The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I stand for lancing this festering boil of a war. End it. After nearly 20 years, it’s not worth one more American limb or life. Kurt Schlichter

Quote II

“Since I am the adult, and he was just a teenager, it is my fault, and I accept full blame for the situation. So that’s how I’m guilty of this crime. I messed up big-time.”Ramsey BethAnn Bearse

Quote III

“It is difficult to imagine anything more unconstitutional, more violative of the intention of the Framers, more of a denial of basic due process and civil liberties, more unfair to the president and more likely to increase the current divisiveness among the American people,” Alan Dershowitz

Quote IV

“They never overcame being blamed by authorities for being somehow responsible for a heinous act of terrorism — something they would never do," Nicole McKee

Quote V

“A middle ground had to be found between dress code due to faith and the passion of being in the operating theatre. I am so happy my vision has become a reality and that these headscarves are now available for all of the staff.

“I’m really happy and looking forward to seeing if we can endorse this nationally.”Junior doctor Farah Roslan

Families that eat out at restaurants and consume large amounts of sweets and alcohol are likely to have a higher carbon footprint than MEAT eaters, study claims

Experts studied the carbon footprints of around 60,000 Japanese households

Many families in Japan have gone vegan to reduce their carbon emissions

However, meat was found less impactful than eating out, sweets and alcohol

The findings highlight the dietary changes needed to combat climate change

Too little, too late? Trump administration ends war on incandescent light bulbs.

U.S. rolls back standards on energy saving light bulbs

The Trump administration on Friday said it has finalized a decision to roll back a 2007 rule calling for energy-efficient light bulbs, a move that states including New York and California are challenging in the courts.

The administration finalized a proposal made in September to roll back the standard that Congress passed in 2007 when George W. Bush, a Republican, was president and which was to come into effect next year. The Department of Energy said that increasing the efficiency of bulbs could cost consumers more than 300% compared to incandescent bulbs and that Americans do not need regulation because many are already buying efficient bulbs.

“The American people will continue to have a choice on how they light their homes,” said Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette.

Don't fall over and hurt yourself. Congress found something they could agree upon.

Congress passes legislation expanding robocall penalties
The TRACED Act passed the Senate unanimously and is headed to Trump's desk.

The US Senate unanimously passed legislation Thursday that aims to end the scourge of robocalls. The TRACED Act had already passed the House of Representatives, so it's now headed to President Donald Trump's desk for signature.

The new legislation allows federal authorities to seize the profits of robocall operators and assess an additional penalty of up to $10,000 per call. That's not actually new—current law already allows penalties of up to $10,000. What the new law does is extend the time period the FCC can assess these penalties from one year to three. It also pushes telephone companies to implement SHAKEN and STIR, a suite of authentication protocols that will help the fight against robocalls.

Not your typical Genius Award Winner. Bellagio Bandit: How One Man Robbed Vegas’ Biggest Casino and Almost Got Away - Tony Carleo stole $1 million in chips – then checked himself into casino’s hotel to live like a king

There’s a story Tony Carleo likes to tell about a visit he made to Las Vegas a decade ago when he was in his early twenties.

“I was sitting in a casino,” he says, “and there was a crowd starting to gather around a craps table, people two or three deep because everyone wanted to see.”

A man was betting on hard eight, that the dice would land showing exactly four and four before he threw a seven or another combination that added up to eight. It was a long-shot bet, but the man hit it, then hit it again, his $5 turning into 50 then 500. Each time he let it ride. Carleo elbowed his way through the crowd to get closer to the action. On and on the man rolled, somehow avoiding crapping out – he hit hard eight again and then once more. The crowd of people exploded. To hit hard eight once was improbable, to hit it four times in row nearly impossible. The dealer slid forward the man’s winnings, a short tower of brightly colored chips worth $50,000 coming to rest where once there had been a single $5 chip.

I don't care how you do it. Just do it.

A judgment in a Dutch court has left the Netherlands government with a legal requirement to perform the politically suicidal task of cutting emissions 25% by the end of 2020.

Netherlands climate change: Court orders bigger cuts in emissions

20 December 2019

The highest court in the Netherlands has upheld a ruling requiring the government to slash greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25% of 1990 levels by the end of next year.

The case was brought six years ago by the Urgenda environment group in a bid to force ministers to go well beyond EU targets.

However, the chances of the government reaching the target look slim.

By the end of 2018, emissions were down only 15% on 1990 levels.

This will be fun to watch.

Battle of the flags. If you can dish it out you better know how to take it.

A pro-LGBT stunt at a Missouri high school backfired recently when students responded by hoisting the rebel flag.

A student at West Plains High School first handed out small pro-LGBT rainbow flags on Dec. 9, according to KY3.

It didn’t take long for other students to rebel.

The next day, a group of rebellious students raised a Confederate flag in the school’s lunchroom, the outlet reported.

What happens when you allow your homeland to be overrun with criminals? Simple, you just don't keep crime stats anymore.

The Swedish government told the country’s main authority on crime to “correct” their reports in order to cover-up “politically sensitive” data, according to a study by Linköping University.

Sweden’s Crime Prevention Council (Brå censored their own statistics after political pressure from higher-ups, according to the research.

The study reveals that Brå personnel were summoned to the Justice Ministry to change their findings and that a “silence culture” based on “political steering” has been created.

“A number of interviewees testify, among other things, about how Brå’s management directly applied pressure on them to change their findings which, for political, ideological or other reasons, were not desirable,” the report stated.

Failing to perform due diligence leads to tonight's Genius Award Winner.

In New Mexico, Joseph Allen, 40, is facing charges after authorities say he stole a car without realizing that another guy was still sleeping inside the vehicle at the time.

Joseph Allen of Las Cruces, New Mexico, was arrested and charged with stealing the running car in Vado, New Mexico, on Wednesday, reports the Las Cruces Sun-News.

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office says the sleeping guy, Ignacio Baca of Las Cruces NM, said it all started after he fell asleep in the back seat of his girlfriend’s 2006 Toyota Corolla, as one does.

17 Just watched the clip of Juan Williams from the Five. I think it was from Friday's show.

He thinks the cadets were flashing a white power symbol, and doing it knowingly. He continued to make this argument even after Jesse Waters explained the stupid circle game thing, and after he was told that the academy did an extensive investigation and found that the young men were in fact playing the circle game. The kids in my son's highschool do this EVERY day.

Four other people at that table were telling Juan the facts, and he just stonewalls them, then brings up pepe the frog! OMG, it's *another* white supremicist symbol!

Unreal. Denies reality and tries to deflect with other arguments that aren't relevant. Cognitive dissonance, thy name is Juan.

You can still buy a conventional top-loader that'll work just fine.

The real sin is them taking the phosphates out of the laundry soap.

Go to a hardware store, and buy a box of TSP. If a Lowe's or Home Depot, it'll be the same aisle as all the commercial cleaning materials and supplies.

Scoop to measure with your particular load of wash, and you'll see the difference with the first load.

Makes your dishwasher work better, too.

I got.at.least twenty titles.thrown at.me and one dictionary that surely missed me so badly the fella who threw it must have blown out his rotator cuff. Long story short.... Horatio Hornblower was the hands down most mentioned title....so it's on order first and I promise to endeavor to persevere and read every book recommended. Thanks to all who helped out.

Posted by: Cuthbert the Witless at December 22, 2019 10:16 PM (9dzlp)

The thing to remember about the Hornblower books is that they were not written in the same order as his career progression. Forester started with Beat to Quarters, then I think went to Ship of the Line and Flying Colours, before going back to the beginning of Hornblower's career and starting with Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, etc. The "prequels" (or at least some of them) are actually collections of short stories that were individually published and then collected and released as books grouped in chronologial order.

They are all very good, although for my money the battles in Beat to Quarters are the most exciting, even though the narrative style in that book (Forester's first) was very different from succeeding volumes.

The 1951 movie with Gregory Peck (Captain Horatio Hornblower) does a pretty good job with Beat to Quarters, Ship of the Line and Flying Colours, too. Some liberties taken with the details of the narrative, but generally follows the books fairly closely.

Step out of the Mass-Market Retail World, and into the splendor that is the World of Commercial Equipment.

Maytag Commercial Top Loader. Like they'd use in a Laundrymat, but without the Coin Box.

You can buy a used Speed Queen (the absolute best), but Speed Queen will yank the franchise of a store who sells a brand-new one to a non-commercial end-user.

Either way, you want a model with NO computer of any kind inside. If at all possible.

Old fashioned clock-work, manually rotated cycle and timer selection switches RULE.

That's for your laundry. As regards the kitchen?

I don't have the funds for commercial kitchen equipment, nor the footprint and cabinet configuration to fit those in. But, would if I could.

What I *did* recently install though, was a commercial Overhead Sprayer and Faucet on the kitchen sink.

Huge improvement over the previous "consumer grade" crap.

Nah flush all that shit down the toilet, nevermind that it is what has helped to keep Star Wars popular. Decent story ideas in video games? Nah, fuck that. 160 Either way, you want a model with NO computer of any kind inside.

Jim

---

Word. For my kitchen equipment - that's the route I took: NO electronics of any kind on my range/ovens - simple on/off gas burners. Same with the fridge. Commercial sprayer - if you think about it, the kitchen faucet is one of the most use items in your home. Used dozens of times a day, every day.

Built like tanks and a bit pricey but any maintenance items I can do (minus the compressor).

162 ..Speed Queen has a category for "home products" on their website, and from what I've seen those all say "commercial heavy duty" on them. I have a Speed Queen top load washer/dryer set.

Of course they also make much heavier duty equipment for hotels, laundromats, etc.

Posted by: AF at December 22, 2019 10:43 PM (RsPQq)

I'll ask my local S.Q. vendor about that line. I know as of two years ago, he was carrying *only* the high-end commercial stuff. After all, that's the market that seeks him out.

It'd be interesting to know if the gear-trains, pumps and timers are the same as what's in the premium series.

Talk about equipment made to last, be it Speed Queen or Maytag Commercial.

Or, most American made appliances from the 1940s through the early 1970s.

164 That bit about expanding penalties for robocalls is bullshit - because these guys are all overseas, using VIOP to do what they do. If penalties worked, they would have already been working and they aren't.

I can end Robocalls in days - pass a law mandating that any phone carrier allowing a robocall will automatically be liable to the target of such call for $10,000 per offense. I don't think it's much of an exaggeration to suppose that robocalls would become a distant thing of the past within 48 hours.

Bernie Sanders is struggling with voters over age 50. It turns out, those who've already made their money, paid off their student loans, and are eligible for actual Medicare, aren't really up for voting for Bernie Sanders, and it's starting to have an impact on his ability to win in states with early primaries.

So, The Wall Street Journal reports, Sanders is arming his young followers with "family persuasion guides" so that they can more effectively ruin Christmas by injecting politics into the conversation at every opportunity and it starts by suggesting that students remind their non-socialist parents and grandparents that they'll be dead one day.

Okay, this is true, but the problem with LED, which my electrician let me in on, is that every LED is kind of different, and the ratings on each really have to be paid attention to, unlike incandescent lightbulbs which will actually work without flickering regardless of the watts.

LED lightbulbs, unlike incandescent bulbs, need to warm up first, and then, if a different Luminosity than from others in the room using the same light dimmer switch, will flicker regardless. This makes an electricians or decorator's job a little more challenging that just putting in any old LED bulb. Incandescent bulbs are hard pressed, though, to give off very white bright light, thus are unlikely to give a hospital ward type glare that is so sought after nowadays among hipsters. They burn softer and more amber or yellowish.

220 Everyone, I have yet another question for you tonight. This one is kind of serious though. I posted this originally in the food thread but hope it's okay if I repeat this post as well here in the ONT...

I guess I REALLY need to step up my Atkins/keto game to a much more serious degree, because besides my heavy weight (I'm hovering around 320), I'm now experiencing weakness in my right arm. I do NOT want that to continue and am seeing my doctor on Fri Dec 27.

I may have to reduce the amount of statins I take, I found out those can lead to muscle weakness. I take Simvastatin every day, but I've taken it for years and these problems only popped up in the last couple months.

I also read that if you can't take or have to reduce your statin, you can supplement it. I hope that's correct or that my impression is correct. Anyway, so now I'm looking at high-rated probiotics and Omega-3 tabs at Amazon. I'm cool with spending money on those each month if it brings back my arm.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

235 LED lightbulbs, unlike incandescent bulbs, need to warm up first, and then, if a different Luminosity than from others in the room using the same light dimmer switch, will flicker regardless.

As in, it just started today? Or for how long now?

My experience with observing statin related muscle weakness is that it usually hits the thighs.

Tingling, weakness, etc sounds like nerve issues.

If it is just starting, please ask someone there with you to do some stroke protocols.

240 Anna, I think it's too much sugar, sweets and soft drinks; the fact that I also have untreated (but it's always been somewhat mild) carpal tunnel syndrome; the fact that I've typed almost every day for the past 40 years; not enough exercise; not enough nutrients in my diet; and the fact I'm officially diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I also failed to follow through with muscle exercises I was prescribed about five years ago when I last had physical therapy, although that was for my lower back.

It looks like I'm gonna have to make some real and major changes, whether I want to make them or not, and make them sooner rather than later, finally. No more messing around.

244 Everyone, I should have mentioned: the weakness issues with my arm have been going on for a few months now.

The tingling and numbness, though, is kinda new; last week or so.

Yes, I have plenty of ERs available nearby. If anything really goes south from here I will visit one. But I admit I'm hoping I can hold off until I can see my regular PCP on Friday.

My hunch is that she'll need to reduce and/or change my statin, tell me I need to switch to a much stricter diet, really step up the exercise, and prescribe more physical therapy, all of which I'm okay with.

Also, heart attack...my friend died in his mid-30's from it...that was his first symptom that he felt riding in the car with his dad to the grocery store...he died before he got to the hospital. If you do decide to go to the ER, do NOT drive yourself there. Call 911 and take the ambulance, instead.

Muldoon or other medical types could explain it better, but it has to do with how obligated the hospital becomes as to a FULL course of treatment, or something..less.

The degree of follow-up from their initial exam and treatment just might be more important than anything you do in what's left of 2019.

Salmon is ok but usually not filling enough
The way to succeed at carnivore is to eat a lot of fatty meat
Some say Ribeye is ideal (too pricey for me)
At any rare you will be looking to eat at least 2 pounds of meat a day, probably more since you are a big guy and your body needs a lot nutrients to start fixing itself
The reason a lot of ppl fail to transition is because they limit their intake

Posted by: VMom's phone

Also, the verdict is out on whether any cholesterol level has any contribution to heart or artery disease, resulting in blockage or heart attacks. The study of possible side affects of taking regular statin dosages is also limited, with some saying there is no harm, and others saying there is a linkage to dementia.

Until the medical community has thought this through, best not to take statins for the rest of your life - its like putting old style food medical science in charge of your diet.

Honestly, I would not take them, certainly not long term. I am not especially convinced cholesterol levels have anything to do with cardiovascular disease anyway, that was among the first bullshit scientific studies. (Quite UN-scientific, in fact)

Your brain needs cholesterol and even though I think it makes its own version, I don't think statins differentiate.

I worked with a lot of doctors a few years ago who said they wouldn't put a rat on statins. They mess with your liver, the eventually disrupt the proteins or something or other that keep your muscles intact, and so many other problems with long term use.

334 qdpsteve:

High insulin levels can cause tingling, numbness and weakness.

Please. Get off all sugar NOW. (and starches, which cause similar spikes in insulin levels as sugar.)

Don't wait for after Christmas. The time is NOW. You will be miserable with the withdrawal symptoms for 10-14 days, because you are a sugar addict. You will have headaches, pee a LOT, maybe angry, irritable. (Ask me how I know...)

Don't fool around with your symptoms. You may want to visit an ER as someone suggested.

Watch on YT Dr. Annette Bosworth and Dr. Ken Berry. Good info on keto and carnivore.

TODAY is the best day to start. Begin with throwing away every snack cake, cracker, candy, cookie, cake, bags of sugar, icecream...you get the drift.

You. Can. Do. It.
If I can you can. I'm an old lady, and I kicked the sugar addiction this year, got rid of my reflux, joint pain, chronic sinusitis, muscle weakness, chronic fascial pain, heart palpitations, and 60 pounds of fat.

You. Can. Do. It.

348 Alcoholics tend to be thin because they take all their calories in as complex carbohydrates that need to be broken apart in the liver vs the stomach. Therefore, without food intake, which is the nature of alcoholics, you get anemia and anorexia. The liver produces insulin, needed to keep or regulate blood sugar levels appropriate for cell asperation, and increasing or decreasing this production affects the size and weight of an individual. Nutrients a slim through drinking your dinner, and allowing your liver to do the digestion is pretty inefficient for body growth and health.

Other than that, drink up!

There's a story I've heard several times. (Major company) had a persistent problem with hacking attempts from (Eastern European country where the cops don't give a shit). They spent tons of cash on attempted mitigation, with no luck.

Then one of their programmers, who happened to be from (Eastern European country) suggested sending a thousand bucks to some guys he knew back home.

Those guys went over to the hacker's apartment and broke all of his fingers. Problem solved.

agreed to this post.

I've cut out 95% of sugar, pasta, and breads. A lot less beer, too. Meats, veggies, salads.

It helps. A lot.

I also know of 2 people that joined a weight loss program, 30/10 was the name of it. IDK all the details, but they say bodies process food differently, and knowing how your body works will lead you to what foods are best specifically for you. They do some tests to figure out where you should start and what is specific to you.

They also teach you how to prepare foods that are healthy for you. Much more detailed than the WW point system.

Down side is they cost way too much, like a couple thousand for their program.

But the concept of pairing specific foods to individual needs makes a lot of sense.

Stay healthy.

Hi Willis...operate on what, exactly? Calcium or fatty buildup in the arteries have not been linked to cholesterol levels, despite the medical communities best efforts, so if a doctor recommends surgery, its due to a pre-existing condition you have discovered by examination, EWKG and a stress test, not based on any life style choice.

Again, there is no real clinical medical evidence to date that suggests that a certain food source choice causes high cholesterol, or even that high cholesterol means ipso facto you're a candidate for getting heart disease or a candidate for a heart attack.

He is not wrong, though he is a bit incomplete.

You see, he failed to mention the "tablespoon of bacon grease", into the green beans. Along with the standard size "pat of (unsalted) butter". And the bit of black pepper, and bit more amount of garlic powder.

And now your green beans are a *worthy* accompaniment to your steak.

But when I started college and earning my own money, I went absolute nuckin futs with eating fast food meals, and my soda intake probably went up about 500%.

I don't wanna say I'm addicted, but I definitely have what look, sound, taste and feel like withdrawal symptoms if I go much as three days without it. Did it to myself.

395 "I guess I REALLY need to step up my Atkins/keto game to a much more serious degree," qdpsteve

it really helped me to have a more clear idea of WHY to do the keto thing, meaning why the body is so much better off in the "fat adaptive" state, or regularly in ketosis, however it is phrased. For some reason I never really studied it when the GAINZZZ thing was all the rage here, ... but now lost 24 pounds in three months, though I mostly did it for other health reasons. My BP came way down also ... transition is not really hard, just a decision.

this one has a lot of choices ... statins are not good, but maybe necessary till the BP comes down. Same with diabetes meds ... keto can get most people off of them. over 300 would be a challenge, but there are many keto success stories.

396 > I don't drink any soda anymore.

Kidney stones got me off cola.

Lemon-lime is actually supposed to be good for them, but so is coffee, so I mostly just drink that.

It took a lengthy adaptation process to get used to drinking coffee with no sugar, but I'm used to it now.

When Little LCD was a kid, and we went through the fast food drive in, pop (soda, sodapop, Coke) was not an option when I was the driver. When we were all together as a family, the wife would order a meal, with fries and a pop. He whined at first, but then got mom to agree that water was the best option.

To this day, he always orders water instead of pop at the drive thru.

Except now he is 23, so he usually orders beer everywhere else.

Got out of Huntsville maybe a year ago after a 3 year stint for dealing and stolen credit cards. Had a job for maybe 6 months but now she's missing

I'm sure she'll be back inside soon, this time for probably 10-20

she hangs in Austin, of course

Most of those trials, and the JUPITER one in particular, were re investigated and found to be sorely lacking in defendable data. Also, 9 of 14 of the drs involved were being paid by the producers of the drug.

Doctors put a lot of trust in the drug companies. I do not. I am by no means anti pharma, I take plenty of drugs and am grateful for them.

But these trials and studies seldom last long enough to see what the long term effects are.

492 the fake sugars can be OK, certainly better than any fructose or HFCS or honey ... but it is thought even those might provoke some sort of "addictive" like response. I thought my sparkling water just had some flavor, then saw it has aspertame. Not terrible, but imo no sugar is better ... then the palate will adapt perhaps, and appreciate more subtle tastes.

If weight loss is important, and BP ... then the body will supply a lot of the fat, once it is used to using fat (fat adaptive). Someone mentioned Dr. Boz ... I listened to her a lot (saved her mother who had cancer, now saving her dad). She suggests how to work into the keto diet ...

I think the increase in pancreatic cancer is partially linked to prescription antacid use.

One of the doctors who toldme he wouldn't put a rat on statins refused to prescribe Prilosec when it first hit the market as a wonder drug for heartburn, because he said there were studies that showed strong links to pancreatic cancer. They pulled it after a few years and came out with a different version, but I see they're even pulling a lot of OTC heartburn meds off the shelf now.

Think it also has to do with diabetes epidemic, but I do believe the prescription antacids are another culprit.

539 re the casino chip heist -- That basically can't happen in today's casinos. All high denomination chips have a RFID chip in them. Stolen chips would be blacklisted and thus not redeemable.

You might get away with passing a few at a table game, but they would know about it PDQ, and they have video of everyone, facial recognition, etc.

If you're gonna rob a casino, the best bet is stealing cash. Here on the MS coast, that has happened more than once. The robbers are usually in custody within a day or two.

Too easy to demand that the entire Soros enterprise be booked onto Air Pinochet.

FAR MORE IMPORTANT that each and every employee and executive of said empire be sweated as to every detail of ongoing operations.

Drill down hard, Drill down deep, Drill down with neither mercy or remorse.

Then, when as much information as might be obtained, IS obtained.

Index, Cross Check, and then ACT.

There should not remain one living player from among the "Who's Who" of the Soros Empire.

And then let's see what the trajectory of the world becomes in the Post Soros Era.

Betcha it'll look a LOT better than it does now!

We don't have a tree (no room here), but the deck over at Publius' parents is decorated and is sort of everyone's outdoor tree. We've got a 10 pound prime rib roast in the fridge, so it's going to be a real feast over there.

Best of all is spending it with Publius and my new family and my brother, who moved down here for a new start in SC.
Many blessings, indeed!

I hear ya skip. This entire sanctuary bs has to end at some point or we no longer have a country. I have no problem reducing the Federal power to the original constitutional level. But no way the crazies are going for that. They will always claim their sanctuary cities are righteous for some reason an those of others are insurrection.

It is pretty amazing what Virginia has done in short order. At this point I would advise those in the DMV (stupid made up name that millenialls came up with) who are conservative to move to WV if they can. I mean why live in Front Royal as a sanctuary city when you can go a bit further West and be rid of the fascist lefties?. Sure take that state back, but Northern VA isn't coming back, it is gone.

For years NOVA claimed that they should be their own state, that they had nothing to do with the rest of VA. I say it is time to call them on this. Why not put NOVA back into DC as was the original design? You could throw in Montgomery County and Prince Georges County and finally make DC a State. You would get on additional blue state and two red states. Also, it wold not be extreme but pretty much what the Founders wanted with the boundaries stretched a bit. And finally the DC people could stop bitching about taxation without representation.

A question: have any of you ever seen a truck with a two-level cab? As in, below the drivers level there appears to be two rectangular windows for passengers. The truck is a two axle medium sized delivery truck with a box cargo body, International Harvester, with an IST or IS7 beneath the IH logo. You can spot it at about the 9 min mark in the Batman episode Shoot A Crooked Arrow.
