The Morning Report - 4/3/20

futurdetr.jpg

Good morning, kids. Friday and another day of America held hostage by Leftist lies, Chi-Com damned lies and statistics as the lifeblood of our nation, what was the greatest economic miracle of all time, drains from its slit wrists. I was talking to a friend last night who asked if I watched the President's presser (I hadn't) and he was shocked at his seemingly fatigued demeanor and tone, which is in sharp contrast to his usual energy and ebullience. The press has been playing this up, not so subtly hinting that he seems defeated by all of this. I would not go that far, and neither did Rush Limbaugh on his show when he attributed the President's bearing as natural concern for the well being of the citizenry.

While this is certainly the case, my gut tells me that I think he realizes he may have made a blunder in relying on the "experts" and their models in going along with the shuttering of our economy. All of the assaults he has had to endure over the past four years were political in nature. But this one is different; it's a nebulous disease that he cannot dispatch with a Twitter storm of truth bombs. With the lives of nearly 320 million people in his hands, he's forced into a corner. Yet, the situation very closely parallels the one he was in during the transition period after the election up until and beyond the 2018 midterms. As an outsider, Trump relied on people inside DC to staff the administration and thought, perhaps naively, that everyone had the best interests of the nation at heart whatever their political bent may be. We, and he, know how that turned out.

And here we all are again, relying on so-called "experts" and computer models to predict how, where, for how long and how lethally a virus is going to strike, when we're not even sure just how deadly to the entire population it is in the first place. In any case, the problem with computer models is that they are only as good as the data put in to them. If that doesn't remind you of something, here's a hint: Global Warming.

Circling back to Trump, I think he now realizes he's made a mistake by allowing himself to be driven solely by numbers that are being given to him by people who, if history and the nature of DC teach us anything, do not have his best interests at heart. And that's being charitable. Is it too late for him to backtrack? Maybe. But, given the fact that putting millions of people out of work and destroying their economic security for years to come is clearly (to me anyway) much more deleterious to our collective health than this Pox Oriental, I cannot see him allowing this madness to go on much longer.

No doubt, it would be a massive political gamble for him to say "look, the situation on the ground compared to the projections just don't add up" and then call for a phased in lifting of the quarantines and closures until either we're clear of the danger or actual confirmed deaths from Asiatic Lung AIDS spike. I am still not convinced that this particular virus will cause the massive amounts of deaths predicted but for arguments sake, let's say Trump gives the all clear and they spike; I still believe tragic as the loss of life may be (and is, as I am not a heartless bastard), it still pales in comparison to the carnage and suffering that will result from the quarantine.

No doubt the Democrat-Media Complex will accuse Trump of being literally Hitler-Hitler (he's already merely Hitler in their eyes as it is) if just one person gets so much as a runny nose. Hell, Malig-Nancy Pelosi and Schiff-for-Brains are already firing up the Shampeachment Express which will sabotage and tie the hands of the sane adults in the room trying to alleviate the situation. So, what does Trump have to lose, really?

I think the choice is lift all social distancing guidelines with the exception of those already confirmed infected and sick, the elderly and anyone else whose cardio-pulmonary and immune systems are compromised and get America back to work. The problem is the governors and mayors, especially in Democrat-controlled areas and most especially New York State and City. Let's face it; New York City is still America's and the world's economic Mecca. If you think the Democrats, who by destroying the economy can both get rid of Trump and use the economic and societal collapse to capture the nation, are going to let that opportunity slip through their fingers, you've been eating the bad fish tank cleaner.

We've already seen the Democrats true colors in the wake of 9/11. We could be hit with Clinton bought-and-paid-for Chinese MIRV'd warheads and the first thing they'd do is toss the Constitution into the fire while preserving The 1619 Project and Howard Zinn's filthy tripe with which to rebuild upon the ruins. Given the success of the MAGA agenda from January 2017 until late February 2020, this pandemic - that is the panic surrounding the pandemic - is perhaps the Left's last best chance to overthrow the nation. That means it is President Trump's last best chance to thwart them, restore sanity and put us back on track.

Tick-tock-tick-tock...

So far every single model the "experts" have pushed out have been wrong. Some have been off by as much as a factor of ten.

The model that Dr. Fauci is currently using, the one they had the big graph displayed at the White House yeterday said there would be over 120,000 hospitalized with the virus by today.

The actual number is 31,142 confirmed virus cases hospitalized today.

When you are that far off you need to take a step back and toss your models out and start over.

55 Vermont Government Orders Big Box Retailers to Stop Selling "Non-Essential" Goods
+++++++++++++
What possible justification? What is "essential?" Why shouldn't I dual-use a necessary trip?

If I have to go to Home Depot to get cleaning supplies or some electrical wire to repair my home, why can't I buy something like seeds or trowels (probably not essential)? What if I am locked up at home and bored to tears and want to build some furniture and need some lumber? What if I have a victory garden that I use to eat and need some fertilizer?

If I have to go to Best Buy to replace my headset because I have to work from home, why shouldn't I be able to buy a new X-Box while I'm at it, should I want to?

This is becoming dangerous, totalitarian, economy-wrecking self-parody.

He's an expert, and apparently a very good one. Real experts often see only their expertise. For example, be wary of what the person who comes out to investigate a building that burned down calls himself. If he calls himself a "fire investigator" he's going to look for the cause of the fire. If he's an "arson investigator" he's going to look for arson - and will probably find evidence that supports arson as the cause.

As has been said here many times, a tree expert can tell you all about trees, but knows next to nothing about the forest.

87 Where it seems we're headed:
Hearing grumblings among "essential" people about why are we working, if this killer zombie virus plague is about to drop us all dead in the street.
"Essential" workers will start skipping work. Essential business, especially food processors and manufacturers, will have to shut down. And you thought the run on toilet paper was bad!
Somebody is going to have to step up and say, "We have to go back to work. This virus isn't going to kill us all, but what comes next economically -starvation, rioting, general mayhem- might."
The government will try to save face by saying, "Oh, we flattened the curve. All is well! Get back to work!" I expect all this to occur fairly quickly. I think the "essential" businesses are already experiencing employee turmoil.
And we'll never know the extent to which the experts were wrong, or just plain lied to us, because they'll say, "The lockdown worked! It would have been so much worse without us!" You know, just like they do with the War on Poverty.

94 Good analysis, J.J. I have to say that the constant insanity and onslaught on everything good and decent in America by the Left and media (BIRM) is wearing me down -- I have never been this disturbed, distressed, depressed, and pessimistic for our country and future -- so cannot imagine the burden on President Trump.

OTOH, there's nobody else I'd rather have at the helm right now. He appears to be our last, best hope if we are to emerge from this manufactured, media-induced panic/hysteria/insanity in any semblance of our once great nation.

The Left has been wishcasting innumerable "existential crises" over the decades ... and they mean to make that a self-fulfilling prophecy -- good and hard.

That's right, and we don't need more of this. The hospital I worked at tried this as a cost saving mechanism, and the American nurses got stuck with useless "colleagues" who made many errors. The non-English speaking nurses, still fit into the staffing grid as any other RN, and the poor nurses could not even complain of inadequate resources.

The hospital wised up due to patient complaints and stopped the practice. Then they worked on getting promising assistants into RN programs and then moved them into positions. They had people who could do the job, and paid them enough to help them payoff their useless degrees in "art history" and "studies"

Also, why is "states competing" a bad thing? One size does not fit all, and some ideas are better than others.

This is like the Eurocrats calling for "tax harmonization" to avoid tax policy competition between EU countries (e.g., the argument that Ireland's tax policies are unfair to France).

125 Concur with assessments about Fauci. They live their whole lives for this moment, and they love the spotlight, after toiling for decades in unappreciated research. This is their moment, and they want to make the most of it.

After 9/11 I worked with a woman who had a very specific specialty (claimed Ph.D, but didn't have one), who wrote lots of papers and then later claimed that she and her team "saved America." She described a 3" binder of papers written for policy-makers as the proof of her savior status.

127 All of this shut down was based on the logic of winning the lottery for losers-- stacking "ifs" and "maybes" to justify a course

If the virus is super deadly
If the virus is super contagious
If everyone stays stays home
Then
Maybe people won't be infected as fast
Maybe the hospitals won't be overwhelmed
Maybe there will be enough beds
Maybe ventilators will help
Maybe a few more people might live

But the left has already shifted from the big lie--millions will die!!--to the emotional lie--"if it saves one life!!"

Notice how the actual demographics of those hospitalized and dead are hidden?
70%+ already had a serious medical condition
60%+ are over the age of 65

But every death under 40 is a front page screaming headline?

The cattle are whipped up in such fear--no one wants facts, no one wants reason, no one wants calm.

In game guarantee the lefty Nazi screaming "everyone needs to stay the fuck home" is 100% sure the mortality rate is over 90%--if you get it, you're dead.

Why do they keep hoping someone will give it to Trump if they think it's even the ridiculous inflated 3%?

And then when you say, well looks like it's slighter more dangerous than the flu, they scream at you "that still means millions are going to die you fucking Hitler!"

My parents live in the South. Their minimum trip is 1.25 miles because that is the distance to the nearest gas station. The vet is 1.5 miles. The grocery store is 4 miles. Wal-Mart is 7 miles.

People outside of huge city centers often travel at least a mile just to get anywhere (some inner suburbs are denser). And they typically aren't going to use public transit to do it, because outside of very dense areas most people have automobiles.

Have these people never been to a suburb, rural, or semi-rural area?

136 Two things. Turn off all the tracking apps on your phone and get a good ad blocker. If you need GPS turn it on at the time. Google, the big hero who was helping create a coronavirus app, is now providing data to track you. By the way, tracking people against their will is one of the biggest violations of our civil liberties in history. There is no end to it. They are creating a system to track every citizen they can use at will. Just like the "FISA" court, it will be abused and used against you.

Next, they are developing the vaccine here. It should be used in America first. Every other nation has put restrictions on exports of certain good during this time. It works to their people's advantage and our detriment. That's fine, and when we get enough vaccine made to cover our citizens and have excess, we'll let you know. I only say this because Commie Universities like Harvard are already bleating we must have equitable distribution. Thanks, now GFY.

I've got to agree with Jane, this is totally fucked up.

Enhanced unemployment benefits and a program of insufficient small business loans will not get our economy back.

People who retired thinking their portfolios will carry them are waking up to the fact they're royally fucked. Others who put their money into small businesses are going to give up and declare bankruptcy. There is no way to simply turn the economy back on after this long a shutdown.

No company is going to bring back every employee. There are always the ones that companies realize they can live without.

The government is screwing up getting money out to people and that's a short ride to riots in the streets.

In the next few weeks, people will start to realize the scope of the plan we'll need to survive.

216 I have to say I find it very strange the NYC's hospitals are being "overwhelmed" by a few thousand cases of Wuhan Flu. NYC is a city of 8-10 million, and it must have tens of thousands of sick in hospitals every day. Are they sending all the Wuhan Flu cases to just one or 2 hospitals? I grew up around the corner from Jacoby medical center in the Bronx, and its huge, and literally across Morris Park ave is the equally huge Einstein College of Medicine medical complex. A few blocks from those is the Westchester Square Hospital and all around those 3 hospitals are medical clinics, and doctors offices of all types. Now I know not all of the city has so many hospitals in close proximity, but the rest of the city has a lot of hospitals. So something is not adding up. Again, unless they're sending all the cases to just 1 or 2 places. But if they were getting overwhelmed, why not expand to more hospitals?

220 201 Our county will begin formal online education on April 13th. Our social distancing, as of now, is slated to end April 24th. The school district has rounded up 15,000 chromebooks to hand out and ordered 20,000 more. The damn things aren't even slated to arrive until May. So, that tells me they are actually going to close schools for the rest of the year and just don't want to say it yet or they plan on applying for federal grants to cover the cost. It's insanity.

I sense the frustration with the shutdown beginning, but there is going to have to be some radical change in the information going out to actually get us to move off our current trajectory. Every small business in my town is closed, and as things are there is too high a legal risk for any of them to even consider reopening, until they get an official go-ahead.

We're going to learn that economies may be very hard to build, but they can be killed very easily.

We have never in history seems as fast a collapse as is happening right now. Official unemployment numbers lag by a few days; but now we are losing millions of jobs every week. Best estimate is that today, we're at 9.6%; within 2 weeks, we'll blow past 15%; and sometime in May, under current orders, we'll go past 30% unemployment, which is worse than anything this country saw in the middle of the Great Depression.

I don't point this out to just be doomsaying; in just 6 weeks, all of us are going to wake up and wonder "How in the HELL did we let things get THIS bad, THIS fast, and no one ever bothered to mention what we were doing???"

I have said it before, and will say it again - economically, this is an Extinction Level Event. The only way to avoid that is to radically change our current course.

They went through the COVID protocols, and eventually walked me inside for a chest X-ray, that was negative. When the nurse came out to give me the results, I asked her if I was clear of the Chyna virus. Her response? "Oh, we're not doing testing here. Only the sickest of the sick are being tested, even WE (med personnel) aren't getting tested. You may have had it, you may have it. Looked online yesterday and our VFW is eligible for the loan/grant thing and if we bring our bartenders back to work we won't have to repay anything.

Can't think of anything we can have them do other than sit around. We cleaned the ever loving heck out of the place last weekend and we can't open so if we did bring them back all they would do is sit around for their shift.

It's a losing situation for them and us.

Pretty soon I am going to have to start turning stuff off like the Internet, Direct TV, the POS lease and other little things that add up. It will cost some $$$ to turn all of that back on, but right now we are wasting money on stuff we are not using.

If it goes on past the end of April I will cancel our liquor liability policy that will save $500 a month but eventually the cash will run out so we might have to get some money from the SBA just to stay alive. Hopefully we will be able to repay it.

The largest number of people getting tested, by far, is in the 20-44 age range. Know how many people of that age have died of the virus in AZ? ZERO.

Everybody who has died of the virus in AZ, and that's only 32 people at this point, is in the two oldest categories. 2/3 of the deaths are people in the 65+ category.

The media has freaked people out. And the people who are the most freaked out, at least around here, are the people who are least at risk.

Off-label prescriptions have been part of "approved" medical practice for decades if not centuries

BUT, we can't possibly let critically ill (and potentially dying) people try a treatment that hasn't passed an FDA approved and supervised clinical trial.

279 It's completely bizarre. It isn't even "Trump's cure." It's data coming from foreign countries (which is usually the *best* data to a Leftist), notably France and Korea. Trump has talked about everything that might be helpful and worked to clear the road to try it here. Anything with promise, we're doing - regardless of where the idea came from. This whole reaction shows just how (psychologically) pathological they have become.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 03, 2020 08:53 AM (Q8c/L)

It's Didier Raoult's cure. And he started it with SARS, being one of the few docs who kept researching corona cures after the immediate danger subsided.

280 Elder chairman says no we don't take money from the government. The small minority that is against it are the ones saying God will provide. Coincidently, they are also the ones who never put a dime in the offering plate. God will provide, but don't expect me to help. We'll see which way it goes. I am not optimistic.
Posted by: grammie winger at April 03, 2020 08:33 AM (lwiT4)

If I was associated with that Church, I think my decision would be obvious. If the money is not taken, that Church will not survive, and therefore it would be time to leave and look for someplace with a little more of a will to live. Organizations, even Churches, are living things, and some die every day. If you're stuck in one that's chosen death, it's time to go.

281 Tucker Carlson is now lamenting the shutdown severity? Wasn't he stoking the fires of panic a few weeks ago?

Trump is facing the classic crucible of leadership. He screwed up relying on these establishment CDC zombies (I'm wondering if it was Pence who brought them in). This was understandable, as bio-medical issues were not his metier and he wanted to play it safe. But, like some of his other poor appointments, it's time to accept the failure and kick them to the curb. It's not like there aren't other very good, qualified and robustly positive medical people he can't bring in.

Trump was like a landlord who was told by an inspector that his rental unit had some black mold, but couldn't even get to within 10,000% margin of error.

The "expert", whose brother is a building contractor, recommends burning the entire house down "just to be sure".

Trump said: "Ok, I'm fully on board and will sell the idea to the renter, but I don't want to be seen as the one who sets fire to the property."

As soon as the FD approves a medication, it becomes fair game for MDs to use it off label if they believe it's beneficial and the patient is informed of the possible risks. And this is the current rule per the FDA website, so what the donk govs are doing is the shocking part

290 This insanity of trying to funnel money to individuals and businesses via some formula just won't work.

It will take too long and not be enough to help.

Those in large businesses and banks will end up with the cash while everyone else goes broke. The only way to actually reboot the economy is to do a broad based reset that targets those who make the economy work.

The plan I laid out, paying off debt with money from government assets, targets the right people. The rich (for the most part) don't have mortgages, student loans, credit card or consumer debt. Zero these out and do a massive infrastructure program and the economy will straighten itself out.

I am not saying that the individual deaths are not tragic because each one is the end of a human life. I am saying that people die tragically every single day with or without COVID-19. Does this Chinese virus juice the numbers that much?

If the serological antibody surveys reveal that this virus already blew through the world's population in late 2019, then mobs will have morality at their backs if they drag the CCP propagandists and orange-man-bad dead-enders who hyped and then fanned the flames of this panic out into the streets to beat them with sticks. Sympathetic doubt will give people pause.

Well one obvious way is to require self-quarantine for those over 50 years of age only, and to do massive testing, masks, and reasonable distancing for those in the ages of 20 - 50, who could still keep at least some of the economy going. But I can't see any of us in the public having enough influence to get anyone in government to listen to us.

Failing that, I would not be surprised to see the Trump admin adopt some version of Yang's UBI within a month or so. Also, 30 million to 40 million people are going to be losing their health insurance within the next 6 - 8 weeks. This administration is going to *have* to come up with a way to provide Health Insurance to all of these people, or else there are going to be 30 to 40 million votes in November for someone else who will.

they're offering to cover COVID-19 costs for those who have no insurance; but what about all the other health concerns that are still going on every day? Just covering COVID costs is not going to be enough.

And in light of their role to defend and protect USA, they could face nor greater threat to our way of life, liberty and religious/other freedoms. My guess is half would show no or mild symptoms, a few might have higher temps or other distress resolved by the cocktail. Only one or two would die (probably mostly from some other complication).

It's not like they are being exposed to nuclear radiation ... and given the recent deaths from ?? ship collisions (were those another grey zone attack by China, messing with GPS or other interference, idk, that was a theory, maybe it was more affrimative action promotion problems) ... there are other deaths we face from fighting enemies ... a virus study would greatly serve the nation.

Everyone is overlooking one significant point here, Trump did not shut the Country down, the individual State Governors did.

Trump gave his recommendations based on input from his team and individual States are/were free to ignore that advice if they wanted to.

Trump has not issued a single "decree" during any of this mess. All he has done is issue guidelines and declared a State of emergency to activate certain powers that he can use during the crisis.

It's all up to individual States to act on what they think is best for their State or in some cases, overreact like VT and MI did.

Posted by: Mr. Scott (Formerly GWS) at April 03, 2020 09:11 AM (JUOKG)

330 The concern for whether Trump has made a mistake is a legitimate one. But we have to bear two important things in mind: (i) the political fall-out from "riding it out" - with all the resultant deaths - may have been a political disaster for him, even while the economy benefited; and (ii) if Trump has erred, so has every other major and minor international economy.
The second point is hugely important because (assuming, which I do) when Trump flashes the green light, we will still be the most important economy in the world, and our recovery will not only be fueled by our own domestic demand, but by the demand of every other nation.
Trump made the decision he had to make for political survival (and it was probably correct for other reasons), and I think he is right that our recovery will be strong - and not all that far away.

339 "I think the choice is lift all social distancing guidelines with the exception of those already confirmed infected and sick, the elderly and anyone else whose cardio-pulmonary and immune systems are compromised and get America back to work. "

I'm going to have to disagree with you here; Trump can't do that. Here in North Carolina, it's the governor who put the shelter-in-place in effect . If Trump pronounced all social distancing guidelines null and void, the governors would not comply and he'd just look weak and ineffectual. Then the media would crucify him even worse than they do now.

Trump can best use the power of his office as a bully pulpit and as a way to speed vaccination and other treatments, bully the democrats in congress into passing legislation that's helpful for the economy. But the states won't un-shutdown at his command, and the media would pillory him for trying.

I don't know about other states, but in Texas, the self employed are not covered by the unemployment system, and that includes independent contractors. And an even bigger problem in these circumstance is that, in Texas and Louisiana to my knowledge, and in many other states, the Unemployment systems are archaic and overloaded, and it may take months for them just to work through the current backlog of application.

348 The concern for whether Trump has made a mistake is a
legitimate one. But we have to bear two important things in mind: (i)
the political fall-out from "riding it out" - with all the resultant
deaths - may have been a political disaster for him, even while the
economy benefited; and (ii) if Trump has erred, so has every other major
and minor international economy.
The second point is hugely
important because (assuming, which I do) when Trump flashes the green
light, we will still be the most important economy in the world, and our
recovery will not only be fueled by our own domestic demand, but by the
demand of every other nation.
Trump made the decision he had to make
for political survival (and it was probably correct for other reasons),
and I think he is right that our recovery will be strong - and not all
that far away.

349 re: Triage v. Rationing

While both involve allocation of resources, and there are elements of arbitrariness or even "unfairness", there is a useful distinction.

I view the difference between these two thus:

Triage is first of all, short term decision-making in regard to resource allocation based on an immediacy of need in a high-volume crisis situation, with the decision made at the point of care by the actors delivering that care (ER team, etc.)

Rationing is long-term decision-making in regard to resource allocation based on political policy decisions, with the decisions made off site by faceless and unaccountable actuaries, budget analysts, functionaries and bureaucrats.

At this point we should stay the course with the president's team making the case for phased reopening based on regional situations.

Fauci is and will continue to be a problem, His history is one of a stream of practically unbroken wrong predictions and inconsistency (H1N1, any1?)

Actually, I think the new data coming in is a good excuse to clean house for Trump, or at least read the riot act to the losers on the team he's leading now.

Something along the lines of

"the newest scientific numbers and data tell us that we should be able to relax COVID-19 controls in limited areas of the country. If our data continues on this path, we will begin to open other areas..."

Then if he needs to fire some people-

"in this war, we need to be nimble and correct in our actions for the good of the country. So, I need people able to react to the newest data and not stay married to the old. That's why today I'm bringing ( ) to head our team and ( ) to assist in the effort to save both our people and our economy, because people have to work..."

395 386 The notion of reversing course now (at this point in the outbreak) with the option of re-reversing course if "deaths spike" is foolish in that we are on the cusp of the outbreak turning the corner, and hopefully numbers will bear that out in a more visible way soon, while "number of deaths" is a trailing indicator which lags behind "new cases" and will continue to go up for a time after the contagion slows. At this point we should stay the course with the president's team making the case for phased reopening based on regional situations.
Posted by: Muldoon at April 03, 2020 09:23 AM (m45I2)

I put less stock in the new cases because testing is directed at those with symptoms. It's the death numbers that I feel present a better picture of where the disease is at.

But that's a half-remembered graduate level education in statistics talking.

I don't know about other states, but in Texas, the self employed are not covered by the unemployment system, and that includes independent contractors. there are still hidden potholes; it looks like international trade is going to collapse in a large way, and while we will have growth by bringing a lot of manufacturing back, we will still lose a lot of foreign markets. Yes.
We've also been sneered at as hicks for decades by our NYC media (news, magazines, books, movies/tv). Yet it's NYC that is getting hit the hardest. You'd think they might consider that some of the city's choice contributed to that (enabling homelessness, sanctuary city, calling early warnings racist) - as well as some more widely embraced Lefty ideal of packing people tightly into micro apartments in highrises, primarily using public transportation.

But no, all they can do is demand all the resources and sneer that for some reason red states are more unprepared because they're dumb hick Trump voters. I am so over NYC elitists. 445 the last I heard the time from someone testing positive and death is maybe 5 days ... AND the people that are treated with HCQ cocktail for at least 3 days (I lost that French study link again, because it was in French) ... that study had 1003 patients that tested positive and were on HCQ+ for at least three days, one death.

So I'm think the lag between "cases" and deaths is maybe only a week. If they do not get the treatment, maybe they linger longer and other complications evolve ... and some comorbidity finally gets them ... not sure about that.

And apparently the data is more secret than ICBM missile tech, or hypersonic tech. (both given to Russia/China for some Clinton graft)

450 The estimated number of US CV-19 deaths (100K to 250K) over the next few weeks as reported in the daily pressers just seems off.

The US currently has a death rate of about 2.5% From this we can estimate the number of confimred cases needed to support this number of deaths: 100K or 250K / 2.5% yields 4M to 10M confirmed cases over next few weeks.

Currently the US confimred cases doubling is about every 5 days which yelds about 1.2M confirmed cases around 5/1. Unless I am completely missing something here the model used by the WH team needs some attention.

Based on current numbers, 30K seems more plausible (1.2M * 2.5%) and for those of you into the Monty Python "bring out your dead" scene, if Italy's death rate of 9.5% is used (1.2M * 9.5%) we get 114K dead.

Granted this is not very sohpisticated but it should kick out numbers that are within hand grenade range and it doesn't. I am not a stat person but I did survive engineering calculus; the value of that for mortals is it teaches you how to think about numbers and the numbers from the Feds are just not making sense to me.

453 What is to be done?
The President needs to announce that the virus situation is highly variant all across this Great Nation of Ours, and that Federal guidelines are too much of a "one size fits all" direction. Obviously, one size does NOT fit all; therefore, the Federal Government is leaving the guidelines for the citizenry up to the States and their governments. The Federal Government will continue to support the States, but the main thrust has to come from the States, since they know, far better than the Federal bureaucracy ever could, what their priorities are and what is needed.

No (imo) (but yes in part to the kernel of ur thrust).
(strong "guidance" is essential but implementation/enforcement (choice) local - except for that which is federal e.g.: mass/inter-state transit (FAA//TSA) - and local can follow suit if they so choose (this elides procurement, which cannot be elided)).

However that part is only ~1/4 or less of the whole prudent, edible, and feasible BOM (e.g.: figure-heads, #'s, timetable (like accounting 2-3 weeks for most wheels to start), etc.).

455 Multiple errors here, demonstrating Sefton's complete inability to understand the situation.

First, Trump hasn't imposed any shutdowns, and therefore cannot lift them. State governors and local governments have. Second, those governments largely do not have the manpower to enforce them; aside from things like public schools, the shutdowns are largely voluntary. Does Sefton propose having the federal government force people back outside and into restaurants at gunpoint? Does Sefton seriously believe that even if Trump stands up and says "Everything's fine", people will go right back to previously normal behavior? The public is not behaving this way because Trump told them to or because the media, which they know lies, told them to. The public is behaving this way because they can draw their own conclusions and have drawn conclusions different from the ones Sefton has.

Third, Sefton frames this as a problem specific to American inside-the-Beltway politics. This has no relationship to reality whatsoever. Every Western government with the exception of Sweden has imposed largely the same restrictions, and Sweden has gone from 20ish deaths a week ago to 300+ now, with diagnosed cases on a perfect exponential curve. This is not the New York Times' doing. Denmark's government deciding to lock their country down was not motivated by the Washington Post. Hungary's parliament giving Orban emergency powers and closing the borders was not a result of CNN propaganda. Australia telling all non-Australians to find their way out of the country as the quickest opportunity is not an attempt to manipulate a DC press conference. Only an utterly blinkered provincial with no real understanding of global phenomena could suggest otherwise, but that's what Sefton has done.

Fourth - and this is the big one. Suppose all the state and local governments spontaneously take Sefton's advice, declare everything fine, tell people to go back to work. The result will be, first, continued new infections for at least a little while, and continued deaths for at least a little while, and - this is the big one - Concerned Citizens being absolutely appalled that an epidemic is raging, killing or endangering their family members, and the government's official position is to DO NOTHING AT ALL. Deaths? Yup, we're fine with that, stay on course.

Every politician in the country knows what the outcome of that would be. Sefton, clearly, is no politician, because he's oblivious.

Unbelieveably oblivious.

Or possibly deliberately faking.

We'll leave that as an exercise for the audience.
