Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | First-World Problems...Part Deux...The Advantages Of Social DistancingThere are gems hidden in this social experiment cum economic disaster that we are currently immersed in. The best part of course is that it is now perfectly acceptable to look at someone in a store or on the street and say, "Get the fvck away from me," something that many of us have wanted to do for most of our lives but were constrained by convention. And I must admit that it is a pleasure to see so many more people taking leisurely strolls around my little town...some alone, some with wives or husbands, and many with children and dogs in tow. We make it a point to say hello to everyone we pass, and it is a sad reflection of our times that some people seem startled by that simple bit of humanity. But it is balanced by those who smile and wave and say something silly and chipper and upbeat. So...what is better about this temporary dislocation? I've noticed the look of stay away from me as I walk around my town. I've seen people cross the street (with their dog) as I approach. Of course some did that before, as their dog wasn't as friendly toward strangers, or wanted to make friends with you. Lets hope we all bring back the smile down that dusty road into the future.

We had some friends of our youngest son come by this morning to take pictures of their kids in our bluebonnets - we have known this couple for a decade. I was astonished how stilted it all was, not getting close, us not offering and them not wanting to stay for lunch, no handshakes or hugs for them or the kids. And afterward we talked about why they would possibly put them or their kids at risk, or us. Sad, stupid times in America I think.

Finding positive in this situation is tough, since the daily folderol does tend to angry up the blood. But I do have plenty of time to deal with those chores I've been putting off for a while, now that the excuses are few and far between. This weekend I finally got around to straightening up that woodpile that fell over last winter. Though I hit a bit of a snag today, when I found that a skunk had taken up residence under the pile. So that project is on hold until I can convince Mr. Stinkypants to find a better place to den.

Pity of it is though, I've not had a paycheck now for the past three weeks, and none in sight into the foreseeable future. People who are not walking dogs regularly, are working from home, there's probably a lot of physical damage being done. Not moving around is a killer, in the long run.
When the "social distancing" experiment is over, there will be a strong uptick in heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a whole variety of other ailments. Deaths will be delayed, but they won't be put off. This experiment is going to have costs that no one can accurately tally. And the MAIN point of social distancing is slowing the rise in virus cases. Not reducing them. The social experimenters assumed from the beginning there would be just as many cases of virus, regardless, but this way our hospitals are not overwhelmed with too many sick people all at once. I would expect actual Flu fatality numbers to fall.
In addition, I expect: Lots of donations to Salvation Army and Goodwill. Because everyone is getting organized. Less cars parked on the streets as $6,000 in junk in garages is replaced with $30,000 cars. Business Office construction takes a big hit. Home offices abound, leading to much more high speed connectivity demands. A rational response would be to move pharmaceuticals and API synthesis to the US. Puerto Rico too, if Congress gets it's head out of it's ass. People who want to shackle Americans will self-identify. There needs to be social and voting feedback on the people in error. I'm teaching online. The two autistic kids from first period have really come out of their shells and participate more than ever. When I ask how everyone is doing the introvert from seventh period says it's never been better for introverts.
Everyone else is a mixed basket. I don't like literally phoning it in because my style is to stalk the room and point at kids' noses to get them to participate and if I drive to their homes I don't know if their moms will let me in. Posted by: Bandersnatch at April 05, 2020 02:40 PM (gd9RK) I don't want to get too detailed here, and I certainly don't want to overgeneralize... However, I have some folks with whom I deal, who have autism as a secondary diagnosis. I'm somewhat surprised at how well they are dealing with all this change. I could speculate why, but don't want to get that specific here. The ones who seem to be struggling the most, there's a clear personality disorder involved, and again, oversimplification is that it's about not getting enough attention. They're playing in their front yards with a parent observing. It's kind of nice. I used to walk down the side streets and never see a soul; now there's constantly someone coming toward me or walking down the other side of the road. It feels more like a neighbourhood now.

Bill Gates was on Fox News Sunday. Jabbering heads are still crediting his "Next thing that kills 10 million is pandemic" as being germane to to Covid-19.
But one of the most interesting things Gates said was that of all the countries, Taiwan had the best response. But, what is unique about Taiwan? They have a *universal* and *fundamental* distrust of China. In America we have a presidential candidate with a healthy distrust of China and we have the most likely opponent who this year told us that China was not a bunch of bad dudes. So the country that reacted the best to China is that country that didn't trust China and shut down flights to and from China as soon as they could. Unless the supermarkets and every other kind of retail store with long aisles (looking at you, Target), change their floorplans and have aisles wide enough for two carts to pass and maintain six feet of space, the "social distancing" simply does not work.
And the self-checkout stands with their touchscreen controls aren't gonna make it in our new world of I-can't-touch-anything. And the restaurants that think they are cool and hip that want to flip that iPad around to you so you can "complete your transaction" by touching that yukky screen, they aren't going to pass muster in our new world. Cash? Who want's ever again to use it? Hotels? Sleep in a room made up by a third-world maid, and hope she sanitized every single possible surface in there. I think I'll sleep in my car. Or in my tent out back on that grassy patch where every dog from here to Seattle has shat upon. The list can go on forever. We need the Fed to en-chip every single one of us like dogs get chipped. And Gran would chew them out for inappropriate behavior. Now that they are getting older, they think Gran is kind of cool. Gran doesn't act all stuffy and uptight like their other grandmothers, and Gran gives them the bestest books for Christmas and birthdays.
Years back, we were all gathered at daughter's house to celebrate a birthday with a cookout. Daughter-in-law was trying to coax granddaughter into eating a hot dog. Gran listened for a few minutes then asked the kid if she wanted ketchup or mustard on her hot dog. Kid said ketchup and ate every bite without a squawk. They work both ways. Anything is better than nothing, a bandana or surgical mask will catch inbound droplets and way better than the inside of your elbow for sneezing/coughing. Gotta love how this whole situation has obliterated every progressive would-be policy prescription. Globalism, climate change, open borders, international law and institutions, mass transit, high-density housing, government schools, regulation-bureaucratic controls, right down to banned plastic bags are all shown to be not just anti-liberty and anti-sovereignty--they are now revealed to be deadly and unworkable. The briefings have varied greatly in quality, from both sides. There have been quite a few good questions and interactions with the press, and not just on the bug.
The exchange on the IC IG firing was classic, that one involved a typical speech/comment posing as a question, but Trump gave the perfect blunt answer. Ditto with the "follow-up". Summarized: I fired him because he had done a terrible job, and it's my decision, not a question of which advisers thought what. Have noted before that most seem never to have seen a press conference. With the exception of the orwellian farces when the non-entity was president, they typically involve lots of challenging questions and some attitude and a few stupid questions. True for pressers below presidential level too. Nature of the business. The crudeness of the hostility and ignorant challenges are indeed at "historic, unprecedented" levels with Trump, but matter of degree, not kind. Ditto with the "coverage". Seems like many people were isolated from the "news" from 2003-2008. Posted by: rhomboid at April 05, 2020 03:54 PM (El6T/) 379

PSA re masks, check out this suggestion of using blue shop towels as the basis for masks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mai-UqdNRi8 Nonwoven fabrics, which Tsai did years of research on to improve medical masks, are made of individual fibers or filaments that are bound together mechanically, thermally or chemically. They are not knit or woven together, like most cotton. Not all nonwoven fabrics are ideal for masks. Wet wipes are made of nonwoven fabric but are too porous, Tsai said. Vacuum bags are also generally made of nonwoven fabric but are not breathable. Tsai recommended using car shop towels as mask material. The towels, available in rolls and often blue in color, would do a better job of filtering droplets than cloth, he said. The material is "very strong," he said. "And it can be washed with soap and water and reused." There are YouTube videos that offer tutorials on using this material. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at April 05, 2020 04:02 PM (YqDXo) 412

What if we were to learn that Trump suppressed scary information re COVID-19 (and the needed federal response) in January to postpone the economic turndown until it could no longer endanger his Senate acquittal? Retweet if you wouldn't be surprised by his making that tradeoff. What if we were to learn that Tribe suppressed eye-opening information re the Mocha Messiah's intellectual gifts, and retroactively praised him to the skies, so that Tribe could feel better about himself for having advanced the cause of a Negro? Hmmm? Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at April 05, 2020 04:04 PM (YqDXo) 418
372 Gotta love how this whole situation has obliterated every progressive would-be policy prescription. This situation has set them back at least a generation.

This is the WaPo 'fact checker'....got that? FACT checker....
@GlennKesslerWP Line from Trump's State of the Union address that did not age well: "Incredibly, the average unemployment rate under my administration is lower than any administration in the history of our country." As we noted in our fact check at the time: "This is worth fact-checking because the average over three years is hardly comparable to a four- or eight-year average for other presidents." Imagine what the average will end up by the conclusion of Trump's term. This is an example of how manipulated stats can backfire on politicians. You shouldn't be comparing yourself to full-term presidents before your term is up. Things can happen that make such claims appear foolish in retrospect. It's also an example of how it's foolhardy for any president to brag about the state of the economy on their watch. They have little to do with broad economic trends, good or bad. Never again. And the closest store of any kind to us, is a Walmart supercenter. Have they all gone to restricting the total number of customers inside? Posted by: Les Kinetic at April 05, 2020 03:40 PM (+fPHo) Costco had a system with channels made from shopping carts. Disney line flashbacks. But have fun. As I funneled toward the entrance spent my time running a used wet wipe over each and every shopping cart handle. Surprising numbers of people noticed and most seemed amused. Lots of masks worn by scrupulous perimeter observers. Crowders not so much. Since I had a short list the line monitors excused me from line and I got to use self checkout kiosk. My wife and I are the definition of high risk. She's on Methotrexate and I have a history of 3 stents. 10 days ago we took advantage of Meijer grocery who has an early opening 7-8am for geriatric and high risk. We all walked in with gloves on, picked out a sanitized cart and did our shopping. It was almost surreal how mannerly and courteous the crowd was. Today we placed a home delivery order with our local Aldi, hoping to get a delivery in the next couple days before we ran out of produce. For less than $10 their staff picked, packed and delivered our 6 bags over 5 miles from the store in less than 2 hours from our order. Meanwhile the staff at our local Amazon distribution center has tested positive. We've not missed a single minute in our regular monthly deliveries through Amazon. Thank you Jesus and everyone who's working through this. Without you, we might already be another statistic.

So far I have not seen the limited entry policy at any of the stores in my AO. And they all seem to have fairly streamlined cleaning policies with the carts and baskets, and they are fairly well stocked with the exception of the usual TP and wipes. All in all, as I've said before, my town is handling all this BS very well.

I signed up with Instacart and will finish my first full week today. It's pretty good money and gets me out of the house. It's interesting to see where the food shortages are. One store will have plenty of eggs but limited chicken. The next store is the opposite. Do your shopping early because the shelves are definitely bare by the evening, although they're restocking during the day. I don't foresee a return to 24-hour stores for a while because the product is not there to buy. And it's not hoarding. People legitimately need to buy more groceries because they're eating all their meals at home now.
Hmm, something good about the quarantine. I can use the plastic bags with impunity. And when I'm shopping an order for someone who wants a lot of organic food, I enjoy substituting higher priced items when the product they want is not available. If they're stupid enough to waste their money on organic, I figure they can afford it. And I also enjoy putting their stuff in as many plastic bags as I can knowing they probably believe in global warming. I guess I'm not a nice person. The lovely Mrs Guevara is a big fan of our Wal-Mart. She orders stuff online, drives through and they place the order in the trunk. No sweat. Posted by: Aviator at April 05, 2020 04:30 PM (2cuLk) Very questionable, given the manifest flakiness of the data, and the inevitable problems with modeling anything, as a model is an abstraction of the reality. Is it an accurate and useful abstraction? In some contexts, yes, maybe. In other contexts, no. Consider a map. It's a representation, an abstraction, of geographical reality. The distance between two geographical points is represented by the distance between two points on the map. So for judging distances as the crow flies, it's a useful abstraction. If, however, we need to traverse that distance on the ground, it may not be a useful abstraction if there's, e.g., a mountain range or ocean along the path. Our present case re modeling corona virus is more like a map from the 16th century, a dodgy representation with a whole section of the map reading "here be monsters."
