John Hayward/Doc 0: Why Does the Left Think the Talking Point That an Armed American Citizenry Could Never Cause a Problem for the American Military, When They're Constantly Boasting About Third World Revolutionaries Defeating American Military Forces?

Great point.

The left is always claiming that we mustn't go to war in this shithole country or that one, because peasant militias can always defeat Colonialist Invaders.

But when it comes to America, they claim that Bubba can't do a damn thing with his AR-15.

Here's the rest of his argument, put into a less twittery format:

Of course it's vapid, but it's also vicious. They think they're judo-flipping the rubes out in flyover country and pinning them to the mat with their reverence for the U.S. military. "You hayseeds can't possibly think you could beat those awesome soldiers in a GUNFIGHT?"

For the gun-control zealot, it's a form of contempt-signaling, the even dumber negative form of virtue-signaling. Other members of their tribe are supposed to giggle at the image of Bubba impotently waving his "assault rifle" and Gadsden flag while an F-15 vaporizes him.

One of the obvious problems with this "you can't beat the U.S. military so guns are no use against the military" idiocy is that tyrants around the world very clearly DO fear the prospect of an armed populace. That's why they always aggressively disarm their captive people.

The track record of lightly-armed insurgencies against professional military forces in the modern era is actually pretty good, even when the military forces are vastly more aggressive and willing to inflict collateral damage than the U.S. armed forces ever would be.

To even speculate on how things would go if the U.S. armed forces became a gang of ruthless killers under some communist or fascist American tyrant is to enter the realm of science fiction. Healthy respect for the 2nd Amendment helps to ensure things never get that far.

An armed population of sovereign citizens goes a long way toward keeping tyranny from ever getting off the ground. Of course collectivist Democrats with their hive-mind thinking don't consciously understand it, but the 2A is helping restrain their worst impulses RIGHT NOW.

The many, many, many bad ideas of the Left all began as theoretical discussions, campus bullshit sessions, and Two-Minutes Hates in their online fever swamps. One thing that keeps their worse ideas from mutating into policy agendas is the reality of an armed populace.

It really does make a difference that they know some of the collectivist ideas they would love to inflict on the American people would be effectively resisted. The Left knows it subconsciously, which is why they keep having spazzed-out fantasies of using F-15s to slaughter Bubba.

They're trying to reassure each other that THEIR power is absolute while YOU have none at all. Once they trick you into submitting to socialized medicine, forced population shifts, or one of their other doomsday schemes, you'll be helpless. Deep down, they're not so sure.

But long before you dip into left-wing psychosis or apocalyptic scenarios of armed revolt against a tyrant, you have the way armed citizens see themselves differently than disarmed ones. The first two amendments in the Bill of Rights profoundly shape the nature of citizenship.

The 2nd Amendment UNDERMINES tyranny long before anyone has to think about FIGHTING it. If we stand tall as sovereign citizens and cherish our rights AND responsibilities - the 2nd Amendment is where they meet! - we won't get stuck with rulers we have to "take on." /end

Dave Reaboi has an important caveat to this line of reasoning, though:

By the way, speaking of Fake Libertarians, Mike Flynn used to work at Reason with Dave Wiegel. (CLARIFICATION: The Mike Flynn who was, before he died, an editor and writer at Breitbart, not General Flynn.)

Wiegel, Flynn told me, was always Just a Liberal. Not a Libertarian-Liberal and certainly not a full-on Libertarian. Just a standard-issue wallflower drip of a liberal.

Wiegel is one of those many, many Fake Libertarians who talks up libertarianism only as an argument in favor of liberal social priorities -- gay sex, drugs, etc.

When the topic is gun rights or property rights or the right to hire and fire as you please, suddenly this fake "Libertarian" can only think about the grave dangers of Trusting Citizens With Too Much Freedom.

This is the guy the Washington Post pretended was some kind of conservative-leaning libertarian and gave him the beat of covering the conservative movement.

Oh -- Mike Flynn also told me that Dave Weigel looked up to Klein as some kind of Cool Guy BMOC Hero.

There's no political relevance in dishing that up.

It's just so Sad! I thought I should mention it.

I'm more and more convinced that someone's claimed "Libertarianism" has no predictive power at all as far as informing you what their policy preferences will be.

Their partisan affiliation -- simple liberal D vs. conservative R -- will tell you that.

Their "Libertarian" self-identification will only predict what arguments they'll make in favor of their preferred policies. Liberals who claim to be Libertarian will just be standard issue liberals on all topics -- they'll just trot out their "Libertarian" arguments to agitate for liberal policy goals.

They quickly "forget" about their alleged libertarianism when libertarianism might point to a conservative policy outcome.

I see more actual Libertarianism trumping standard political categorization on the right. Right-leaning libertarians can't wait to show they're different than conservatives by adopting liberal positions.

But liberal "Libertarians" never do so.

One More Point: The US troops stationed in Germany were never really expected to hold off a gigantic Soviet invasion, with Soviet troops outnumbering ours 10:1.

They were really there as a tripwire: The Soviets were made to know they could take Germany, but only by attacking US troops, which would invite the US to do their worst in reply.

An armed citizenry doesn't have to defeat the government forces. Gandhi's Indian resistance didn't.

The point of an armed citizenry is to say "NO" to overweening government, and put the government on notice: You can enslave us, but we will not permit you to pretend otherwise. If you mean to enslave us, you'll be forced to physically enslave us.

And kill us.

And that forces the government to decide if it can maintain control of conservative-leaning, freedom-oriented military personnel and cops, ordering them to murder civilians.

That's another kind of tripwire.

Yeah, you can order American soldiers to gun down Americans, but... how many do you think they'll kill before they start thinking that it might be better to point their guns in the opposite direction?

The answer is that government employees (including the military) have no problem destroying American citizens and will use any means necessary to show them who is boss. Foreigners, even enemies, are given much more respect.

75 54 If the Left ever did gain the White House, Senate and House of Representatives and declared "war" on us Constitution loving rubes, how much of the military would actually follow through and fire upon us law abiding citizens?

Methinks there a sudden depletion of officers due to chronic lead poisoning.

\
That situation, basically, is why Franco and Pinochet had to make their moves when they did. Venezuela could still have been a viable country today if anyone in their military would have had the courage and drive to do the same before it was too late. BUT they were probably all into the drug smuggling by the time it went down, so they didn't give a shit.

The real point of having weapons if the government devolves into tyranny is to make it as expensive in lives as possible for the oppressors. As some point, there won't be any more door-kicking fascist tools, since no one will want the job. Then you'll get the scene of buildings being flattened by tanks and such, then potentially neighborhoods (along with collateral damage to enrage the uncommitted).

If you think the nation will continue functioning normally at that point, you're delusional. It will descend into functional warlordism, with only a loose authority structure that occasionally ventures into "no go" zones for specific missions to disrupt counter-government activity --- i.e. Afghanistan, Vietnam, etc.

many do you think they'll kill before they start thinking that it might
be better to point their guns in the opposite direction?
---

Historically, this is how many dictatorships fall.

The troops are ordered to do something they'd rather not, and the only option is to change sides.

Something the Ruling Class forgets is that *enlisted men* don't get to do that neat thing where they can resign their commissions or lodge a formal protest.

For the rankers, it's do or die. If you refuse an order, you may as well mutiny because the end result will be the same.

David French and Mayor Pete don't know anything about this, because they regard enlisted ranks as a servant class that is too stupid to do anything other than carry out their wishes.

But...it's not a great platform. Modern 1911's are worlds better than older versions and they still malfunction way more than any gun designed since the 1980's. Field stripping is more complicated than it needs to be, the manual of arms is a bit odd.

Can they work? Yes.
Are they worlds better than no gun or revolvers? Yes
Do they have nice triggers? Hell yes.

198 Epstein didn't kill himself, neither did Haley ... or 1000 other witnesses that were inconvenient to the DeepState and/or Clintonistas. (poor Seth).

So they certainly think certain strategic murders can be very effective. Mike Flynn died way too soon, so did Breitbart ... maybe just the stress killed them, idk any details. But I don't think the point of guns now is to take on the military. It would be to take on the mob leaders, the way they have been targeting us (some murder, but a lot of malicious prosecution of leaders)

Bush and others believed in fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here. That might apply on a more local level ... if they start breaking down doors in dawn raids on patriots ... they might find the patriots doing their own targeted raids, rather than waiting for the thugs to come (not) knocking.

210 The U.S. is simply too large to control by force. You might be able to maintain order in the major cities, but you don't have enough troops to control every town and village as well.

Any attempt to crack down would result in a US which fractured into multiple governments.

211 A lot of good points here but you make the same assumption about Group of Soviet Forces Germany that you say progressives make about us Bubbas.

The GSFG did heavily outnumber US Forces and had a numerical advantage over NATO forces. But, as it turns out, we assumed the Soviet "tip of the spear" was in fact sharp enough to act. By the mid 80s, that is a very dubious proposition as to whether the Soviet forces might have been able to advance very far from their bases in Central Europe.

Perhaps in the 60s and early 70s they had a greater advantage. I was there for much of the 70s and our forces had problems.

But we always seem to over estimate our weakness and over estimate the abilities of our adversaries. Just like we did with the MiG-21, and MiG-25. These were thought to be invincible until we got our hands on them.

Soviet forces were large but poorly maintained, poorly designed and built, and poorly trained and led. We always seem to forget that.

Their East European allies were of dubious value at best and may well have been a liability in actual combat.

Honestly, you'd have a lot of desertions on each side. It isn't what they signed up to do.

In Spain, the troops were conscripts, so when Franco made his move, the side you were on was based largely on what the commander in your area chose to do.

The only loyal troops were the Spanish Foreign Legion (who rallied to Franco) and the Popular militias, who were basically mobs. The "regulars" were not super-reliable at first.

Zorro is in the mix.
But Kane and Finger got caught actually tracing Shadow panels in the early comics, lifting characters too.

Eventually Batman became his own thing but he started off as copy. Just as the Punisher was more or less a Mack Bolan rip-off, after his initial introduction.

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy

Enough would follow orders, and enough citizens would surrender willingly that confiscation, etc., would have a pretty good head of steam going before the bullets started flying out of front doors. But then you would have a fairly dedicated core of govt lackeys, and the attendant economic collapse would keep many in uniform on the gov't side, if only to eat.

It would be bleak, and long, but in the end, you'd have wholesale fracturing and then gradual reconsolidation into regional new governments.

247 Its just math. 350Million guns in this country, 320Million people that aren't part of the Military or Fed Gov't defensive services. The feds have 5 to 7 Million people to fight for them, and advanced weapons and bases. They have to defeat roughly half of the 320Million (no women or children)
lets round down to 120Million able men ages 14 to 55 able to shoot and kill, or other forms of warfare.

when you are outmanned by a factor of 20 to 1, first off that's not happening. 2nd, as soon as the Feds tell their guys to start shooting Americans, half of them will defect to our side. Now you're outgunned 40-1. Good luck, geniuses.

249 Part II of the silly argument is that you can call up the national guard or send active army folks to shoot up American citizens. It would be very hard for the vast majority to do so, no matter how well disciplined. Again, citizen soldiers. These might be their friends and neighbors they are firing at. Would not happen. That's a big part of the reason I believe there will be no hot civil war here. I can see a mutual voluntary segregation happen, where over time conservative minded people will relocate in "red" areas and libs will gradually congregate in "blue" areas till you have a pretty hard border between the two. Then mutual governmental divorce. That seems more likely to me.

I don't doubt the government's ability to enforce a law, right or wrong, in a limited fashion but the idea that the military would be down with suppressing something like half the population seems over the top to me.

A lot of my family served in the military and none of them were mindless automatons. They served because they loved their country not because they wanted to attack it.

The first flaw is that its been 200 years since anyone fought a battle like that. But that's not even the main problem with the argument, such as it is.

The military would not be the targets of an armed rebellion against the US government. And THAT is why governments disarm their people. Not because they figure their military can't beat them, but because the people wouldn't be SHOOTING at the military.

They'll look like everyone else so what are they going to do? Just randomly shoot people? How is that going to work for them when Jane Lefty gets a forehead ventilation?

How are they going to protect the cities as well as the numerous supply lines needed to do that while also being able to project significant power into the hinterlands? This is a big fucking country and flyover country is most of it. Do they think people are just going to form up in lines and just march right at them?

They're forgetting the American Revolution. You know why we won? It wasn't because we had bigger armies, better supplies, or better generals. We didn't have any of that shit. What we had was a bunch of people willing to play dirty and who used the vast tracts of land to disappear into when the British showed up in force. We lost almost every head to head fight with the British Army for YEARS. guerrilla tactics and fading away to fight another day infuriated these British generals. They couldn't win and they knew. They wrote letters saying we can't win this we can hold cities and it means nothing.

We don't have to march on NYC or Washington, D.C. (although shelling those places into rubble would be satisfying). All they have to do is hit and fade, hit and fade and just make it an awful mess for the government to try and maintain a presence. That's not even talking about what they could do to turn the cities into hellscapes. No water and no power and the government is going to be too busy trying to maintain order in the city to do much else.

It wouldn't even take that many people to cause massive, MASSIVE damage to the government.

So Potato Joe can fart out his nonsense all he wants, but if it ever comes to shooting the government is going to find itself in a serious fight that will last years and probably decades.

On a more serious note, yes, the 1911 takes a lot of time and effort to get used to.

Glocks are pretty easy and don't require nearly as much attention.

I literally didn't fire my M1911 for over a year so I could focus on several other guns.

I picked up my M1911 a few weeks back and shot it better at the same distance that I was shooting most other pistols.

I don't think the M1911 is a particularly difficult pistol to use and mine malfunctions no more than any other pistol I have fired on a regular basis.

The American Revolution was won by a professional army (the Continental Army), the French navy, and Spanish money. Local guerrillas may have made life miserable for the Brits, but absent outside intervention eventually the rebels would have run out of money and volunteers.

311 250 Part II of the silly argument is that you can call up the national guard or send active army folks to shoot up American citizens. Leftism has become a religion complete with fake prophets.
Thus, their arguments are religious in nature and, not serious empirical attempts to understand reality. In utopia world of their minds, all would bow down to their righteousness and it is rather a sick reflection of Revelations on the left except their G_d is government that would destroy all the devils powers in Armageddon--the end.

As one person said here, I forgot who, leftists assume that violence is a volume control that can be turned up and down as the situation needs.

Jacksonian types found on the right, think of violence as on or off. If on, then Deus Vult destruction of the enemies so that peace can be obtained again. Parabellum is another example--if you want peace, prepare for war. A leftist simply would not get either saying because their minds do not work that way.

354 Reaboi is spot on.
The reason the U.S. military has trouble against insurgents is that they are fighting under absurd rules of engagement. In the standard socialist scenario, they would not be so restrained, and would instead function like the Red Army during the Russian Civil War, slaughtering with gratuitous abandon.
More, they would be followed up by the Chekists, arranging mass round ups and executions before any partisan resistance began, never mind the hostages they will collect and slaughter afterwards.

As for the constant assertion that the American military would "never" do anything like that, I refer people as I always to do what happened to the Bonus Army, and highlight that those were not "just" ordinary, everyday, Americans, but American veterans that MacArthur fired on, helped by Patton and his armored cars. And also never mind all the instances of the militia showing up to settle strikes during the Progressive Era. There is a reason the socialists and anarchists did not win that time, despite the 2nd Amendment and legal machine guns.
For that matter, never mind who exactly will have to suppress Antifa when it goes berserk following Trump's re-election.

355 However, the a smart Left has been slowly ramping up a war of 10,000 cuts through regulation and laws.

Despite dipshits like Gov. of VA, a Leftist government isn't going to confiscate guns by ordering troops or state police to go house to house.

They don't have to. As others have pointed out, they can squeeze individuals administratively to the point where the individual become an assumed law breaker.

Think of how many points of contact we have with the different levels of government. Drivers' Licences, Fed controlled bank accounts, taxes of all varieties, etc. ad infinitem.

They're not going to knock on your door to ask you to hand over your pieces; they're going to fine, deny, punish you bit by bit.

The current round of Red Flags laws is just the more aggressive example; guilty until proven innocent through a bureaucratic procedure that has no remedy or restitution. I expect many of them to be challenged and a few successfully, but that's not going to be the only avenue for destruction.

They never stop and they never fail to press on all fronts, avenues, routes. The overt ones are easy to see and defy.

The ones carried out by 100,000 office workers in state and Fed buildings are the ones 2A defenders will have the most difficult time with.

356 It's almost like they've never heard of "asymmetrical warfare."
They think that cops and soldiers are going to take out armed Bubbas and Bubba isn't going to know exactly what soft targets would bring the system to its knees in short order?

You think food and fuel is going to make it to the cities?

We entered the Vietnam War Games and took 2nd place.

363 The phrase "sovereign citizens" is an oxymoron. One cannot be both a sovereign AND a citizen. You are either a sovereign OR a citizen. There's a reason gubmint treats US citizens as chattel, owned property. "Therefore, the U.S. citizens residing in one of the states of the union, are classified as property and franchises of the federal government as an "individual entity"", Wheeling Steel Corp. v. Fox, 298 U.S. 193, 80 L.Ed. 1143, 56 S.Ct. 773

364 Lol none of the vets I served with would follow any order to fire upon American Citizens. They'd immediately join the populace. I'll put nebbishy 'tards like Vindman and Buttigieg, who would follow those orders, up against any of the Jarheads and Bubbas I know in a heartbeat.

365 40 Why is it that the leftards believe the US military will mindlessly obey orders from the left to slaughter their own friends and families?

Seriously, you folks should talk to your police /military friends. They are trained to obey authority and many, many will behave like the Ref that flags the second punch.

It's not 'go slaughter your friends' it's 'there's a bunch of guys out there with rifles (cough because I did a tyrannical thing), stop them from disrupting the legitimate authority.'

If the cops refuse to acknowledge the first punch happened (head in sand), you're a terrorist not a freedom fighter.

You may have worked up to that decision to fight the govt, but for them it's usually a snap decision and it won't go your way.

368 Funny, the rank and file military the Left claims to revere tends to come from the same places the Left would like to destroy. Like the South for instance.

Since they believe that soldiers are fascists, they think those military guys would be so mindlessly obedient they'd fire on their own family and friends and hometowns. They'd slaughter Americans like themselves without a thought if some General gave the order.

Their fantasy scenario is not only a slap in the face to Red Staters, it's also a insult to our military. I know many of the brass are now "woke" but I think the troops are, by and large, the same honorable men and women they have always been.

Is your "military friend" the West Point Commie douche? Yeah, I have no doubt that dirtbag would gladly kill Americans. And he'd get a little friendly fire himself.

375 On a related issue, earlier this week, there was a shooting at a Milwakee Brewery. Almost immediately, a shroud of secrecy descended over the entire affair. Today, it turns out the shooter was a "person of color" who had been let go and may have faulted his white coworkers for it... I'm pretty certain that it will get swept under the rug...

376 It is also likely that the soldier in the tank is Bubba's cousin.

I think any number of would-be tyrants have already choked on the fact of an armed citizenry. they would have already put us in the camps otherwise.

If they'll pull this Coup-Gate shit while Americans are still armed, what would they do to if they could disarm everyone? They wouldn't even try to hide it anymore.

377 One only needs read the history of Confederate guerrilla warfare to realize that the threat is not only real, it can cause the government real pain and suffering. Pope was tied down with over 50,000 troops by a few hundred rag tag Confederates. Forrest caused Sherman and Grant to curse the skies regularly. Mosby insured Yankee forces were never safe in northern Virginia.

Besides what makes the Leftards think they can rely on the US military?

379 The left has been denigrating the U. S. Military for over 50 years. Spitting on them, calling them baby killers, terrorists, genocidal murderers, jackbooted thugs, trying to defund them.
And yet
And yet
They also believe that, when push comes to shove in this country, the military will side with them and follow their orders.

Posted by: Mudshark at February 29, 2020 03:44 PM (qCkAJ)

381 I think Scott Adams had it right. The armed populace doesn't have to take on the military. They have to be a threat to the civilian collaborators and their families. The model to follow is the Resistance in Vichy France, not the Viet Cong. When elected officials and their families have to live in fortified compounds, their claim to represent "the people" rings hollow.
