui-Gon, who states that he believes Anakin is force-sensitive, and "extremely powerful". Qui-Gon suggests that Kenobi should keep an eye on the young man, but not let the Jedi council know about him for fear of what they would do.

275 Not a fan of Snyder's DC universe but I'm happy to see he will get to finish/release the movie he wanted to make. Also happy justice League seems to have ended wheedon's carrer.

Other than that, I'm over super heroes. Burn all the money you want hollywood.

The Boys, on Amazon, is worth a look. It's an anti-superhero story.

Not sure where they go in Season 2 though, might turn into a trainwreck, but the first season was terrific.

277 It was *just* 2 1/2 good movies 40 years ago. And it's *best* movie was a A-to-B vehicle trying to get to the movie where Hamill can't act.

That's all it will ever be.

The next 40 years is salting and re-salting the ground.

KOTOR was arguably better than Empire, and singlehandedly saved Star Wars at the turn of the century. It is the game that truly made Bioware, excepting maybe Dragon Age. But Bioware is long since dead, and I don't actually think The Mandalorian will be enough to save Star Wars from the hate its new owners offer it.

It's based off a comic book series that has a definite story arc, so at least they have that to work with.

After the Yanukovych group escape to the Russian Feeration, these individuals, using the positions obtained after the Maidan, in coordination with the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden, former US Charge' d'Affaires a.i. in Ukraine George Kent and FBI Supervisory Special Agent for Eastern European Karen Greenaway, committed actions to redistribute the assets of the Yanukovych group and counter the investigation. In particular, this concerns episode related to the legalization of funds through the purchase and sale of the UMH Group media holding, bonds of Ukraine's external public debt and the like.

Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser are Fritz Leiber's series. DeCamp (whom I met at an SF convention way back in '87) started with SF and fantasy and helped to revive Conan the Barbarian long before the 1982 movie by writing more stories about him.

292 Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at May 20, 2020 06:00 PM (SgjGX)

That's not bad, Alex.

My buddy and my Prequel tale was simple:

-You meet Anakin as a young man.

-Make him and Obi-Wan comrades. Actual likable friends. It is important to make Anakin seem like someone you are actually horrified is going down the obvious bad path. That gives it the sense of inexorable tragedy. Plus, you have to make him someone the audience WANTS to see redeemed (Smacks Lucas across the face with a halibut for the killing small children bit.)

-The girl is what starts to come between them and drives Anakin toward the dark side, plus the things he has to do during the clone wars (NOT killing kids or drowning kittens or puppies.)

There is a reason that love triangles are an old trope- they are something that people can relate to and ... forgive.

297 That's not bad, Alex.

My buddy and my Prequel tale was simple:

I kind of hit the same highlights as you.

A love triangle between Obi-Wan, Amidala, and Anakin to give some conflict and explain some of the later decisions.

Setting up a friendship between Obi-Wan and Anakin.

Setting up Obi-Wan as Anakin's mentor, but unsuited for the role, which helps give an air of grief over Anakin's fall ("It was my fault!").

Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at May 20, 2020 06:09 PM (SgjGX)

298 Normally, I like a movie that is so long you can come out of it, take a breather, and go right back in.

With Phantom Menace it was "I'm *still* watching this movie?!"

We had instilled a love of the original series into my young son and I vowed to say nothing bad about the movie.

I enjoyed The Meh Awakens a trifle more and I tried to say nothing about it, until my much older son started talking it down.

300
Mid-century smut dressed up as moral propaganda was at least regular porno and presumably made by high-t, mob-affiliated men in shiny, tailored suits. Probably carried ivory-handled nickel-plated derringers, too.

For ours we get movies with no tits, that feature greased up muscle jocks in lycra costumes, and it's made by an effeminate sack of shit who only gets laid because of a casting couch.

301 For the record you can like 300 as a liberal. I just watch it muted.

Posted by: Barack Obama at May 20, 2020 06:13 PM (WdocV)

302 Snyder does great visuals, but he's kind of a shitty storyteller.

Not having seen Dawn Of The Dead, 300 is his best, but the original stuff added into the movie (the comic series was very short) was boring fluff.

Watchmen lacked any and all imagination.

Sucker Punch was supremely self-indulgent. It felt like a too clever by half film school project with a $100 million dollar budget. Not without its redeeming qualities (sooo many nice legs) but it's a minimally talented director thinking he's an arteest with a muddled message about women's rights and satirical jabs on notions of female empowerment.

Man Of Steel wasn't Watchmen. No, definitely not Watchmen. Man Of Steel was Miracleman. And if you don't know what I mean read a synopsis of Alan Moore's run on Miracleman and you'll understand.

Batman V Superman was...okay. Just okay. And completely unnecessary.

Justice League was trash and I don't care what they say that was still 95% Snyder's film. It was Snyder's own rancid bloody stool. Whedon, sleazeball though he may be, knows how to tell a fucking story.

Anyway, still not getting HBO.

306 When I bought a new Sony BluRay player, it came bundled with a copy of "Justice League."

That was a year ago and I haven't taken the wrapper off.

Looks like that was the right decision and there is no reason to change it,
