CDC: The Question Isn't If We'll Have a Coronavirus Outbreak, But When

Does everyone remember the AKSHUALLY brigade of the media telling us three weeks ago that this was no big deal and AKSHUALLY not nearly as dangerous as the flu?

Enemies of the People.

Liberals -- including globalist NeverTrump GOPers -- are such religious maniacs on their Holy Doctrine of Open Borders that they'll gladly risk thousands of US deaths before they'll countenance travel restrictions.

"It's not so much a question of if this will happen any more, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the head of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a media briefing Tuesday.

Headlines:

Iran's Health Minister gives press conference to downplay the dangers of cornoavirus; The health minister is himself diagnosed with coronavirus shortly thereafter.

Iran's deputy HEALTH minister tests positive for coronavirus after looking shaky and unwell while he played down outbreak's dangers - as death toll rises to 15 and cases are exported around the Middle East

Iran's deputy health minister Iraj Harirchi was placed into quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus

Comes a day after he sweated his way through a press conference while insisting outbreak is under control

Iran has officially declared 95 cases and 15 deaths, but there are fears that the true number is much higher

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Iran to 'tell the truth' and cooperate with health officials over the virus

Coronavirus experts begin panicking, saying that our current containment strategies will fail.

A surge in untraceable clusters of new coronavirus patients around the globe has caused experts to warn that 'containment methods are not going to work'.

In South Korea, Singapore and Iran, clusters of infections are leading to a jump in cases of the new viral illness outside China.

...

'A number of spot fires, occurring around the world is a sign that things are ticking along, and what we are going to have here is probably a pandemic,' said Ian Mackay, who studies viruses at Australia's University of Queensland.

Italy is now on the verge of a pandemic.

Italy's coronavirus death toll climbs to 11: Four more die as number of new infections increases 45% in one day and panic-buyers strip supermarket shelves bare in Palermo

Italy confirmed four more deaths from coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11

Four new deaths were announced in Vento and Lombardy - two men and two women, the youngest was 76

Meanwhile the number of cases in the south climbed to three, all of them in the Sicilian capital of Palermo

All three infected travelled to the south from the north before a lock-down was put into place last week

Italy confirmed 95 new cases bringing the total to 322 as virus jumped to Austria, Croatia and Switzerland

Tom Cruise had planned to shoot the next Mission: Impossible movie in Italy for three weeks. But filming has been halted due to the outbreak.

Illegal border crossers are going to be a major vector of disease in the US -- obviously, no one sneaking across the border is going to wait in quarantine for two weeks. No one gets a coronavirus test before a night crossing.

And there are going to be outbreaks in illegal immigrant communities, which will then spread to the general population.

But the important thing is to pretend we don't know that and all join together in Pandemic Solidarity. We must share each other's deadly diseases equally -- that's the only Just and Equitable way in this New World Order of unhinged transnational progressivism/radical corporate archlibertarianism.

Nothing -- not even the potential for tens of thousands of deaths -- must stand in the way of the free movement of people and goods across fictitious "national borders."

That said, I want Trump to be more overtly pro-active that he's being. I don't want this downplayed or soft-played.

As Tom consiglierte said to mob boss Leo in Miller's Crossing: "I'd worry less if I thought you worried more."

Now who caused all this?

One man has a theory.

8 Outbreak sounds like a strong word, but yes I don't think we can quarantine this. On the other hand, I think because of the large number of hidden infected and observed death rate outside of China, it is many ways not that bad.

11 Ace,

While I agree that we should have robust travel restrictions and in other ways take this seriously, I don't think that the data warrant fear of a pandemic.

Americans are healthier and more fastidious than most, and our health care system, in spite of its many flaws, can deliver quality care at great speed, so the deaths that are occurring in third world counteries won't happen here.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at February 25, 2020 07:28 PM (yQpMk)

14 If you want to contain the spread of infectious diseases there is only one way to do it with any chance of having success.

Complete ban on travel to or from infected areas and total removal and quarantine on remote military bases of those infected until the epidemic has passed.

But since that will never be allowed to happen, expect a lot of sick people and deaths.

And the media and donks cheering this on for political benefit.

There was 100% correlation with a certain model curve. 100 fucking percent. Which means they were just running the model and publishing the numbers it cranked out, not even the slightest attempt to add randomness to make it look halfway good.

They do this with everything, economic data, etc, etc, etc.

101 You can prepare economically if you try.

Canned foods that you like and normally buy? Buy a few extra cans every week. If they are on sale? Stock up. Buy the stuff you normally buy and like. I have tried some generic and store brands that were awful to vile.

Stock up on paper goods like Kleenex, TP and paper towels.
Bleach is a good disinfectant, but liquid bleach turns into water in a few months. Buy Dry chlorine bleach (Clorox) or dry swimming pool chlorine.

Buy stuff you use if you are sick, soup, Gatorade, soda, crackers.

Can you get a 90 day supply of your meds? Do this right freaking now!!

Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Clean doornobs, handles, phones, etc.

News: Coronavirus is also spread via feces. So was SARS.

Trump WILL come out of this looking like a leader because he IS ONE. If it gets serious he will shut the border and protect Americans. And if the left scream about it, then he will do what he ALREADY STARTED which is to say "The Left will complain no matter what I do."

- influenza like illnesses are still on the rise and reports of flu like illnesses remain high as flu season wanes. It is higher now than at the peak of last year's severe season.

Sounds like things are beginning to accelerate 4 weeks after the 5 million Typhoid Marys left Wuhan before the 24th. About the same time as the incubation period.

141 From the profiles developed from patients so far, those that are above 60, former smokers, or otherwise compromised lung function, and those with compromised immune systems will be at risk of death or serious complications. Because of dosing, health care workers may be at a higher risk due to dealing with contamination everywhere.

The primary complication at this point that is killing people seems to be pneumonia. Right now we are also battling the annual flu season so the risk is that hospitals get overloaded.

There is also some indications that it is leaving lesions on lungs which is why the CT scans pick it up so you may have longterm issues from fibrosis.

As of yet, children and people in good health under 40 or so, are not having much of a problem with it.

Instapundit has a good roundup of sources from a variety of places that is updated frequently.

I've never worried about these before. This one's different though. Especially since it appears to be 100% engineered. And they've done everything they can to hush it. And China appears to be cremating remains 24/7. The death rate could be hovering around 10%.

The best part? You can re-contract it. Only then you die. If this mutates like most viruses, will it be less lethal, or more? I still remember my ex's Grandmother telling me stories of fleeing the East coast to CA trying to outrun the Spanish flu.

The virus might not kill you, but the people that are freaking out sure might.

The conventional wisdom about the Spanish Flu was that it caused the immune overreation (cytokine storm) and that was the reason from the increased mortality in the young and health. Your immune system overreaction kills you.

However, that view is being challenged I was reading. There was heavy wartime censorship, and concentration of people in unsanitary conditions, and one group was arguing that was the true cause of the increased mortality.

I received a flu shot and a pneumonia shot at my first visit to my new daktari a couple of weeks ago. One in one arm, one in the other.

Woke up sicker than a dog the next day, was almost functional the day after that, then my left arm started swelling and I could barely raise it. Then the swelling went down and it started itching and still itches a bit two weeks later now.If that's any indication, I should never get sick again as long as I live.

There's no vaccine for the Corona virus yet, so gigs down on the tourista end of town will remain a slight concern for the immediate future. Not many Oriental folks there, fortunately.

Interestingly, though, the beeps contained a lot of frequency content. Posted by: Some rat in the swamp at February 25, 2020 08:15 PM (2ygtH)

376 Right now, I have not seen any authoritative account that you can "reacquire" the virus. What is more likely is that the person had a relapse rather than being reinfected. It happens with infections--such as using fever reducers and then quitting--voila--infection symptoms return.

So far, it does not seem to be causing the cytokine storm for the young and healthy which the Spanish Flu did. But on the other hand, elderly patients may be much more at risk while they may have resistance to normal flu by surviving it in the past.

The major way it appears to kill is similar to the regular flu which is by the way of complications in people that are risk factors for flu complications as well. There is some talk about genetic susceptibility but so far, it is more speculation than anything.

That being said, the complications and death rate may be much higher when all is said and done for at risk patients than normal flu season which is normally around .001 to .003 or so most years. A 2% death rate would be quite substantial among at risk elderly etc. and much more like the Spanish Flu epidemic.

Places like nursing homes and memory care facilities might also be much at risk.

2) How deadly is this shit anyway? Everyone is freaking out, then I hear, no, it isn't that dangerous. I suspect (apropos of nothing) that it is really only dangerous for the very old. a 1% death rate would be most in the 80+ crowd. The young and healthy seem to be fine. or not...Either way no one seems to be saying. Like they don't know, or won't tell?

One small thought I've been having...did the Chicoms do this on purpose.

They don't care about humanity...and they have been acting a bit guilty, from what I've seen. It could be a response to Trump's economic policies.

A paranoid thought, but sometimes you need to take into account every alternative.

But why do it in Central China?

Why not India, Pakistan, or Phillipines? You could do it with some deniability there.

BUT! It had a contagion rate of 50%.

It doesn't seem that the Coronovirus has a contagion rate anywhere near as high, so we may dodge a bullet.

And don't forget: during the 2019 flu season in the US, about 16,000 people died, according to the CDC.

Yes, most did not get the flu vaccine, but no, there's no coronavirus vaccine to be had , at least so far.

So the contagion rate will drive the train.

429 China is lying about the extent of the pandemic and the death rate. Best guess 4% fatal with 18-20% needing ICU care. This is killing people in their 20s and 30s especially smokers. Doctors and nurses in China are dying from this, it is not the flu or even SARS it's worse. If you think it's nothing look what China is doing, they blockaded a city of 12 million people and they have welded doors to peoples apartments shut to keep them inside. Los Alamos lab has found this shit is highly infectious with an R.naught of 6.7 that means each sick person will infect 6.7 people. The infected can be asymptotic for up to 24 days before showing symptoms spreading this to everyone they meet.

434 A bit of the shit stirring that is going around, I would bet on posting are a) people that are truly scared and do not know much science so they are at the mercy of their sources, b) people hoping to make a killing in the market, and c) the Democratic Media which wants anything to bring OrangeMan down.

From all accounts in the Western World, the overall effects are rather mild unless you are elderly and/or have other health factors that make you a risk.

Regarding re-infection, no authoritative source for that
Regarding genetics, no authoritative source for that
Regarding youth and good looks getting milder cases, appears very likely from stats outside of China.
Regarding complications, seems to be pneumonia.
Regarding health care workers, high risk of getting it, unsure about whether viral overload such as in crowded conditions with disease carriers, might cause a higher risk.
Regarding closed in places, risk is higher--cruise ship indicates that close quarters, even with physical separation creates a higher risk of getting it.
Regarding infectiousness, this appear fairly serious as kennel cough in general is pretty infectious in dogs and horses. Long run time with slight or no symptoms in many guarantees spreading throughout the world in the near term.
Regarding mutations--no authoritative source.

So, it is a concern, especially if you are or have elderly parents, loved ones, friends, etc. Hospitals and doctors offices could very well be disease magnets and kids at school could be carriers. So isolation might be advisable at this time--but technology could make the loneliness better through video conferencing. Now is the time to set this up.

I would advise having some antibiotics and steroids at hand to fight inflammation and consult a doctor about getting a pneumonia shot if you are at risk. Also have rehydrating fluid or the stuff to mix it up with, high dose vitamin C which some evidence is that it has antiviral qualities, and plenty of toilet paper, cleaning products such as bleach and antiviral cleaners, and be prepared to both be sick. If really worried, have at least a 30 day supply of food so you do not have to get out. If elderly or at risk, you might want more.

Read up on the CDC and WHO websites and other such authoritative sources and then compare with the alternative media info. Be skeptical of both--my guess is that is not all rosy, especially for the elevated risk to the elderly, but it is not the Black Death or small pox either.

435 about 2008 I started putting things aside, buying extra TP and soap and canned soup and flour and beans and rice and I made sure I was not in debt . . . just because things were getting dicey in my opinion, and I knew something about the Argentine hyper-inflation.

So fast forward to 2012, I had a really bad accident, lost my job and wound up on my back for three months recovering.

I was really glad to have stores on hand.

Rice and beans are not fun, but they do keep your belly filled.

You can store enough rice and beans in a couple of five gallon buckets to make you hate eating rice and beans, by the way.

436 Yeah, when 90% of the population is gone, it'll be a snap finding a hotel room, spending all day wandering around the sights without all those pesky Italians in the way.

437 426, I have not seen any authoritative indications of just how the Chinese are treating this.

From some indications, they were simply piling people into areas like arenas with beds and treating symptoms rather than complications which would appear to be a new infection when it is the same.

Respiratory illnesses do not work in the fashion that you are saying--what it does appear to do in somewhat rarer cases is affect some internal organs such as the kidneys or intestinal lining from some reports. I seriously doubt it is like herpes and a persistant viral infection as other places other than China with this have not reported such. Losing face is more a problem for Chinese than dishonesty so I would take most reports from there with a grain of salt.

What is most interesting and useful is the cruise ship incubator as it would be in the conditions of great proximity, ignoring protocols for about three days, using common areas, and quite a few elderly patients. We are not seeing a death rate anywhere near what is alleged in China and apparently not a huge amount of serious complications so far.

438 421 Backwords Boy, PF Changs frozen line might be advisable for a time if you want Chinese.

439 The Spanish Flu started in Haskell County Kansas, and spread to the Army Recruits in Fort Dodge. From there, the Army spread it nationwide with troops heading to Europe. Posted by: rd

My grandfather got the Spanish Flu as a young soldier stationed at Ft Leonard Wood. He looks so young and handsome and proud in his photo in uniform. Fortunately for him and for me he survived the flu but was too sick to be sent overseas to be cannon fodder in WWI He's gone now but had some very interesting stories to tell about that time.

440 The one sounding the alarm this morning is Rod Rosenstein's sister. That's right. She's hoping the alarm bell causes voters to blame Trump.

Posted by: gayle at February 25, 2020 09:11 PM (02bqp)

441 Yes. Nancy What's her name is RR's sister.

442 Yeeearhg! What is meant by the last sentence of ace's post. "One man has a theory." Who is the man and what is the theory? Haven't we worked this out over 400 comments?

443 Media were downplaying it until Trump urged people not to panic. Then all of a sudden it's handwaving freakout time.

I don't see how the voters can be lied into blaming a man who wants to close the borders and reduce trade with China for this.

444 People, people [and 'rons and 'ettes of course]. The thing is the danger is not in getting the disease. It's in the load it could place on hospitals and the rest of the healthcare system. Not to mention the panic that would ensue if one or more cases were announced in your area. Do you really want to be on the road while people are careening from store to store? Do you really want to engage over the last cabbage?

445 He should be preparing for the worst and blaming it on China.

If it's worse than he says, he then owns it.

Dumb move politically. What the markets do in the next month won't affect the election. Millions of dead Americans will.

446 "And there are going to be outbreaks in illegal immigrant communities, which will then spread to the general population."

Yes. And you're racist for even thinking such a rational thing.

447 CDC Dr. Nancy Messonnier is Rod Rosenstein's sister. Take 'the crisis' for what it is worth.

Don't we just love the incestuous nature of our federal government?

448 Media went from downplaying it to protect the Magic Dirt Society, to blasting a "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE" narrative to tank the markets and PWN DRUMPF.

I'm telling your right now: this is going to be a more ridiculous panic than the "AFRICANIZED KILLER BEES swarming from S. America and killing our food sources" panic back in the late 90's.

China, Iran, the U.N., and the CDC are in cahoots to capitalize on the fears of stupid people (in general, and more specifically Wall Street) to tank the economy to hurt Trump.

And of course they prematurely ejaculated.

449 I am not worried, husband is not worried a bit. We don't travel to the large cities, we're in rural areas most of the time. We've been talking to people around us and not too many people are worried. They seem to believe that the media us so full of shit, they can't believe anything it says. No panic here.
