House and Senate Democrats Are So Serious About the Coronavirus Threat... That They Want to Take Away The President's Ability to Impose Travel Restrictions During Epidemics

So serious.

House and Senate Democrats are responding to the coronavirus outbreak in the United States by supporting measures to effectively strip President Trump of his authority to impose travel bans to protect American citizens.

While Trump has implemented travel bans on China and Iran -- two of the most coronavirus-affected nations in the world -- House Democrats are looking to roll back the president’s authority to enact travel bans from regions of the world.

The “No Ban Act,” introduced by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) and co-sponsored by 219 House Democrats, would have prevented Trump from immediately implementing a travel ban on China once the outbreak of the coronavirus spread past its origins of Wuhan.

Instead, the No Ban Act would have allowed travelers from Wuhan to continue to arrive in the U.S. while the president received guidance from Congress.

"This bill imposes limitations on the President’s authority to suspend or restrict aliens from entering the United States and terminates certain presidential actions implementing such restrictions," a summary of the legislation reads.

Below, some twitter reactions to the media's obvious efforts to stir up a coronavirus panic.

WARNING: These statements have not been verified by Noted Infectious Disease Expert Doctor Guy P. Benson, Ph.D., nor by his team of virology researchers at his world famous Swiss clinic. So the status of the below claims is "Unknown" at the moment.

7 Nancy Pelosi:

- Tried to sneak FISA reauthorization into original ChinaVirus funding bill

- Delayed passage of that bill to run ads against Republicans on Super Tuesday

- Tried to sneak abortion funds into new virus funding bill

Yet Trump is the one politicizing the virus?

28 Democrats are turning this into a bloodbath for the country- and it's deliberate. Their presidential candidates,w ho barely have a pulse, are attacking a president who has handled this very effectively. The Democrats in Congress put together a package of garbage in a bill today that is a wish list of all their most ambitious political goals- having nothing to do with the coronavirus outbreak at all.

One thing Americans have learned is that when the chips are down, Democrats will doink the citizens in the ass and give illegal immigrants a drivers license.

In all my years in the markets, I have never seen such mayhem and uncertainty created by people who are allegedly Americans. This is an absolute disgrace, and I never thought I would live to see this day.

97 Why, it's almost - almost - like the president had explicit and plenary statutory authority* to limit or deny entry to anyone to the US for national security purposes, under existing law - else why would Congress need to modify this?

And yet, the "judiciary" flagrantly ignored the law, and interfered with this president's clear and completely lawful actions to protect national security, based on common sense and intel analysis about risk assessments for people from failed-state hotbeds of terrorism.

And disastrously, the DOJ did anything other than deliver a nukyler ass-blistering lecture to the "courts" and repudiate their lawlessness.

* there's a whole 'nuther serious question about whether the president has inherent authority to close/control borders as part of his national security authorities, apart from statutory authorization

That being said at some point it's going to die down, the economy will rally (probably before November) and then you have the Democrats still all-in on open borders somehow?? I can't believe they haven't backed off of that. The Democrats are also likely to oppose any sort of popular ideas Trump throws out there like payroll taxes and they won't have a good explanation why they oppose them.

I said this a few weeks ago.

They needed something to hurt Trump. Everything discovered or engineered has completely collapsed.

A new virus pandemic happens to come along, and they latch onto it like nobody's business. They didn't control the timing, they just took advantage of something when it came along.

Assuming this doesn't become a huge thing for months on end, it'll peter out before the Democratic National Convention. It won't attack the fundamentals of the economy for more than a few weeks and the economy will recover. The perception won't be that Trump bungled the economy, but that the economy reacted to a major global event.

Italy's foreign minister has said the severe restrictions brought in as a result of the coronavirus are a way to defeat it.

Luigi Di Maio told the BBC the measures imposed in the first area of the outbreak were proving effective.

Two
weeks after the first 10 towns in northern Italy were declared a "red
zone" and put under lockdown, he said they had no new infections.

This then served as a model to tighten measures across the country.

Which does nothing to repair the damage done by the judiciary 3 years ago. Oh and BTW, it's even worse than you think.

Inferior courts have repeatedly defied SCOTUS (which upheld the "ban", which of course was actually a suspension, and therefore was completely vitiated in its impact by the delay in enforcement) by issuing new injunctions with the laughable rationale that the cases in question were "different", even though they engaged exactly the same presidential authorities.

Even the forms of constitutional, lawful, good-faith governance are no longer affected by the judiciary, and of course the elected Dems.

353 263, This is an exponential curve. Expect the death rate to increase from anywhere to 5-10 percent a day during the next week or so. Death rate will roughly double at 8% avg in about nine days. We probably have from projections anywhere from 10-20k cases (officially less than 1500) and each of these will infect others so mebbe 40-50k cases by mid part of next week depending on R0 and seasonal variable as well as local measures to slow down transmission.

Europe is farther along the curve than we are (about 10k diagnosed) and have tightly constrained medical facilities. Expect maybe 50-100 k diagnosed cases by the end of the weekend depending on how effective Italy's constraints are.

Don't go to Europe as things are going to get bad there before they get better. UK is in a bit better shape but then again, the NHS and they are going to have to kill travel to the ME, especially Iran, and Pakistan.

366 Eh, I'm not sure what to think.

I know some are predicting the market keeps going down. I guess it is likely.

But I'm invested in a broad range of stocks across all the sectors, all of them with strong earnings who are still making things that people are buying.

Common sense is telling me that just like the panicked over reaction to this virus, that the predictions for long term economic collapse are also over reactions.

In two week either half the country is dead from this pandemic, or things are back to normal and suddenly everyone realizes that nothing really happened, we just had a long freak out that really had no impact.

My retirement plan was focused on 7 years from now, not much I can do about it now. I still own a lot of shares of some excellent companies. I don't think they are going out of business or going to stop making money.

Hell, about 10% of my portfolio is in my own company. We are down about $60 per share. But we have over a billion cash on hand, an orders backlog we can barely fill, more work that we can find employees for, and prior to this the analysts were saying we are 24% under valued.

I think I'm going to spend some time playing video games and wait for normality to return.

379 Believe a CDC guy, applying the usual flu models (probably comparable, close enough) said a while back that cases would probably peak in April, then fade quickly. Only the initial phase of an epidemic is exponential, when the number of infected and recovered is vanishingly small fraction of the total population.

Once it becomes significant it slows down.

Here's Wiki's elementary page on the infectious disease modes, sets of differential equations, the simplest of which being the SIR model:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Compartmental_models_in_epidemiology

While there is no general analytic solution to these, numerical plots can be done and you can see the curves.

Basically, it's an initial exponential, then slows down, peaks, and declines.

Here's a plot from the SIR page of a typical solution form to the SIR equations:

https://preview.tinyurl.com/yx3m7pdn

Blue curve is the number of susceptible, green is number of infected, and red is recovered.

Note the form of the green curve. Only the very initial phase is exponential. It peaks, then declines back to zero. That is the typical form of an epidemic.

Of course, that's just a very basic model. Real world epidemics are much more complex, but that gives you the basic behavior.

447 "So no one is confident enough to buy ahead of the actual earnings being reported."

I think at this point people aren't sure if companies have fundamental loses or not. For instance, Lockheed took a beating today. Why? Is something they are doing putting them at risk, like some major venture in Europe, or is it just this dumb panicked market. Earnings are real data to make decisions on.

449 All "green" power proposals assume a "Limits To Growth" world, where the price of oil will go to $250 in a few years.

None of these projects remotely pencil out if oil and natural gas remain cheap.
Posted by: The ARC of History! at March 12, 2020 04:55 PM (I2/tG)

I will always remember an economist I knew well back in the early 80's, he told me that he always laughed at "official" oil price projections. He pointed out that all projections show this nice, straight sloping line going up into the future - except if you pull up a chart of the entire 20th century, you will see that on about a 20 cycle oil prices shoot up, then they level, then they completely collapse for a few years, then they creep up, then they spike, then they collapse, over and over again.

So now we'be back to the Total Collapse part of the cycle. Well, i lived through it once before, in 1986. At least Texas is a bit more diversified now than it was then. Every State based bank in Texas went bankrupt in 1986 - there used to be a lot of them.

Posted by: Ripley at March 12, 2020 04:58 PM (MxEKc)

I think stagnation is more likely. Stagnation can go on for quite some time. Price drops only happen when a large number of people are forced to sell, and I don't see that pressure coming yet. In 2008 the junk mortgage problem had put a lot of people into houses who could not afford the monthly payments, and they had to liquidate.

Factor in the incredible story of how that resource was developed and transported, since the beginnings of the global oil market at the start of the 20th century. Well, I am taking a beer break, after having successfully strung wire for another branch circuit, and tying it into an unused breaker on the service panel. The outlet into which this computer is plugged is now tied in directly to the panel, instead of fed by an extension cord plugged into another outlet. This entailed a fair amount of attic creeping.

Glad to hear it. Good thing we're not catching any of this rain, right? But if it rains enough, Newsom & Co. will want to raise taxes for flood control. Complete cancellation is bad for all players and fans but it's especially nasty for teams like Dayton, Baylor, Gonzaga, etc. These are schools that have a decent chance of winning for the first time and may never have the chance again for ages.

Also, there's a good discussion on medical testing a bayes theorem in the morning thread links.

Specificity and Sensitivity even at 99% which they aren't - doesn't make sense to test everybody. Test people who are symptomatic, and at risk yes. Basically we don't do stress tests on everyone for the same general reason. If you are symptomatic, or in a risk group yes. Not really screening test.

All screening is pretty ineffective but we limit that based on risk groups colonscopy over 50 unless you have family hx then 40.

The left knows this, but they also know it is hard to explain bayes theorem and have it make sense to the average human.

They're a bunch of dicks who have no interest in anything but their own power.

There will be blood, because they won't have it any other way.

Posted by: Trump poisoned my cat at March 12, 2020 05:39 PM (puu6v)

565 353 263, This is an exponential curve.

As usual, what demorats are the most guilty of, they try to get out front and blame their opponents who are no guilty of the crimes demorats have engineered.

Chutzpah, they want Quid-Pro-Joe to be our next president regardless of being caught red handed. For Quid-pro-quo they blame President Trump for, for years, regardless of President Trump being innocent, and have demanded He step down.
