23 Nice little hind paws on the lady standing. I love a bracelet around a slim ankle.

I'd guess this is supposed to be Greece/the Aegean. True, the ladies are dressed in 1900s fashions (I guess?), but it was fashionable once upon a time in art to dress the past in the clothing and details of the present.

24 Alma-Tadema is an Arabic name. So this was painted by Sir Lawrnce of Arabia.

It depicts late Victorian hotties lounging about by the seaside, feeding the Queens koi, and preparing for something lascivious.

I endorse this.

Pre-Renaissance art had a bad habit of sketching out Biblical scenes with everyone dressed up in thirteenth-century Italian fashions.

It was also a way of making the scene and lesson more relatable to the viewer, similar to how directors update Shakespeare. Jesus will never be depicted in contemporary clothing, however. He is timeless and immortal, therefore He must be depicted classically.

It's possible that ankle bracelets were seen as exotic, and whores wanted to try and take advantage of that to entice customers. Or the bracelets were cheap and thus affordable to a whore. Or it was something that could easily be hidden under your skirts when walking around.

There was a Nazi prison camp movie from the 80s(?) that had a scene where one of the Nazis looked specifically for tattoos to harvest after the person was liquidated. He made lamp shades from them. I don't remember the movie, it wasn't "Escape from Sobibor" tho. Later, I read that there was no evidence the Nazis actually did that and that that scene was made up. The Nazis attracted all the psychos so the idea is incredibly plausible. I have no problem believing a book like that exists.

We used to leave Sailors behind in the Philippines because hookers claimed they told them they would marry them.

In Philippine law a verbal contract is as good as a written one and we had to leave the guys behind to let it play out in the courts. Some of them wound up getting married and some just payed out hush money to make it go away.

But after a few guys did that so they wouldn't have to go on cruise, everyone we left behind after that was restricted to the Base with no liberty. Still had a few we left behind nearly every time we hit Subic Bay because they got drunk and told a hooker they wanted to get married.

270 The "urban legend" on Tang was that the astronauts were going to be drinking recycled purified urine, and a specific taste profile was needed to mask it.

NASA is recruiting astronauts right now. Certainly someone might reflect on what kind of balls it takes to ride, then inhabit, the product of today's space engineering. Except Muskies. The Musk can do no wrong.

But that would be to ignore the Mercury program boosters, which all blew up in testing, until one of the original seven visited the plant (pretty sure it was Atlas assembly plant in the Saint Louis area), took a tour, and when asked to say a few words, nervously mumbled, "Well, do good work!" and they stopped blowing up right then and there.

It was a suicide mission. Our rockets always blew up.

I have to disagree with you on this one. This is what happens when academic feminists rule the world. To the academic feminist, the woman is always right.

Had he pursued her and she didn't like, they'd have kicked him out for harassment. She did like it, though, (I am guessing he has teh hawt), and wanted him. So now it's time for heart balm.

What's even better is that this same girl could get the suitor she *didn't* like kicked out, too, on the other side of the double standard.

If this is as it is described, this is far more indicative of the absence of anything even approaching objectivity due to murky political agenda.

It's possible that after we have burned down the universities and salted the earth where they stood, no stone left on stone, a select few may still be allowed to study classical languages, for the gradual improvement of scriptural text. Or not. I know a lot of finger-wagglers who can't read King James English.

Plato was not a "philosopher' per se, but a sort of drawing-room comedy writer similar to George "Bernard-Shaw." His dialogue characters have sophisticated quip-fests with all sorts of current cultural side comments, and some out-and-out howlers. But because Francis Cornford was drier than a popcorn fart, the clever lines have been plastered over like popes putting fig leaves on the statues.

Maybe so. Lawyers were definitely involved. And what's one man's future and sunk costs as arrayed against a controversy?

The law is rapidly becoming a farcical cover to punish people who might stir up controversy - and everything normal is controversial.

Yesterday was the anniversary of Churchill's Iron Curtain speech:

From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and, in many cases, increasing measure of control from Moscow.

Three hundred miles? Pffft. In modern cars on modern Interstates that's a 4-hour jaunt. Spend the night in a hotel and drive back the next day.

It's not like 1970 when you had to fly to NY to do that (and plane tickets were relatively expensive then, and not many people had credit cards).

Respectfully, I think this is the wrong approach. Put yourself in their shoes and imagine what would happen if Rand Paul or Lindsey Graham said the exact same thing and in the same circumstances. There would be full-page headlines and constant calls for their destruction for their violent threats against Sotomayor and Kagan and their attempt to disrupt the activities of a co-equal branch of the government. They would be beaten down until marginalized or until they quit. People would be vandalizing their houses. Mobs of lunatics would be running them out of restaurants. The Senate would immediately censure them and they'd lose their committee assignments.

These are men without principle, without honesty, without morality. They are a horde of unethical highwaymen out to accumulate power and enslave anyone who disagrees with them. Never defend them for any reason whatsoever.

I think Schumer thought he was copying Trump, but he's too much of a thug to understand why what Trump did was acceptable, and why what Schumer did was not. Trump criticized the *decisions* of the Sotomayer and Kagan, and he asked them to recuse themselves - a completely legal remedy, even if it was just rhetoric.

Schumer attacked Gorsuch and Kavanaugh *Personally* and said "You will pay a price!!" which everyone listening understood as a very ILLEGAL remedy. (to say he contemplated Impeachment is post facto justification, since he never said that) That's where Schumer crossed a line that Trump never got close to.

and that is why you are wrong to equate the two.
