Ben Smith: "Resistance Journalism" Has Corrupted the Heart of the Media

Glenn Greenwald quotes from a recent Ben Smith piece, a piece which notes that leftwing hero Ronan Farrow seems to be a shoddy journalist -- if a journalist at all -- who will freely dispose of rules and rigor in the pursuit of dramatic, book-deal-worthy headlines.

Smith also notes that Ronan Farrow had a completely fakenews "blockbuster" about the Trump administration supposedly destroying secret, incriminating correspondence with Michael Cohen. Spoiler: Proof for this allegation can be found in the same file establishing that Cohen's cellphone "pinged" towers in Prague, Czechia, when Cohen was meeting with Putin.

Smith attacks "resistance journalism" as being a wholly corrupt enterprise which not only violates all norms of journalism and rigor, but which praises itself for dispensing of such restraints when seeking to attack... well, let's face it: OrangeManBad.

What is particularly valuable about Smith's article is its perfect description of a media sickness borne of the Trump era that is rapidly corroding journalistic integrity and justifiably destroying trust in news outlets. Smith aptly dubs this pathology "resistance journalism," by which he means that journalists are now not only free, but encouraged and incentivized, to say or publish anything they want, no matter how reckless and fact-free, provided their target is someone sufficiently disliked in mainstream liberal media venues and/or on social media:

[Farrow's] work, though, reveals the weakness of a kind of resistance journalism that has thrived in the age of Donald Trump: That if reporters swim ably along with the tides of social media and produce damaging reporting about public figures most disliked by the loudest voices, the old rules of fairness and open-mindedness can seem more like impediments than essential journalistic imperatives.

That can be a dangerous approach, particularly in a moment when the idea of truth and a shared set of facts is under assault.

In assailing Farrow for peddling unproven conspiracy theories, Smith argues that such journalistic practices are particularly dangerous in an era where conspiracy theories are increasingly commonplace. Yet unlike most journalists with a mainstream platform, Smith emphasizes that conspiracy theories are commonly used not only by Trump and his movement (conspiracy theories which are quickly debunked by most of the mainstream media), but are also commonly deployed by Trump's enemies, whose reliance on conspiracy theories is virtually never denounced by journalists because mainstream news outlets themselves play a key role in peddling them:

We are living in an era of conspiracies and dangerous untruths -- many pushed by President Trump, but others hyped by his enemies -- that have lured ordinary Americans into passionately believing wild and unfounded theories and fiercely rejecting evidence to the contrary. The best reporting tries to capture the most attainable version of the truth, with clarity and humility about what we don't know. Instead, Mr. Farrow told us what we wanted to believe about the way power works, and now, it seems, he and his publicity team are not even pretending to know if it's true.

EVER SINCE DONALD TRUMP WAS ELECTED, and one could argue even in the months leading up to his election, journalistic standards have been consciously jettisoned when it comes to reporting on public figures who, in Smith's words, are "most disliked by the loudest voices," particularly when such reporting "swim[s] ably along with the tides of social media." Put another way: As long the targets of one's conspiracy theories and attacks are regarded as villains by the guardians of mainstream liberal social media circles, journalists reap endless career rewards for publishing unvetted and unproven -- even false -- attacks on such people, while never suffering any negative consequences when their stories are exposed as shabby frauds.

It is this "resistance journalism" sickness that caused U.S. politics to be drowned for three years in little other than salacious and fact-free conspiracy theories about Trump and his family members and closest associates: Putin had infiltrated and taken over the U.S. government through sexual and financial blackmail leverage over Trump and used it to dictate U.S. policy; Trump officials conspired with the Kremlin to interfere in the 2016 election; Russia was attacking the U.S. by hacking its electricity grid, recruiting journalists to serve as clandestine Kremlin messengers, and plotting to cut off heat to Americans in winter. Mainstream media debacles -- all in service of promoting the same set of conspiracy theories against Trump -- are literally too numerous to count, requiring one to select the worst offenses as illustrative.

Exactly the same journalism-destroying dynamic is driving the post-Russiagate media landscape. There is literally no accountability for the journalists and news outlets that spread falsehoods in their pages, on their airwaves, and through their viral social media postings. The Washington Post’s media columnist Erik Wemple has been one of the very few journalists devoted to holding these myth-peddlers accountable — recounting how one of the most reckless Russigate conspiracy maximialists, Natasha Bertrand, became an overnight social media and journalism star by peddling discredited conspiratorial trash (she was notably hired by Jeffrey Goldberg to cover Russigate for The Atlantic); MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spent three years hyping conspiratorial junk with no need even to retract any of it; and Mother Jones’ David Corn played a crucial, decisively un-journalistic role in mainstreaming the lies of the Steele dossier all with zero effect on his journalistic status, other than to enrich him through a predictably bestselling book that peddled those unhinged conspiracies further.

He notes that none of the "resistance journalists" on the left nor the overexposed, Soros-funded NeverTrump pundits who have promoted unhinghed conspiracy theories has paid any price at all for having done so. None of them in fact will even admit these are/were conspiracy theories.

Ask AllahPundit directly if the conspiracy theories he's pushed for three and half years were conspiracy theories. Ask Jake Tapper. Ask Brian Stelter. Ask David French.

They'll evade the question.

The point at which a conspiracy theory turns into a capital-letters Conspiracy Theory is when its adherents start scoffing at demands for evidence as if that's dirty pool.

Or when they scoff at the many, many proofs against their conspiracy theory -- you know, the ultimate proof that a conspiracy theory is true is when They have faked a lot of "evidence" to "disprove" it.*

David French is fond of claiming he never pushed these theories at all -- despite his published words promoting these theories -- and claims that he merely "supported Mueller."

But then the moment a #ResistanceJournalist gives him hope that the conspiracy theories he supposedly never promoted can be salvaged, he's right back out there pushing those conspiracy theories again.

Until that latest last gasp of hope is itself discredited.

Then David French is right back to claiming I never pushed the conspiracy theories that you can plainly see from my Twitter Timeline I pushed almost every fucking day.

Anyway -- none of them has paid a price, none of them has even been made to answer the most basic questions about why they were so eager to push a conspiracy theory despite -- as the CNN chyron would say -- those conspiracy theories being WITHOUT EVIDENCE.

In fact, the more conspiracy theories they push, the more they get promoted, and the more book deals they sign:

By far the easiest path to career success over the last three years -- booming ratings, lucrative book sales, exploding social media followings, career rehabilitation even for the most discredited D.C. operatives -- was to feed establishment liberals an endless diet of fearmongering and inflammatory conspiracies about Drumpf and his White House. Whether it was true or supported by basic journalistic standards was completely irrelevant. Responsible reporting was simply was not a metric used to assess its worth.

It was one thing for activists, charlatans, and con artists to exploit fears of Trump for material gain: that, by definition, is what such people do. But it was another thing entirely for journalists to succumb to all the low-hanging career rewards available to them by throwing all journalistic standards into the trash bin in exchange for a star turn as a #Resistance icon. That, as Smith aptly describes, is what "Resistance Journalism" is, and it’s hard to identify anything more toxic to our public discourse.

Read the whole thing.

* There's a saying that no American thinks of himself as poor, but merely as a temporarily-embarrassed millionaire.

Similarly, for NeverTrumpers and the Anti-Drumpf! Media, there's no such thing as a discredited conspiracy theory -- just a temporarily-embarrassed Larger Truth.

45 The media signaled its own demise when they started to self identify as Journalists, instead of reporters.

A Journal is a personal document full of feelings and interpretations. It describes how you view an event, how you feel about it. How you perceive it.

It was actually worse for the Resistance than that.

The dossier was never supposed to be published. It was supposed to be kept under wraps so that resistance "journalists" could strategically leak pieces of it to build the narrative. Once Smith dumped it in full the twitter investigators went to work tearing it apart.

Tapper went after Smith for this very reason at the time. He said it something like the professional equivalent of stepping on his dick.

They have known all along that the dossier was fake, they still used it to try and take down a duly elected president. They are as corrupt as the Obama administration was.

This same press via JournoList helped create the myth of Obama by coordinating to hide and denounce any inconvenient info about his past from getting reported in 2008, and they kept on covering. Back then it was Palace Guard media instead of #Resistence, but two sides of the same coin.

And they resisted GWBush for 8 years before that, and protected the Clintons before that. . .

This scamdemic was the nuclear solution to an unotherwise unbeatable Trump administration. They realized the death and destruction that would be unleashed but they pushed button.

One wonders whether anyone anywhere on Trump's team has devoted 2 minutes to actually examining the actual situation as it's developed, WRT the public health aspect. 11/ the transaction was being done through Kolomoisky's Privatbank - both mentioned by Biden. According to Alexander Cockburn in Harper's in 2015, https://harpers.org/2015/08/undelivered-goods/...,
Kolomoisky and his partner had embezzled US$1.8 billion (!!) from IMF loans arranged by Biden et al.

Anyone remember when Fake News used to tell us why they wouldn't cover certain stories? It was because Republicans "would only politicize it."

For instance, they couldn't cover a story because the Romney campaign would "seize it" and use it politically.

222 What happened for many years (by fluke or serendipity) is that the nature of journalism was such that the government was it's biggest target. Some reporters went after them all and some went after a particular faction but they all were targets.

Journalists were after powerful men both for what they could do for them but for what they would gain by bringing them down.

Then in the '70's more of them became part of one faction; the left. And since then they've made a religion out of denying conservatism and worshiping liberalism

They've been joined by Academia and of late Science and even business have been subsumed by this cult. Even Sports hasn't been able to keep separate.

And yet conservatism still exists and grows and the left is crazy insane over that fact alone. We're never supposed to win and we certainly are not supposed be fight back.

Seems openly corrupt to me; $ 1 billion US for removing the non-corrupt prosecutor who is investigating Burisma and by extension, Biden's son and meal ticket, and who was recently elected , and then replacing him with a hand picked prosecutor and passing legislation (which I assume no longer allows the prosecutor to investigate and prosecute without some form of committee or approval?) all of which stops the corruption investigation in its tracks for good.

Accurate?

ATT and Comcast are so large that the cash flow impact of catastrophic failure at CNN or MSDNC will never be noticed. These media companies shelter the deranged left, people like Maddow and Todd, or Tapper and Tater. They seem immune from capitalism, and from creative destruction.

Hope that proves wrong. I'd love to see Todd trying to scratch out a living on a factory line, and Maddow responsible for milking cows at dawn. I don't think the CNN types are employable anywhere else, so I'd love to see them asking for dollar bills on Ninth Avenue, where the tunnel empties out.

269 Thank you for this , Ace. Two thoughts after reading:

1. The Media no longer reports, it has become Current Affairs and Politics Entertainment. A version of pr0n for too many in this country.

Much of it is still sold to the rubes as Impartial Straight-Up Reporting. It is important for The Media to maintain that fiction, so they can wrap themselves in the First Amendment as The Fourth Branch of Government, and portray themselves as The Only Real Guardians of Truth, Justice, and The American Way.

2. If/when Durham hands-down indictments, do not expect any members of the Dem-Media Complex, other than Dershowitz and Turley, to repent or do anything but call the indictments the corrupt result of a political witch-hunt by Trump and his hand-picked Attorney General.

Among themselves, all the members of the Dem-Media Complex will say that the only thing Comey and others did wrong was not succeeding to take-out Trump. Some will say as much on-air or in-print; most will publicly push the Trump-Barr corruption of justice story line. Oh, and that Comey, McCabe, etc., are Martyrs.

279 For two reasons: attacking Helen Gahagan Douglas as a
commie* - which she was, and especially for ringing up Alger Hiss, who
was strongly supported by the NYT and WaPo. What two newspapers led the
charge to get Nixon? Why, the NYT and WaPo, as luck would have it.

*I just checked Douglas's bio on Wiki, and found this gem:

"Fellow Representative John F. Kennedy quietly donated money to
Nixon's campaign against Gahagan Douglas, the two sharing similar views
on the threat of communism."

Yes, it was a Jap destroyer. A vewy vewy quiet one.

The captain and crew were obviously sleeping. The Navy originally was going to court-martial Kennedy for dereliction of duty, but Papa Joe managed to head that off.

Through the magic of marketing, the Kennedys made this sorry episode into a plus:

(Again from Wiki): "His actions to save his surviving crew after the sinking of PT-109 made him a war hero."

Wow. If he'd done his duty, they wouldn't have needed saving.

Americans'll try anything once if they accept the premise.

We were hoodwinked and our government was at the center.

But now we see it's not all true and they government still wants to say it is and force us to remain serfs and that's just not going to happen.

Perhaps this will translate into some anti-democrat votes in November. The LIV's have now gotten a front row seat for the display of what the left really wants to do and what it means for people.

I think they made a big mistake by hanging on so long. I'm pretty sure Wolf is in trouble but he's got 2 years to recover. Some of those folks don't have 2 years to hide what they did.

I just hope Trump is elected and we get the House back and keep the Senate. Then we've still got a chance.

309 Journalism is, for pretty much every outfit today (including Fox, Washington Times, and OANN) not about reporting facts and information but about feeding red meat to various groups. No news organization at the national level can survive or make money on just being dry, neutral, "just the facts ma'am" reporting any longer. That's not their business.

You have to abandon the idea that any real news organizations exist at the national level any longer. They do at the local level, reporting just things that happen in town, but not the state or national. There are no more news companies at that level any more. They are businesses that gather things to feed their customers, things people want to hear.

Are they true? Who cares, really. Its not about information any longer. Its about propping up presuppositions and beliefs about the world. Is it accurate? What difference does that make? They have bills to pay.

Think of them less as a news group than entertainment disguised as news. As long as they keep making their customers happy, their doors stay open and they keep their jobs. If they stop doing that, the subscriptions and online clicks go away and they have to learn to code.

So there's not only no incentive to apologize, tell the truth, or punish people for lying and ruining their reputation, there is incentive to NOT do so. Rachel Maddow's show isn't about giving her fans facts, its about spoon feeding them pap so they feel better about the future and reinforce their bubble. As long as she keeps doing that, she has a job. If she apologizes, retracts, corrects, or is punished for her continual stream of lies, well viewers leave.

325 There is a big element to this that I think is missing. It is correct as far as it goes with public figures and how it related to "resistance journalism" but it goes so far beyond public figures that limiting the view to this facet is missing the forest for the trees.

The handling of current events *in general* - say the Wuhan Virus of climate change is also "resistance journalism." The 1619 project is hybrid of "resistance journalism" and "resistance education." The treatment of Michael Flynn is example of the "resistance judiciary." Refusing to seat Trump appointees is example of the "resistance legislature." SJW, woke-ass recreations of classic stories is example of "resistance entertainment."

Whatever part of society, whatever the ostensible mission, whatever the rightful theater, you too can be indifferent to facts or reason or honesty or morality or ethical obligations. Simply be part of the "resistance." This goes back well before the whole "resistance" shtick, but it is all part and parcel and related.

The problem isn't so much "resistance journalism." It is the entire "resistance society" and the people who run it for the purposes of corruption the real society upon which it is built.

342 Re: the sidebar about the fat people with pixy hair?

That's due to them knowing they are not attractive and will likely never be attractive so why waste time with long hair? Takes a lot of work and also is difficult for a person to do for themselves when they're fat.

Even if they have money it's easier to take care of on a daily basis.

That's the same reason why women of a certain age cut their hair (helmet head) and it looks like it's built up.

It also may be an indication of distrust or dislike/hate of men or just normal trouble between the sexes.

When you're young you still have hope you'll find someone who will make you happy.

When you get to about 65 you realize that it's not happening as there's not enough time left. So women start looking plain or mannish and men turn into slobs and curmudgeons.

the morning seemed calm? everything going smoothly. the owner came out and asked the supporters in the parking lot to sit in their cars, at the behest of local cops.

he got another fine/citation but he says he's willing to pay those every day

but then the cops started harassing the people exiting (you can only work out two at a time by appointment). the police made everyone give them their names and took notes.

one guy said "um I'm not giving you my name" so he was arrested!

that's the last I heard but I think that made it get a little sporty. not good.

I think the most likely "there" around the birther issue is the extent to which Obama's records were hidden. The purported birth certificate his people eventually released was dubious at best, and there were claims (by a publicist or book agent, IIRC) that he was foreign born.

What I believe is that he opportunistically claimed to be a foreign student in order to go to college with lesser grades than they might have accepted otherwise.

It wouldn't be a technical disqualifier for Presidency, but it'd make him the male Elizabeth Warren.
