Tonight's ONT Has Everything!

Hello. I'm Jerry Hathaway, with Everything.

Want to know everything? There are the only 2 books you need to read:

HBS.jpg

Problematic

M*A*S*H at 50: the Robert Altman comedy that revels in cruel misogyny

Some pajama-wearing soy boy has a problem with M*A*S*H*. Not the TV show which was drowning in the 1980s version of PC by the time it went off the air, but the movie that spawned it. The idiot doesn't even seem to realize that it was an anti-Vietnam War film wearing Korean War clothing. He even says this:

The sexism is present in the 1968 novel by Richard Hooker that the film is based on, but it’s greatly magnified in the screenplay by Ring Lardner Jr and the extensive improvisation that reportedly occurred on set. The shower scene, the broadcasting of the lovemaking between Houlihan and Burns, and a subplot involving a character who wants to kill himself because he is afraid he is gay; none of them are present in the book.

I've read the book. Hell, I have the book, right here, and that stuff is in there. Idiot.

The Scale Of The North American Slave Trade

Here's a good article that puts it all in proportion: SLAVERY? WE WERE A FOOTNOTE. Get some facts to own some libs when they start spouting off about this “unique” American sin.

Quip Of The Day

And here is, as they say, the rest of the story.

In Case You Missed It

The Trump campaign is trolling Adam Schiff.

How To Lose Your Audience

Nobody read this. A (Former) Night Owl’s Guide to Becoming a Morning Person

Science Takes Balls

Testicles have taste buds that can detect sweet flavours (sic)

It's a British link. There's a chip company in Canada who advertises “We put the U in flavour”. Not a slogan that would fly down here in the colonies. Pro tip: If you're going to search for more on this tasty story, don't accidentally do a GIS with safe search off.

The Full Story

This is a longish article that tracks the whole FBI scandal in some detail.

The FBI Scandal

Why We March

Tomorrow is the annual March-For-Life in Washington DC. I will be attending, along with my 15 year old son who will be going for the first time. I've given him strict instructions on how to act. If some crazy Black Israelite starts screaming racist crap at him, and a creepy Indian starts beating a drum in his face, he is under strict instructions to just smile uneasily. I want some of that sweet, sweet CNN settlement money.

You know who else will be there? President Donald J Trump. Reagan never made it to the march, neither did either of the Bushes, but President “not-a-real-conservative” Trump will be there. This may be the moment when my qualified support for Trump becomes a full-throated roar. There is no greater stain on our national honor than our acceptance of infanticide. For those of y'all who missed it, 3 years ago I wrote a post on this blog explaining why we march:

Why We March

*Mumble mumble* years ago, a young woman found her life shattered. She had fallen for a man who turned out to be a cad.

He left her alone and pregnant, to return to a wife and kids that she had known nothing about. Scared and humiliated, she traveled to Texas.

There she gave birth to a son. The nurse handed her the baby, and then realized that this was an adoption case and took him away.

Sobbing, she thought “He's going to a better life. He's going to people who will love and care for him, as I can't”

And I did.

But she was wrong. She may not have been able to care for me, but I never for a moment believed that she didn't love me.

35 years later we met again, for the first time, and I told her that. And that's why I have 2 moms.

This is what #MarchForLife means to me.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by choices:

In the television series Spearchucker appears in six episodes during the early part of Season 1 of the series and was one of the original Swampmen, along with Trapper, Hawkeye, and Frank Burns, but the character was dropped from the series after 6 appearances.

Honestly, it was something to be experienced.

Sometime 500 BC West Africa entered the Iron Age. More sharply perhaps than Europe did; Europe retained a heroic memory of Bronze Age warriors, and held onto bronze longer than it needed to.

When the Bantu conquered these 2/3 African, 1/3 pygmy peoples they left very little behind them.

I was listening to some of the show tonight, and it really struck me when the black woman from FL said "and THAT'S why VP Biden demanded that the prosecutor be fired"--I couldn't believe they acknowledged it.

Shortly afterward Zoe whatshername went through the whole how many billions we've given to Ukraine, how the government had to scramble to spend their money once Trumop held aid up last year, and then asked several times "What happened between 2017, when Trump gave them a billion, and last year, when he held it up for his quid pro quo?"

All I could think was "Biden allowed himself to be filmed bragging about firing the prosecutor?"

Twilight Zone. Because my work would still be watched at least once a year (New Year's Eve/Day Marathon).

I would bet most of us would choose to have worked on Married With Children, or maybe Night Court.

Never watched either of those shows.

Now I would love to have written for F-Troop. Maybe not a hit, but I'd bet the off-camera jokes/hijinks would have been hysterical.

288 My birth parents were total screw ups. I was adopted by my father's sister and her husband at age 3. Best thing that ever happened to me. I grew up on a farm in east central Illinois 10 miles from the Indian state line.

A few months after I went to live with them I was goofing around in the farm yard when a rooster started chasing me and flying into the air to spur me. I was fleeing the rooster and screaming for help. My aunt came out of the house with a butcher's knife, grab the rooster and cut off its head. She said don't worry parker, it is for dinner.

That was when, at a young age, that I was somewhere safe and where people truly loved me. Her name was Grace and she became my real mother that day. I will never forget that day, my earliest memory. God bless you aunt Grace.

300 "Arthur Godfrey was another jerk."

Fun fact: there were two movies made in the '50s, at the height of his fame, that more or less portrayed him -- The Great Man (1956), directed by and starring Jose Ferrer, and A Face in the Crowd (1957) with Andy Griffith. In both cases the Godfrey character was fictionalized but still clearly shown as an asshole behind the smiling, folksy demeanor.

Probably should have included a sarc tag there. We're only mountainous if you compare us to Nebraska (when i take the motorcycle out for winding roads, I head into SW Wis). Also, easy to speed when not much to look at.

That said, though counties you were in probably were more likely dem leaning, they are also heavy on farming, and Trump has done well for them. They were early, it was pretty empty, they had a million questions about DC/political/govt. things. Very nice, both of them. I was able to answer most of their questions. They listened, were genuinely curious, and very gracious.

375 Have you ever watched Long Lost Family,? It is about people that were
given up for adoption and reunited with their long lost biological
family members. Through DNA and detective work they are able to be
reunited. It is really emotional and ends up being very pro-life, which
may not have been the original intent.

I have not. In my case it was rather anti-climatic. Mom hired an agency to track me down, they did and offered me her contact info if I wanted (and they were very clear that mom wanted me to know it was OK if I didn't.) I thought about it for a sec, said "Sure", then I called mom up and said "Hey, haven't seen you in 35 years, what you been up too?"

Here ma'am, you've been adopted. You're family

Each of is sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, son, daughter, mom, dad.

Call each of us what you will. But you've been adopted by everyone I can think of here, as kin.

And Thanksgiving Dinner is always mayhem. Just keep that in mind.

Notsothoreau? My condolences, ma'am.

Your Husband has been adopted by God Himself, and now secure in His embrace.

To which, we should all aspire.

True it always is...

We are enabled to believe that our life will be a well thought out transition....baby...toddler..youth...teenager...young adult...middle aged adult...older aged adult... aged adult....

yet the simple rhythm of the "life" trys to propose in our minds a guaranteed plan and then always shocks us somehow..death steps in..never according to plan...as if to say.. ya'all just don't get it. Yet we wail and Nash our teeth as if we missed some key juncture that we may have had the power to prevent death...the power that we humans "wish" we had....but never had.

396 You know the other part about MASH that always annoyed me? The way those doctors showed off by saving all those lives.

And don't get me started on the diversity. They welcomed an African-American doctor into the unit and their tent but only so he could help them win the football game. I am sure there was a scene on the cutting room floor where they lynched "Spearchucker" after the game was over so they did not have to pay him his share of the illegally gambled winnings!

And what about the baby the doctors saved in Tokyo? Again, nothing but grandstanding!

That Small Block Olds should be enshrined in a museum.

I'd install it in a "T" bucket Ford, just so people could see the damn thing. Same with the Pontiac 400 out of my Mom's '67 Catalina.

Only GM engine more engaging to me, is the aluminum Buick/Rover V-8.

We gave that to the Brits, far too soon.

GM was the worst with advancing engine technology. Every time they were on to something grand, they killed it and started from scratch, elsewhere.

Ford leapt ahead, if not in HP, then in concept, with the 4.6 V8 in the Mustang, Crown Vic and light duty F-150.

The Modular Engine lives on in the Fox engine, and the 700+ hp Shelby.

Which none of us here can afford.

Good examples; the Covair, which finally, by 1969 was a completely different car than the one which Nader killed, and the Fiero, which in it's final year got a real rear suspension, but never a manual transmission for the V6. Pontiac made about 1,800 of 'em. I'm not going to look up the Wiki, but it's there.

Between 16-20 weeks, an ultrasound revealed a brain deformity in my baby. It's often comorbid with other genetic disorders, so the doctor ordered an amniocentesis to check for a broad spectrum of problems.

I wasn't even considering abortion... unless Edward syndrome appeared. Most of those babies die within a year, and a few make it several years. All suffer immeasurably.

I discussed this here, and a Moron talked me out of even doing the test until after birth, letting the chips fall where they may, and not putting myself in the position I'd regret for the rest of my life.

Now, I have a baby that is looking (mostly) healthy. She's likely to need some surgery. She doesn't have any deadly congenital illness.

But, what if she had?

Purely from selfishness, I'd have liked to have held her, even if just once.

5'10" and I only fit in a Crossfire Convertible.

Minor Note. Lift the hood on a Crossfire, and every part under the hood is marked Mercedes-Benz. Even the engine.

It was a re-skinned Mercedes coupe. Period. Even the suspension pieces are marked with the three pointed star.

I'd say send your complaints to Stuttgart, but they'd fall there on deaf ears.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 24, 2020 02:17 AM (uKj5K)

446 The slave trade was similar to our fossil fuel trade. And for the same reasons. Cheap labor.
In the case of fossil fuels it was necessary for the operation of our cheap labor.
Anyone who takes a moment will understand why slavery was beginning to bother people. It's because of steam power. As the Steam Age (and then the piston engine and jet engine ages) began to spread even to mobile usage was the need for slavery declined.
It's far easier to make a moral stand about something that is no longer an economic necessity. Slaves are essentially cheap labor. Mobile, self operating, self repairable (to an extent), self reproducing etc.
Once machines began to be used as they got cheaper and more reliable the need for slaves declined.
Sad to say we didn't abolish slavery (actually the Brits started it because that's where the Age of Steam began) because of our morals but because it became a liability (for some notably mostly in the North where Steam was more widespread)
Now this has not spread to other countries as much because their slave trade is not about labor as much as it is about luxury and demonstrating wealth. Plus Islam itself is dedicated to Slavery to God thus they have no moral counter to the usage of slaves.
So the Black Community should erect a memorial to the true emancipator; the fuel driven engines of the modern age. Some would say electricity but that only put multiple "slaves" in the ordinary household and it is created with some sort of fuel to work engine.

We have stars like that. But without a tree on some of the prairie. And less intense.
