I like how Dupre silhouettes the windmill with the dimmed sun. It really brings out the age of the windmill. I also like how in the dark foreground, Dupre has added smallish fires to unify the regions of the painting. The oranges of the sky are splattered in the dark landscape--a small one just right of the windmill itself and a larger one bottom center. It's interesting that the two main fires are directly under the large fire of the sun. Finally, I like that Dupre placed the fireball of the sun behind the large black shape of the windmill. The sun is present, it is the main light source of the painting, but the artist dulled its intensity and dominance to allow the whole work to speak.

This painting can be a metaphor for the dying of the old ways (windmills) and the dawning of the modern age.
Or it can be a metaphor for the dying of civilization represented by windmill technology, and the regression to Quest For Fire. Posted by: Boots at April 22, 2020 09:47 AM (oGBso) 74
Some were asking if this is sunrise or sunset. I think this one depends on you. For me, I see a sunset, mainly because of the windmill. It's old and warn. The hut looks like a shanty. There are signs of life, i.e. the fires, but they are small. The sun itself is very dim, not the radiant life-giving orb it is. But I also don't feel a pessimistic mood about this work. It feels to me as a matter-of-fact, cycle-of-life image. Cie la vie, and all that.

This is not one I would put on the wall but I like it. The old mill against the setting sun has a feel of age and continuity, perhaps familiar comfort. The points of camp fires make me think of settling in for the night after a work day, relaxing for food, drink and socializing. (Yes, I'm projecting.)
The way Dupre captures the calm, evening sky with the yellows and oranges is relaxing and creates the silhouette for the landscape. It's all about the mood, not the details. Posted by: JTB at April 22, 2020 10:02 AM (7EjX1) 150

I have a ton of work today but want to quickly make a point that hit me while attempting to sleep:
PA - Wisconsin - Michigan we are the states (separating out Cali) with the worst Governors, making the worst decisions, and essentially torturing us all on purpose. WHAT ELSE DO THESE THREE STATES HAVE IN COMMON? Yes, we all voted for Trump in 2016 (I think?) and we are "swing states" with very very liberal hack governors. Those hacks are making an example of us. Either Barr helps us (ha!) or we are gonna have to take action. It's coming. Definitely in PA it's coming. Wolf is hiding in DC - he knows. Posted by: Kilroy wasn't here at April 22, 2020 10:19 AM (EV+4+) There's a lot of mythology about the Great Depression. If you look at the unemployment numbers, we're probably already as bad as 1933 right now, which was the peak of the Depression. If we cut trade with China, which could easily happen, we're going to see the agricultural sector collapse next, just like it did then. We produce far more than we can consume ourselves. We're keeping the stock market afloat and big companies alive because this time, we have chosen to create several trillion dollars of cash and pump it out into the business world. John Maynard Keynes said that would work, but no one really knows. It's never been tried on this scale. Undoubtedly economics students and professors will be studying this event for centuries to come. Well, for at least as long as our descendants remember how to read and write. Sorry to sound like a generic PSA warning, but everyone should be extra special careful about any on-line financial dealing in this season. There is some huge attempted cyberfraud going on. SBA got ripped off yesterday. The fact that you're dealing with a government entity is no guarantee that their cyberdefenses are adequate. We have some pretty good boys for going after them after they do it, but making it not happen in the first place is a whole different story. Just so you know the Dems Plans:
the first horseman is on a white horse, carrying a bow, and given a crown, riding forward as a figure of Conquest,[1] perhaps invoking Pestilence, Christ, or the Antichrist. The second carries a sword and rides a red horse and is the creator of War.[2] The third is a food merchant riding upon a black horse, symbolizing Famine.[3] The fourth and final horse is pale green, and upon it rides Death accompanied by Hades.[4] "They were given authority over a quarter of the earth, to kill with sword, famine, and plague, and by means of the beasts of the earth."[5] Posted by: Puddin Head at April 22, 2020 10:38 AM (kX3ms) 311

Grammie, I read that the electronic stimulus $ is deposited once a week so it may be that the banking info was available after that batch was deposited.
( my memory is failing, but, I think I read deposits are made starting weds thru fri ) Same for us, small amount owed, paid thru our bank account. I'm hoping the $ shows up in your account by the end of the week. It would have been nice if the deposit was given a timeframe, even if it was within a 7 day period, etc. Posted by: old chick at April 22, 2020 10:38 AM (sOete) 315
I hope everyone is taking a lesson reading about how the banks are fucking everyone they can.
Unless something amazing happens (like my plan), in about 2 to 3 months the real shit will hit the fan. 25 million will be out of work. Many more than that will be out of money and stop paying their bills. People who believe they have a cushion with credit cards they can draw from, equity lines, or even just the untapped equity in their paid off homes will have nothing. As soon as people stop paying their bills, the banks will shut off the taps for everyone but the richest Americans. Have a $10,000 credit line on your BoA Visa card and a $1000 balance? They'll send you a letter that your new credit limit is $800 and that you're over your limit by $200 - Pay immediately. Mortgage foreclosures will be through the roof and no new mortgages will be made for years. The only thing you can do to prepare is to max out every credit vehicle you have and go totally to cash. Make sure that cash is somewhere that can't be tapped to repay any of the credit. If everything miraculously works out and everything is fine 6 months from now, use the cash to pay back the credit you tapped along with the small interest penalty. If everything turns to shit, horde the cash, stop paying any debt bill and use the cash to help keep your family safe and fed. Posted by: jwest at April 22, 2020 10:38 AM (mrrpT) 316

I used to think that " regionalism" was a Good Thing, especially in the Obama Reign of Error. For starters, it has become apparent that I am in the wrong damned region. Secondly, every damned state that has a damned big city has home grown fascists lurking, IMO. Someone yesterday opined that what is shaking out from all this is URBAN vs RURAL. Ah, yes...Ira Einhorn. Killed his girlfriend and stuffed her body into a trunk. It was stored in the attic, where it quietly decomposed, dripping bodily fluids through the ceiling of the apartment below. Yeah, Ira was a great guy.

NY hospitals "accidentally" contaminated it. Posted by: CN at April 22, 2020 11:09 AM (ONvIw) They based their de-contamination protocols from watching Prometheus. Posted by: Archer at April 22, 2020 11:10 AM (gmo/4) LOL First take your helmet off an breath deeply to see if you can smell any contamination Second stick you face in the petri dish and see how close you can get tot he substrate without touching it. Third, when in doubt...taste test. Posted by: Cuthbert the Witless at April 22, 2020 11:18 AM (bFRyf) 527

What you are talking about is current conditions. But you are suggesting that people drastically increase their cash demands, and that is not something that banks can tolerate easily.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 22, 2020 10:56 AM (dLLD6) What he is talking about is stealing from a bunch of lending institutions and hiding the money somewhere where he thinks no one will find him. Posted by: runner at April 22, 2020 11:20 AM (zr5Kq) 529
Are you familiar with Cape San Blas? It's just a narrow spit of pure white sand sticking out in the Gulf, west of Apalachicola. No night life, no hotels or high rises, just peace and quiet. Which is why we love it.
Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 22, 2020 10:55 AM (ptqGC) No, and it sounds lovely. But the Jacksonville beaches were at least partly opened up, which gives me hope for the rest of the state. And certainly your private walk at the vacation spot. Best wishes Posted by: FloridaMan -- Convinced this has been overreaction at April 22, 2020 11:20 AM (R6LnX) 530

Should have keep the Missouri River Navigable rather than damming it.
Posted by: Archer Dude. For several months last spring, the Sand Hills were navigable. I don't even need to ask where you live. If Fort Peck goes, your yard will be "navigable." Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at April 22, 2020 11:24 AM (8IOEj) 533
Heh. I received an email from my church yesterday, subject: "Learn About Earth Day - A Weekly Update from Central UMC!"
My church has been hijacked by 'Progressives'. It isn't 'The Church' that is the problem, it is the parasites who have attached themselves to it. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 22, 2020 11:10 AM (bPH26) Send them an e-mail back, and put them some knowledge. Einhorn, Lenin's birthday, etc. Work of Satan...
