My washing machine decided to break down this past week. It couldn't have broken down on or right after black friday. Too much to ask. To top it off we'll have a ten day wait for delivery. So the mountains of laundry are slowly but steadily building.

Translation Error? I won't believe it until I see what it was translated from.
Swedish is very closely related to English, most "translation errors" between the two tend to be relatively minor things like using the wrong word order or the use of out of place, uncommon words like "glistering". I seriously doubt there could be a translation error that massive and consequential between Swedish and English.

When I bought this house it had that fakey dark brown "wood". You know, that cheap crap builders used in developments in the 70's. It was used in all the trim, the kitchen cabinets, wainscotting in the dining room, and as paneling in the family room.
So, I paid to have the inside of the house painted, including all of that dark brown "wood". Part way through the job they called me and told me they had to add to the estimate because it was going to take an extra coat to cover that chocolate brown paneling, etc.
It was well worth it.

Your instinct to give your daughter the card is a good one, I believe. She would treasure it all the more knowing he got it especially for her. Perhaps write nothing. Explain it to her in person preferably, or in a separate note if that is not possible. The blank card will convey a moving message of love and loss as no written words can possibly do.

I think any colonization of Venus that does not involve terraforming it would have to rely upon "floating cities" that somehow fly above the densest part of the atmosphere.
I wonder how many nuclear bombs it would take to blow 4/5 of Venus' atmosphere off into space?

for 2 1/2 years I unloaded trucks and hauled product for Walmart. It kept me active, the company was one of the better ones I ever worked for, and best of all, I DID NOT FEEL LIKE SOME KIND OF USELESS POS!!!!
Like you, I get really het up about Walmart being the problem. the individual store will reflect the clientele that was already there.

Okay you two. Here's a tale I can't remember the title of, or the author:
A robot and a guy are trapped together in some sort of small enclosure/capsule and the robot goes has a breakdown and goes berserk. It is attacking anything that moves (literally) so, every time our intrepid hero moves the robot beats the snot out of him. Finally our guy uses a flashlight or laser to illuminate the robot's control box on the wall and the robot smashes it to bits basically killing himself.

I don't mind Walmart, if it wasn't for them I'd have to drive a bit further and pay more for some household items. My only complaint would be, when they first started growing they were made In USA, now not so much. Here, the also built a heck of a lean to shed for the Amish to park there buggies, water and hay available.

There's a Wally-Mart food market near stately Casa Backwardio that I'm in at least once a week. Some employees have been there for several years, which I consider a good sign at any bidness. Was also in the new one up the road. Very clean and well stocked.

Its just that its the most common store out there. And well you're eventually going to get places and times where the less savory or polite customers show up. It probably was an error of cultural mistranslation. In Sweden everyone expects to put the leaders against the wall because that is the proper flow of Socialist throught, and all the politicians are busy trying to make sure they are trying to get ahead and lead that parade to try to make sure they aren't "it" so the whole concept is sort of unreal.
Of course in the US, where punishments are something other than "maximum of 20 years and you aren't allowed chocolate pudding for dinner" death threats are understood a bit differently.

A very wealthy middle eastern businessman is in New York securing a very important deal when he is taken seriously ill and needs a blood transfusion.

If you run it like an aerostat or a kite, you could use a weighted cable of some sort (beanstalk like cable dipping down into the denser layers) with a drogue on the end to act as a storm anchor to keep it both oriented and stable. It would not be in contact with the ground so would not be a risk in fouling. I believe you could also alter the length to modify your travel. I wonder if it would cut enough magnetic fields to act as a current generator, or if it would be possible to place some sort of spinning rotor on the end to generate additional current.

Yup, never really been in a Walmart until I got roped into going with a
few friends this past year. Hundreds of not-quite-right customers the
article says. Thats putting it mildly, it was a frigging freak show. I
didn't even get in the place and there was a chick giving the finger to
the employee working the door, and while that was happening 2 thug
looking mofos went running past the other person working the door while
carrying some kind of bag. They basically said screw you. I get inside,
see all the weirdos, spent about 30 minutes there, come out and there's

L. Neil Smith wrote a book where the final act was where a group of Asteroid Belters hit Venus with a hypervelocity lump of rock; only they weren't trying to blow the atmosphere off, they were looking to break it into another asteroid belt to settle.
I had a plot where there were these giant factory ships that picked up raw material at the Asteroid belt from the Belters, and ran a profoundly elliptical orbit around the Sun that took it within the orbit of Venus to allow both higher solar energy for working ore into rough and finished castings, and to allow loading of CO2 from Venus' atmosphere as well as to capture protons from the solar wind close in where they were denser, to convert the CO2 into H2O for sale, along with the finished products, at the Asteroid belt.

A local group has restored the main observation bunker, and it's open most weekends. They even have a real, pristine sound-powered phone donated by a collector - but nobody to call on it, of course. There are hopes to restore other elements of the system, though apparently an earlier plan to get the searchlight on the bay side working again may not work out.
The old [concrete blockhouse] radio shack is close to the historic lighthouse and has a remarkably good, very small exhibit on the Pt Loma [Fort Rosecrans] and other harbor defenses and also the panic of '42 [sub attack near Goleta and the "battle of Los Angeles" air defense scare.
The last bunkers of the southern-most battery, down near the Mexican border below the SEAL HQ, was taken out not that long ago to make room for the new SEAL range and training facility. The stuff in La Jolla and Del Mar was taken out not long after the war.

A worse name was never invented (in fact, the guy who came up with the term "imaginary numbers" called them that to deride them).
An "imaginary number" is just a distance along a different axis. It's as "real" as any other number (not at all, other words... all numbers are just mental concepts).
Think about a x-y plane (or, to make it even more concrete, a street grid).
Giving directions to get from one place to another on this grid requires two numbers ("three blocks east, one block north"), yes?
For (fundamentally idiotic, as noted above) reasons, one of these numbers is called "real", and the other "imaginary".
Instead of "3 east, 1 north", the mathematicians would write 3 + 1i. The i just signifies that it's in the y direction rather than the x.
And that's basically all there is to "imaginary numbers". There are algebra rules for combining them so that the shit works out right, but if you think of them in "street grid" terms, those rules make perfect sense.
In three dimensions you have three axes, so math in 3D often uses i, j, and k notation rather than "regular number + other number times i", but the basic idea is exactly the same. Confusingly, the convention there is to use i for the distance along the x axis (rather than y), j for the y axis, and k for the z axis. These can also be written as "unit vectors", where i = [1,0,0], j=[0,1,0] and k=[0,0,1], where the numbers represent the distance along the x, y, and z axes respectively. This is very handy for combining them using the rules of matrix manipulations (which computers are wizard at).
The other common notation uses a radius from the center and an angle ("3 km at an angle of 75 degrees") which is more convenient for some jobs (for instance, if you're flying, or aiming an artillery piece, rather than walking along the street grid), but the two are equivalent and can easily be converted back and forth.

Kind of the opposite, really. Absolute value ignores "direction" entirely.
I can say I'm 3 km from the center location. That's an absolute value, but doesn't really tell me exactly where. The only thing it tells me is that I'm somewhere on a circle with radius 3km from the center (the "origin", as math people call it).
I can say I'm 3 km east of the center. That's 3 + 0i (3 in the x direction, 0 in the y).
I can I'm 3 km north of the center. That would be 0 + 3i (0 x, 3 y).
I can say I'm 3 km west of the center (-3 + 0i, or -3 x, 0 y) or 3 km south (0 -3i, or 0 x, -3y).
What about 3 km northeast, or some other direction? Well, there you have to apply some trigonometry.
The takeaway idea is that to specify a position on a plane, you need two numbers. One number to specify the east-west position (called "real", for stupid reasons) and one number to specify the north-south position (called "imaginary", for equally stupid reasons).

I hate math with the heat of 1000 suns. I have to use more than I like to, but its mostly reading micrometers, calculating clearances, or basic formulas for balancing engines.

An old boss, who was much better at math than I am, once wondered out loud why I was the programmer and she was the manager, since I need a calculator to figure sales tax (but speak a couple of languages), while she's an absolute math rockstar but only knows English.

I have a lot more trouble remembering things today than I did 10, 20, 30 years ago.
The term I use is that when you're very young, your brain is naturally "sticky." You hear things, you learn things, and they STICK in your brain. You remember them. And when you're younger, it seems that much more things about life, the universe and everything, are much more interesting.
But as you grow older, you get bored with things, life loses its luster a bit, and your brain becomes less sticky. To the point that you have to make yourself interested in things sometimes, to keep your brain sticky. You also have to rely on memory 'crutches,' as it were, like writing things down on post-its, putting them in easy-to-find places, etc.
I would give anything to have a brain as 'sticky' again, as I did when I was 15 years old. I can remember tons of movies, rock bands and songs, and all sorts of TV trivia (who played Schneider on One Day At A Time? Pat Harrington) and junk like that, but I have difficulty remembering passwords I use often online.

Friend of mine from a local cigar store, recently retired from NASA as the Orbital Dynamics Engineer on the ISS program.
Not only did he bear responsibility for "shaping" the ISS's orbit, but also for de-conflicting with thousands of other bits of space-borne hardware, mostly "junk" cast off from hundreds of previous launches.
Suffice to say, he understands "math" in a way you n' I never will even remotely comprehend.
But at least I did gain traction with him when in conversation, it became apparent that I knew what an Apogee and Perigee were in Orbital terms, along with several other nerd-points such as we often discuss here in the ONT.
The cigar world is every bit as powerful as he shooty world, as to providing introductions to many people you'd otherwise not come to know.
Applies to the motorcycle world, too.
And in my experience, even to my detriment. Those are all greater-than the sailing world, which does tend to self-select for snobs, elitists and look-down-on-their-lessers wanna-bees.

Rodrigo's post about complex numbers made me try to remember something. I think it's impossible to get a full algebra (however that is precisely defined) for 3D, that is triple of numbers.
Hamilton was trying to do that, IIRC, and in what he described as a spark of inspiration, realized he need 4 dimensions, 4 numbers. That was what he called the quaternions.
The next level up is ocotonions, eight dimensions, although there are a bunch of others in four dimensions.
There is the spacetime alegrba that gives a quaternion like system, but with this properties of Minkowski space 4-vectors (1 time like, 3 spacelike). I remember playing with that latter, but I've forgotten it.

Anyway, you know how Trump was in Russia's pocket while acting as that country's foreign agent? And then he committed campaign finance violations? And Bribery? And Treason? And rape? And gross incompetence and insanity?
The charges are Abuse of Power (ISTN, and delivered with neither shame nor a sense of irony) and Obstruction of Congress (which may mean trouble for you or me but I don't think can fly against a coequal branch of the government).
This is a worse story than the last season of Battlestar Galactica.

I hear ya. I've been up since 4. Went to bed at 9 and fell asleep watching Green Acres. Woke up at midnight with my glasses still on and tv all lit up. The great thing about Sunday is that I can go back to bed if I want!
