Haven't looked at the 66 Greatest Inventions but as far as I'm concerned the greatest of the 20th century is antibiotics. I was just at the doctor today for an inflamed kidney (painful as all hell) and I now have lovely Cipro and even lovelier Hydrocodone. Thank you, Big Pharma, for coming up with these magnificent drugs. And thank you God that I live in the US, where the doctor saw me today, and not in Canada, where I'd probably have to wait three weeks for an appointment.

My buddy managed to get a reservation while we were out in CA for a convention and he told me I was going. There were four of us. With wine, the bill came hair-raisingly close to $3,000. I was subsidized by my friend and a truly rich guy who went with us. Absolutely astoundingly expensive.
It was extremely good. Delicious, presentation, service, the whole magilla. It was sensational.
I would never do it again. I can't imagine being so rich that such a wild excess - an excess nearly for its own sake - is something I can rationalize.

My grandmother had an infection from a small cut on the end of a finger, when she was around 8 years old (early 20th century). Even as an old woman she remembered the concern her parents and the doctor had that it would get infected. A cut on a finger was a huge worry.

My great grandmother was 104 when she died in the mid 90s. She lived through a lot - the second industrial revolution, both world wars, the depression, the third industrial revolution, the cold war and the start of the information age. She was born when gas lamps were the norm and died when PCs were common in the home.
The local paper where she was from did an interview with her in late 80s and one of the things they asked was, "what is the most important invention in your lifetime?"
Her answer? "The plastic trash bag."
Apparently public sanitation improved virtually overnight when garbage could be contained, sealed up, and disposed of without leaking paper sacks or just being tossed on the street. She said it was the greatest quality-of-life improvement in her lifetime.

Pixy really hates the directional quotes. I can only agree since they are useless, but does he really have to make me edit each and every one out?

That reminds me of one winter's visit to The Russian Tearoom. Most diners' food was on those enormous plates with tiny thimbles of food. I had ordered the roast duck w/ lingonberry sauce and kasha, plus some roasted winter veggie. My enormous plate was overflowing, getting whispered looks of 'What did he order?' from nearby patrons as I was served. My name, though Hungarian, looks Russian. Maybe that helped with my gigunda helping. I had a good laugh over that tasty dinner.

Those are all minimal, low q flight points. If a civilian can film it's well within design limit envelopes. Also for air show's they modify stores, payload, fuel to keep within limit loads.

Had dinner in the Jules Vern restaurant up in the Eiffel Tower, 250.00 Euro for a five course meal (we were guests of friends, it was on their bucket list).
The fish course consisted of two shrimp in some form of foam. The meat dish was an piece of beef about the size of a silver dollar. The desert wast some tart or another followed, by chocolate and more chocolate and more chocolate. All the sweets made sure you left feeling full, temporarily.
Had a 75.00 Euro bottle of 4.00 Euro wine.

Yeah, I do. But I finish the pasta in a saucepan with the sauce so the pasta finishes cooking by soaking up the sauce thereby flavoring the pasta; it's also why you never add oil to the pasta cooking water as that prevents the sauce from soaking into the pasta. Trick I learned from Linda Bastianich's PBS cooking show.

i think it is like scotch, it is an acquired taste. I make mine a touch before Al Dente as the Italians often do. I read recently if you make it that way it has a lower carb load and a lower glycemic response. I have no interest in debating this because I am accepting it as gospel so I can still eat my spaghetti from time to time.
The overcooked mush is the stable of nursing homes. But to each his own really. I am not talking making it chalky but doing it just right. If you make pasta a couple times a week for a few decades, it becomes second nature.

In IL Restaurants are NOT completely closed, they can still serve carry out. Gas stations and truck stops are NOT closed. I don't know for sure about rest stops but I don't believe they are closed either. it was PA that shut down the rest areas and I believe they rescinded that order today.

Still, have to wonder if it's already been here for months and lots of people caught it and never knew they had it since the reactions to the virus vary wildly. As far as it only killing the old, there are some young patients currently on ventilators.
Why is Western Europe so caught up in it but not Eastern Europe? Why hasn't the UK had the level of contagion as Italy? Why hasn't Africa nor South America having a massive contagion? Both, especially Africa have large Chinese business presences. Why Iran but not so much the Arab countries?
With the variation of who is reacting badly or hardly at all makes me wonder if there is some genetic character not yet found which causes some to have no symptoms but some to be on ventilators or dead.

I recall once he pulled Yuengling off his menu even though it was the only discount beer he offered at happy hour. He pulled Yuengling so fast he didn't have a replacement. You could not get the happy hour beer as there was no alternative available for many days.

Andres is more of a virtue signalling leftist and publicity hound than a chef. Sure he can cook but he is all about his celebrity. This is the same guy that backed out of a restaurant in Trump's building in DC and turned it into a personal and public feud. This is the guy that glomed on to Sergio Garcia when he won The Masters a few years back. You had Andres on tv doing interviews about Sergio during The Masters broadcast. Sure the food is decent yet overpriced. But Andres is a publicity hound. He thinks he has a calling to right all wrongs and to him, Trump is the key wrong.

There's a Chinese Buffet near my hometown that is amazing. They have a Grill so you can make your own kind of plate up and have it cooked up. And their regular buffet selections were always good too. They have spoiled me on other Chinese Buffets. The ones around here are not nearly as good.

Yeah, they also suggest less than US 950 deaths by next Friday after all this economic ruin - that after two months of scare and over a month of sheer economic disaster. A death total less than that of Chicago southside murders annually which no one, NO ONE even reports on. I don't know where this ends - but you are literally witnessing the death of an economy by sheer will power.

Agreed. One last tip, use enough water. don't drown it so that the water is not starchy but don't use so little it clumps together and does not cook right.
A lot of chefs will throw a bit of the cooking water into the sauce to keep it from drying out in the pan and to add a bit of starch. And for sure no one should ever rinse the pasta unless you are making a macaroni salad or something.
I saw a video where Ramsay said you should add a bit of oil to the water. I forget the reason some still use for that but it never made sense to me. There are claims for why they do it though I can't recall them at this moment.
"Ok one last tip. I guess I have proven at least I care a lot about spaghetti lol. The last tip is you have to salt the water. So many home chefs fail because they don't season the food they are cooking properly. For sure you can go to far and ruin the pasta, but most of the time the error is to failure to add salt to the water. If the water tastes like salt water, that is enough for sure. Don't go to far but certainly don't leave it out.

I love Amish foods from stands etc. They are usually home made and craft for one. As for types of foods, you can probably go with German stuff. There is Amish root beer, there is Shoo Fly pie. But mainly it is craft foods like sausages, cheeses etc. others probably have more info on this.

I've haven't eaten at any of the restaurants on that list. The "fancy" restaurants I go to are usually mid-range; nice but not eye-poppingly expensive. And I have a fondness for modest Thai and Mexican places with really good food.

A can of Bush's field peas w/snaps, in a bowl w/kethup on top (really!), makes a good quick meal. Add a couple slices of bread to sop up the pot likker.
They're a little pricey compared to other beans ($1.49 around here), so I always load up when they go on sale.
Lots of good canned seasoned black beans around these days, too, cheap as dirt. Add a green pepper and a bay leaf and simmer down, serve over rice, and yum.

This made me think of the Washington Hotel (Inn) in Roslyn, NY, now long gone, I believe.
George himself was said to have slept there, and there is ample proof that, unlike most places - he actually did. The food was pretty decent in the restaurant, as I remember. NY and Long Island was a huge part of the early days of the revolution, some of the burials of both British and Continental soldiers in a field just outside of Jamaica train station stands testimony to the battle that raged here in the early stages of the war.
Unfortunately, Gen Washington was forced to retreat into NJ as a result of the conflict here - but I think most historians record this as a push...

I've eaten at them all. And the prices are off some too... Typical weekend dinner buffets are running around $30-$33 per head, and includes snow crab (a few have dungeness) and some even have lobster. All you can eat, for the most part.

I get this as a pre-requisite to being listed first time, ie during reds - but you will hasten the demise of a great deal of public entities if this would to become some requirement to being a publicly traded stock - the market is made up of many who have debt obligations that would, if exercised at any moment, preclude payment of contracted salaries. Only cash flow or cash cow industries would survive to be listed. The speculative market would be gone, and only well established company stocks, those priced well out of reach of the common investor, would be available.

As does "not so" and others...it doesn't work to make an adjustment to the 1933 SEC regs regarding investment in a private entity so that must prove 6 months of liquidity for payroll/tax coverage only because so few would ever make that hurdle - you would kill off private speculative investment in these entities - start ups would only be for formally connected or wealthy family members.

Well, startup companies are initially financed from private capital; I have participated in some. But the founding investors hope to get their investment back, plus hopefully a profit, when the company starts trading on a stock exchange.

The Fed was never actually intended to save the economy, it was intended to make sure that the member banks would be protected from failure as they overprinted money. It is a method of forcing inflation onto the economy instead of clearing out unbacked paper dollars through financial collapse of the speculative institutions caused by creating bad loans or unbacked currency that resolve by bank runs and eventual insolvency.
One solution would have been to hold to 100% reserve requirements for banks.
The other was the Fed, which is both a cartel of the banks, and a central planning organization of the US economy.

The savior in bank "crisis" before the creation of the "Fed" were wealthy guys like JP Morgan or Rockefeller, etc. They got tired of bailing out ever banking crisis - they wanted the Feds to open a window that these idiots could borrow capital to ease a run - they didn't think it was there job to provide liquidity to the market. They were right about that, in so far as its not their job to ease a lack of $$ in the banking system.
However, the idea that the Fed could cure runs on banks was disabused in the 30's - the Fed was useless in easing liquidity concerns during periods of cashflow dislocation to businesses.

I keep waking up in the middle of the night with horrible cramps in my calves. Like rock-hard charley horses. If I jump right out of bed it's no big deal, a few minutes walking around and it clears right up. But if I'm too slow, or wake up too late it spreads to my feet, thighs, hips and ass, and then I'm just stuck for hours until it passes, because I can't walk around on curled up toes.
What the hell is this? It sucks ass.

Try 2 tablespoons sugar (not splenda!) and a teaspoon of lite salt in a liter or quart of water. I don't believe the exact amounts are critical. The glucose enhances absorption of the salt and potassium.
Years ago everybody used to take salt tablets in hot weather. Then somebody decided they aren't necessary. I wonder.

can't help ya there, of course see a doc. I had the cramp issue too in the legs but it did not spread. The pain was the kind that was unbearable if it lasted more than a minute or so. I even had a few where it seemed like there was damage to the muscle and you felt if for a few days.
I have read some of it can be from being dehydrated or other reasons. The funny thing is, it was regular for a year or so and then just stopped. Even when it was regular it was uncommon, maybe once a month. But I have not had those in a couple years now. I never knew what caused it and never asked a doc. That was probably not the best idea ever.

It only happens to me rarely, but hurts like a mofo when it does. There are those, and I'm kinda one of them, who believe that quinine helps. I keep a liter bottle of Schweppes Tonic in the fridge, and at the first sign of a foot/leg cramp, I hie me to the kitchen and down 4-6 ozs.
Now, it might be the hobbling to the kitchen that helps ease things...and maybe the quinine actually helps. Dunno. But it seems to. I think that low magnesium levels may contribute muscle cramps.

The way I heard it, it was Irish Spring bar soap placed strategically under the sheets at the foot of the bed. It is supposed to provide relief for "restless leg syndrome", not muscle cramps.
When I worked long hours outside in brutal humidity and slammed fluids all day, that's the only time I ever had muscle cramps. When they lock down, it's actually pretty frightening.
Gatorade might have been scientifically designed to provide electrolytes at one time, in Florida, but it's just mass market crapola by now, pretty sure.

I'm very happy I've gone with a laptop set up of my laptop is closed and I have a hdmi cable to a monitor. No webcam slip ups for something like that if all it can see is the inside of the laptop. So I just have to worry about my dog's being loud.

My station shares the building with a fast food chain. They have kept the inside counter open with "distancing rules" but the seating area is closed, and of course the self serve drink station is closed.

I have a lot of automatic deposits and withdrawals going to that account so it would be a great deal of trouble. I asked the bank if I opened a new account and moved funds to it if I could get those automatic deposits and drafts moved to it. And they said I would have to contact everyone of them individually. Asked soon to be ex if she would take her name off the account. She has been advised by her lawyer to not do anything with the account.

When, not if, this erupts in the homeless community it's gonna get really ugly. Those folks don't have even the most fundamental sanitary practices and they sure as hell don't practice 'social distancing'.

Actually this sets up a good set of tests for us to watch and learn by. if this is as bad as those telling us to shut everything down say it is, then of course it should explode in the homeless population.
If, however, it never affects more than a small number of the homeless, who take no precautions, then that will be a good sign that this was all hype and bullshit.

Point taken, and I concur. I think the trending hypothesis that it's more likely to affect the elderly, and those with underlying health issues will be rigorously tested.
I am still of the opinion that all things considered, it's just a more contagious version of the flu.

I've eaten at Husk in Charleston and Nashville, those are the only two that I would call good values. As long as you don't dip too deep into the bourbon list, you can eat like a king for only slightly more than a typical 'nice' restaurant.The trick to eating well on the cheap is being willing to try new places with young chefs, and find them before they get snapped up by the 'name' establishments. One of the cooks at Minibar used to work at a local joint in my DC neighborhood. I was sad when he 'moved on up.'
