The State Department Summoned Chinese Ambassador: Stop Spreading Lies that Coronavirus Began in America; Chinese State Media Threatens to Unleash "A Mighty Sea" of Coronavirus in America
As John Sexton noted a couple of days ago, part of the reason people enjoy saying Chinese coronavirus is that the Chinese Communist dictatorship lied to the world about the virus, slowing our ability to respond to it/contain it for a month. A month during which the Chinese sent their plague around the world.
And then, soon after, the Chinese Communist Dicatorship started pumping out conspiracy theories that the virus had actually originated in the US, and that it might even be a US bioweapon.As the Washington Post reported last week, China is encouraging the spread of online conspiracy theories that the virus actually originated in the US:Sexton relayed this while discussing Jim Acosta's claim that it "smacks of xenophobia" to call the Chinese coronavirus the Chinese coronavirus, and wondered why Jim Acosta had not seen fit to relay any of this background information about the Chinese government spreading propaganda about the virus being "the American coronavirus."Today the Guardian published a follow-up on these conspiracy theories which are still spreading on Chinese social media:
In recent days, run-of-the-mill mockery of the White House has taken a darker turn as the Chinese Internet became inundated by the theory, subtly stoked by the Chinese government, that the coronavirus originated in the United States. The U.S. government, one version of the theory goes, has been covering up mounting cases, and perhaps thousands of deaths, by classifying them as regular flu. While conspiracy theories pervade the Internet in every country, the sudden surge and overwhelming prevalence of anti-U.S. rhetoric this week has been conspicuous and significant in the context of China, where censors typically scrub speech that strays out of bounds and police quickly detain those deemed to be spreading rumors...
One of the most popular topics on the Chinese microblog Weibo on Thursday was a one-minute clip of a US congressional hearing this week on how the country was dealing with the coronavirus. In the video posted by the People's Daily, Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is asked whether there may have been deaths attributed to influenza that could actually have been the result of Covid-19. Redfield responds in the affirmative: "Some cases have been actually diagnosed that way in the United States today."... "The US has finally acknowledged that among those who had died of the influenza previously were cases of the coronavirus. The true source of the virus was the US!" one commentator said. "The US owes the world, especially China, an apology," another said. "American coronavirus," one wrote.
At some point, CNN might want to clarify with Acosta whether his job is inform people about what's going on in the world or simply to attack President Trump on camera.Trump answered a question at the press conference about a Chinese State Media article claiming The US Army brought the Chinese coronavirus to China. The global spread of the coronavirus is reigniting efforts by the Trump administration to encourage more American manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and reduce dependence on China for the drugs and medical products that fuel the federal health care system. The effort includes a push by the White House trade adviser Peter Navarro to tighten "Buy American" laws so federal agencies are required to purchase American-made pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, according to people with knowledge of the plans. The administration has been preparing an executive order, which could be released in the coming days, that would close loopholes allowing the government to purchase pharmaceuticals, face masks, ventilators and other medical products from foreign countries. The hope is that increasing government demand for American-made drugs and medical products will provide an incentive for companies to make their products in the United States, rather than China. He's been saying he wants to see the USA "decouple" from China. His stepson died from fentanyl overdose, and he is definitely not a fan of the Chinese government (he says they could easily do something about fentanyl and they aren't). So he has been talking about "decoupling" for a while now.
Today he said that decoupling is now inevitable. Can it get worse than a government threatening to withhold antibiotics during a pandemic for political reasons? How can the USA allow itself to be in this position anyway? Now that China has rubbed our nose in what an intolerable situation we are in, obviously we won't want it to continue, and decoupling will happen. I hope he's right.
President Trump: let's see some import duties on pharmaceuticals, extra-high for ones manufactured in China specifically.

The Chinese aren't stupid. Our people were. "Oh, so to do business with you, I have to share my IP and start a joint-venture with one of your state-owned enterprises?"
The answer to that question should have been, "No thank you." Instead it was "Yes, please!"

Last night I was reading about something related to this that I didn't know existed: The Strategic National Stockpile, or SNS. This is a YUGE stockpile of medical supplies and drugs and medical equipment for a Doomsday scenario. It's been there for decades, and got ramped up after 9/11.
It's national security and they keep most of the details quiet, but information does get out and has to with appropriations and stuff. The locations are kept secret and under armed guard.
They can supposedly get "12-hr push packs" they call them of these medical supplies to any location in the country in 12 hours.
Also involved in this are "FMS" units, Federal Medical Stations, which are 250 bed "stations" that can be set up to handle overflow in a local area.
Numbers are secret, but they've probably got around 10K ventilators stocked up in these locations.
We were joking last night they're probably in mineshafts, ala Dr. Strangelove.
They actually the SNS to ship N95 masks to Washington and NY state medical centers because of the run on them.
Anyway, they've got billions of dollars of medical supplies squirreled away.

But it will take some time, can't build factories overnight. An emergency program with government support could probably get some up and running in 6 months or so.

There is a dark flip side to the free trade fundamentalist equation that profoundly misunderstands human psychology and spirit.
Offshoring everything will result in trade deficits, which must be sanitized through the purchase of assets from the deficit-making country. This is usually things like buildings and ports, but it can also be bonds. As long as the equation balances, it doesn't much matter.
There is a reason that the budget deficit and the trade deficit are related - purchase of government bonds by our trading partners who run surplus with us are a handy and liquid way to balance things out. And we need them to do so, because we have to spend that money on social programs to fill in the gaps left behind by all of the offshoring.
It feeds itself and in so doing eats away at us. It does so because the geniuses who thought up these schemes assumed that the government could close the gaps left behind by the massive capital flows caused by global wage arbitrage.
In other words, they made the assumption that welfare was the same as a paycheck. It isn't.

I think I've read that there a a number of factories in the U.S. and Puerto Rico which could be turned around pretty quickly. Antibiotics seemsto be the most critical need. And I think it's going to happen from this experience with the supply chain being able to be held hostage.

In reading stuff about the SNS last night and the N95 masks, the figure of 13 million in stock in the SNS was given (but who really knows). Anyway, the run on these masks prompted them to request appropriation to increase the supply in the SNS to 500 million by 2021.
So this gives you some idea of the scale of the SNS.
And it's all secret. The locations are very secret, with Area 51 type security. You don't want an enemy to know where there are, and don't want a panicked bunch of locals in the Zombie Apocalypse storming them.
They used equipment from the SNS for repatriating the diplomats from China, and most likely used in that big cruise ship operation.
They can get tons of shit that are needed to places like this quickly without having to rely on local stocks and markets.

They own less than they used to. They sold a lot of them during the financial crisis and since then to prop up domestic industries. There is a lot off-book (suspected, anyway, because places like Norway seem to own disproportionately large amounts of US treasuries) and the exact figures aren't known, but the Fed bought a *lot* of Treasury paper during QE and a lot of it was likely Chinese in some manner.
The Chinese own <$1.5 trillion at this point. They are not the largest holder anymore.

I normally order from them and get a shipping notice the same day within a few hours if it was a week day.
Somebody is buying up silver and gold by the metric a$$ ton because those prices are way over what they used to charge and they literally never had shipping delays in the last 15 years since I have been buying from them.

Only one species of the eucharist is necessary to be a sacrament. There is no reason to include the Blood of Christ for communion. That said, the sacrifice of the mass is required for reception unless the reception is part of the rite of extreme unction/last rights/anointing of the sick. That too is a rite, not just the receiving of communion. There cannot be drive through eucharist.

But the Soviets have also been colonizing to some extent ... they were Mandela's buddy in S Africa ... and they won. Now we have the BRICs thang ... we need to get South America to turn toward Westernism, instead of Cartelism/Communism. ... Maybe Central/South America could replace China for more menial labor .. but leave them in their own country.

So the priest couldnt have done the Sacrifice of the Mass beforehand (which is what I meant) and brought it to the people in their cars. I mean Eucharistic Ministers don't do the sacrifice of the Mass-they just bring already consecrated hosts around? I'm not trying to be irreverent here; I'm just saying that depending on how long this goes it a long time without communion.
