59 There's an art to playing "Hide and Seek"

*********************

Honey, I Hid The Kids - a limerick

My grandkids are an exuberant pair
I play with them when I'm over there
"Let's play, Gramps, they cried."
"Okay! You go hide,
While grandpa sits here in this chair!"

There's a great Louie Andersen bit where he talks about how his older siblings would do stuff like that, "then I got a little older, and a little smarter, and a little brother."

The kid behind the divider looks really creepy.

64 What a radiant little girl. I'm sure there was no jealousy in later years from the siblings who are indistinct shapes in the shadows.

Posted by: t-bird at March 31, 2020 10:01 AM (lK7fO)

65 An interesting slice of life, this painting. The little girl seems ready to jump out of the scene at you; she is drawn in a more lively style, or maybe it's the lighter colors and there's more light on her.

Has anybody commented about the painter's watch company? If not, I am.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 31, 2020 10:02 AM (WI7YS)

71 I like adorable and this qualifies. The expressions on the children reflect that sense of fun so well and the little face peeking over the room divider is a nice touch. I also like all the details: the lamp, carpets, the little girl's frock and the reflections in the glass frames. This has the feel of some of those Scandi artists I enjoy.

Tissot shows a sense of fun with some of his paintings and this reflects that humor. I'm going to look at this more later today (errands to run) to get more of the details. I would hang this on my wall for sure.

Posted by: JTB at March 31, 2020 10:03 AM (7EjX1)

82 And for the second day in a row I'm calling "Poorly Proportioned Child". That little girl is old enough to look for her siblings who are hiding, but younger than school age, so somewhere between 2 and 4. The head is too small for the body of a 3-year-old and the arms are too long and skinny.

Kids freak artists out, it appears.

Posted by: Muldoon at March 31, 2020 10:04 AM (m45I2)

83 I also like the bits of light coming into the dark room. The light on the table is a particularly interesting effect.

=====

Yeah, vmom, when you have one, you learn quickly. The Visigoth toddler currently ruling my house and animals is one. She is so darned cute (yes, blond curls and usually smiling and laughing) that she has managed to survive thus far. Nobody would be able to hide in the game from her.

Charming scene of kids, but the dark rags for window curtains is distracting from the game and the players.

95 I like the blues in the center of the work, especially the Persian blue on the lamp and chair to the left. Tissot then surrounds that with its complement--orange, which produces a nice target form. Unfortunately, the large, bright window in the dead center of the piece is very distracting and glaring.

100 These are wonderful, but with a painting this dark, I save the HD version to the desktop, then use an image processor to bring up the shadow detail. No big secrets here, but it reveals a wonderfully domestic scene.

I do wonder if the original paining was so dark or if it's a case of "tarnished varnish."

132 although my county is under a stay-at-home order, at least they just said that no one is going to be pulling anyone over and asking whether they need to be out or not, and nobody is going to be required to carry papers. So, it's all being done on the honor system.

I think that confirms that the order was given to appease the seniors who live here and who were agitating for it. Businesses are all required to close, for the most part, but other than that no enforcement. Police, of course, now have a justification to lean on anyone who's out doing something that bugs them, without having to worry about probable cause.

yes Skip that is a big favorite in our local Catholic elementary schools right now! and has been forever but maybe you made it up!

btw our numbers in ChesCo are still doing comparatively well. we did have one death the other day - an 88 year old man from a local nursing care facility that didn't make it to CCH in time

our "rate of increase" in positive case has held steady. I'd like to see it fall but that is probably more indicative of the amount of testing being done than anything else. CCH is working with DelCo to help them with cases because they're pretty quiet. and maybe PhilaCo also ugh. I'm sure they can handle it but anyway. Seems more like the outer area hospitals are helping the big metros with overflow right now, not that they are "overwhelmed" in any sense.

https://tinyurl.com/uostjyr

I suspect this data and model are what informs the President - I base that on Trump stating that he expected peak deaths in 2 weeks - this model has the peak nationwide on April 14.

At the top you can select data by state. Virginia, for example, has peak resource usage May 28 and peak deaths at about the same - that is likely why Northam extended his order until Jun 10.

Key data point:

Total COVID-19 deaths projected to August 4, 2020 in United States of America 83,967

This story is, I believe, from "My Friend Degas" by Daniel Halevy: It was during the [Franco-Prussian] war--1870--Tissot, James Tissot, the one who illustrated the Bible for Hachette. He met Degas somewhere, told him that Cavalier (a sculptor) had been seriously wounded at Le Bourget, that he had seen him. 'I did a drawing of him--here, look.' Degas forcibly pushed away the sketch, refusing to look at it. 'You would have done better if you'd picked him up,' he said.

449 In big, dense cities, they should tear down every
second building, and make the land into a parking lot. Just reducing the
density by half would vastly increase the quality of life.

in dense cities they are purposefully limiting parking to get rid of cars.....

451 >>> 362 A general detachment from sports would probably do the West some good. Not shutting them all down or anything, but sports just take over the culture for periods of time.

Would be nice if sportsball players were less idolized.

I think Coulter already wrote a very good book on the subject. Of course she isn't allowed to write history.

I know that. And the end result is that they become unliveable. The elite will enjoy their suburban and rural estates, and the proles will languish in their tenement warrens in the cities.

455 I posted this last night on the thread before the ONT.

It's about the wacko that took the fish tank cleaner. Also from Techno_Fog:

@Techno_Fog

NEW:

Court records show the wife who fed her husband fish cleaner (poison?) has a history of mental illness (paranoia, depression) and had considered divorcing her husband as far back as 2012.

That woman really needs to climb the 13 steps. She was sane enough to plot this crime, so she's sane enough to pay the penalty.

463 95 Unfortunately, the large, bright window in the dead center of the piece is very distracting and glaring.
Posted by: Kris at March 31, 2020 10:05 AM (VQp/A)

I think that the large window is intended to attract our attention first, because of the glare, to get our focus in the right place to drop down to the toddler and thereby bring the whole room into play. Without that window, this would be a room stuffed with objects and our focus would go straight to the exceptionally colorful, exceptionally white-frocked toddler and the composition would be lost.
