The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Remember all of the pundits and foreign policy experts and military experts who told use that Trump's killing of Suleimani was a terrible thing and would just further destabilize an already unstable situation?

In other words: ORANGEMAN BAD!

Shockingly, they seem to have been mostly full of shit. And this article is from The Guardian, which is by no means a supporter of anything approaching a robust defense or for that matter, Western culture. So my guess is that the current situation is even better than they suggest.

After Suleimani: Iran's scramble to recover from general's death

From the bunkers of south Beirut to the battlefields of northern Syria and the combustible streets of Iraq, the loss of Suleimani and his entourage has derailed much of Iran’s momentum in the region and exposed to rare vulnerability the opaque Quds Force it has used to project its influence over two decades.

The assassination has also shone a light on the complicated relationship between the Iranian leadership and the Iraqi government, senior members of which have scrambled ever since to resurrect Suleimani’s core regional projects located as far away as the Lebanese capital and Damascus. The reckoning started as soon as the dead were buried.

The irrational hatred of all things Trump has further addled the brains of these people. In what universe is the killing of the top levels of any organization a bad thing in terms of its function? Sure, it is fodder for spy novels and thrillers...the head of X is killed, and his shadowy second-in-command is a brilliant strategist who succeeds where nobody has before.

But reality is a bit different, and this is a good example of reality. Disarray in the most significant terrorist organization in the world is a very good thing, and anyone who suggests otherwise is a fool, or worse, someone who secretly (or not so secretly) hopes for American and Western deaths.

I am pleased with this operation. It signals that there is a change in our tolerance for terrorism, and clearly shows that it is no longer seen as a law enforcement issue.

Will Suleimani's killing reverse Iraq's slide into vassal status to Iran? Probably not. But coupled with vigorous and aggressive sanctions, perhaps Iran will in the medium term be unable to project its force as well as it once did, and that is also a good thing. Maybe Iraq can shrug off Iran and become an independent country. Or at least a slightly less obedient colony...

This is impossible. I have been assured by our betters in Government and our betters in Media that Iran is a self-contained country that while not exactly peaceful is not a foreign adventurer and that our differences of opinion are not cause for alarm. It is not sensible to believe that offing their general could have influence outside of Iran.

This is clearly the work of lying, conspiracy-theorist wreckers. My betters told me so.

It isn't exactly the same because they don't have our armed capability raining down targeted fire from above, but I imagine it is a shot in the arm for people who want Iran out of their affairs and are willing to capitalize on chaos.

42 Our chattering class has forgotten the great weakness of terrorist and other similar secret organizations - they depend on very tight lines of control, and a centralized leadership. (Otherwise they go off in a hundred different directions with no coordination) But, this centralized control in secret necessarily becomes very personalized on one charismatic figure (Bin Laden, or Al Baghdadi, or Suleimani) and thus the organization becomes very vulnerable to a decapitation strike. And men like that *never* leave competent successors behind; such a successor would have been too great a risk in a murderous organization.

Like cults of personality. It is often posited, for example, that the Third Reich, even if they were still ascendant, would not have meaningfully outlived Hitler. There may be something to that.

For a counterpoint, there is always the USSR - which survived Stalin through aggressive and violent destalinization.

There are always key men, but when the entire organization is entirely dependent on the key man, the loss of the key man is a death sentence. If the organization is robust, the loss of the key man is merely extremely painful and a big setback.

I guess we'll find out which kind of organization Quds is.

Odds are that it survives. It's matrixed socioeconomically, with tentacles throughout the Middle East (and, by extension, elsewhere). Members don't just join up to push Israel into the sea; they join for the connections, the financial sinecures, wasta (or whatever the Persian term for that is), etc.

For example, there's more than a bit of truth to the theory that the Lebanese diaspora has put entrepreneurial Hizballah supporters in the four corners of the globe. Qods knows about these folks and how much they tithe, and how life after retirement can be smoove outside the ME; it's part of a global IRGC infrastructure.
Killing Soleimani was great, but it's probably not likely to crater a tight organization with financial incentive to sustain itself.

97 The judge knows that all eyes are on this farce. If she's doing this, she is doing it so as to be sure that there is an immediate appeal and someone else has to deal with the dirty diaper while she exits stage left.

She's a Clinton appointee and this is probably at or near retirement age anyway. This may well be self-preservation - end this stage and be as ugly and biased as possible about it, set it up to be a slam-dunk appellate action (that it will happen and be accepted, not necessarily the outcome), kick it upstairs, and mark time until retirement.

I would say that it shows that it is not exclusively a law enforcement issue any longer.

One of the actions taken by Sessions that has largely flown under the radar was his restarting of Project Casandra in 2018. That was the joint DOJ/DEA task force targeting Hezbollah drug running and money laundering throughout the world that had been a huge financing operation for Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies that Obama shutdown to protect his precious Iran deal.

There have been some notable successes including Kassim Tajideen who was convicted of running a multi-billion dollar money laundering ring based out of Lebanon.

It also doesn't hurt that shutting down the southern border is cutting down on the drug flow from South America which Hezbollah is a big part of.

Iran and her proxies are being starved by with public sanctions on their oil and by shutting down their illicit money making operations.

Short-term, that may well be true. Iran is a cornered animal and Trump closed their operating space rather a lot, while cranking up sanctions and poking them in the eye.

Obama failed to maintain deterrence in *any* way and actively pursued its opposite with many of his actions. Regaining deterrence is expensive and dangerous. Containing the "Death to America" crowd - especially when their ambitions are at *least* regional - and crippling them is a good thing, but the critics are correct that it's dangerous. They're totally incorrect that it is reckless or stupid.

Look at the big picture, and for the last 3,000 years the history of the Middle East is that it is peaceful as long as it is all controlled by one large and powerful Empire, which can employ force to keep a lid on all of the nutso inhabitants. Then when that Empire falls, as all Empires do eventually, there is chaos and mayhem for a century or two before some other empire consolidates control again.

The last period of long term peace was the roughly 400 years leading up to 1917 - and then the Allies blew up the Ottoman Empire and took pieces for themselves, but that was very unstable (especially after WW2) and then oil made the region fabulously wealthy while the Jewish Nation was resurrected, and we've been stuck playing out those scenarios for all of our lives. Stability is probably still a couple of generations away, and who knows what form it will take.

From the few bits I've seen, Suleimani's #2 has spent his time deep inside a fortified compound in Tehran, sending out memo's.

The obvious problem - all the catspaws that Iran was using such as Hezbollah and the militias were all glad to take Iran's money, but without someone to show up and ride herd on them, and scare them into showing results, most of it would end up going to hookers and blow. Yep, even in the Arab world. Suleimani was the Big Swinging Dick that everyone in the region was terrified of. His replacement is a terrified little pencil pusher, but he knows all the right people.

I was shocked yesterday when Judge Nap said that Jackson has a duty to delay sentencing , call in the jury foreman and question her on why she didn't tell the court about her bias and the fact that she is a lawyer. He said she also, in his opinion, violated Stone's 1st amendment rights when she ordered him to not talk to the press after he was found guilty. Nap said he has never heard of a judge ordering a defendant at the end of a trial to not speak to the press.

He believes this is going to go down in flames in appellate courts.

Look at the draft dodgers. Pardoned en masse, and not even individually named.

There may be a couple things that are politically embarrassing there, but there's nothing criminal. Why do we know that? Because they haven't been "secret", they've just been restricted to appropriate personnel, and they have been gone through with a fine tooth comb several times by the IRS and the New York State Tax authority. If there was anything criminal there, it would have come out long ago.

I guess I could see the IRS swampin' it up and releasing Trump's records. I mean, it wouldn't show any wrongdoing (if it could they would have done so already), and it would likely paint a fairly rosy picture when considered objectively and on merit. And it would also ruin the reputation of an agency that is already hated by most people.

But, just because it's stupid, is no guarantee these goons won't go for it - anything to help, right?
