I miss donuts. There is a great place near the site I was supervisor at in Georgetown run by an Asian guy. Had the best glazed donuts I have ever eaten. He opened at 2 in the morning, so he could get the people getting off second shift at the Toyota plant. Gracious. Polite and effusive. Made awesome donuts.

One front and center is the XP-51, one of two the USAAC got as free from the British Mustang I contract. It is now part of the EAA collection.
The one immediately to the left in camouflage is a P-51B-1-NA that was recovered from a lake in Florida and completely rebuilt.
The bare metal razor back to the right is either a P-51B or a P-51C. Might be 'Princess Elizabeth.'
The bare metal bubble canopy with blue nose to the back left is a P-51D. A 'Blue Nosed Bastard from Bodney.'
The bare metal bubble canopy to the back right is a P-51H. Compare the tail to the D, taller. Also compare wing root, canopy, and prop; all different than the D. There are only three P-51H Mustangs flying.
And finally at the center back is the second XP-82 which was recovered from Walter Soplata in pieces and restored by Tom Reilly over many years.
If we are truly lucky we will see another Twin Mustang in the near future as an F-82E is being restored.

Greetings, Lin-Duh ... I never serve cakes the same they're baked ... I find both the texture and flavor are significantly improved if I bake and frost the cake, then refrigerate it in a covered container for 24-48 hours (allowing flavors to meld and the frosting to penetrate into the surfaces of the cake layers). If you want to be a believer, I suggest trying this with either chocolate or red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting.

Over at Insty there was an article on how Ford had flipped a plant in a month to turn out respirators (PPE for health workers, air filter systems so they could safely work) and the bulk of the comments were about "command economy" and "too late" and crying about this and that.
My thought was "Within a month they flipped that plant to making something else. That is Arsenal of Democracy stuff right there, that is awesome. Change the bandaid at least once a day. Use a small amount of polysporin.
I bought a chef's knife at IKEA several years ago. The first time I used it, the knife slipped and I almost cut of the tip of my index finger.
I washed it, applied polysporin, and wrapped a bandaid on it tightly. I kept bandaids on it for about 10 days. No scar.

I admit I've never fully gotten Frank, except for his pre-voice-issues work, when he sang like an ethereal angel. But I do see that he was not only very good at what he did, but also he put everything into his singing. I don't think it mattered what he hated and what he didn't; he always gave it his all.

I miss donuts. There is a great place near the site I was supervisor at in Georgetown run by an Asian guy. Had the best glazed donuts I have ever eaten. He opened at 2 in the morning, so he could get the people getting off second shift at the Toyota plant. Gracious. Polite and effusive. Made awesome donuts.

They were the best dang doughnuts I have ever, ever eaten. The gentleman in Crowley also made sausage rolls that would bring you to tears.

This whole thing has been a major turning point for me. I was the biggest supporter of law enforcement out there, but now that I see they just follow illegal orders from lunatic governors who "declare" jobs, praying, and protesting to be "non essential" and therefore illegal and punishable by arrest and fines, I no longer feel any obligation to support law enforcement ever again.
I think we should make this a major issue. Maybe the so called law enforcement officers will think twice. The left already hates them, so what if we hate them too? Who will stand by them? This is fucked up.

So please, go get some of those doughnuts tomorrow and savor them for me. We live in a doughnut desert here. Just Dunkin doughnuts, which are adequate, and Duck Doughnuts, which are not, and extraordinarily expensive as well.

Must be a Chicago thing. I have actually accomplished the same act. Using the mandolin with out the guard.
Yeah, direct pressure with on of the remaining digits until the bleeding slows (about two hours!) A dip in peroxide, cover the stump with gauze. Clean wound with soap and water every day, new compress.
Make room in cabinet for mandolin you will refuse to use again for the next, oh, three years or so.

Thankfully our area is pretty conservative, the local police chief has said they will NOT be arresting anyone for "violating" orders, meanwhile the health department is going around telling people they can be arrested and imprisoned for violating their orders. Thanks for the tip. The second cake came out way better. I use to bake quite a bit before I started back to work 3 years ago, always from scratch. My daughter loves red velvet cake. I prefer carrot cake myself. My husband is chocolate cake lover and one of my sons likes a lemon cake. I think I'm just out of practice since I rarely bake anymore.

That reminds me of my favorite.
In NYC's Times Square a few years back - probably 2011 - there was an attempted robbery. The police show up immediately, and the gangbanger points his 9mm at the policeman, and pulls the trigger. First shot misses. The second shot jams, allowing the policeman to kill the 'banger.
Banger's problem was that he turned his wrist as he held his gun, because it looked cool. After his first shot, the bullet jacket ejected, then landed back in the pistol in such a position as to jam the gun when he tried to shoot his second shot.

If Trump gets elected to a second term, he really needs to fix this Federal student loan crap - allowing people to go tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in Federally guarenteed debt for worthless degrees is something that really needs to stop.

I think it was officially called Crowley Doughnuts, but we called it Mr. Peter's Doughnuts, since the owner was...Mr. Peter. A devout Christian and very kind, with an amazing gift.

Cops are like certain breeds of dogs. While many are genuinely friendly, others have their inner rabid Pit Bull barely restrained, and eager to break free of the leash.
Those kinds really don't give a damn if their leadership is Conservative, Liberal or Agnostic.
Just so long as City Hall has a blanket "Back the Blue" mentality, they'll follow *any* order given to them.
"Officer Friendly", they ain't.
There's still plenty of Good Cops on the job though. Make acquaintance with cops as a common habit. The good ones will make themselves known to you.
Those are the ones whose business card you keep in your wallet. Just in case.
*pro tip* An officer on the same force as Officer Bully, can sometimes pull your fat out of the fire, by merely "vouching" for you.
Better to solve that problem at that level, before any lawyers need be involved.

I worked with a guy out in CA who was a Marine and had anger management issues. He wanted badly to be a cop.
He told me he failed the LAPD psych test (this was the 90's post-riots) but he thought he had a pretty good chance with the LA Sheriff's Office.

You're right about getting to know the local LEO's.
A couple of years ago we were having some flooding issues in my part of town.
My house was okay but the city had deposited several large piles of sand, bags and filler tubes.
I was helping fill bags for neighbors who were flooding. Another man was taking them to the older gentleman's house. Driving through a shallow back up pond.
An officer gave him a $300.00 ticket for that.
Later, another officer came by. The ticketed man raised hell about it. The officer looked at the ticket, said the guy was an ass and would take the stub out of the hopper.
I've had minimal interaction with the police here so no other real experiences.

I've been to the site, a nice calm lake today. There are some hilarious stories about that collapse! There was a jack-up drilling rig in the lake, with a crew of cajuns, and they were the ones who poked the hole in the salt mine. (Not their fault, I think it was the salt mine that didn't properly map their shafts) ANYWAY. they were on the rig and noticed a lot of strange things happening, like they lost all returns, and then the entire rig started settling lower and lower in the water. So, as the rig floor approached water level, they decided this Was Not Right, so they all went to shore to see what happened next.
Well, they're sitting there on the shore, and the rig keeps sinking deeper and deeper (the floor of the lake was slowly collapsing, but they didn't understand that yet) and finally the top of the 100' tall rig went under water, and it didn't fall over, it just went straight down. But now the water was just still, it hadn't broken wide open yet. So imagine the scene - their rig has disappeared, all is quiet, and about a half dozen cajuns are sitting on the bank looking at it, going "Wha' happen?" So they had a little rowboat, and got a 100 foot long cord with a weight on the end, and paddle out to the site where the rig was, trying to figure out how deep it was now. (the lake had only been 20' deep before) 20 minutes before all hell broke less, and the entire lake bottom caved into the earth with a waterfall hundreds of feet long, 2 cajuns are in a rowboat on top of the site dangling a string in the water and scratchin' their chins. They made it back to shore with about 5 minutes to spare, and it was just dumb cajun luck that they did.
Reportedly the ocean flowed backwards up the channel and into that hole for 3 days before it finally filled up.

I used to work with a woman whose husband was a cop. He knew exactly who the authoritarian cops were. Some police are actually calming in a stressful situation, others quickly get harsh.
My experience when being pulled over, I'm a leadfoot, is that if you are cooperative and don't whine, they are very reasonable.

Other night 1,349 police cars were on the interstate nearby, having collared some idiot who'd just shot/killed somebody at a Taco Hell not far away (right near my hockey rink). Pretty light show. That about sums up the local newz.
Local grocery store was relaxed, friendly, most staff masked up, most customers not. No direction arrows or store capacity limits on customers entering.
First time I've noticed since the Great Envirusing, Miramar is very active. Lots of taxpayer money can be heard being burned over yonder. Wondering if maybe it's the F-35s (they just started getting them). They're louder than F, much louder than F-18s.

My experiences have always been pretty neutral or good. People reflect what you give them a lot of the time, and police are no different in that respect. Stay calm and polite, and they will often be calm and polite.
Then there are the outliers.
It is... 1999ish? I am driving up to the lab in Indianapolis from Bloomington at around 1am. I had to go in to do some testing because they were in the middle of a grand mal freakout about the thermal compound they were making for a customer.
I get off the bypass and am coasting down the off ramp, Did not really pay attention to my speed since at 6am, people are usually doing 55-60 (instead of the posted 45-or35) coming up to the stop light. Policeman turns on his lights and I honestly do not have any idea why he pulled me over.
Right off the bat, I can tell he is in a mood.
'Do you know why I pulled you over tonight, sir?'
'Uh no.'
'You were doing xx a 45 zone!'
'Oh, crap, was I?'
'Yes. Have you had anything to drink tonight?'
This question caught me completely off guard. I know that is stupid, but I was caught of guard.
'No.'
'Then why do I smell alcohol?!' He gritted this one out and even took me more off guard.
'I don't know? Oh, I did brush my teeth about an hour ago.'
'I highly doubt you were using an alcohol based toothpaste!' He was almost shouting at this point.
'I rinsed with Listerine?' At this point, I am wondering what Twilight episode I have wandered into.
'Oh. I need to see your license and registration.'
I hand them over and he goes back to his cruiser. Comes back around 10 mins later.
'Due to your good driving record (he really did say this about as sarcastically as possible) you are just going to get a fine and you do not have to show up in court. you can just mail it in. Slow down.' Handed me the paper and walked away.
I figure he had had a horrible night. Probably argued with the wife. Maybe one of his kids had gotten into trouble. May have just been an asshole.

That's how I'm getting my degree, too. Which is funny, really, I'm in my 50's and already have the job my degree would qualify me for, but what the hey, they're paying for it. Why you may ask? Because when you deal with civilians it's a lot easier to say "I have a degree in XXX" rather than say "I graduated from [insert appropriate military tech school]" which is the "equivalent military training" for the same degree.

Indeed it does. You have to clamp the joint very well. But the gap-filling is a useful property in its own right. Originally, I was going to fix the ladder step by gluing it with Gorilla glue, and clamping it, which I did, and then was going to add a piece of plywood under it, to backstop it. But while looking for plywood, I found a nice hardwood board, the exact right thickness and width. So I cut it to length, and used the table saw to mill a groove along the bottom side for the tie rod, and Gorilla-glued that piece into the dadoes on the ladder legs. Ladder is rock-solid again.

As for "engineered virus", it depends on what you mean by engineered. See the Gain of Function techniques they employ.
What they do is accelerate mutations, by passing a virus sequentially though animal hosts (or cultured human cell hosts). This speeds up the mutation rate much faster than would occur in the wild.
They then look at those mutations, and see which one show promise, then select those and keep mutating them.

I see the TxMoMeets and I get firearm envy.
We shoot here, but not enough to have multiple weaponry tryouts... we're within city limits.
We DO play a pellet rifle game. Don't think it would satisfy the hard core... but would separate the wheat from the chaff.
Have enough room to let folks park RV's and camp far enough away from others for privacy.
Can put up at least 4 or 5 couples inside ...

So they really only go there twice a year. But damn if they don't know that's a store they like. 5 year old Kahlua jumps out of the car and races to the front door, thank God there weren't other people around. They enjoyed the experience and it was an outing since it was kind of cold here about 44 a high.

Thanks for that. I hope the researchers followup with a larger study to try and determine the death rate for sub-groups of the population. Going by just reported cases in South Korea, the death rate is approaching 25% for those over 80, which would mean that population should be isolated no matter what until its gone or we have a virus, but if it's closer to 5% perhaps we should maybe only isolate people who have the high risk pre-existing conditions.

The clothing co I do pt work for called & asked if I'd like to be part of a small distribution team to process online orders. I was caught off-guard, but happy to do my part for the economy, so I said, Sure.
But the first day was a mess. We were instructed to wear gloves, and change them often -- but the company hadn't sent any. Plus, only one mask each, which no one ended up wearing.
But of course they sent us more than enough boxes, etc, for the shipping!
It turns out, I'll earn the same amount as my unemployment, meanwhile, putting myself at risk.
But I'm afraid if I tell them I've changed my mind, when things are back to normal they'll retaliate by not giving me hours.
What should I do?

Wash your hands before you start, wash them when you leave. Dont touch your face! Like with handling money, assume most stuff you touch is dirty. If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask, do so. But don't be afraid. Unless you are immune compromised, your risk is very low.

We had the craziedt weather yesterday. Sunshine, mid 30s, windy. Then the snow flurries started that turned blizzard like. It would last for 2 minutes then stop. It kept happening all day. Windy enough that it looked like it was snowing sideways! Some accumulated at my mom's, but it didnt last. (She's closer to Lake Michigan than I am)

The last appt I went to with Mr.I, was in the waiting room and had a tickle in my throat. They had removed the water cooler. Everytime I cleared my throat to avoid coughing I'd get a look from someone else in the room. I was so uncomfortable, needing to cough i actually walked outside to the truck to get my water bottle.

My wife has a shitton of autoimmune ailments so we have to keep a close eye on her. We had a recollection of illness in Jan and she has a appt coming up at Cleveland Clinic. After speaking with her Dr at CC last week, he ordered it to be done locally.
Ironically enough, now that she had it, CC says it's okay to keep the long scheduled appt.

Drs say very unlikely to pass it and damn near impossible to get the same strain of it again. But, they feel multiple strains are already out there.
Although we didn't think so, I'm was the one at risk - a bit overweight and a long standing heart issue. Under control but it's there.
My wife has been on Plaquenil for years so, in her case, inadvertently at low risk.
The tip off for the Drs to have us tested was our observation our water tasted bad for a few days (coupled with low grade fever and general malaise). Our water should be tasteless - we have a whole house RO system.

I'm positive I didn't get this thing back in December/January. I felt fine al through the holidays but went on a ski club trip out west, Taos NM in January. Despite being on a packed plane and spending plenty of time with people I don't normally hang out with, I never got sick or had symptoms of anything. I remember remarking to another how strange that I felt fine I usually get a little altitude sickness with heavy breathing. So weird! That's why I want to get the antibodies test as soon as its available, to prove that I've never had Corona.

Trudge over to Krogers (it's too close to justify driving) to look at the empty shelves of everything I need, and still manage to overpay for a bunch of stuff I don't need but might need someday because who knows when this shit will end.
Then trudge back and work from home at my pay-cutted and gutted job. Wait for the 5:00 presser hoping for some glimmer of hope, and get none.
Drink. Sleep for a restless 5 hours or so. Get up and repeat. Day after day.

I don't know what it is about us up here but we have TP, cleaning supplies, the shelves are stocked... we were able to get everything we usually get with no problems.

It wasn't always speeding that got me pulled over. I've also been stopped for having a taillight out, rolling through a stop sign, etc., and even driving a Honda Civic. The cop said he was stopping me because he'd had reports of a stolen Civic in the area, and I said something like, "Oh my gosh, THANK YOU. so i wake up and find that NYC has decided the numbers aren't gruesome enough and they're now adding "Probable COVID-19 Deaths" to their running totals.
now, these are people who didn't get tested, but their health care provided said they had the right sorts of symptoms before dying.
and lo and behold, their total number of deaths jumped from over 6000 to over 10000.
yup, NYC just happen to estimate that about half its number of deaths was ALSO killed by the virus, but they aren't checking.

Seriously, I painted with a broad but somewhat realistic brush. There are a lot of really good dedicated people in the Civil Service, and it sounds like your son is one of them (as I would expect).
There are also a lot of free ride people in the Civil Service where they hardest thing they will ever did in life was to get hired and get through the probationary period.

don't really have to do your job ,(as performance is optional), you are
impossible to fire (even if lazy and incompetent), if you don't get a
raise (step increase) you can file a complaint, AND you get a sweet
pension for minimum time on the job.

I got sloppy with my explanation sorry. The byproduct of less cars, possible shortages of beef, less flights etc are all part and parcel of the green new deal.

our son had surgery yesterday and instead of only being able to see him for 10 minutes in recovery, his sister was able to actually spend some time in his room.
The hospital relaxed the visitor restrictions just that afternoon.

I guess but doing IT contract work for DFAS was the most miserable fucking job I ever had in terms of bureaucratic sloth and ineptitude. And the VA was the worst in terms of not knowing a damn thing about database design but fed us data that was supposed to be the gold standard in terms of accuracy except it had multiple cases of the same ssn that had to be filtered out. The best guys were ex military that knew what a sham the whole thing was but just soldiered on to retirement.
