Gun Thread: Northam is an Idiot [Weasel]

NIAI scaled.jpg
But, but, but... I had a mandate! - R. Northam (VA - Idiot)

This sign says it all, and I chuckle each time I pass it in Central Virginia on the way back and forth to the farm. It seems the Governor's gun control ideas aren't quite as popular as he thinks they are! Let's find out more below, shall we?

Virginia
For those of you not paying attention, the leftist gun-grabber's dream legislation, H.B. 961, bit the dust in Virginia last week. This despicable piece of legislation would have, among other things, prohibited the sale of "assault weapons" and silencers, and made illegal the possession of magazines with a capacity greater than 12 rounds.

What happened? Well the grassroots 2nd Amendment Sanctuary movement and more than 20,000 gun rights advocates showing up in Richmond may have had something to do with it. Personally, I don't think Governor Retard's commitment ever waivered, but when the noxious mess cleared the Virginia House of Delegates and made it's way to the Senate, it lost key Democrat support and was referred to the Crime Commission for "study" until next year. There are, however, a number of other anti-2nd Amendment measures which could make it into law this year. Virginia Democrats apparently lost no time in rewarding Sheriffs for their perceived act of defiance towards Richmond by voting down a 3% wage increase. Can you say retribution?

Here are links to the Virginia Shooting Sports Association (VSSA) and Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) press releases on the story.

Does this mean it's dead, Jim? No. No, it is not dead.

It means the liberals kicked the can down the road because they didn't have the votes this time. Just as sure as .45ACP > 9mm, it'll be back as soon as the lunatics and retards see a chance to pass it. Assholes like Bloomberg and Soros, as well as losers like the Mom's Against Everything Cult play the long game, and you will see this material again, which is why it's imperative to remain vigilant.

Stay engaged. If you are in Virginia, and anywhere else for that matter, do not become complacent. Keep your eye on the local ball, and make sure your state representatives know your position on the 2nd Amendment. Do not find yourself in a position where your rights hang in the balance by the narrowest of margins. Civic engagement can work, but you have to participate.

Lurker Chris sends us this Second Amendment anthem music video with footage from rallies in VA and CT, and adds that all publishing royalties go to Virginia Citizens Defense League, Connecticut Citizens Defense League and the NRA. Thanks Chris!

Practice, Training, and Looking Cool
Here's a good article from the Mid-South Shooters Blog. I've been known to harp on practice and particularly how you practice and the linked article makes some great points (if its working) along those very lines. Defensive preparedness isn't about having the latest and greatest tacticool gear, it's about having the skills to put rounds on target and stopping a threat. That's it. No one is going to score your target or otherwise admire your bad-assery if God forbid you ever have to use your gun. Style points most definitely do not count. Your goal is to stop the threat, period, and your practice and training should be designed with that objective in mind.

When you go to the range, practice drawing from a holster and engaging the target if that is allowed. Start slowly and work on your speed from there. Practice magazine changes or reloading with a speed loader, and remember to practice with your non-dominant hand. Be safe, but be creative and mix it up. Remember, in a defensive situation your target is unlikely to be standing still at exactly 7 yards and permit you to make carefully aimed shots.

What is your routine when you go to the range? Do you think it prepares you for a real-world situation, or a bullseye competition?

'Nuff said (for today).

It looks like our pal Scuba_Dude's gun-buying rampage continues!

I finally took possession of my first rifle. A Savage 110 Tactical in .308, with a Harris bipod and a Nikon Prostaff 4-16x42SF Matte BDC scope.

Whoa there, Hombre! That's a nice looking rifle! Congratulations!

Well here's a real treat, sent in by an anonymous lurker.

flintlocks scaled.jpg

Those are a couple of fine looking weapons, and our anonymous lurker pal included the following:

Here’s our favorite boomsticks out on the hunt a few weeks ago for flintlock deer season. We hunt completely 18th century, including all our clothing and equipment.

My buddy’s German jaeger rifle, in .62 caliber, is on the left. These early 1740s style rifles were the first kind made in America, by German gunsmiths setting up shop in Pennsylvania and Virginia and within a few decades they had evolved into the more familiar and recognizable long rifle, like mine on the right. It’s a Lancaster County style, in .50 caliber with a swamped barrel and a Native paint job. Don’t think about calling it a Kentucky long rifle!

The American long rifle was born in Pennsylvania. 18th century backcountry hunters started asking for lighter, longer rifles more suited to carrying in the old growth forest on extended hunts, rather than the heavy, short rifles the German smiths used to make for upper class gentlemen killing deer and boar in the managed forests of Germany from tower stands for a day’s hunt.

So the jaeger rifle stretched, and became lighter and smaller caliber and the barrel became swamped to save weight as it lengthened.

And before long, the rifles became useful for killing more than deer, but they were never, contrary to myth, a war winning weapon in the Revolutionary War. They were good for specific tasks, such as skirmishing and the woods warfare in the backcountry, but the musket and bayonet equipped the rank and file of the Continental army who slugged it out toe to toe with the redcoats on the farms and fields that became battlefields and eventually won the war. But the rifle was there too, at Trenton, Brandywine, King’s Mountain, and Yorktown, as well as the hundreds of nameless firefights out in the backcountry woods, against native warriors who were capable of horrific tortures if they captured you alive. They too often carried rifles, in defense of their homes and their way of life

Are those cool, or what? And I'd nearly forgotten my obsession with owning a flintlock. Thanks anonymous lurker!!

Our pal DBCooper sent in the following target picture:

dbcooper LR scaled.jpg

Wow! Nice group! I'm always cautious about asking people what distance they were shooting when they send in a target picture, but... what distance?

This afternoon, I was shooting at 1075 yards with my 6.5 Creedmoor.

Huh? What? What did you say?

This afternoon, I was shooting at 1075 yards with my 6.5 Creedmoor. First 3 were slightly low and about 16 inches right. I dialed up .3 and left .4 mils and fired 3 rounds. Spotter called two hits swinging steel and a miss right. Drove down to the target and looked like only one hit. The hits are 1/4 inch apart. I've never done that. That was a fun fluke...

Holy Shit! That's some nice shooting, brother! My only suggestion is to try and use the entire target next time... you know, spread the bullets around some.

11 Evening Horde.

Bought ammo AND went to the range. Twofer!

More slow draws and double taps. Still working out some issues with my grip. Normally, the range does not allow holster draws but there was no one else on any lanes so the RSO allowed it.

I love this retired gig.

25 What do I have to report this week? Test fired the Ishapore 2A1 Rifle in 7.62 x 51mm. Very happy with that, it groups very well at 100m using standard ball 147gn ammo with the poor iron sights. Finally got the MG08/15 working on cloth and also steel belt. My ammo (8mm Hungarian from 1953) is not always firing on first strike but hey I have cases and cases of it. The filth e-mailed me today saying my import permit is approved, so things are good.

If you have already used percussion rifles, which are great, try a flintlock. They take the shooter to another level of involvement in the hobby. And they represent my favorite period of American history.

54 Gubs! Thanks Weasel.

A guy at the range on Thursday had a 6.5 something-something modified Ackley?? "Precision rifle" competition equipment.

My general ignorance is profound, specialized almost, when it comes to long-distance shootin'. But I always see cool new s**t at the range.

Anyway, we chatted a bit and he was a long-distance version of me: I have no interest in static/bullseye competition, much prefer movement/action/steel/interactive targets. He said precision rifle was more like that.

55 Have to ask this. Have any of you noticed that just when you have some money saved up for something 'special' a gub becomes available at an insane low price and you have that money just sitting there, and if that is the case do you also buy 1300 rounds of ammo? I mean there it was and all.

56 44 ... "After 20 rouns, my friend and I managed to achieve a consistent 12" group at six feet."

58 Yay Gun Thread !

Actually got in some range time today; Crazy springlike weather here, so I took the various carry pieces over to Shooting Buddy's outdoor range and did my usual off-season routine of a couple mags / cylinders from each.

I think the weeks of penny-on-the-barrel dryfire drills have helped a little, didn't have a single one fall off the sheet of printer paper on the cardboard silhouette ! Sweet !

Now a question for the Horde's collective knowledge:
My oldest pistol is a steel-framed Colt Commander in matte nickel that I bought when I turned 21.
For years the nickel has been getting grubbier and grubbier looking, until today, when it is getting fairly deplorable looking.

How to clean it up ?

Standard solvents and toothbrush have failed.

59 Many thanks to the anonymous lurker for the photo and description of his 18th-century rifles. He's right that rifles weren't a game-changer during the Revolutionary War, but they did play a big part in the victory at New Orleans in 1815.
And no, I didn't get to the range this week. Winter weather really limits what we can do here. But now that the snowdrops are popping up and the days are getting longer, we'll be back at the range soon.

61 A pretty good argument against the "gotta have 'em all" syndrome. I don't even really like the fact that I own both .380s an 9mms.
-------

Prior to the tragic canoe accident, I had a rifle which would comfortably chamber either of two rounds. The ever-so-slightly smaller case would result in a dangerous headspace situation. Visually, it would be *very* difficult to distinguish between the two, and since (pre-accident) I owned both, I examined the headstamp on each round as they went into the magazine.

64 Excellent thread as usual, Weasel.

So, as to range time: I shot a 200 yard high power match with the M1 Garand yesterday.

Two of what would appear to be diametrically opposed things happened: I was pleased with my shooting, though my scores were not good.

Why, you ask? (i'm writing this, so, just play along!)

Thanks for asking!

I made two mistakes when shooting yesterday:

I assumed I had the rifle dialed in and I didn't check my shots through a spotting scope. (partially because i was there just to have fun and didn't want to put too much pressure on myself. I'd only shot my Garand one other time in a match and that was a couple of years ago.)

All of my shots were decently grouped left, most of them in the scoring area but a good 4 to 6 inches off the black. The few fliers were just that, fliers. Also, there was no vertical stringing of shots, which I believe means my trigger discipline was good, even during the rapid fire.

So, next match: Sight will be adjust and a decent spotting scope will be employed.

I also, for the first time, employed the sling while shooting, which was a big help. Took me a bit to get it figured out and had to crib from the guy next to me. Worked great, though.

By the way, the guy I scored for: First 15 shots, 11 in the black and and 4 in the 8 zone. Marvelous shooting on his part.

68 I actually had both .380 and 9mikemike with me the other day, didn't take the 9mm out (no time), but did do some steel (and aluminum cans on the berm) with the CZ-83, from the holster, with movement. Fun fun little gun.

I keep my ammo pretty well segregated so haven't worried about mixing 'em up for shooting. Of course as a reloader/brass scrounger it's annoying how similar 9mm/.380 cases look, but since I reload both no problem.

The CZ-83 throws the brass up to 40 feet, ridiculous. My recovery rate for that brass rarely reaches 50%.

The MilSpec (I have one) is supposed to be the service pistol more/less as it was in final configuration prior to replacement by the M9, though not sure if the enlarged ejection port, larger front sight, and one other feature ever were found on military issue units.

The "GI" was SA's WWII 1911. Discontinued a few years back.

After Weasels report on his new 22 rifle, I dug out my book and checked my 22 obsession. 16 working firearms, 2 needing restoration or repairs. I find that no matter what else I take to the range, i ALWAYS take a couple of 22s. 85 Speaking of black powder firearms, today I picked up a used Rogers and Spencer cap and ball revolver. They have a reputation for accuracy and reliablity among C and P target shooters but were discontinued some years ago. This was the first I saw and got to handle. I know the previous owner and he told me it had only seen about a hundred rounds through it. Judging by the immaculate condition and tight lock up, he wasn't kidding. And he was selling for a very fair price.

The Rogers and Spencer has a very different feel or balance compared to usual Colts and Remingtons. I hope to get to the range this week and see what I can make it do.

90 And now it's time for Stuff I Like, a random series of unsolicited, uncompensated product plugs. This time I Like the Ergo Roller reloading press handle from Inline Fabrication.

At first I thought that $65 for a bent piece of steel rod and a plastic handle was silly. But after sizing about 500 pieces of USGI '06 brass, it may be the best $65 in my loading shop. Like a lot of folks who work behind a keyboard, I have a touch of arthritis/RSI in my hands. The problem with the regular handle on my Rockchucker is that the ball knob forces you to flex your wrist pretty far at the bottom of the stroke. Holding the knob with a rag helps but the roller handle lets you keep your wrist locked. I haven't tried but I imagine you could work it wearing a wrist splint. It's a couple of inches longer than the original handle for a little more mechanical advantage. Which is also a slight drawback since you need to sit a little farther away from the bench so you don't hit your knee.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at February 23, 2020 07:33 PM (Z+IKu)

Gidday, I thought that perceived recoil was actually less than the standard 174gn .303 I normally use. As I am pretty much recoil proof I was not noticing, but thought that the Ishapore was pleasant to use. No wallowing in recoil or anything like that. But using 147gn versus 174gn projectile may account for that. On a unrelated note pulled all my Lee Enfields/.303s/etc out of the lockers and test tried them in the new ex-army gun racks I have for my gun room re-fit. Amongst the Ross's, Lee Speeds, Remington Lees, No4, No5, No8, etc I spotted a SMLE that had the rare long butt. Did not know I had one , as in the locker you cannot tell the OAL of the rifle but in the rack next to others it stood out. Yay me.

It's really infuriating, and alienating, and revealing (in a bad way) about the level of ignorance and bigotry among so many Americans, and the erosion of our institutions.

rhomboid,
That's a tough choice. Get something to match the look of the Yellow Boy or the Blackhawk. As we both know, the Blackhawk will be more versatile since it can handle any sane reload and is a gun to pass on to future generations. On the other hand, those Colt look alikes are so darn cool.

Maybe get one of each?

151 Almost bought a nickel Detective Special (or Cobra? old kind) 2 years ago, and learned m'self up on nickel plating, but have forgotten everything. What Max Ordinate says, though - always be careful about removing material.

I've even gone to rare and sparing use of lead-removal cloth on the stainless revolvers. Figure the scorching marks are unimportant, and down the road I can restore them to "pretty" by having a smith do a full ultrasonic cleaning, if I want.

173 It pays to keep your eyes open for bargains. I've become enamoured of the 41 magnum but commercial ammo is damn expensive. I am set up to reload with cast lead bullets, as always. But today ran across an estate item. Ended up bringing home about 500 rounds of Remington jacketed 41 mags and at least that many plated bullets for hand loading. All for less than a fifth of what it would have cost at the store (assuming they even had the items).

Some of the ammo is at least twenty years old but remains bright. I've used surplus ammo much older with no problems and even found some of my reloads that had got covered over in the garage for more than 20 years. It all shot perfectly.

193 Range Report...

I like AR15/10 style rifles, especially when chambered in large, "esoteric" cartridges. So, I was thrilled at finally getting a chance to put some rounds through my 475 Bishop Short Magnum. The cartridge is reputed to be the largest, most powerful round that can fit in an unmodified AR-10 chamber. It drives a 390 gr. bullet at 2,500 FPS, delivering about 5,000 FPE (measured 15' from the muzzle). I built the lower myself, and purchased the complete upper from Bishop Ammunition Inc. The most amazing aspect of this rifle is the lack of punishing recoil. Combine a heavy gun (~11 pounds with scope and loaded with 7 rounds), gas operating action and a good compensator, and you produce a safari grade rifle that kicks no harder than a M1 Garand. And boy did it make the 200 yard steel target ring!

197 The most amazing aspect of this rifle is the lack of punishing recoil. Combine a heavy gun (~11 pounds with scope and loaded with 7 rounds), gas operating action and a good compensator, and you produce a safari grade rifle that kicks no harder than a M1 Garand. And boy did it make the 200 yard steel target ring!

There are varieties of toothpaste which can be used for fine polish also. here's a interesting (kinda) list of the abrasive index of sundry brands:

226 RI Red, two things.

First, the entire "levels of scrutiny" framework is fallacious, and "judge-made law" (basically made-up rules for how you can do things the constitution says you *can't* do).

Second, even accepting the framework for sake of discussion, as you point out, treating the 2A at a lower level than the rest of the Bill of Rights, or voting, is absurd on its face.

One schtick last night's lawyer used that I liked - she'd summarize how her firm/NGOs would show up/write/comment regarding proposed unconstitutional 2A infringements (county boards, city councils, state legislatures), basically saying "you can't do that" - and their response is always "we don't care".

There's a lot more, and a lot more disturbing and menacing significance, to that little humorous formula she used than most of the audience probably understood. A few did understand, and were shaking their heads.

i had enough saved up to maybe buy a new to me gub at the beginning of the month, but, between VD weekend, and this, our 19th anniversary weekend (today in fact), i spent it all on spoiling the chief gun owner of the house...

seems like it was a wise investment on my part.

grilled elk chops on both Frydays, and a fancy, sit down dinner last Caturday at Nick and Stef's steakhouse DTLA (Patina Group)

i dressed up in long pants and a tucked in shirt, we took her new C-300, and, for the first time in too many years, i paid for dinner. (and a corsage: 1st one she's had since Junior High)

money well spent, IMHO.

255 Re the nickel plating issue--assuming that the plating has not worn through,

A) Try Flitz, nice polish designed for sensitive surfaces such as silver and nickel plating. Often used for jewelry.

B) avoid ultrasonic cleaners as I suspect that your plating will come off.

C), you can try regular pink pencil erasers like they use in school, the white ones can be less abrasive.

D)Try Birchwood Casey's Lead Removal cloth (designed especially for the fronts of revolver cylinders) and mildly abrasive.

E) Have the thing replated by a pro. Nickel plating is easier to obtain than chrome due to environmental regulations. The new electroless nickel is a soft matte finish and quite nice on an old revolver.

I would avoid brasso because usually the piece is copper plated before the nickel as a final finish. Brasso getting under the nickel would cause problems. Similarly, any ammonium based products are a no go for nickel for similar reasons.

I have jewelers rouge in different grades but Flitz would be my choice unless you don't mind the risk in replating it.

271 The whole scrutiny issue came about because the Supreme Court was casting about for a principled way to deal with First Amendment protections after they declared them through the back door in Schenk and Gitlow.

Mix in Carolene Products and basically the different scrutiny levels allowed the Supreme Court to retreat from disfavored constitutional protections such as property and perhaps the 2A, and instead focus in insular minority groups--prisoners, aliens, racial groups, etc.

As a result, much of the Supreme Court jurisprudence has become where the Supreme Court says that the plain words of the Constitution do not mean what they say via the magic of judicial tests.

Judiciaries always have to figure out ways to create general rules for lower courts to follow which is especially complicated in common law countries due to precedent. These are judicial tests.

In addition, the regression to the mean in judicial opinions mean that most are cobbled up to gather the sufficient number of justices to support a majority opinion. Thus, we get endless balancing type opinions rather than bright line tests.

272 I've seen this gun referenced as a great starter gun. Any thoughts? I'm concerned that it's only .22 LR, although that makes it cost effective to shoot...

Nothing wrong with a .22 as a first gun but I hear (reddit, so take that for what it's worth) that the S&W 15/22 has had a few safety issues for which Project Appleseed has disallowed it for use in their classes. Maybe consider a Ruger 10/22.

278 82 So far most all of the gun grabbing crap in WA state has been defeated.
They will not ever stop.
One of the few R reps got one killed by filing 120 amendments to the bill which none of the lazy bastards wanted to even read much less debate or vote on.
There's still time for the legislature to come up with something stupid, lawless and unconstitutional though. They need watching and defeating.
Posted by: Winston a dreg of society at February 23, 2020 07:37 PM (3vrTU)

NO!

In WA state, unfortunately this is NOT true, yet anyway.

The Seattle Times, as anti-2A as any paper in America reported nearly everything died in session.

NOPE.

WASH STATERS, WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW!!!!

This is an extension of the work done by regular local citizens, coordinated through waguns.org
Anyone can join for free, if you do, you have access to the 2A forum, where this is coordinated.

It is truly amazing what a group of regular people can do against many local billionaires, and a corrupt local press that makes CNN look honest.

Nothing shows the contempt of Democrat members than the disgusting MAG BAN bill, that was defeated (as reported by the Times) but has been RESURRECTED in the Finance Committee (exactly, what does the Finance Committee have to do with guns? - nothing).

F YOU LIVE IN WA STATE, please TAKE 2 MINUTES and go to the link and fill out the official wa.gov page on this proposed bill and OPPOSE IT!

https://tinyurl.com/rmt9mo9

Click "comment on this bill"

then click "verify district", and enter your address. Your Senator and Reps will appear, check the box, then look down and check "oppose", and then there is a section for comments.

click to Response requested, "YES".

this link DIRECTLY CONNECTS you to the wa.gov page to OPPOSE this new sneaky action.

cut and paste these comments, at the bottom of the form:

- This is a clear abuse of the Washington state legislative system and deadlines. This is immensely clearly not a financial related bill.

- This bill does not have the support to pass the senate anyway with 5 senators (VDW, Hobbs, Takko, Mullet, Randall) already vowing to vote NO on a mag ban. If nothing else this is an immense waste of the legislature's time and resources in a short session.

- This bill will put EVERY small precious metals and coin shop in the state of Washington out of business as part of the crusade against lawful gun owners.

- The bill still states that owners have to PROVE that they owned the magazines before the ban, which is impossible and essentially criminalizes 10s of thousands of WA gun owners for no reason whatsoever.

- Washington state law enforcement mass shootings work group explicitly DID NOT recommend a mag ban or AWB due to their total inefficacy.

The other attack is SB6288, which creates a NEW STATE AGENCY, Creating the "Washington office of firearm violence prevention".

https://app.leg.wa.gov/pbc/bill/6288

It will work with Bloomberg types to generate data to attack gun owners in the future.

There is NO reason for this, other than to attack gun rights.

This effort is 100% citizen run and managed, we get zero help from the NRA, and we have done a great job so far!

With Democrat majorities in Guvnor, Senate, and House, unrelenting pressure and a steady response of emails has turned enough of them to kill all but the above bills.

There have been many reports from Democrat staffers that this effort has clogged their email and phones, and wasted a lot of their time. Some were bitching about it publicly.

NOW IS THE TIME, WASH STATE CITIZENS.

HELP!

292 283, The .45/70 Government replaced an older .50/70 Government with the 1873 Trapdoor rifle. There was a slightly less potent round for Trapdoor carbines with a bit less powder. The round was the issued round of the U.S. military from 1873 until replaced by the Krag. It was even used in the Spanish American War as Krags built were not sufficient for the demand of rifles needed.

It lasted through the trapdoor era and was quite good at putting a lot of stuff in the West down and was chambered in period lever actions.

Became semi obsolete but came back recently with a roar along with the Cowboy Shooting folks--loaded in modern guns with modern steel, the .45/70 can take down most anything with aplomb with a substantial kick.

You will find lever actions, single shots, and a few replica rifles of those older Springfields with modern steel. However, the design of the Springfield is not conducive to high pressures that the modern lever actions or falling block actions can take.

Single shot bolt action Colt Colteer 1-22. They made about 25,000 of them in the late 50s. I think the FTF problem was mostly due to the gunk, but had a spare pin so I replaced it. I didn't know it was bent until I compared it to the new old stock pin, but figured it wasn't helping matters. I noticed the problem more with Federal bulk .22LR, so it could also be a combination of goofy rim fire ammo, too.

Next: ..Now a question for the Horde's collective knowledge:
My oldest pistol is a steel-framed Colt Commander in matte nickel that I bought when I turned 21.
For years the nickel has been getting grubbier and grubbier looking, until today, when it is getting fairly deplorable looking.

How to clean it up ?

Standard solvents and toothbrush have failed.

Posted by: sock_rat_eez, we are being gaslighted 24/365 at February 23, 2020 07:29 PM (zlgJP)

Sadly, it won't clean up. What I would do, is contact Colt and get 'em their Custom Shop to send you a "call-tag" so you can ship it directly to them.

Colt can do a factory re-finish, and return it to you *with* an Official Colt's Letter, detailing the weapon's known history as to when it was made, what configuration and finish it wore when it left the factory, which wholesaler got it, and often, even which retailer effected it's first sale.

You'll end up with a gun likely worth twice what it is now.

Oh, and you can ask 'em to "tune" the gun to whatever standard you're willing to pay for.

Same for engraving. If you're ever going to do a "factory-bespoke" gun, this is your chance.

Weasel? Don't know how you're going to top this week's Gun Thread. This one is dazzling.

317 280 RI Red, go ahead and quote me but the bar examiners are unlikely to agree.

For professional reasons, I have a different approach to law than practicing attorneys and because I am a student of legal history and its development, I have a much less vested interest in supporting our current legal regime which is comparable to legal anarchy and the cloying tendency of the courts to buttress the power of the national state.

What the courts do not realize and only a few attorneys are getting a glimpse of, is that the courts have become instruments of injustice just as the French courts did before the French Revolution.

After the Revolution, the French courts were basically neutered from a political role--a Council of State which resembles a Council of Revision keeps the Court of Cassation (their version of a supreme court) from anything smacking of judicial review. Only the Council of State can review legislation and they are not by and large judges. Once the law goes into effect, then it is not reviewable by the courts.

The EU alters this somewhat with their EU Court of Human Rights of course.

338 Zod. A little more googling says M11 is a 228 and M11A1 is a 229.

They are both sometimes called a compact 226 but unlike others that might have different versions of the same model number (like Sig 320) the 226 is always a full size. The 228 and 229 are smaller than 226 but compact is really a stretch as it's only half an inch shorter.

340 Thanks again Weasel!

You might enjoy my new book because it's got quite a bit of gun play going on. Multi-vehicle ambush on I-75 and what is essentially a platoon-level assault in the rocky hillsides around Marquette.

(That's in northern Michigan.)

A particular comic highlight are the buffoons blasting every shrub in sight with their tricked-out tactical shotguns. "There's another one!" *Blam!*

"What are you shooting at??!"

It was fun to write, hopefully fun to read as well.

341 the 45/70 is a great round that can go from powder puff levels to fire breathing. My repros, both modern, can handle regular modern ammo. But I prefer to load black powder rounds. I love the look and aroma of the smoke. Also, the recoil is different. It's more of a push than a punch on the shoulder. The black powder loads can still take any game.

However, I haven't tried BP ammo in a repeater, only my single shots. Might make clean up of the rifle more difficult. And of course you have to clean the brass.

the only Steyr we have is an HS in 460... stablemate to HRH's Barrett 99 in 416, and both were previously owned by the same person.

neither one had a scope, but the HS came with ammo, dies and fixins, as well as a press to make MOAR ammo with.
the Barrett was stripped of all accessories, and had no ammo.

and yes, the LAPD did the seizure.

all the handguns were missing their magazines, even the oddball ones that wouldn't have been "large capacity"...

i leave it as an exercise to the reader where all these things might have disappeared to.

One of the more robust tripods ever made, topped with a silky-smooth elevation and azimuth scope holder, with a Quick Detach mounting plate system.

Now, I'm just shopping for the right *screaming bargain* for the glass itself. Ideally, I'll find a deal on a Vortex Razor with the 85mm Objective lens and Angled Eyepiece.

353 And if I shot his Marlin I'd probably be back to see the shoulder surgeon.

The kick wasn't much. Of course, it did make the .22 afterwards (Savage 1914) seem kind of silly, but it's more the fireball and the concussion that gets your attention. I noticed while my nephew was firing that I couldn't keep my eyes open during the shot.

"Pricey" isn't my point of fear for this purchase, quite so much as "Buying Stupidly" would be.

So, thanks for the Kowa Kudos, and I *will* be checking them out!

As to really pricey though, you'll notice I'm not shopping in the Leitz-Wetzlar catalog.

382 Ah, late to the thread. Sundays are tough sometimes.

Did get to the range yesterday. Mostly focused on left hand drills. I got better by the end of the session but I need more practice.

Next week, going to mix .22 and 9mm. Maybe start the session with a few mags of 9mm, then switch to .22, then close out with full power rounds again. See if my groups are improved.

Most shooting done with the CZ P-07 with and without the Kadet adapter. If you need a pistol, I highly endorse it.

Did get some more mags through the G44 but by the end of the session it was stovepipeing again. I suspect it was getting gunked up. Disappointing but at least it's not constantly jamming with full magazines.

383 Straggling in...
Spent Saturday at the range, taking a class on teaching muzzle-loading to 4H kids. I'd done a limited amount of shooting of such, mostly a Brown Bess replica owned by a friend who is a Revolutionary re-enactor. After a morning of instruction and swapping a few lies, we adjourned for live fire. Everyone got chances to play instructor and student, and then we shot our way through the various arms provided by a generous instructor: a modern in line, a couple modern plastic stocked cap locks, and then into the fun stuff - a replica flinter, two wood stocked replica cap locks with peep sights and set triggers, and an under lock replica, which I'd never seen before. Did my best work with the latter - the open sights just happened to be correct for lefty shooter moi, which is seldom the case with apertures sighted for a righty. One instructor candidate's 12 year old son came along for the ride, was admitted to the firing line and had a blast. Came home with a bit of a powder burn on one finger, but was having so much fun I didn't notice when it happened.

On the ammo front, took delivery of 1000 Dogtown 55 gr hollow points for reloading. My AR likes these just as well as VMax's out to 300 or so, and not only are they cheaper but it means my target ammo can double for varmint elimination, of four or two legged variety as needed.
