The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“If that was the end of it and you could guarantee that, I’d be very happy. This is a lady with a compulsion. Hopefully, she understands the extreme penalty she’d be under if this does reoccur. You get cynical after a while.” Gordon Holness

Quote II

Anybody know what the deal is with gay men and the formality they seem to prefer in names? Maybe your experience is different, but every gay man I have ever known – and remember, I lived in San Francisco just off Castro Street for several years – wanted to be called Robert, or Michael, or James. Never Bobby, Mike or Jimmy. A notable exception would be Pete Buttigieg. Though, I suppose if you are a gay man and Butt is already part of your name, adding Peter to the mix would be a bridge too far.Ammo Grrrll

Quote III

"The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it." Ayn Rand

Quote IV

“It comes as no surprise that folks are upping the ante now for Australia,” “The philanthro-porn we’re seeing now is another innovative way to grab the attention of donors who otherwise might remain apathetic.” Melanie Ulle, CEO of Denver-based Philanthropy Expert

Quote V

McSally laid out that simpering microphone jockey and showed that maybe she can take the fight to her gun-stealing, socialist-tolerating astronaut opponent and keep our seat.

Fredocon cruise director Bill “Ahoy” Kristol and the usual suspects wet themselves over her show of awesomeness – as a conservative, that’s a mighty credibility boost right there. By the way she owned her play and milked it for earned media afterwards, it looks like she figured out that she’s got zero chance if she’s just another GOP weenie too frightened by the over-paid, under-successful consultant class suits surrounding her to toss a haymaker at some punk reporter. It’s about time. Kurt Schlichter

Quote VI

"Mr. Hoyer from Maryland ... made a very revealing statement for anybody who's concerned about Constitutional rights -- and especially for me -- even those of my Democratic counterparts who worry about their communities, where they discuss police action and rights being violated,"Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA)

Quote VII

UNKNOWN MALE: "The reason I'm out here is that I do not support in any way, shape, or form Governor Northam and the Democrats' gun control. What I also don't support is the fact that every news piece you've seen on this, this weekend they always brought the issue of race as though it's nothing but white, rednecks and hillbillies out here who care for the Second Amendment. When actually black Americans, Asian Americans Hispanic Americans, Americans in general care about the Second Amendment. I work at a gun store part time and I can tell you that the number of customers I see of all races, all colors, all creeds who care about the Second Amendment and who just want to peaceably live their lives, enjoy their rights and the Second Amendment. So that's why I'm out here. And main — big media, mainstream media, be damned. If you take a good look at me you can see I'm a black American and all I'm out here for is to enjoy in my Second Amendment rights. That's why I'm here." Unknown male in VA

Quote VIII

If we are not careful, our colleges will produce a group of close-minded, unscientific, illogical propagandists, consumed with immoral acts. Be careful, 'brethren!' Be careful, teachers!” Martin Luther King, Jr.

As I write this ONT the Lobby Day (Advocacy Day) has not occurred in VA yet. Bitter Clinger has submitted this video.....LANGUAGE WARNING

Virginia follow up..............
Well done common sense, Constitution loving Virginians.

More than 20,000 people converged in the streets of Richmond, Virginia, on Monday to protest their right to bear arms in the face of swingeing state gun control laws set to be enacted later this year.

They started arriving before dawn – army veterans, stay-at-home-moms, attorneys, welders, democrats, republicans – united under banners defending the second amendment and, they believe, a constitution under attack.

And many of them came with their guns: AR-15s, long-guns and handguns. Governor Ralph Northam had issued a ban on a list of weapons including guns on Capitol Grounds but though the official rally was confined to a steel pen in the grounds sloping up to Virginia State Capitol, there were more people outside that perimeter and outside the scope of the ban.

The EU is a swamp. Officials have no idea how the real world works. Every day folk in Ireland and Germany are pissed.

Berlin and Dublin were ground to a halt in the past 48 hours amid growing outrage at EU regulations. Furious agricultural workers and farmers shut down roads across both Germany and Ireland in fear that environmental regulations are hurting their jobs. Thousands of farmers took part in the protest in Germany, as several hundred tractors blockaded main roads in Bavaria, Baden Württemberg and Bremen, as well as the German capital.

he Berlin mayor, Michael Müller, recognized that it was a "burden for Berlin," but "the farmers have their point of view”.

He added that locals would "have to tolerate" the upheaval.

The rallies coincided with Berlin’s Green Week, a food and agricultural fair which starts on Friday, which has often attracted huge waves of protests in recent years.

Farmers across Europe are increasingly alarmed about the future of the agricultural and environmental policy, following the EU's £852bn Green New Deal policy.

It sounds as if Virginia is an open primary state. Operation Chaos anyone? Hugh Hewitt is voting for Bernie in the Dem primary there.

Conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt announced that he planned to back Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Virginia Democratic primary because "he's authentic."

"Because Virginia allows early voting and because I don’t know where NBC or Salem will have me on March 3, I’m voting this week, and because it’s Virginia, I get to vote in the Democratic primary," Hewitt explained Sunday on Meet the Press. "I’m voting for Bernie Sanders. And I think a lot of people will because he’s authentic."

The conservative host clarified that he was not planning to vote for the independent Vermont senator in the 2020 general election and will instead support President Trump.

"I want a clear choice between the authentic, traditional socialist and all the people who just pretend to be," Hewitt said about the rest of the Democratic field.

There is napping and then there is napping hibernation. Scientists are researching human hibernation.

Bears may be the most famous example, but they aren’t the only animals capable of hibernating.

Various types of squirrels, bats, and even birds can also lower their bodies’ core temperatures, putting themselves in a state of dormancy for weeks or even months at a time — and one day, humans could join them on that list.

“We couldn’t find any showstoppers, any reason it wouldn’t be possible,” John Bradford, an aerospace engineer researching human hibernation for NASA, recently told The Atlantic.

Bradford’s NASA work should clue you into one of the reasons scientists are so interested in human hibernation: it could be useful for deep-space travel.

I've given up on attempting to figure out what makes people tick. More apps, more loss of privacy and perhaps freedom.

An app that is supposed to be a fun activity for dashcam users to broadcast their camera feeds and drives is actually allowing people to scrape and store the real-time location of drivers across the world.

BlackVue is a dashcam company with its own social network. With a small, internet-connected dashcam installed inside their vehicle, BlackVue users can receive alerts when their camera detects an unusual event such as someone colliding with their parked car. Customers can also allow others to tune into their camera's feed, letting others "vicariously experience the excitement and pleasure of driving all over the world," a message displayed inside the app reads.

OK, I get it. This next link comes from Slate. Evil bastard Tech companies rated.

The Evil List
Which tech companies are really doing the most harm? Here are the 30 most dangerous, ranked by the people who know.

Maybe it was fake news, Russian trolls, and Cambridge Analytica. Or Travis Kalanick’s conniption in an Uber. Or the unmasking of Theranos. Or all those Twitter Nazis, and racist Google results, and conspiracy theories on YouTube. Though activists, academics, reporters, and regulators had sent up warning flares for years, it wasn’t until quite recently that the era of enchantment with Silicon Valley ended. The list of scandals—over user privacy and security, over corporate surveillance and data collection, over fraud and foreign propaganda and algorithmic bias, to name a few—was as unending as your Instagram feed. There were hearings, resignations, investigations, major new regulations in Europe, and calls for new laws at home. There was an industry that insisted it now valued privacy and safety but still acted otherwise. There was WeWork, whatever that was.

The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Yoko, Sean, and Julian Lennon all attend. Paul McCartney did not attend, sending instead a letter stating that continuing business differences with the other ex-Beatles was the reason for his absence.

What a Dick.

Some people are oblivious. And others are just plain Genius Award Winners.

A customer at a supermarket in South America faced the wrath of disgruntled employees when they parked their car in the wrong spot.

According to Fox News, the driver parked their small Peugeot 208 hostaback in the shopping cart area of a COTO shopping centre in Temperley Argentina, in the Buenos Aires province.

That’s a top score in the being-a-jerk department, so employees responded by putting the shopping carts in their rightful spot anyway, all around the vehicle, boxing it in.

They universally thought that the British were insane. They mentioned the border between Northern Ireland and Republican Ireland, but this was not the primary reason for their gob-smacked confusion and horror over Britain leaving.

We considered going tankless, but due to time and cost, went with a regular tank (we had need to replace it quickly, and having to run new venting made it more expensive).

One thing I came across while researching was that monthly maintenance was necessary for a tankless, otherwise it could fail (though I'll leave it to those who actually own one to verify that).

50 McCartney always struck me as the driving force behind the Beatles. To the extent that it annoyed the shit out of the rest of them. In retrospect the band could not survive under those circumstances and no member could be replaced and they continue to be the Beatles. The band had to break up. At least in 1969. Whether they regrouped is another matter we will never know.

And boy do they push apps hard in stores. I went into a 7-11 to get coffee one morning and was asked if I had the app. I said no. They offered it for the "reward" (every 12th cup free, I think). I declined. I had to decline three times.

A lot of them are new since then - like FISA and the many enabling acts.

But it was obvious what was happening and why.
"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone?"

164 travel advice - any Florence hotel recs? Air bnb?
Posted by: vmom 2020 at January 20, 2020 10:20 PM (G546f)

I HAVE OPINIONS!

Not sure how many travelers you are looking at.

But, this is where sra blaster and I stayed in Florence:

Guest House Bel Duomo

Literally walk out the door and look around the corner, and the Duomo is RIGHT THERE.

Location is fantastic. Very affordable! Cheap, even, for Florence.

What's the catch - it's not a Marriott. It is kinda of a half-step between a hostel and a hotel. Private rooms, and private bathrooms - but the private bathroom is not in the private room. If you are driving, you have to drive there and it is, well, right there by the Duomo. So traffic is, umm, challenging. And certain times some of the streets you need to drive on are closed. And parking is kind of weird - they give you a voucher to work your away around to a parking garage.

And breakfast? It's continental. But it is a voucher to go to a cafe around the corner.

The rooms are nice and comfy and you can sleep there. This is the key.

BUT. Location location location. You are right where you want to be.

You can get up early in the morning to get in line for L'Academia which is about 5 blocks away. Then after you see David, hoof it over to the line for the Uffizi.

And the restaurants...

181 what the deal is with gay men

-
Some Moron mentioned Downfall the other day so I decided to watch it. In one scene, after being denied permission from Hitler to leave with his family, one big shot SS doctor, Ernst-Robert Grawitz, kills himself and his family with two grenades. I knew nothing of Grawitz so I looked him up. His big thing was to "eradicate the perverted world of the homosexual" and research into attempts to "cure" homosexuality. This involved experimentation on inmates in Nazi concentration camps. I don't know what kind of medical experiments he did to cure homosexuality but it sounds bad.

I've never been through Paris, but I have been through Amsterdam. It was a nightmare but that was *not* the airport's fault. Everything got fucked up and I had 85 minutes to actually enter the Netherlands, get my bag, check back in, get back through security, get to the gate and make the plane.

It should have been impossible. Everyone who worked for airport or the government with whom I interacted cleared the way to help me make it. From border/passport control, security, baggage, airport information workers - everyone. They all were extremely helpful and helped shepherd me through a big confusing airport efficiently to make my impossible connection.

I made the connection. I was treated extremely well by the Amsterdam airport and various authorities.

Oy... I've never been to Paris. I've managed to avoid France, aside from Port-Bou, which is a bad place plagued by rude and pecunious, corrupt civil servants.

I've heard it's cripplingly expensive to visit, however.

Amsterdam's pretty cool. Weird town, but fun for a day or two if it's just a layover.

And, unlike Venice, its canals aren't fetid sewers.

236 Kiss - inescapable cultural characters, but I never heard them, couldn't tell you anything they did -- except, I think they appeared in some comic book back when, maybe? Kiss meet the Fantastic Four or something?

but

Paperback Writer - what a great burst of sound right from the start. Prime Beatles - the "Rubber Soul/Revolver (virtual double album) days.* When the yeah yeah yeah moptops reached A Whole. Nother. Level. And took us with them or did we bring them along. It's kind of lost in the haze of Norwegian wood.

Single b/w Rain ((when they had A's on both sides of every 45)). Released May 30, 1966, BUT in the US, it didn't appear on an album until Hey Jude, 1970.

I have been to both and both are worth visiting. If you are talking a layover that gives you time to really see a city, then for sure it just must be Paris. Amsterdam has its fans, no doubt there. But if you are comparing the places as must see cities, it is not really that close.

257 On touring - IIRC L'Accademia opens at 9 am, Uffizi at 10.

If you go L'Accademia at 830 there won't be a line, and you will feel weird standing there by yourself. If you walk around and come back 10 minutes later a busload of Japanese tourists or something will be in front of you.

So go early and wait. And then when you get in the door, there are tons of other art things to see on the walls. Ignore them. Bust it to the back to get to David before that busload of Japanese tourists gets there. Get your perspective pic with your hands on his penis and then casually look at the other art on the way out. Then walk over to the Uffizi. You will have a wait because you did not go their first but its okay. If you don't like waiting pay one of the tour guides who bribes your way to the front. Be prepared for Madonna and Child overload.

I hate to give an opinion without rock solid evidence, it is my way. But I have been to Venice and it is not my favorite Italian city. If you are planing to spend time in major Italian cities, as a general rule I would allocate less time to Venice. For sure go there, but it is not a place I would choose to linger in.

There was something about the commercialism of the place, the thousands of Japanese taking photos, and the crap floating in the canals that just didn't do it for me.

My favorite moment from Venice:

My friend and I saw a stream of people stepping over/around a drunk bag lady right by the big train terminal. We stopped to see if she needed a hand off the steps, and realized she wasn't drunk, but obviously ill. So we got the train station to call an ambulance.

It was a good reminder that most people are not like Americans.

303 Hey everybody.

For American Kestrel and anyone else who's interested, here's my latest Fast Foodie column.

BANH MI 2 ELETRIC BOOGALOO: LEE'S SANDWICHES, THE McDONALDS OF VIETNAMESE FAST FOOD?

By (qdpsteve)
"The Fast Foodie"

Could Lee's Sandwiches be fairly called the McDonalds of Vietnamese fast food?

In our last episode of the Fast Foodie, I reviewed my first banh mi sandwich, procured at Banh Mi Saigon 168 in Westminster. This week's column continues my quest to try new Asian foods.

As shared earlier, I'm unfamiliar with all but the most common Asian tasties such as orange chicken, kung pao, garlic shrimp and others. I still remember Chun King canned Chinese kits sold years ago in supermarkets, but don't think you need a Masters in Manchurian munchies to know they, while delicious, weren't quite authentic. I liked that first banh mi, but have no clue how they should really taste.

Could Lee's Sandwiches have the secret? They appear to be the most successful Vietnamese fast food chain anywhere. Per Wikipedia, they have almost 60 locations in the U.S., started up in the early 1980s and have three nearby stores in Stanton, Garden Grove and Westminster.

I tried Lee's at Westminster Mall, as per Google it's this area's most-liked location, with a 4.4 rating from 17 reviews. It's the standard mall eatery with a monitor menu and ordering stand crowded with side items such as chips, promotions, and a bucket of plastic straws. (Take that, Sacramento!) Main entrees are divided into "Asian Sandwiches" and "European Sandwiches" boards. They also offer milk teas, smoothies and Vietnamese-style coffee drinks, which I never even knew existed.

I did the same as last time and ordered a chicken banh mi sandwich on a baguette, mini egg rolls and Pepsi. The rolls seemed intriguing-- 25 mini shrimp egg rolls for $2.99 (what??) with sweet-and-sour sauce.

As you can see in the photos, everything came very streamlined-looking, as expected from a fast food chain. The sandwich had all the same veggies except cucumber. I took some bites and felt comfortable as it was almost the same flavor as Banh Mi Saigon 168's beef sandwich, just a tiny bit less robust. The baguette was fresh and flaky.

When Lee's says MINI egg rolls, they mean it. These were pretty much Asian-style fries so thin, I don't know how they get the shrimp inside. They had classic fried-fry flavor. The packeted sweet-and-sour sauce sweetened them slightly.

I also couldn't help but notice their packaging motif is red, white and blue, as if to say 'Vietnamese food made for Americans.' And the "European Sandwiches" caught my eye; I'd like to try the Lee's Club.

The Fast Foodie's Far Eastern fare familiarization fest will continue. I now feel I have a better idea of what banh mi should taste like, but there's far more than what first appears to the eye and tongue. More adventures coming soon!

Agr÷ed, and many thanks for another great ont. You do a great job.
I think my fear of heights goes back to when I was a little kid and wandering through the great aunt's house on Thanksgiving. I was opening doors trying to find my dad one was a pantry one was a bathroom and then I opened up one that was Stark and stepped inside to turn on the light.
It turned out to be the basement and I fell to the floor. I swear to this day that's where my fear of heights comes from. And it got a hell of a lot worse when I went to Branson and went to Silver City or whatever that is holy moly. You enter the center of the cave and you're like 35 stories high on these steps that are open it scared the s*** out of me. But I had to do it with my nieces and nephews.
Has anyone heard from Slap today? Sounded like he might have to go to the hospital just wondered if anybody has heard from him. Prayers up from here for Slap.

I truly loved Florence, and I spent no time at all studying the history of the place. It was just a great place to walk around, and look at things, and EAT! A sandwich of unbelievably good cured pork products, bought from a tiny sidewalk storefront, eaten while sitting on a curb, washed down with a plastic glass of surprisingly good and cheap Brunello? Yes please.

I think I got lucky, because I visited in February, and lucked out with the weather. No crowds. Breezed into the Uffizi with no prior planning. Walked into restaurants with no reservations.

374 one tip that has truly made a difference in my life. Don't judge a place based on some shitty place you stayed in because you were on an all inclusive trip or just didn't know any better.

If you do your own research, you can stay in crazy awesome areas in the middle of things for a song. So many people on cruises or bus trips stay in the cheapest dumps ever, and some are a good hour from the city center. i say forget the tours and do it yourself. you will get a lot more out of it and have a lot more pride in the whole thing. Also, you will get a much better experience.

Make damn sure you buy the Travel Insurance, coving your entire trip. Air, rental cars, hotel reservations, damage to any, illness, etc.

It's cheap, and it'll pay you back if you have to pay extra for any of those things.

Galveston is the 4th largest Cruise Ship home port in the U.S., and the fastest growing.

I drive a great many ships passengers back to either of the Houston airports when their ship returns.

Just this week, we had two ships return to port delayed by fog and a major search and rescue effort.

The people who'd bought Trip Insurance, were bothered by the delay, but calm when facing higher return flight costs.

Those without? Not happy campers, I can attest.

BUY IT.

And then we'll all pray you don't have to claim a dime of it's potential value.

I would help you if I could. My info is so dated now that it would likely be of little use. The only thing I can say is do your research. Find travel communities online or use the old school travel loges.

I don't recall where i found the last place I stayed in Florence but it was right next to Dantes boyhood home. I paid less than a hundred bucks though the neighboring hotel charged a good 5 bills. The fun was researching this stuff, at least that is what I enjoyed.

But Paris, Madrid and London were built as working cities and as such are able to handle such things as tourists and therefore, if you must be a tourist, be a tourist in a working city like Paris, Madrid or London.

So, you can do it. They're called freighter cruises. A lot of freighters have spare cabins and you can book passage on them. From what I hear (I have never done this, but I have looked into it), the rooms are typically comfortable but spartan. The food is good and you eat with the crew. Nothing is on-demand like on a cruise ship - meal times are meal times but they're good. Few amenities. You'll be tuned out with no WiFi/cellular, etc. Bring a book and comfortable shoes, so you can walk around when you tire of reading.

I went to the Evergreen Aviation museum outside of Portland with a friend. They have the Spruce Goose. He lived there and was in the aviation industry and it was *not* his first time going and he took me through the gigantic freaking place. The main building is so big they have an original 747 as a hood ornament on the roof ridge.

Anyway, we are going around and looking at airplanes. About a half hour in, I turned to him and said, "You said they have the Spruce Goose here. Where is it?"

He started laughing and said, "You're standing under its wing."

My perspective suddenly shifted. Here I was, looking at normal airplanes from various eras - things I could comprehend - in the shadow of the Spruce Goose.

It was so big I literally didn't see it.

Yeah definitely Rome for the win where the food is concerned. The food was off the chart. I found a place right around the corner from my hotel that had seating outside, and that was right around the corner from the US embassy. It was not expensive at all, and was really good. Other than pastry, it's not actually recommended for baking. It makes cookies bland somehow. But I put it on everything.

470 Paul Stanley [above, of KISS] liked to hug his own butt when he was on stage. Turn his back to the audience, stick his ass out, & reach back & fondle it. Really. Unique & creepy!

I've read enough, & listened to Gene Simmons enough, to form the opinion that Gene didn't like Paul Stanley very much.

For a rock star of the first magnitude, Gene Simmons was/is unusually focused & down to earth. If there was such a thing as a rock star who is normal, that would be Simmons, Alice Cooper, & very few others.

A word to the wise, be cautious with firmware updates -- for anything, even a mouse.

My new screamer (well, it's a year old) is not the most stable system in the world. Still haven't got the kinks worked out of the BIOS and the low level stuff. In UEFI mode, weird shit happens.

Well, said weird shit was my Logitech mouse with the unifying receiver decided it needed to update the firmware on said receiver. I let it have at it, and bam, "update failed", and then the system hung up hard, requiring reset.

Well, after reset, it turned out the little mouse receiver dongle was bricked.

Long story short, but I was able to download a tool and reflash the firmware on another machine and I got it working again.

So there you go. Now, when I put the UEFI in compatibility mode and do a regular ol' MBR style boot, none of this weird shit happens.

Thanks. I will bear that in mind, but it's a long detour for me, unless I can combine it with a visit with family in Vancouver, B.C.

In doggie news, Pogo was back to the vet today, after 48 hours on gabapentin and antibiotics failed to relieve the pain in her pelvic region. As soon as she got in the front door of the vet clinic, she peed voluminously on the floor, which really scotched the bladder infection idea.

They took X-rays, and they appear to show degenerative disc disease in her L4 - L5 region. The pain from this can be the reason for her not peeing or pooping as per normal. X-rays also showed no indication of bowel blockage.

So her new scrip is for pain-killers, NSAIDS, and muscle relaxant, which may allow for some healing to take place in her spine.

496 When it comes to first names, mine has many incarnations.

There's, of course, Richard. I use that only when writing my signature and in other formal circumstances, like when I am rightfully addressed as King Richard or somesuch. (Hey, it's what I often identify as so fuck off.)

But then there are the short versions. Rick, Ricky, Dick, Dicky, Rich and Richie. Of those, the last four were definitely a no-no in my book and were never used. I only allowed myself to be called Ricky by aunts and uncles as they had the right of age; one of my aunts called me Ricky 'til the day she died a decade ago. Any other person who tried to use that were quickly corrected. I preferred Rick, as my nick here proves. Even my Mom never called me Richard -- unless she was really pissed at me. Then came the middle name, too, along with the last one. If my Mom was mad and yelled 'Rick!', I breathed a sign of relief. But if I heard 'Richard XXXXXX ZXXXXXXX', it was time to run for the hills, which was difficult as a child as hills were hundreds of miles away.

Yeah, Alberta is a long way from I-5. Edmonton is about 800 miles from Seattle. Not exactly a quick drive.

I know you love cars, so that's why I mentioned the LeMay Car Museum. It is the largest single collection of American cars in the world.

And they have Studebakers!

At one time, it was over 3,500 cars. Mr LeMay started the garbage service for Pierce County (Tacoma) after WWII. God-fearing and blue collar, his hobby was to buy old cars, mostly American. He started buying old cars in the '60's. He would show up in an old pickup and overalls, and the retiree or widow selling the old car in the barn or garage had no idea how rich the guy was. He just kept buying and buying all kinds of cars for decades and then bought cheap warehouses or buildings that he could store them.

After Mr LeMay passed, in his 80's, the Missus and kids got together and tried to figure out the best way forward.

Many duplicate cars were sold at auction, the LeMay - America's Car Museum was built in Tacoma ( I believe that the City of Tacoma floated some bonds to pay for construction) to show off a part of the collection.

Later, another building Mr LeMay bought to store some of his thousands of cars, is now a second museum, about 30 minutes away in Spanaway, where they keep a lot of special cars in the collection.

If anyone is going to visit Seattle, do drive south a half hour and visit the LeMay - America's Car Museum if you like cars, or history. There are volunteers that will answer questions for you. One of them is a good buddy, and he says the list of volunteers keeps growing.

It is really a cool place.

I might as well rant about something else that pissed me off today. Exploitation of elderly patients. My 92 yr old father's urologist decided he wasn't emptying his bladder completely and prescribed catheterization once a day before bed.

He refuses to let my mother do that, so it's sort of moot.

At any rate, the doc signed him up with this catheter supply outfit.

And they are the biggest scammers on the planet. They called and left a message to call them for important information they needed. My mother calls them, and all it was was trying to sign her up for all sorts of other shit.

One of those was this "alert" thingy -- you know, the help I've fallen and I can't get up shit. They wouldn't take no for an answer, saying, "Oh not, Mrs. X, you *NEED* this, what's the name on your bank account? We need the account number too".

I got to meet General LeMay, and his wife, on Lackland AFB. 1977.

They were driving a rental car, and I stopped 'em at the Main Gate to ascertain I.D.

The General was very gratified to realize that I knew of him, and the history attached to his name.

He returned my salute, and then offered a very heartfelt handshake.

DAMN, but the lack of the cel phone camera in those days.

My father has had prostate trouble for years. A few years, he had it reamed out, and the results weren't as well as expected.

He dribbles all the time, and we finally got him to wear the "briefs" as we euphemistically call them.

The past year, it seems like he's had a constant UTI, and they can't get get rid of it. The urologist is concerned with that, and what's going on.

My father is not the most cooperative patient in the world, to say the least.

I will check it out based on your rec. For sure i thought it was was the worst idea ever, along with Hawaii 5-0. The latter makes it clear that even if they made a good show it could NEVER have the same cultural impact.

i mentioned Jack Lord and everyone knew who i was talking about. He was as big in Hawaii as Don Ho. And both were celebrities when that meant sometthing. Today no one cares because every other person claims to be a celebrity. I know I don't care about them. I have seen enough people who could not pass an AP history test so as to not want to meet another again.
Jack Lord meant something in that day because celebrities still meant something. That someone thinks they can do Magnum PI again really tells is all. "You can't do it again you doof. How about Simon and Simon with Paul Simon and some other jagoff named Simon.

The time FOUR cruise ships were stranded in the gulf, overnight, due to fog?

Yeah.

Only three of them cleared customs the next day. Then at 10:30pm, Customs said "fuckit, we're going home."

The fourth was moored alongside a grain dock, until the 2nd morning.

THOSE were not Happy Campers, when they disembarked.

That and the fact that the Air Force deploys the A-10 in Tactical Fighter Wings and the squadrons therein are designated as Fighter Squadrons, including the A-10 squadrons.

The Navy and Marine Corps would designate them as Attack or Light Attack; they would probably be USMC aircraft if they belonged to the sea services. I know the Marines wouldn't mind that at all.

When the F-14 was taken out of service in the US the air frames and parts were shredded to keep them from finding their way into Iranian hands.

694 I know several non-gay men who also are very serious about the Formal Names. (some in-laws) My guess, from observation, is that it's a character trait of men who Take Themselves Very Seriously.

I'm late to this discussion but I am a non-gay man who won't accept being referred to by other-than-my-name. It started in the second grade where 4 boys with the same first name were assigned to a single class. The teacher started assigning diminutives to 3 of us and I didn't care for that. I informed here that I had a perfectly usable name and would answer only to that.

My father, in possibly the only decent thing he ever did for me in my life, backed me up on that. I've never looked back. Bobby, Jimmy, Teddy, whatever...those are for friends and friends will accept your preference if you choose to not use them.
