Instead its just high school level boring and few attractive girls. But I'm kind of biased, I do not really like basketball much to begin with. It really suffers from being basically 5 minutes of interesting play stretched into around two hours. So maybe I'm not the best judge of the sport.

Accomplishment isn't the yardstick, suffering is. He who suffers most has the most virtue. He who does not suffer has no virtue.

Posted by: kallisto at March 12, 2020 08:30 PM (XUMZv)
++++++++++++++
Per my understanding, they did. And they were a single point of failure in the process due to FDA regs.

Trump and Pence axed those regulations and cleared the road to allow state and local and university and private labs to get into the mix and distribute the rollout. Once the stupid regulations were cleared, test kits were almost immediately available.

The CDC is largely incompetent, like all government agencies are mostly incompetent. And they were a legal/regulatory bottleneck. Once they broke the bottle, it was fine. But in that first several days or a week, the CDC was inhibiting test kit availability.

That makes zero sense. The countries who have done the most testing have also shown that while many people have tested positive for COVID-19, the mortality rate is on par with the influenza virus, around 1%.

So if President Trump wanted to guarantee his re-election, he would encourage more testing, because that would stop the freakout when everyone finds out this is no more a danger than the average flu. By not testing, the numbers are flawed, because they show a high mortality rate by not capturing all the people who get infected and recover.

People talk about that virus that was dangerous, the Spanish Flu, circa 1918.

What I haven't seen is the mention of another virus, Polio, that rampaged America until a vaccine was created in the mid-1950's.

Both attacked healthy people.

Everyone over 50 has that little mark on their arm who got the polio vaccine, first generation.

What I haven't seen is the mention of another virus, Polio, that rampaged America until a vaccine was created in the mid-1950's.

Everyone over 50 has that little mark on their arm who got the polio vaccine, first generation.

My question is: did America shut down for polio, like it appears to be doing now for novel Beervirus?

I don't know. It did for the Spanish Flu.

Yes, but I have learned that it is a "gentleman's sport." I have an acquaintance who is a professional curler (part time, he is a coworker). I asked if he was ever distracted by booing/heckling/etc. or if it interfered with the shouted instructions.

He looked aghast and replied, "That doesn't happen. Curling is a gentleman's game. That kind of thing wouldn't be tolerated."

That is the absolute polar opposite of cucking out. It's more aggressively doubling down than even just telling them openly to eff off. He's essentially saying "I'm not only going to not apologize, but I'm going to directly mock you to your face with an insulting "apology" that is so insultingly obviously additional mockery of you, but delivered in just enough of a faux-genuine sounding tone that i ecpect you to actually think I'm buckling under and apologizing - because i think you're actually that dumb"

It would peak in the summer, and that's when the outbreaks would occur. It was a scourge.

My piano teacher had a bad leg requiring a cane from a childhood bout with polio. A few high school teachers bore scars from it too. I read pools were closed to avoid catching it. I can't imagine how scary that was for parents.

341 Test shit loads of people even if they show no symptoms.

The test doesn't work if you have no symptoms.

You need to have enough viral load for the test to work, and you don't have enough viral load if you are symptomless, even if you are infectious.

There is zero point to testing people who appear healthy.

+++++++++++++++
Here's an indicator.

My mom was in elementary school in the wake of the '52 outbreak. She was in Pittsburgh, where Dr. Salk was working on the vaccine. She was in one of many elementary schools selected for testing vaccines as he was developing them.

Except for the Jehova's Witnesses and Christian Scientists (there were very few - she was in a largely Jewish school), every single parent consented to let their kids be part of the study.

My mom was inoculated over a dozen times with various different vaccine rounds as they developed it.

It was scary enough that affluent and semi-affluent families allowed their children to be used as guinea pigs to pursue the vaccine.

I am glad they did. Eliminating the scourge of Polio from most of this Earth is one of our greatest accomplishments.

So I can say a couple of things. 1) He's six and a half feet tall. He knows basketball. 2) He's a mischief-maker. His mother used to plan on weekly visits to the principal, who said one of the problems was when Jesse resolved on some mischief, he had no trouble persuading people to join him.

If you've been following Jesse for a while you'll recall his "Happy Equal Pay Day" tweet last year, which consisted of footage from a Tennessee v. Vanderbilt women's game that was written up on the Golf Digest website with the headline "Behold the worst sequence in the history of organized basketball." https://tinyurl.com/wv8f6dl

The footage showed a clusterf*ck under the net as player after player tried to take shots that bounced off the underside of the backboard and the rim, followed by a ball recovery and a drive to the other end of the court that was exactly what Jesse was describing in the analogy of his "apology."

When Thaddeus Stevens complained to President Lincoln about high prices in some war contracts reflecting adversely on Secretary of War Simon Cameron, Lincoln said:
"Why, Mr. Stevens, you don't think the Secretary would steal, do you?" The Old Commoner answered, "Well, Mr. President, I don't think he would steal a red-hot stove."

Lincoln liked the joke so much he told it to Cameron, who didn't like it and demanded that Stevens retract it. Stevens went immediately to Lincoln and told him: "I said I did not think Mr. Cameron would steal a red-hot stove. I am now forced to withdraw that statement."

They are out there now, and have been for a little while. It was red tape (FDA regulations), Trump did clean it up (he or Pence - I am not sure who made the recommendation) axed those regs and opened non-CDC distribution and labs to engage in and coordinate testing.

Beware the lying, enemy, fake news, progda press. The CDC is doing very little testing because they're basically incompetent. Gross testing, though, is way up and private labs are not facing testing shortages. The CDC itself is not doing much, but in aggregate test capacity is present and testing is occurring.

It was - and is - the CDC that fouled it up. Trump did ax through the red tape to allow others to get it done.

The best theory I have seen is that people thought TP was made in China because everything else is. There was concern that with China basically offline or restricted, that there would be shortages and so they went and bought up store supplies. Which looked like a shortage. Which triggered more buying. Which created real shortages. Which triggered more manic demand.

621 Okay - Tucker Carlson - while being rather Trumpy - is an idiot. He has on experts who say we're all going to die or get the virus and have a great possibility of...you guessed it, dying!

Never the skeptic when he thinks he's on the self-subscribed side of lowly low lives out in fly over country who NEED Tucker's giant Trinity College brain to help them get thru the everyday wickets of life - he never asks these "medical" experts the obvious - why they are so certain everyone will contract the disease and likely have severe or deadly consequences?

That's because its basically the layman's lottery math that these knuckleheads use to scare you - "hey, ya nevah know!" - yes, you do know. You're not going to win the lottery and you're not going to die of coronavirus - because of a hard subject that political majors at Trinity don't study much - statistics. Its nearly impossible at the current spread rate of this virus in the US to wind up getting it - at least right now - certainly not dying - and its not spreading among known cases at any where daily rate of the H1N1 rate that never even entered a grey cell in Tucker's head ten years ago. He needs to discuss "optics" of politics more which seems more his forte, honestly - not math - that subject is for everyone else.

That said, who runs education? That's right insane democrats and who is it wants Trump to fail and put the country in flames? Right again, democrats.

So they've decided to make people hurt over this and panic everyone. Just like they did with government closures and they locked things up they didn't have to to force the GOP to pass the bills.

This is going to eventually end in outright warfare because people are getting more and more aware of who is doing this and there is no legal way anymore to fight them.

We are being left with violence as the only way to effect change. They refuse to discuss/compromise act sane so they will get want they are demanding.

Of course it could be that China has under-represented it's mortality rate, and Italy is having it bad right now (about 1/4 of the total deaths are in Italy), but compared to the Black Plague and the 1918 Spanish Flu these are weak numbers.

Which of course means it can always get worse.

When the whole world is shutting down and risking extreme economic
damage, closing businesses and schools, is there something we don't know
here. They didn't do this for Sars or Mers or any other viruses in the
past. I mean most of the Countries are either way over reacting or is
there something we don't know about.

The first reported case was a couple of miles from the ChiCom's bio-weapons lab, at a market where it is said workers from that lab would sometimes sell research animals for a little extra cash.

Add to that the insane Freak Out by the Chinese government quarantining entire cities of millions and you have plenty of fodder for paranoia.

Picked up my glasses at Costco and the greeter at the Entrance was calling out "No toilet paper, no hand sanitizer!" Half the people who were approaching turned around.

I agree, however, it is not more useful that self quarantining.

If you have symptoms, or have been in contact with someone that has them self quarantine.

If you do not self quarantine and wander around for a day or so after getting tested.

Posted by: not so at March 12, 2020 10:00 PM (HALdu)

Definitely, self quarantining is the way to go.but we do need tests to identify those who have the virus and then inform those they have come in contact with.

Speaking of self quarantining,Ted Cruz's recent podcast topic was about his self quarantine. Haven't listened yet.

782 The contagion problem is due to the mixing of people and the ease of transportation.

Lots of SciFi stories about this sort of thing. Can bring a modern civilization down quite quickly as we can see. Especially with panic and stupidity.

Best thing is if you can stay clean, get isolated, wait it out.

Eventually the weather will heat up and that should put paid to the majority of cases and spread. Until then think!

There have been worse epidemics that did not have this much panic. That's because there is more communication AND the media is hyping it to hurt Trump by hurting the country.

They will try to hype this into the summer but it won't work.

They will add all sorts of crap to the funding bills so Trump has to choose to allow their crap to keep people safe.

Just keep everyone advised who is really responsible for the idiocy.

783 Re testing, it is too late unless you are showing serious symptoms or are a health care worker. It is loose and we have no effective way to track infected people (see CDC's admission to Sen. Cassidy in today's Epoch Times). Containment is now not practical because a lot of carriers are out there with no way to identify them. This is explicitly the CDC's fault and needs to be hung around its neck. It failed, it failed the American people miserably, and all the senior administrators that are docs need to be sent to the front lines to treat patients in the epidemic to expiate their sins.

So mass testing is out, we are going to plan b which is mitigation--by cancelling mass events across the border, removing places like Disneyland/World that are destination spots for travel, we are trying to stretch out when the exponential growth will be by social distancing, etc.

It is a critical issue to folks above sixty and those with impaired health such as heart conditions etc. to keep the health system from overloading and give time to get to next fall where we may face this again.

It is not the flu.
A) no one has natural resistance to this--it is new and thus no herd immunity to stop the spread, unlike flu. Flu, herd resistance slows the spread.
B) There is no vaccine for it and unlikely to be one before fall. This sucker is mutating which makes it difficult, like the common cold to have a vaccine worth producing that is effective. There is a vaccine for flu that will reduce the impact.
C) We have no proven antivirals for this and have scant time to research it. We do have antivirals for sensitive flu patients.
D) Wuflu gives unfortunates a bad viral pneumonia infection which is proving deadly for elderly patients and compromised health systems. It is also killing health care workers and making them sick because of huge viral loads that they deal with. Regular flu, if it does create pneumonia, it is typically bacterial for which antibiotics and pneumonia shots give some protection.

The dose makes the poison and older people have more ace2 receptors for the spikes of the coronavirus to latch onto to replicate and thus have more favorable conditions to massive viral loads that the immune system in the respiratory system shuts down--the killer is Acute Respiratory Distress (ARD) from the virus.

There is some quibbling about the R0 which roughly speaking corresponds with how many people that each infected person passes the disease on to. The growth is exponential and what we are trying to do is stop geographic spread caused by internal and external travel, slow down the infection rate so that health systems can keep up, and hope for heat and humidity to affect it like similar viruses such as flu and colds.

Think of COV19 as a forest fire that can spin on a dime with changing vectors and head in any direction. Shutting down mass gatherings and spots and eliminating reasons for internal travel are designed as firebreaks to slow the fire down until mother nature helps out.

Posted by: deadrody at March 12, 2020 11:46 PM (V9901)

788 The critical concept is viral load; from the AIDS events. At the time infected dudes kept getting, if I can say it, re-loaded. Quarantine under closed circumstances works to increase the viral load, but admittedly protects the community. Think of quarantine as stewing in your own juices (and the lack of that viral slayer, sunshine). Patients are being tented so they don't breath their own exhalation. Testing is for egoists, that Tom Hanks must feel good about himself; covid-19 is everywhere. A Merkel says 70% will get it, she can't tell me the time of day; but even if she's 1/2 wrong or 1/2 right, Wuflu its everywhere. If Wuhan deaths are marked at say 5000; the death rate for what I guess is 50 million people of Wuhan is very low. The old numerator/denominator relationship.
