Bernie is a con-man looking for another pay-off like last time. When it comes time to chose a candy date at the Dem convention he'll 'reluctantly' drop out because of heart trouble and endorse whomever pays him. It wouldn't surprise me if his heart trouble is a ruse concocted for this. Posted by: davidt at February 21, 2020 10:09 PM (l3+k2) 36
That snippet about the Orioles having braille on their uniforms reminded me of something I saw in the airport in Grand Forks, ND. The slot at the car-rental desk for dropping off the key for your rental car was labelled in the usual way - and also in braille. Think about that: a braille label on the slot where you drop off a car key. Either North Dakota is extremely lax about handing out driver's licenses, or someone got carried away on the inclusiveness thing. Or, most likely, some bureaucrat mandated that *everything* be labeled in braille, regardless of whether it makes sense.
As for blind people: Thank you, Baltimore Orioles, but I'm aware that there are blind people in the world. Now what do you want me to do? Posted by: Brown Line at February 21, 2020 10:09 PM (S6ArX) 37

https://tinyurl.com/uzc3a9s And from what I hear, even more counties than those are working to form militias independent of the state government. There's also talk of members compensating the sheriffs for the lack of a pay raise (probably as retaliation for so many of them backing the sanctuary movement), which is a good first step towards creating a shadow government. An election campaign with a massive pandemic hitting the United States, with thousands dead, millions sick, large gatherings prohibited, and the economy tanking, would not be good for the incumbent. So, it is reasonable to assume that the Deep State will do everything possible to bring coronavirus here, because OrangeManBad. Long time ago, I was one of those designated ConElRad officials, on the planning committee for the end of the world. The military took it in stride; the Military Governor for our State was a career Warrant Officer in the USAR who'd had the assignment devolved onto him. Laziest Hitler ever. Post Office was all like, whatever, we've been around and seen it before. Various other organizations ranged from deer-in-headlights "I'll just sit on the porch and watch the cloud go up" to a sort of Barney Fife bug-eye routine.
My takeaway was that, for all of the departments and tinhorn petty tyrants with wet dreams of busting your door down in the middle of the night, when it actually came to something icky like a Pelvic Inflammatory Disease outbreak, nobody in those naval-titled uniformed services had the nads to wave a car down and ask for ID. The Nazis were Nationalists.
I see what you're getting at, and I'm not calling you full of anything. In essence you're perfectly right, but there was one other thing going on. Just as Napoleon was nationalist-French but also had the "continental system," during the brief happy time when Germany first seized most of the known world, they got busy selling a notion of how everybody was going to get along in this new Reich. France and Belgium, for instance, were not going to be just rolled under to become provinces. There really was going to be a New Order, and plenty of French were glad to see it because it wasn't dominated by their old friends the Russians and the lame-ass world commune. But there defintely was an internationalist tinge to the Reich. A friend who runs a WWII museum in Belgium told me the German soldiers didn't become movie-grade monsters until after D-Day. They used to share their chocolate with the kids, just like GI's did. OK, not the SS. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at February 21, 2020 11:32 PM (8IOEj) 288

One of the ironies of The Miracle On Ice hockey team is the team's captain, Mike Eruzione, never played in the NHL. Six of the Soviets in that game did eventually play in the NHL with one, Viacheslav Fetisov, getting his name engraved on the Stanley Cup (twice playing for Detroit).

One of the ironies of The Miracle On Ice hockey team
is the team's captain, Mike Eruzione, never played in the NHL. Six of the Soviets in that game did eventually play in the NHL with one, Viacheslav Fetisov, getting his name engraved on the Stanley Cup (twice playing for Detroit). @296 - let me tell you the story of Tiny Hobo.
I was living elsewhere, and when I went to check the back yard, there was a brief glimpse of a CREATURE fleeing into the night. I put out some cat snax. And she ate them. That was my mistake. Because when I went out the next night, to check on things, she was there...loudly demanding snax. And I gave her some. I started to give her regular cat food, and she thought, yeah, this is regular, I want more. So, she started showing up in the day time, demanding snax, and she let me pick her up and pet her (while demanding snax) and purred. At the time, Leela (my cat, Very First Pet Thread Pic) was aging, so I didn't want a competitor to her (though I brought Tiny Hobo inside once, and Leela didn't seem to care). A couple of days later, Tiny Hobo didn't appear. I thought, great, someone adopted her. A couple of days after that, she re-appeared. I fed her, hugged her, and petted her. She did not appear after that. I still think someone adopted her. She was very affectionate and personable, aside from Talking ALL the Time. Anyway, that's the story of Tiny Hobo. If you think you've heard the last of her, well, I may just post this on the pet thread. Good vibes to all. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at February 21, 2020 11:51 PM (l9m7l) 314

Posted by: Vendette at February 21, 2020 11:40 PM (nRNOc) I'll answer myself to avenge RickZ's honor. 1980's USSR team, which some say is the best international team ever put on the ice, had 5 players from my count who made to to the NHL, so it's very possible I can't count properly and it was 6. The 1984 Olympic team definitely had that many, most of whom had played in 1980. The 1987 Canada Cup team I mentioned was loaded with players who made it to the NHL. Posted by: NZFrank with a M2 at February 22, 2020 12:04 AM (tAuzy) I cheated and search engined the phrase, never having heard it before. It was used in one Dickens novel (which I did not read). So I know what they are, but I still don't know why they're happy. My best guess is the sand was used for flooring in pubs to absorb spitting and the 'sand boys' (men) selling that sand were often paid for their sand in spirits, making them happy. Is that right? Nothing millennial about this. Back in the Phil Ochs days, early 60's, while the "New Left" was being formulated, they started calling it "Economic Democracy." May have to drill a relief hole, but will try to avoid that if possible. I think this is worse than my last nail incident, where my thumb got stuck between a 6" cast iron drain pipe and the blade holder on a sawzall running at full speed. I think it got smashed at least two times before I pulled it away. At least it didn't get the blade. Got a new thumbnail from that incident. Tretiak was old for an athlete in 1989, also being born in 1952.
While Ken Dryden is arguably the best NHL goalie history-wise, a case can be made for Patrick Roy, too. Not many goalies win Stanley Cups on two different teams (2 with Montreal and 2 with the Colorado Avalanche). Posted by: RickZ at February 22, 2020 12:27 AM (Y8PSl) I know he was too old for it when the time came; I've wondered if he would have if he had been given the chance even around 1984 or 85. I think part of the problem with naming a "best goalie ever" in the NHL is that the NHL has changed so much over the years in the equipment department (not to mention the size of the players themselves). There were plenty of good ones like Hall, Plante, and Vezina, for example. Going to be flippant here, but transport Patrick Roy back to the days of a facemask at best and before banana blades were banned and he'd probably be soiling his pants. (Hopefully I'm not annoying the daylights out of you.) Posted by: Vendette at February 22, 2020 12:45 AM (nRNOc) 388

Posted by: Average Guy at February 22, 2020 12:36 AM (BaHwF) If you get a blister under the nail, and it becomes very swollen and painful, there is one thing you can do to obtain instant relief. Obtain a sewing needle, or even a thin nail, and heat it red hot in the flame of a torch, and use the red hot needle to burn a hole in the nail. There are no nerve endings in the nail, or the bubble of blood under it, so you will not cause any pain. Once the needle hits the blood, it is quenched cold, so even if you push far enough to touch the nail bed, the needle won't burn sensitive tissue. Had this done to me by a doctor after I dropped a transmission on my big toe. Instant relief from the pressure of the blister. Also a small fountain of blood, but that blood was already "out of circulation". Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 22, 2020 12:45 AM (LxWV7) 389

Which reminds me of a guy in college. I studied printing (graphic communications) at Cal Poly. We had all sorts of working printing presses, large and small, as well as industrial paper cutters, binding machines, etc. All of this equipment was used by students in the lab classes.
It was also used by the student-run printing company, of which I was the pre-press manager. Our crew would print the daily newspaper, class schedules, commencement programs, and all sorts of stuff for the school. We worked after class hours, usually into the night. One of the guys was using the huge (36", IIRC) guillotine paper cutter to cut down big stacks of paper. The dimensions were getting a bit small, and positioning them was getting tricky, so he went behind the cutter to hold the stack of paper in place while he had another guy press the two buttons on the front of the cutter to initiate the cut (there are two buttons for a reason)... Now, you're probably thinking he's gonna get something chopped off, but noooooo... he got his middle and ring finger stuck under the 5,000+ psi clamp that comes down before the blade. Smashed his finger tips like ripe cherry tomatoes. Brutal. Doctors were able to save his fingers, which is fortunate because it wouldn't have been as fun ridiculing him for the next couple of months if he had lost them. By the time the game ended, there were about 7 skaters from each team left on the bench. Something like 505 minutes of penalties, including multiple game misconducts. Office I worked in eons ago got all the int'l newspapers and mags. Had a bulletin board where some of the funniest stuff would be clipped and posted. One time there was a cricket match short summary from The Times. Only about two paragraphs. All in English. Utterly incomprehensible, apart from who won. Was hilarious. But that reminds me of his more idiosyncratic paisan, Al Iafrate. Lanky, huge, volatile, perhaps not all there. Explosive skater, and I think he won a slapshot skills competition once too. But he's seared, seared into my memory and hockey idiom for his signature move - skating the puck out through the slot - even the crease - when he deemed it necessary. Goalies, of course, practically fainted when he did it - very risky move, against all the norms and standards for a defenseman. "Iafrate through the crease". One time my team had done the deal where we bought 100 tickets to a Caps game, and so were able to play a scrimmage against one our house league opponents at the Cap Center just before a Caps game. As we came off the ice, going to our locker room (NOT as nice as the pro locker rooms, of course), there was Iafrate. Sitting on a folding chair, right up against the glass. --------------------------------------Belmonte added that most losers of close presidential elections have conceded defeat and called for the nation to unify, which has helped to maintain public faith in the system. In 1877, Democrat Samuel Tilden gave a speech in which he continued to claim that he was the rightful winner of the previous year's election, but he nonetheless called on his supporters to "be of good cheer," adding: "The Republic will survive." [Some Trump Supporters Demanding 'Revolution' If He Doesn't Win] Still, Belmonte said, some of them went on to refer to Tilden's opponent, President Rutherford B. Hayes," as "Rutherford B. Fraud." More recent losers of disputed elections have been even clearer. Richard Nixon pledged his "wholehearted support" for John F. Kennedy in 1960, even as some Nixon supporters alleged fraud by Democrats in crucial Illinois. In 2000, Vice President Al Gore - who had won the popular vote and might have won a majority of electoral votes were it not for a purge of Florida's voter rolls while opponent's brother was governor - promised to "bring Americans together" after the Supreme Court decided the election for George W. Bush. Whether Trump would respond to defeat in the same way is very much an open question. He pledged at the first presidential debate that he'd "absolutely" support Clinton if she won. But he has since hedged, telling The New York Times later that week: "We're going to have to see. We're going to see what happens." That has some election experts worrying that America's long tradition of peacefully transferring power could be at risk. "One of the things we take for granted is that, even in tumultuous times when elections are hard fought, the losers concede the election and embrace the process, even if things did not go well," the election law scholar Rick Hasen, a professor of law and political science at the University of California-Irvine, wrote after Trump's "we're going to have to see" comments. "Donald Trump threatens this peace," Hasen wrote. ---------------------------------------- Posted by: ... at February 22, 2020 02:35 AM (Wge+f) 501

The defenseman with the most goals last year, at 20, is 6'1". Even the average height of goalies has gotten taller. John Vanbiesbrouck, playing not all that long ago and at 5'8", is a shrimp compared to goalies today. The top 5 goalies last year are 6'2", 6'2", 6'3", 6'4" and 6'1", respectively. In fact, none of the top 10 goalies last year is under 6'.

Weirddave and 'Sock Monkey...in my happy place',
like I said, smaller forwards with talent might make it. Smaller defensemen, not so much. The top scoring defenseman last year is 6'5". Posted by: RickZ at February 22, 2020 03:26 AM (Y8PSl) Heck, Grant Fuhr is listed at 5'10" and if you watch him during his playing days, especially with the Oilers, he looks puny (the equipment sizing thing plays an issue). We just had a huge scandal exposed here in MA, which was covered up and whitewashed because of corruption, over the Registry allowing people to drive who shouldn't be driving. A piece of scum from Russia killed 7 people, last Summer, despite the Registry being told not to give him a license. It made national fake news. Posted by: Sock Monkey...in my happy place at February 22, 2020 03:32 AM (p4Iex) I only watch some of the playoffs because my friend runs a hockey playoff pool; he's done that for over 30 years. I've won the thing twice ($1,600 and $850; prize pool depends on the number of entries), so I keep playing. I've made more off that hockey pool, including losses, than I've ever made at a casino or in a lottery. So if I'm still in the running in the semis or finals I'll watch. What happened to the gardening thread? This is some kind of Frankenstein thread.
Anyway, one of the guys who carried that vet (the bearded one, Jason) was on the RedPill78 webcast last night. He had changed his shirt to a Q shirt (which he'd smuggled in) after carrying that vet. When he was invited to sit behind Trump, a sad lady told him he wouldn't be able to wear the Q shirt so prominently. He said no problem, as he still had his Q tattoo, which would be visible on his right arm every time he cheered. Fox and Friends had approached him to appear on the show, but he wasn't interested.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.
