114 This is an interesting combination of rich dark tones offset by 'sparks' of white and brightness. Perhaps early morning light slanting in through a window stressing the white articles. The darker areas aren't black but more like deep rich walnut tones also reflected in the model's skin.

I don't find the scene especially moving but the techniques and artistic decisions that went into it are more intriguing. I might not put it on the wall but would use it as a teaching tool if I were teaching an art class.

I don't know if having an African (I presume) as the figure is supposed to have meaning.

Luke 24:

13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

The figure in the background with the halo is Jesus. Although identified as a disciple in the Bible story, Velazquez does not seem to believe the other man is one of The Eleven. If he did, the man should also have a halo. Also, notice the cross through Jesus's halo. That is a symbol associated ONLY with Jesus.

Seems there is disagreement in the art world.

The poet also uses language to move our attention around the room of the painting while also noting the physical details of the space: before her, tipped toward us, clutched in her hand, upside down / bent over, at rest in the mortar, angled in its posture, beside it, stain on the wall, size of her shadow, shape of a thumb, framed, behind her, leans into, light...on...her face.
The poet uses repetition skillfully to enhance our sense of being in the room, including she is / she's occurring multiple times,
her hand twice, and the lovely rhythmic lull of the mortar / and the pestle at rest in the mortar.
Red is also echoed in the color of blood. White shows up four times; the use of white in the painting is a major aspect of its composition,
of course, but it strikes me that the poet decided to heighten the presence of whiteness in the poem as well, and that the first use of white occurs in this phrase: the white pitcher / clutched in her hand, the black one edged in red

215 Yeah, Emmaus is off I-476 on the way up to Allentown. Nice town.

Seriously, though, the technical ability is quiet but impressive here; everything is dark but the details stand out still. And it's a quirky but interesting choice of subject: not the supper, but the person who prepared the supper, going about her business in the presence of the risen Christ. I like it.

Welcome to Friday Eve, Horde, AKA Thursday. Hang on, we're almost there.

V. 18 says one of the 2 men that Jesus met was named Cleopas; the other was an unnamed friend and disciple. There are many references in the Gospels which indicate that while the 12 ( and minus Judas, the 11) were the core of Jesus' Disciples, he probably traveled around Judea with an entourage of at least 50 or 60 people who would have called themselves "disciples", and who probably came and went as they were able. Cleopas and his unnamed friend would have been of this group.

Posted by: Tom Servo at February 20, 2020 10:11 AM (Kpl3J)

At one time Jesus sends out 72 disciples to preach to the surrounding region. It's possible these two were one of these. Does the RC Church consider the Two at Emmaus saints? If so, when were they declared such? Before or after this era?

On the other hand, another way to look at this is that during the Baroque, there was a desire for a more naturalistic depiction of important figures. Saints and holy figures, for the most part, do not get halos because they wouldn't have them in real life. (See the Caravaggios already linked, for example.) Velasquez, being Spanish, may give Jesus one because Jesus, but not to the others because its Baroque.

Anyway, it's interesting.

So putting on the usual 5 point shift for likely voters, make that at least 54% in favor, 43% disapprove.

347 RE the Stone trial: Assuming the strategy for first contact is death by a thousand cuts, and the likelihood that its a slam dunk the conviction would be overturned on appeal, wouldn't it be reasonable to expect the Judge to declare a mistrial and force Stone to start over again?

That would be consistent with the strategy they're using against Flynn. It would also explain PDTS' remarks yesterday that those guys are going through a process. I think PDTS is setting up the DoJ for a major ass whippin. That might explain Barr's sensitivity to the tweet storm as well.

I score it differently, I would rather go up against a worse candidate than hope the radicals sit it out.

I don't think they really will sit it out, most liberals like the idea of being ruled by an iron fist anyway and will fall in line. I also think Trump to them is "literally Hitler" and they will find a reason to spend 5 minutes on their mail in ballot.

I just know that had the nom been stolen from Trump in 2016 and say Ted Cruz was the nominee, I probably would have still voted for him against Hillary.

asparagus came up yesterday evening, most notably the smell. Asparagus concentrates Sulphur and turns it into a compound named Mercaptan, which also is present in rotten eggs. Mercaptan passes through the body without being broken down, hence the infamous smell.

Sanders' campaign surrogates are anti-Semetic Islamists.

He'll campaign in places like Wisconsin unlike Hillary, but he'll be dragging these people around with him everywhere, and he'll get pushed off the stages by little girls who want his microphone.

Trump will look presidential in comparison on the debate stage.

The mask of capitalism friendliness will be ripped off of the Democratic Party for all to see.

The Republican Party will be able to easy, very very easily, pain every single Democrat in the country as a tool for a socialist reconstruction of America based on Sanders' long, long history of saying nice things about communist hellholes.

A Sanders candidacy, even without massive uproar within the Democratic Party, would be a disaster for the Left. Oh, and there will be some level of split. I imagine it will form as the rich technocratic version of the Coffee Party, but that will take more votes from Democrats than Republicans.

And the 2.5% of the electorate that went from one of the two major parties to the Libertarian Party in 2016 will mostly come back to the Republican Party.

2020 was an uphill climb for Democrats from the beginning. Sanders as the nominee puts them in a killbox with no exit.

It's gruesomely fascinating to watch a slow motion train wreck play out, one where everyone knows the terrible outcome, and yet all the players go through with their parts, right up until the bitter end.

From what I recall, Manafort and Stone's judge made gag orders a 'thing' in those trials. 473 I love the idea of the servant girl listening to the conversation in the other room. She's almost frozen in her task, hanging on every word that is being discussed.

"Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"

That would make her -- an unintended (or was she?) servant girl -- one of the first to hear the full meaning of Jesus' resurrection. And isn't that just typical? Not a king. Not a high priest. But a servant. Lovely.

475 This is one of my favorite paintings, ever. It hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago, and I've had the pleasure of seeing it many times over the 60 years or so that I've been visiting that museum. The painting is relatively small - maybe about 30" wide and 20" high. What is so striking when you see the painting in person is how Velasquez rendered the many textures of the objects in the picture: the crockery jug and pitcher; the hammered brass bowl; the brass mortar and pestle; the fabric of the dishcloth and the servant's turban; the woven rush basket; the wooden tabletop; the servant's skin and hair: all rendered so accurately that you can almost feel them under your fingertips. Velasquez paints so accurately, so well, with such loving detail, it takes your breath away. And by looking at his rendering, I can see and begin to appreciate the beauty in such everyday objects in my own kitchen.

All the times I've seen this painting, though, I've never heard of the connection to the Supper at Emmaus. As others here have pointed out, that gives another dimension to what would otherwise be an ordinary - if exquisitely rendered - genre scene. When I look at the servant, I don't get the impression that she's hearing anything extraordinary; but maybe that's me.

Anyway, thank you for posting one of my art faves!
