Gun Thread: Lockdown - Response to Covid-19 Edition [Weasel]

lockdown pic scaled.jpg

First of all, it's the Chinese Flu, and second of all, the official Gun Thread response is thanks a lot, China. In fact, fuck you China, and the dragon you rode in on. I really appreciate sitting at home on some sort of half-ass lockdown watching the U.S. economy get beaten to shit because of your incompetence. You have disgraced yourselves and brought great shame on your ancestors, Asshoe!

Now, let's get to some gun stuff below, shall we?

A question that comes up from time to time in the comments and in email I receive is:

What Kind of Gun Should I Buy?
It seems like a simple question, but the answer is a little more complicated, and anyone who simply says "buy X" without knowing anything else isn't doing you any favors. In order to make an informed recommendation a little more information is needed; primarily the intended use, and to a lesser degree some information about the shooter. A big strapping guy with large hands who plans to shoot a lot is going to have a different range of options than, say, a petit gal who is looking for something only for self-defense after an initial familiarization. Before we dig in, one fact needs to be emphasized and that's not all guns do everything well. Shotguns, rifles and handguns, depending on the configuration, all have strengths and weaknesses. For example, you don't see a lot of duck hunters outfitting themselves with .22 cal target pistols. Can you kill a duck with a .22 cal target pistol? Sure. Is it the best tool for the job? Nope.

Current headlines are reporting record firearms sales for the month of March. Examples are here, here, and here. What gives? Well, uncertainty for one thing. The threat of social disorder and mayhem is always a great motivator when it comes to people thinking about protecting themselves, their loved ones, and their stuff.

So let's assume that what everyone has on their mind is self-defense and protecting their property which narrows the field down a bit.

Long Guns
So named because they're longer than short guns, this group covers rifles and shotguns. While obviously not practical for concealed carry, a shotgun in 12 ga or 20 ga can make a fine general purpose home defense weapon. Look for something with a barrel length in the 18 inch range, which, when loaded with buckshot, will make a formidable weapon. Although rifles will work in a pinch, they are better left to shooting at longer distances. Because of the high velocity of the rounds, over-penetration can be a concern as the bullets can easily penetrate a person and then the walls of your house, before heading outside to meet your neighbors.

Handguns
I suspect handguns are what most people are thinking of when they decide they need to arm themselves. Depending on where you live, a handgun can be concealed when you go out (a permit is generally required) or kept handy inside your home, for example, in a bedside drawer. Use common sense in securing any weapon if there are youngsters around.

Modern handguns are made in two basic types, revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. On the plus side for revolvers is they are extremely simple to use. Once loaded, it is simply a matter of pointing and pulling the trigger. The downside, if you want to call it that, is they are usually limited to six and sometimes seven rounds. Pistols, on the other hand, generally have a higher ammunition capacity, some with as many as 15 rounds, but their operation is more complicated. Making them ready to fire requires inserting the magazine and loading a round into the chamber and there are often external safeties to deal with. These operations can complicate their use in a high-stress situation, especially if a shooter hasn't trained for such.

Please Just Shut Up and Give Us a Recommendation
Don't get snippy! For a first time gun owner, someone who has little or no experience with firearms who decides one day to arm themselves, I'd recommend a revolver in .38 Special. For decades this cartridge was the standard for police sidearms, and with self-defense ammunition it has plenty of stopping power. As I mentioned above, revolvers are completely safe until you start pulling the trigger. You can tell instantly if it's loaded, they are utterly reliable, there is nothing to jam, and cleaning and maintenance is simple. If you are going to buy one gun and stick it in a drawer and forget about it, you want a revolver.

It pains me somewhat to write that last sentence, but I'm enough of a realist to know that happens a lot. I firmly believe every gun owner should become familiar with the operation of every weapon they own, and then periodically take it to the range to maintain at least some basic level of proficiency with it. This doesn't mean you have to go all nutty and spend your life at the gun range, but you owe it to yourself and the rest of the world to know what in the hell you're doing with the deadly weapon in your hands. For those perspective purchasers that fit into this category, please, please, please make the effort to learn basic gun handling safety and marksmanship. If you don't know what you're doing, we're all better off without you owning a gun.

What better way is there to spend your time in lockdown than with a Jerry Miculek instructional video? Well, a WeaselAcres video is of course better, but I mean what normal videos are better? None! Here "Jer" discusses and demonstrates speed and accuracy.

This guy makes all sorts of videos and examines everday stuff from an engineering perspective through the use of slow-motion photography. I've enjoyed all the ones I've watched so far and this is no exception!

Last week our pal CK mentioned a planned trip into the Utah desert to find a place to shoot, and here's a report.

The desert exploration is a success. I've really enjoyed exploring all the BLM and Forest Service land around here. I ran river trips all over the west for 20 years and it's like the good old days. I love wandering around in the sticks. As I was driving out I80 I noticed that the DWR range had reopened so I continued to Dell (about 2/3 of the way between Salt Lake and Wendover), found a nice spot and had a nice shoot. On the way home I stopped at the DWR range and shot some more. Utah is a nice place to shoot. I should be skiing 5 days and shooting on Saturdays but that's on hold so shooting a couple or 3 days is nice.

The western United States is one of my favorite places to shoot. In the desert the air is clear and with such low humidity, the conditions can be just about perfect for long range shooting. I am really, really envious! How about you all - do you have public lands available for shooting?

As many of you know, I'm a big plan of plinking, or target shooting just for fun and not worrying about scores or making super-teensy groups. Recently, our pal Recreant sent an email describing the same thing.

At the end of your gun thread you always ask if we've been to the range lately. We live in the country so the range is our backyard. I like to plink. I chase cans down the driveway. I put so many holes in a can I can't tell whether or not I'm hitting it. I hang a can from a tree branch by the pull-tab and shoot it until it falls off. The "ball and chain" mocked me as a slayer of cans so I bought a spinner target from Amazon. A .22 LR makes that sucker spin, but a .45 ACP really makes it dance! I have a S & W Victory, a Taurus TX 22 and my trusty Ruger 10/22. I shoot my brother's old Marlin .22 "Autoloader" occasionally, but its a bitch to clean as there's no feature to keep the bolt open.

I'd be interested to know what the other gun morons do in their backyard (keep it clean guys and gals).

Well how about it? Sounds like Recreant has the ideal setup with a range in the backyard. For those of you living in the country, what sort of setup do you have?

10 Revolvers CAN malfunction. I don't think it's common but it does happen, and when it does you're fucked if it locks up the cylinder. At least with a pistol you can clear things like FTFs and FTEs without having to go to a gunsmith. You hope that won't happen in any event, because seconds count.

17 Funny thing, even lo 4 on decades after constant training with small arms, my first 3 shots are my most accurate.
I can go straight up and hit the center ring with my 45ACP or my 5.7 at 40' and each successive shot is usually off to the lower right. Still in the lethal areas but aggravatingly off center.
I think I know why, I mean besides aging problems with vision. But want to hear others suggestions.

19 ranges are closed here in #Failifornia, and i'm not sure if there are any federal lands nearby that are open for shooting...

besides, someone would have a shit hemorrhage at the sound of gun fire, call the cops, and they would undoubtedly overreact, no matter how legal it was, because of course they would.

we've got a slienced 22cal Benjamin air rifle w/scope, but i have to find the scuba tank to recharge it from. i'm not sure, but it may be behind the "pile o'ammo", which means i'm not accessing it soon.

there is also a CO2 pistol, which isn't that accurate, and a full auto CO2 rifle that has never been out of the box... yet.

hmmmmmn.... i think i need to rectify that soon.

As you fire the weapon it tends to get lower, you are dropping your head to follow weapon and thus are starting to shoot low and off. Keep your head up, keep your eye on the target, bring the weapon back up to your eye, NOT your eye down to the weapon.

31 Massachusetts shut down all licensing, including renewals. A licensed is required for lawful simple possession in MA. Possession with an expired license is a crime, so they've are minting new criminals every day now for people unable to renew.

The state shut down all commercial FFL's and ranges as 'non-essential' after initially designating them essential. Our cuck Rino governor bent over for the tyrant Karen AG. Local police have also been harassing private clubs to shut down even though they have zero legal authority to do so.

The state also shut down the online transfer portal making impossible to conduct private sales lawfully.

Oh and for shits & giggles all online training courses, including LEOUSA courses were ordered shut down by the Mass State Police, because they don't want people to even be able to take an online safety course at this point.

The 2A in MA is meaningless now because of all this fuckery and if the DoJ Civil Rights Division had any balls a good number of officials in MA would be prosecuted under 18 U.S. Code 242.Deprivation of rights under color of law.

Talked to the sales gal and asked her if they had a lot of first time buyers during the great gun rush of 2020. She said yeah, and when I asked her how surprised they were that they had to fill out the form and wait, she said all of them. Works for me.

Took my CZ P-07 and the Taurus TX-22 and a bucket of copper washed .22 LR I bought from Academy just before the panic buying started. Unlike the other bucket of soft lead .22's, these copper washed 36 grain HP fed and fired no problem. But the odd thing is....I saw several rounds hit the paper SIDEWAYS at 7 yards, out of a 4" pistol barrel. I can't recall ever seeing that before.

The sights on the TX-22 are still off and I need to get some eyeglass repair kits to adjust the tiny ass rear sight screws. But I'm pretty happy with how well the gun functions. I still prefer the Kadet adapter on my CZ, for accuracy and reliability.

65 Thanks for another gun thread Weasel. I liked the video on the cannon shoot.

They did a cannon shoot against a water-filled 55 gallon drum at my Hunter Safety class (circa 1980). A great way to get antsy teenage boys to pay attention to the instructors.

They also did a race to cut a 2x4. An AR15 versus 4 guys shooting black powder (I think 50 cal balls). The black powder guys won. The AR15 velocity was so high at that range the holes almost healed after each shot.

Good times!

70 I hate to disagree with Weasel, but I honestly gotta say I'd rather teach a new user how to use a Glock/M&P/XD9/Etc polymer striker fired automatic.

Teaching a new shooter to use a striker fired 9mm automatic isn't much harder than teaching them how to load and reload and accurately shoot a .38 revolver.

And my sister just gifted me her late husband's .12 gauge and and a double barrel .20 gauge shotgun. Now I have 2 .12 gauge shotguns, but I only have about 100 rounds of shot and 40 rounds of slugs. 77 Took both of my Egyptian Rasheeds out to distance this week.

The rear sights are labeled in their language, so I had to look up "100" in Egyptian and figured it out from there....

These carbines are actually marked "Made in the U.A.R" which was the short lived United Arab Republic between Egypt and Syria from 1958 to 1961. Socialists gotta Social.

Now for the good part. These carbines use the same type of sight as the AKM. Both proved to be very accurate out to 600 yards. From 150-250-350-400-500-600 yards it was very easy to adjust the rear slider and pound the steel target two or three times in a row with no issues with off the shelf ammo, old Norinco 7.62 x 39 mm in the old yellow boxes and some mystery Russian stuff on stripper clips.

Sweet shooters. Who would have guessed but I gotta give the Egyptians credit for producing a nice weapon.

86 To back up Weasel's piece on advising first time gun buyers. Assume nothing.

I've mentioned in the past where I helped some very petite young women, early 20s, on handgun use and purchase. Did they end up with little semi autos or 22lr revolvers? Nope. They preferred shooting a chunky DA revolver in 44 special and purchased a GP100 in 357 magnum. The guns just about outweighed them. And the girl with the GP100 was damn accurate, even with rapid fire drills.

87 Good evening, Horde!

I am happy to report the acquisition of a fine piece.

S&W Model 66-1, 4" barrel, in pristine condition. I think the original owner put maybe a cylinder of ammo through it. Original box and documents (including 4473). Manufactured in 1978 and purchased hearly Jan 1979. I believe the revolver sat in its box on a shelf in a closet lo these many years.

The box is even in excellent condition. No handling marks, no powder residue on the face of the cylinder. Very faint powder line in the top strap, but no cut can be felt by my fingernail.

Pics next week. Not sure when I can get a chance to shoot it. Handles nicely!

93 How many people do you have in your household unit big enough/old enough to handle firearms proficiently? Let's say 2 which is what we have here. Each of your troops should have a tactical shotgun (Mossberg 590), a battle rifle (AR15), and a handgun (like a G17). Plus a .357 double action revolver and an AK. The ammo allowance is a minimum of 1K for each firearm so that's 10K rounds assorted. See where we're going here? Defending your home is serious business enough and we have not even talked about outside maneuver.

Shades of the SCOAMF there is a run on ammo and reloading supplies. I use Berry's a lot, and their heavier offerings are all sold out.
Has anybody else notice a behavior in 9mm where lighter rounds, 124g and lower, tumble rather than spiral? Happens to me with factory rounds and reloads on several non-canoe accident survivors.

It isn't quantity; it's about proficiency.

that said, if you know what you have, and you've used them, then you're ahead of a lot of people in this country. Especially the yahoos that ran out and just had to buy a gun, never mind they probably have very little idea how to use their purchase.

Thanks!

Interesting how I came by it. Several months ago, Son came across it and called me about it. He does call every so often for firearms advice. He told me the condition and price and I advised him to jump on it, so he did.

This morning, he called to say he was going to drop by to visit. He lives an hour or so south of us, but was coming up to purchase a couple of H&R single shots - a 10 Ga shotgun and a 22 Hornet. Fellow he was dealing with is a S&W fan and the two of them got to talking . . .

Son felt it was too nice a piece to just shoot for fun (I disagee. Besides, it's called a "Combat Magnum") and he's not into collecting S&W's, so he was wanting to sell the Model 66 I told him to buy. He asked advice on pricing, etc.

I finally told him, "If he doesn't want to meet your price, heck, I'd love to buy it myself."

He said, "Sold, Dad" and just wanted what he paid for it, which was a very nice price.

133 I went looking for a project gun yesterday, and came up with a classic American sock drawer gun, an Iver Johnson Cadet, .32 SW long. These were made from the 60s to the end of the trail for IJ in the late 80's early 90's (at least in Fitchburg, MA). This didn't need too much, having just a few rust freckles. It appears to have had the usual five to ten rounds run through it and thrown in a drawer, not even having any flash on the front of the cylinder. What it needs, and it functions fine without it, is the loading gate and screw. I Imagine the proud owner in the sixties just had to take the thing off, dropped the screw in the shag carpet, and lost track of the loading gate. I went to Numrich, and they have the gate and screw, but the Governor has them closed, thank you. Anyway, I took it over to the levee, ran twenty rounds through it (came with a box and a half), and remembered 32s are fun to shoot.

if somebody is going to wander down the road to having too many guns in too many calibers then maybe.

154 I don't know if this means anything or has significance but on a couple of gun forums there have been more than usual the number of questions about getting SA revolvers. This is mostly for fun plinking. The questioner may be experienced with autos or long guns but not SAs.

One poster had a choice of a Ruger Blackhawk in 30 Carbine, 357, or 41 magnum and wanted suggestions for the caliber and why. I was pleased, and surprised, when most pushed the 41 magnum. Other questions concerned getting started with cap and ball percussion revolvers. I can think of many reasons to go with SA revolvers but don't know what's prompting greater interest.

Just an observation.

Just want to point out that if you're also planning for the burning times, when ammo may be hard to come by, .38 Special will fit in a .357 Magnum(or so I've been told). So if you have a .357 Mag, there are two calibers that will fit, and it's a good self defense revolver.

Bill Gates (of Event 201 and major donor to the WHO fame... among other things...).
===

Then a few seconds later, at 33:45, Gates drops another bomb:

We don't want to have a lot of recovered people [ ... ] To be clear, we're trying --- through the shut-down in the United States --- to not get to one percent of the population infected. We're well below that today, but with exponentiation, you could get past that three million [people or approximately one percent of the U.S. population being infected with COVID-19 and the vast majority recovering]. I believe we will be able to avoid that with having this economic pain."

It appears that rather than let the population be exposed to the virus and most develop antibodies that give them natural, long-lasting immunity to COVID-19, Gates and his colleagues far prefer to create a vast, hugely expensive, new system of manufacturing and selling billions of test kits, and in parallel very quickly developing and selling billions of antivirals and vaccines.

And then, when the virus comes back again a few months later and most of the population is unexposed and therefore vulnerable, selling billions more test kits and medical interventions.

Right after that, at 34:14, Gates talked about how he sees things rolling out from there.

Eventually what we'll have to have is certificates of who's a recovered person, who's a vaccinated person [ ... ] Because you don't want people moving around the world where you'll have some countries that won't have it under control, sadly. You don't want to completely block off the ability for people to go there and come back and move around. So eventually there will be this digital immunity proof that will help facilitate the global reopening up."

It is sometimes worse with a revolver but sure.

The thing is, if you are new to guns, would you rather have the mag depth of a revolver or a semi auto?

Would you rather have to train to speed reload a revolver or a semi auto?

Going with the revolver is good if you are interested in starting from scratch and going to dojo master, however, if you need to get up to speed for home defense fast get the semi-auto.

Heh. The thing that goes round!

Look up concentricity gauge.

Another thing that can happen with seating runout (bullet in the bore and not pointed exactly down the bore's centerline) is bullet deformation.

There's a lot of force kicking that bullet in the butt and things aren't line up. It's worst with soft cast bullets, but it can happen to a jacketed one.

So center of gravity is not on the center of rotation, until the bullet leaves the muzzle. Along with yaw, the bullet makes a lateral jump as the center of rotation moves to the center of gravity.

Won't make a lot of difference at short ranges, but it will mess you up at long range.

199 192 Weasel, another advantage to revolvers for the night stand or dresser drawer is spring compression, or lack thereof. I know it isn't a problem anymore with modern metallurgy, but there's always the chance. Wolf sells a lot of replacement springs, and not just for trigger jobs.

one shot. What should it be? With that .38 special you better hope to

The right answer is NOT caliber based, it is user based.
The right weapon is the one the shooter and deploy quickly and with accuracy. A .45 hole in the door frame is far less efficient than a .22 hole in the middle of the intruders chest and forehead.

I swear I do tire of the caliber wars.

212 More with the revolver thing

I have had some of my very good friends who insist they are conservative get something of an education recently.

They have retreated to their homes or fortresses and decided to buy guns. They have found that there are background checks and you do not just get to walk in and walk out with an armory.

fun times, laughs for everybody.

Anyway, some of them have been trying to find good stuff but there is nothing to be had so they are buying whatever they have.

some have started with a revolver, then found a semi auto, then found a shotgun.

They have no experience with any of these and it is very unlikely that they are going to be qualified with any of them.

However, the thing that they are most likely to find useful and use in some way to defend their home is the semi-auto handgun.

I guess I don't need to go over the whole story; The summary is that I've added a stack of sandbags with a concrete slab behind, and some tarps above and below to keep sand in and water out. I'm interested to see how much lead the sandbags will be able to handle.

Based on what?

Look, I own many, many autoloaders. I even built one out of spare parts!

Autoloaders have a friend in me.

But I started my odyssey with a revolver, and it is a great way to get into shooting.

What's more, revolvers are complimentary. Let me give you a very basic example.

Let us say you want to shoot on some private land. Nothing special, nothing elaborate, just a stump and a target.

An autoloader is going to dump brass *all over the place*. Then you either get to pick it up on hands and knees, deal with a ground cloth or have it get caught in the mower, etc.

Revolvers? No problem.

They are simple, effective and a great foundation upon which to build a larger collection.

247 I agree with the 38 revolver recommendation.

I might suggest a 357, actually, and that the newbie use 38 cowboy ammo for practice, and 38+P for self-defense, if it's going to be a nightstand gun.

Bigger gun, easier to control; and if it has a 4" or 6" barrel, that 38+P becomes a lot more effective.

I carry a 38 revolver, because I know I don't get to the range as often as I should, and no matter how bad my form, it's going to go kaboom every time I pull the trigger.

252 Clear answer: buy one of each. Or two. Try them all out, see what works best.

But often - I hope in this case it happens - first gun purchase is a gateway drug to the full pathology.

If I could get grenade launchers or field artillery, or especially a 20mm Oerlikon or 23mm ZSU (mounted on a Japanese truck, so, technically, a "technical", in 3rd World warfare parlance), I'd enjoy those.

And let's not forget mines, mostly claymores and such. Though yuuuge naval mines have always fascinated me - but I can't think, right off, of a good use I'd have for them.

Depends.

If you are going for a light carry weapon, .38 special is fine. The extra weight needed to shoot .357 combined with the fury of firing magnums through a small frame make it less than ideal.

But...

If you go in for a full sized (4+ inch barrel) then go magnum or go home.

In fact, I'd go all-in on the six-inch barrel, which will put most wonder 9s to shame at the range.

You got that right. And the Russian army will tell you so from very painful first hand experience. The Chechians employed the 22LR to great effect for close range sniping. The already quiet round could be quite effectively silenced with a simple plastic soda bottle making it near impossible to know where the shot came from and the wounds were still quite effective.

Some of the teams I worked with back in my uniformed and post service days always had a 22LR weapon on them. A fantastic point contact dispatch weapon without waking the whole neighborhood. Just sayin.

It is also good to be mindful of how loud a big caliber weapon is if fired from inside your home. Will you be able to hear your family members or any other intruders *after* you've fired your big gun in your hallway?

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at April 05, 2020 08:18 PM (cfSRQ)

If you're interested in "magnum" loads for less than a 45 on a short barrel, just get the 45...

The nice thing about the 38 was the six incher, the standard round was great for that barrel and accuracy was decent, if not up to the 9MM, which I fired at the end of my career in the Navy and found to be a great weapon for putting rounds on target.

277 Then get a 20ga or .410. Both effective weapons.

My point is not a caliber pissing contest, but solely practicality. In a stressful I doubt my ability to place a shot. Lots of shot increase the probability of a hit.

This is the logic the Navy and Army struggled with, but most of it had to do with enemy distance typical in fighting...the 45 was meant for close quarters, of course, and stopping power, the 9MM was meant for accuracy on target, which had its own stopping power to be sure. If you've been in close quarters, as my Dad was, with the enemy, you felt a lot more confident that you could stop the enemy's advance with a "John Wayner" than a pea shooter, so changing that mind set was something the military struggled to reverse in my later years.

This friend, more than anything, wanted to go to a range and shoot an AR-15. She had served in the German Army, but she had not only never shot one during training or her 'career', she'd never even carried one. Apparently they had a few for the trainees, and some old Mausers to be carried around, but 50% of the trainees were issued sticks in lieu of either of those.

That would not be a particularly hard wish to grant here, but being a Karen, she had no idea of even where to begin.

I imagined that gap named Fulda growing wider and wider during the telling of the story.

It's similar to the.223/5.56 situation. SAAMI spec vs. NATO spec. At the extreme ends of the pressure and size tolerances, one is slightly out of range for the other. So if you were to get ahold of the hottest possible in-spec example of one, it could, in theory, be unsafe in the other. But this is all gun geek sophistry. In the real world, they are safely interchangeable.

334 Hmmmm.. I don't know that it's ever come up with the
first time shooters I've taken to the range. I usually have them dry
fire first, and the trigger pull on DA revolvers is something like 6 or 7
pounds, so not huge.

Posted by: Weasel at April 05, 2020 08:36 PM (jUqIO)

---
One thing I like about revolvers, especially for self-defense, is the deliberate way you can use them.

Most of the time I practice, I do so in single-action. This not only makes the trigger easier, but it forces me to slow down, concentrate, focus.

It forces that extra moment of contemplation, so you don't just jerk the trigger and send a shot who-knows-where.

Over the last couple of threads I've seen people talking about "needing" extra rounds because they aren't sure they will be accurate.

I shudder. Where are those bullets going to go? Sure, if you're being swarmed by whirling Dervishes, ammo may be an issue, but mag-dumping 15+ rounds while under stress seems bad.

Seems to me that I want every shot to count and that the risk profile is heavily on the side of shooting too soon rather than too late.

A spoon can be lethal if you know how to use it right...my Dad told me something I never forgot: "10% of war is what your weapon can do if used correctly, the rest is in your head..."

Meaning, they gave soldiers massive firearms so they felt confident they could stop the enemy, even if a spoon might have worked if used by Bruce Lee...

Oh yes we will quite agree on the great benefit of large capacity magazines and mag fed weapons, meaning yes I greatly prefer a Semi Auto pistol over a revolver!

My personal first hand experience and first person observation is that if a surprise conflict erupts on you, even most hard core operators will be hard pressed to hit anything but air with their first shots, so if you aren't... Those will be mostly for the benefit of letting your adversary know that you are armed and dead serious and now would be the best time for them to be dropping their head and getting the F' away.
That is why we focused so hard on our opening shots and instinctive shooting and why even now nearly 40 yrs later my first shots are usually my best shots... when I'm calm.
Hit me with a full shot of adrenaline, sleepy eyes and a dark house and my opening shots will likely need several more following shots to get the job done. (not that I'm suggesting shooting anything while in that situation, but sometimes choices are made for us). So yes to preferring an auto pistol since I can load a new mag while blind.

If my FN 5.7 wasn't so damn loud, I'd prolly consider it the perfect house gun. Especially with the fragmenting target round that wont go through the plaster walls. It gives me 30 rounds per mag to get it right.

In SE Wisconsin, (Eagle), the State owns the McMiller range. Very nice facility with ranges from 50 feet out to 300 yards, plus shotgun (trap) and bow-and-arrow (!) with target vinyl Bambis set up on a pathway through the woods.
Also sells ammo and (last time I was there) had a dining area set up indoors for BYO chow. Saturdays are usually busy especially in the run-up to deer hunting season, but wait times are almost always less than 30 minutes.

381 You know - if I was John Wick - I guess I'd only need a Derringer. Or a pool cue. Maybe a stick half as long as a pool cue. Or a rope about that long - just to make it sporting.

And I could enjoy the moment, calm and cool and collectively, while I analyzed the threat vectors, calculated my odds, enjoyed the moment like a bored Mack Bolan roused from a deadly slumber. Then, once the bogey was cashiered with surgeon-like precision, I could shake off my manly sweat, put April's ankles around her ears where they belong, and maybe make Johnny some waffles in the morning. You know - if it suited me.

But, until then, I think I'm going to settle on grabbing something that slings a great big cloud of lead - and something that shoots smaller, tighter wads of lead. And the more the better for both of 'em. Of course, I might keep a third lead projector in the nightstand that's kind of simple to use and sorta' in between.

But that's just me. I'm no Mack Bolan or John Wick.

386 Simmunition would price too many out of shooting in an action bay.

I'm scheduled to be up at The Ranch, maybe a week before all this lock down officially ends. I'll make a phone call to confirm or shift the date.

The pistol bay there can be significantly improved, making it safe for Run&Gun opportunities.

What we *will* need though for Run & Gun, is some manifestly WELL qualified and experienced Range Safety Officers, to stay right on the heels of each and every shooter throughout the run.

Takes some balls to reach out from behind, to a going shooter with a hot gun, and do the emergency clampdown on a run in the midst of going sideways.

But, that's what it takes, that's how it's done.

That, and good walk throughs and safety briefings, first.

Run & Gun can be all kinds of fun, but for those who've never shot beyond the "Square Range" format, it can be more than a bit intimidating.

Let's keep it light, let's keep it fun.

Let's keep it SAFE.

Just enough challenge in the stages to be interesting. Not so challenging as to be a distraction, in and of themselves.

419 This is the logic the Navy and Army struggled with,
but most of it had to do with enemy distance typical in fighting...the
45 was meant for close quarters, of course, and stopping power, the 9MM
was meant for accuracy on target, which had its own stopping power to be
sure. If you've been in close quarters, as my Dad was, with the enemy,
you felt a lot more confident that you could stop the enemy's advance
with a "John Wayner" than a pea shooter, so changing that mind set was
something the military struggled to reverse in my later years.

Posted by: Boswell
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Actually the quote you pulled is from me. The previous poster messed up when he edited in his comment to my post.

The reason the military went to the .45 in the first place was about stopping power. But that is an entirely different discussion than when talking to civilians. Military use is going to be young people of good health who will be expected train extensively to attain proficiency and to have a predilection to fire their weapon. Thus the .38 Long Colt was replaced with the .45 because accuracy was considered to be about on par and stopping power plus the ability to reload with a mag meant it was magnitudes better.
the 9mm replaced the .45 because of a number of reasons but mostly because of the extra rounds per ma and the ability to carry more rounds into the field. It was also kinder and cheaper to shoot to proficiency.
My contacts in the military are telling me that there is interest in looking for a little more umph once more.
But again, what is right for the service member who shoots Gov ammo on a constant basis to develop proficiency is different than what would be right for any one of the ettes or non military Morons.
I would near gleefully go for my 1911, that I carried while in service, but I would shudder to think of my wife doing so. She's probably shoot the dog.

432 I'm likely to complete all my reloading tasks during this thing. Ammo cans will be full, will even have primed 30-06 brass for next round with that. Really should disassemble and clean one of the M1 carbines, or give the repro one another coat of BLO for nice walnut stock. Think I did the 1911 not long ago.

CZ-83, still a bit leery. Pin holding the extractor seemed frozen when I first got it and tried to at least disassemble the slide, and the intertoobs have tales of woe about re-assembling the trigger assembly if you do a 100% take-down. It's a surplus gun.

I now have evolved to careful, as opposed to manic, cleaning of my guns - to maintain functionality, or prevent any kind of damage - otherwise, wipe it down and keep the bore clear.

469 Well, literally 50% of every single person currently testing positive right now would have to die to get anywhere near the CDC's last week prediction of 100K to 250K dead in the US. The death rate is less than 10K out of a tiny subset of Americans who have been actually tested and came back positive - after two weeks of being at home anyway ...you can't even get a test at all for COVID-19 in New York unless you visit a clinic and are considered life threatened...ie over 103 fever and have life threatening conditions - so 90% of everyone going to the doctor right now in NY with an upper respiratory infection and fever gets sent home with no testing at all...

Bottom line, you'll never get tested for COVID-19 in New York unless you're going to hospitalized. So there is absolutely no way to know if you'll ever get this and just move on.

490 Weasel. Your product on the Gun Thread remains consistently excellent.

There are hundreds of established gun-writers out there, many having been publishing for decades. Big names in the print industry, going back to pre-internet days.

There are thousands of aspiring "wanna-bees", with their various blog and you tube platforms.

At this point though?

You're at most, a half-step behind the Big Names in the gunblog world.

And closing fast.

Couldn't happen for a better Weasel, I'd say!

492 Weasel,

Thanks, as always, for the thread. Always a good time. Any thread that involves Ruger Old Army revolvers is a success. Have fun down at the Farm.

We'll take that action!

Now we just have to make sure *every* fatality is marked as COVID-19 from now on.

499 As if anyone is going to read this, the bestest, fastest, most comfortable holster for almost any modern automatic is the Azulagunholsters dot com cross draw seated holster in leather. $49.00 delivered.

Fits a 1-1/2" belt. It's outside the belt, but when worn under a loose shirt (especially if you have a belly) it's invisible. And available. It's right there. You can touch the gun through the shirt to hold it, if necessary.

No thumb snap. It simply sits there, in its leather pocket, always ready. And it's leather, meaning it softens and conforms with age. But it is still easy to reholster; the pocket is reinforced so it doesn't collapse.

You can cross draw from seated position or standing.

And it can take a really large gun, if you want. Even an FN FNX45, which is 15 rounds of delicious .45ACP.

502 Milled out two receivers today, not including "fixing" the one I f'ed up. Sending it to a local place, where they can re-aluminize (is that a word?) the area that received some overly enthusiastic milling. I get one of these built and I'm gonna brag, brag, brag

504 The demorats worked far in advance of this flu crisis to capitalize on it when it finally happened. Demanding the consolidation of schools (people concentrations), demanding the borders be open to bring eradicated sicknesses back to America, demanding China get critical industries moved to China, we would then be dependant on, and the economic weakening of America. Not forgetting energy dependence demorats have forced on America over many decades, causing expensive shortages of energy and high prices, like Obama insisting America had to have $10 a gallon gasoline. Dermorats have their fingerprints all over this invented crisis, oh yeah, they say blame President Trump, while demorats delayed actions as long as they could get away with-Pelosi.

506 One good thing about living in a place where carrying a firearm is verboten: the cops that stop you while driving never even think about asking if you are armed.

Some background: My home has only secure garage parking for two vehicles. As a result, I bought a factory unit about 15 minutes away to store stuff (like extra cars) and work on stuff (like cars). Since I was on a limited (wife-controlled) budget, I bought in a somewhat dodgy area. During the day it's fine, but night time is when the riff-raff are about, and coincidentally, when I have spare time to work on things (like cars). I have been accosted by undesirables a couple of times when leaving the workshop to head home late at night, so I habitually carry a sidearm. Usually it's a Glock 35 in .40 S&W, stuffed full of Remington hollow-points. Everything about carrying it is illegal, down to the 15 round magazine in my 10-round maximum police state.

Back to the story:
I had just finished up an item on the wish-list of things to be done and, seeing that it was 2 AM, washed up, packed up, locked up, and headed home.

Onto the highway, heading home, and the local politzei have set up a "booze bus", where EVERYBODY on the road is stopped and breath-tested for alcohol. At this time, and in this place, with Wuhan flu about, I count SEVEN police officers, FIVE police cars, and the central bus - all to stop ONE car; mine.

I stop as directed, and the officer asks all sorts of intrusive questions, like:
How are you?
Having a pleasant evening?
Are you enjoying the cooler weather?

Having regard to the judicial time-bomb at my hip, I am less curt than usual:
Fine.
Yes.
Yes.
Please identify yourself, and tell me why I am being stopped.

I am Constable SoandSo. I am stopping you under "Random Drink Drive Prevention Law". I require a breath sample ...blahblahblah.

I blow into the machine, the test is negative for alcohol, I demand the disposable mouth piece, and I drive on.

Consequences of being caught carrying a firearm: extremely negative.
RISK of being caught carrying a firearm: extremely LOW, because the police don't think to ask.
