Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist EditionPastor Antonio Velasquez says that before the Trump administration announced a crackdown on immigrants using government social services, people lined up before sunrise outside a state office in a largely Latino Phoenix neighborhood to sign up for food stamps and Medicaid. No more. “You had to arrive at 3 in the morning, and it might take you until the end of the day,” he said, pointing behind the office in the Maryvale neighborhood to show how long the lines got. But no one lined up one recent weekday morning, and there were just a handful of people inside. It is fascinating that The Deep StateTM has become so pervasive that we require a "crackdown" to force the government drones to administer the laws and regulations of our country faithfully, instead of acting according to their personal political beliefs. It is insulting in the extreme to be told that it is in any way complicated to vet welfare applicants. "Are you a citizen...yes or no? "Yes? Okay, prove it." "What? No. I don't speak Spanish. Speak English please." "A passport or birth certificate is a good start." "You don't have one?" "Next!" [Hat Tip: Jay Guevara] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

For those who want to understand why PDJT's immigration policies are good things, this post is a good start. Laws enforced (don't like that? CHANGE the laws, don't just stop enforcing them), so respect for law is underscored. Less Federal benefit costs, thanks to enforcing those self-same laws (which prohibit illegal aliens from receiving benefits). Finally, Senator Romney, now there will be more control over immigration and borders so Americans will be willing to welcome more legal immigration (which is what you say you want!).

Pastor Antonio Velasquez says that before the Trump administration announced a crackdown on immigrants using government social services, people lined up before sunrise outside a state office in a largely Latino Phoenix neighborhood to sign up for food stamps and Medicaid.
++++++++++++++++ So, what's the over/under on legal status for this crowd of people? Legal immigrant or illegal alien? If illegal alien (wouldn't shock me), then how and why? I know there are sanctuary policies lots of places (I don't know about Phoenix), but if you're applying for *federal* benefits (e.g., SNAP) and you don't posses legitimate paperwork indicating your legal status, why do you get benefits? Hell, why are you allowed to even walk out the door? Why isn't there a drunk tank attached to every one of these offices? If you speak with an accent and don't have your paperwork, in you go to wait for ICE to investigate and deport you as applicable. I know I am making a leap that a fair number of these people are illegals, but it seems to me that a great way to catch these people and get them processed out is at the point of service - the welfare office, the hospital, the school registrar, etc. If you try to use services but aren't legal, out you go. So, what's the over/under on legal status for this crowd of people? Legal immigrant or illegal alien? If illegal alien (wouldn't shock me), then how and why? I know there are sanctuary policies lots of places (I don't know about Phoenix), but if you're applying for *federal* benefits (e.g., SNAP) and you don't posses legitimate paperwork indicating your legal status, why do you get benefits? Hell, why are you allowed to even walk out the door? Why isn't there a drunk tank attached to every one of these offices?"
I'm assuming these are all rhetorical questions, right? as to numbers in Phoenix, i found an article last year, written by someone who was trying to say that the problem was getting better, no need to to do anything, and who's numbers are probably way low, but still: he claimed that there were 210,000 illegal aliens living in Phoenix last year, which was much much improved over the 2007 count which found that 400,000 illegals were living in the city. logistics is the simplest, but not the primary, reason not much is done. Ever wonder how many cops it would take to arrest 200,000 people? And that's just one city, and that count is probably only 1/2 to 1/3 of how many there really are in Phoenix. If I suddenly came into Bill Gates money, I'd start up a production company to make long-form TV shows about various great books that have been ignored in the past, or overlooked. I'd hire an ensemble cast of young, hungry talent and have them do a show a year, letting go any that got popular and wanted more money.
And I'd start up a foundation to fund legal challenges to unconstitutional and insane legislation throughout the country, to get that crap off the books. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 25, 2020 11:23 AM (KZzsI) 126

This is the main thing. A change in culture where there's shame at being a leech off others, and praise for making it on your own. A culture where people view problems as an opportunity to accomplish something and defeat it on their own instead of looking to government to fix it with a new law. Maryvale. Yup. Now go into the public schools here and clean them out.
__________ Can't do that without a constitutional amendment or a radical turn-about by the SCOTUS, thanks to a 1982 Supreme Court case called Plyler v. Doe, in which the SCOTUS struck down a Texas state law that withheld state tax funds from school districts that used them for illegal alien students. The Supreme Court said that the law violated the Equal Protection rights of illegal aliens under the Fourteenth Amendment. It would be interesting to see another state challenge this ruling today. In Plyler, the court said that illegals are entitled to 14th Amendment protections, and since the state of TX could not prove that the TX law served a "compelling state interest," then TX could not deny illegal alien kids the right to an education. There are a lot more illegal aliens in TX (and every other state) today than there were in the 1980's, and they are costing U.S. taxpayers significantly more to educate, since many of them don't speak English and a lot of them are behind grade and need remedial help. The Plyler court said that illegal alien kids have the right to an education, but the fact is that every country these kids are coming from has schools of its own, so these kids could get educated in their home countries, if they had remained there. Why do illegal alien kids have a "right" to be educated in the U.S., at the expense of U.S. taxpayers? And why is it not "a compelling state interest" to enforce our laws and not incentivize more illegal immigration to the U.S., which is what allowing illegal alien kids to get "free" public school educations in the U.S. does. And why is it not "a compelling state interest" to save American state taxpayers the billions of extra dollars they are forced to pay out every year educating the children of illegal aliens who are breaking our laws, and in many cases, working off the books and not obeying our tax laws or paying taxes themselves? It would be difficult to think of a reason for a law that is more "compelling" than enforcing the rule of law, and preventing American taxpayers from being screwed out of billions of dollars every year. But anyway, unless or until another state decides to challenge Plyler, we're stuck paying to educate half the Third World's kids. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at February 25, 2020 11:37 AM (k4dH2) 213

Oregon is starting to let the mask drop. The State now officially pays for medical care for the children of illegals - I guess they figure that kids are too photogenic to criticize the program. Unofficially, the State pays for Spanish-speaking health clinics around the state - I'm sure those clinics are very scrupulous in demanding proof of legal residence. /sarc The Oregon House just passed a proposed amendment to the state constitution "establishing the obligation of the State to ensure every resident of the State access to cost-effective, clinically appropriate and affordable health care." It was not created by Nature, nor God, it is inherently created by man. Hell, even the vote is not a Right. Its a power, or privilege. It can't be a right because it is dependent on your form of Government. By calling it a Right when they passed that amendment, they diluted the definition of what a right was, to the point where now anything can be called a right, including forcing others into virtual slavery, to give YOU stuff. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 25, 2020 11:27 AM (KZzsI) For conservatives ("liberals", really), one's economic condition is a state, not a property. You can be in a state of poverty, but no one is truly a "Poor Person" in their very being. For the progressives and totalitarians, your class is your being. You are not just in poverty, you ARE a poor person. To the progressive, that shame is seen as directed against The Person, and is considered wrong. To the conservative, that shame is seen as directed against the condition, and is considered correct. Posted by: Warai-otoko at February 25, 2020 11:47 AM (Ct55T) 267
212, Plyer v. Doe is an example of court overreach due to alleged compassion to the "other". Like Bastiat mentions though in his broken windows fallacy, that money spent on illegal immigrants is then not being able to be spent on citizens. The seen is that illegal immigrant children were not able to go to school at the public's expense. The unseen is that resources were diverted from the education of citizens, often at the expense of the poorest citizens, to educate illegals. The increased tax burdens were also unfairly laid upon citizens which can prevent and delay future family formation.
What the Court believed would happen is that the federal government would pick up the tab which they did not. That is why the court should leave policy to elected branches and stick to constitutional law as it is written. Effectively, what has resulted is an inversion of the 14th where illegals are more important as a suspect class than citizens which is in effect evil. This is reflected in treating illegal criminals better than domestic criminals in terms of release, charges filed, etc. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and the Courts have added quite a few paving bricks themselves. Maryvale. Yup. Now go into the public schools here and clean them out.
I live in an area of CA where there's still many agricultural areas nearby. When my mother's dementia started getting worse, she started falling or having other accidents. My first trip, foolishly was driving her to the nearest hospital to our South barely 7 minutes away. I was in the ER with her for nearly 8 hours to sew up her leg. The illegals were literally out the door. Entire families filled both waiting rooms. Any female between 15 and 40 was pregnant, had a baby in their arms and kids ran up and down the corridors. They were all there not for any emergency care, but colicky babies, sore throats, cuts, bruises etc. All of them with room temperature IQ's, each one would take 20 minutes to have somebody explain to them in Spanish ebonics not to leave the baby in the car overnight next time. I swear, some of them even drinking 40's sitting there, because it was nice and cool inside. I was indignant, and had to wait hours to get a 90 year old lady's leg attended to. The next time such an occasion arose, I drove the 50 minutes North (against the commute traffic, luckily) to Mountain View, was met at the door by an attendant with a wheelchair, and mom was whisked right into a room. Funny how all the Tesla driving, latte sipping lefties have managed to shoo those pesky workers away up here! This crap has got to stop. I don't see how the hospitals can stay in business - at least the ones not in the heart of Silicon Valley. Posted by: clutch cargo at February 25, 2020 11:51 AM (8B6Ng) 285

You don't have to round up and deport every person here illegally.
Just check citizenship/alien status in every gov't encounter. Getting a job. Buying property. Submitting any kind of gov't paperwork (DMV, etc.). Getting pulled over by police. You get caught here illegally? You get deported. Immediately. You get caught subverting that policy? (Hiring illegals, making fake IDs, etc.) Then YOU get penalized very, very heavily. If you're a corporation? Your charter gets revoked. Private person? Fines and jail time. Make it so that illegal aliens simply cannot function in society, and they will stop trying to get in. And Constitutional scholars, when you can get them to be honest and not on the record, often classify the 14th Amendment as the Amendment that rewrote the entire Constitutions on it's image. The biggest, and most subtle problem, is that the enabling clause appears to contradict much of the Bill of Rights, leading to a situation where only the Supreme Court can make a ruling as to which of the Amendments is going to apply in any given situation. And that is what has led us to where we are today - Ruled by the Judiciary, not the Legislature. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 25, 2020 11:53 AM (Kpl3J) 298

Dairies around here hire illegals for milking jobs, etc. Its really low-skill labor. They always get paperwork claiming the guys are legally here but... everyone knows they are illegal. They barely speak any English, etc.
But they work hard, and if they cannot make it to work, they have a Padron, usually an elder in the family, who will provide a cousin or brother who can fill in that day. And American young people? Don't work very hard. Don't show up some day without any explanation and don't offer someone to fill in on the days they skive off to go hang out or something. waiting rooms. - - - - I had the same experience in Northern VA. Had to take my toddler son to the ER on a Friday night due to a complication with a heart cath he had in the same hospital early that morning. 261, Romeo13,
I absolutely agree with your post. What the Left has done is take the idea of the family where literally the organization is Marxian--the parents provide for their children and try to extend that to the population at large. What they do not get is that the family ties and family progeneration is ideally done with familial love which is impossible to extend to the entire population. The left, and I include libertarians in that btw, believe that mankind is perfectible and naturally good. Thus, they support policies repeatedly that have demonstrated failures in the past by the argument that this time we will do it right. What is wrong is that they try to impose their reasoning on nature rather than reasoning in accordance with nature and culture. Thus, the leftists require coercion for the person's own good and the libertarians are dumbfounded that people can be selfish, evil, and self interested. A true conservative that is educated in history, culture, and human behavior, grounds their policies and expectations in empirical evidence of how people really behave rather than "principles". Show me is a conservative value because it relies on wisdom accumulated through humanity's tragic history but is open to a better way if it can be done safely. Posted by: torabora at February 25, 2020 11:50 AM (DwLwB) One of the first things you'll notice in the islands (my work used to take me there frequently) is zero latinos. At least for me, not hearing Spanish all day comes as a bit of a shock, and takes some adjustment. At least Pigeon English is English, and I grew up with that anyway. Sure, the islands have their own particular set of issues and deadbeats. I always figured if I hit hard times, I'd make sure to save enough $ for a ticket to the big island, because one could live in a tent, fish and pick fruit, while only needing a blanket, t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. As someone who went through the immigration process with my now wife from fiancee visa all the way through citizenship, it really irritates me how much immigration law us ignored throughout the govt. I mean we had to jump through all kinds of hoops, and it still took almost a year from applying for the fiancee visa until she received it. I mean, really, they wouldn't even let her visit while her fiancee visa was pending, which is understandable. But to see how of the law has been ignored really burns us up. We are relieved as a family that someone is finally taking this at least somewhat serioisly. Go Trump!

However, an Atheist handling a prayer list seems more of a bureaucratic function (Get those reports in!!) than anything else. C.S. I'd guess in many districts in California the illegals and their anchor babies (which I guess are citizens) number at LEAST 30% of the students, in many cases their language skills in ANY language are so poor that they get assessed as 'special needs' and get a county IEP and a whole lot of specialized teaching, and how much in property taxes do you think their families are contributing? 327, They network. They pass around employers that are amenable to off the books work, they pass around stolen identification, they are enabled by supportive "community organizers" working for non-profits and churches, etc. The first movers then feel an obligation to help bring others to their community which then builds an alternative society. Most areas that immigrants are coming from today have weak and corrupt governments so social networking remedies the lack of government. They bring that with them.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 25, 2020 12:04 PM (KZzsI) Funny you should mention this - that very thought crossed through my mind a couple of days ago. My town had nearly zero homeless just 5 years ago. But now that Silicon Valley is jumping, the Latte Teslas are building like mad and invading, and bringing with them all the detritus they bring everywhere. So, homeless have invaded many areas, and literally set up camp anywhere they want. Since this used to be rural, there's lots of lawns and stuff in front of say, Burger King. And right there was a homeless encampment, each and every one of them had either a chihuahua or a pit bull. How much food does that big dog eat? And how is it you're sitting there, mid 20's, with your guitar, dog and iPhone? Heck it's even hard to be a decent Christian (so I don't try). As I was taking my mom to church last Sunday, some idiot, drunk on a bike rides right in front of me and stops right in the handicapped parking spot. So, I wait for him to get off his bike (holding a tall can of malt liquor) move his sorry ass so I can get my mom into her wheelchair. They also had people waiting for them who would guarantee employment. And they were all pretty healthy. Actually, there's nothing funny about common sense.

China worked hard to control the supply chain for the world, and WallStreet was glad to take profit (and bribes) from the China slave market. Trump has aggressively fought China/WallStreet as he tries to rebuild America.
So as Coranavirus exposes our dependence on China for all things that make life here good, Trump has a good case against WallStreet selling us out for their bottom dollar (anti-Liberty) greed, avoiding the costs of Liberty and profiting off China slavery. "Free Trade" without morality ... Liberty has a price, we let WallStreet sell America out to communism ... slavery and pollution and all sorts of abuse/genocide/corruption were fine as long as "FreeTraderGamblers" got rich (and wars and policy was set to serve them, not American Liberty). Bannon does a good rant on this in his interviews ... "CCP are gangsters". We can never again let China or others control our supply chains ... they have been at war against US via the economy and schools ... the "reset" won't be easy ... https://tinyurl.com/ulkumxj Posted by: illiniwek at February 25, 2020 12:15 PM (Cus5s) 379

BTW, they're IDENTICAL to the regular DL with one very small letter change. At first, the DMV and state were all excited and posted data on how many DL's they handed out. But they wised up a couple of years ago and bury the data. Last I saw, they had surpassed 1M DL's. With a 50% failure rate. So, if you do the math (not here, that's a barrel penalty) the elderly those who don' need no stinking license or the zillions of youngsters - well the entire 11-12M illegals supposedly in the country are right here. I got a dashcam a year ago because it's getting so insane out there. I've dodged fences and lawnmowers and garbage cans on the freeway. They buy throw away cars, and simply leave them after an accident. No need to register or insure a $300 2004 honda civic. Crash and walk. I can't tell you how many 2017 registration stickers I see (we have different colors each year) It's almost a game with me. That and Teslas. Like slug-bug only different. Posted by: Nevergiveup at February 25, 2020 12:18 PM (nRk/c) Gee, who could have guessed? As I mentioned a couple of days ago, my biggest fear is this could be the October surprise. You just know there's been nonstop meetings on how to spin this as Trump's fault. If they can just get rid of that pesky Canada/China connection. It'd be so much better if this was developed in a Russian lab so Trump could kill all the blacks and gays. Still, if there's a full-blown pandemic going on, who knows how people's judgement will be if they're scared to death. The government will save you. Bernie promises. "Confusing the (very simplified reduction of)
physical tasks required with being competent/successful at a profession is maybe 5th grade level logic." Posted by: Lizzy right ... and he thinks the programmers are so brilliant ... and they are good at what they do, but the power of Google or Amazon is partly in the market dominance ... Amazon was a "go-go" momentum stock, with the nation buying "the internet" via the AMZN proxy (and a few others ... see Google Archipelago). So AMZN could drive competitors out of business since they could get buy with losses for 20 years, as they had American "investors" believing in the dream. Much of market gains poured into a few stocks (FAANGS) ... and those few bought out competitors. Anti-trust was thrown out the window ... America threw money at the perceived winners, DC gave theme immunities, academia funded much of their research ... now we look at the whirlwind and wonder WTF happened to our liberty ... how are these 20 somethings controlling our free speech, Google manipulating election outcomes via contrived search results? I wouldn't call him bleeding heart, that's a man who's sincere about his desire to help them for real. They say they need money for food, so he gives food and other things they need.
Of course they really just want money for drugs, just about all panhandlers do, which is why they throw his help away. But that's not the giver's fault - he does his best to help them, and in a way that will NOT support their drug habits, which actually is also helping them. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 25, 2020 11:29 AM (Kpl3J) I'd say that behavior is almost definitional for "bleeding heart". Someone sincere in their wish to help, but so incredibly naive that it is humorous. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 25, 2020 12:30 PM (KY5iq) 451

Markets are cyclical. Ours has been due for a major correction since 2015-2016. About every 7 years. Also, inflated stock and asset prices only means that central banks are pumping them up with cheap and free money, which makes everyday goods and services increase. We have inflation, the government just calculates it to look like we don't. Same as it ever was since around 1994.

126 If I won the lottery, I would buy a decomissioned aircraft carrier and turn it into an Air Museum on the Philly waterfront, to compliment the USS New Jersey & USS Olympia. There's a few small local air museums that together would make a great collection of exhibits.
-- The USS John F. Kennedy is still docked down at the Philly Navy Yard. Not museum quality but not too far to tow it for your purposes.... Posted by: Matt Hooper at February 25, 2020 12:36 PM (t8hbk) 455

The reason that the ERs are full and not the Urgent Cares is that the ER is free and urgent care has a co-payment. So in CA they don't even bother to get insurance.

I remember being stunned about a decade ago overhearing the son of a next-door neighbor and his friends in Orange
County, CA -- all attending community college and children of middle-to-upper-middle class parents whom they still lived with--talking about how they needed to get up early in the morning to go get their food stamps. An-f*cking-believable ... I'm guessing they were selling them for drugs or something, but they didn't need any food stamps. 99.9% yes. Why 99.9%? Well ...
Back in the 80's I taught polsci at a Big 10 school -- wasn't like it is now. I had given a short mention of "private bills" in congress and how they were used to grant citizenship, usually to athletes and dissidents from certain countries without making them stand in line. After class a young woman anxiously asked me what else I knew about them, which was not much. I asked why. Turns out her parents got out of Cuba when she was an infant and illegally into the US. They raised her as an anglo (she presented as WASP as anyone at that school) and never told her where she or they were from. She didn't know until she had to supply proof of citizenship for a scholarship application. and her parents finally told her. She was scared to death. Now, I had done military service and private sector work before doing this teaching thing, and while a certain percentage of the students fancied themselves expert liars, none of them really were. I also had some familiarity with the kind of bare fear she was showing. I'm not saying that she _couldn't_ have been a psychopath-level liar (I heard a credible story about one of those in the military), but in a case like that I'd like to see someone passed up the chain somehow. Yes, they'd try to game that too, but I like to think we could screen for that, and would do so pretty strictly. I'd also question how much of a "safe country" Cuba was. :I But the point is not that this is a true story (though it is), or that I myself am not a pathological liar (I'm not), but that such a thing is at least possible, and should be allowed for, even despite the gaming that would be attempted. That said, I do in fact favor the kind of deportations we had under Eisenhower in the 50s. Round 'em up and send 'em home. Finish the Wall (I served in Berlin, that one would do for a start, though I read that Israel's is better). MY papers are in order (RealID and DoS passport card, native-born).
