Saturday Morning Coffee Break

Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-8.png

***

Happy Saturday you Morons! Let us review a few stories that didn't get too much and/or any attention here at the AoSHQ this past week. Just remember, no running with sharp objects, the 'ettes don't have cooties and play nice with one another.

  • The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe.

  • We have mosquito issues where I live, but no thank you.

  • Bear spray doesn't belong in an oven.

  • Some people are just dicks.

  • Crazy and jealous, a deadly combination.

  • Who says cops don't have a soft spot?

  • Alligator the undertaker.

  • Naughty Limey.

  • Planning a trip to San Francisco? Here's a map for you.

  • Michael Avenatti's next client?

Hey enjoy these stories or something else that tickles your fancy this morning. Enjoy the open thread.

    Have a great weekend!!!

Set your watch - hahaha. Another anachronistic phrase. We don't wear watches and our cells set themcelves.

We were driving along the other night, and as I fumbled with the compound lights on/off/dim/bright thing on the stick on the column, Milady said she kinda missed the automobile dimmer switch you stomped on with your left foot.

    I said, "Okay, Boomer."

In the movie "Richard Jewell", Jewell is asked by his lawyer to show him how many firearms he has before the FBI learns about it. He has some hunting rifles and handguns, which surprises the lawyer. My mom leaned over to me and said "Southerner! Big deal!" (she's from Arkansas and they hunted for food).

    -----------------

I've been waiting for the answer to this question since Trump said he was spied on. Seems to be the only answer the country will need to make up its mind about everything.

Mind you, it wouldn't be all Trump's rivals. Just the "outsiders" who couldn't be controlled. No need to surveil Heb. So keep an eye on who WASN'T on that list. For example, Ted Cruz?

42 I believe a large part of our obesity epidemic stems from modern automobiles. They're just too easy to drive compared to older ones that had manual trannys, windows you rolled up with your hand, and that high-beam stomper-button thingy. And vent windows. Those were nice. And radio antennas that you had to pull up by hand (AM band only, thank you). They were like an exercise machine that could go 100 mph.

This all comes down to who the EU hates more.

Scotland is a burden on the UK. It's entirely reliant on welfare. If it leaves the UK, it would expect to get the EU to pick up the tab.

The EU might be willing to do this because it would piss off the Brits.

Problem: Spain also has a secessionist movement. If the EU greenlights Scotland, Catalonia will become even more violent.

This in turn may cause other regions to attempt national break-ups. Maybe Bavaria or some of France's rural provinces? Northern Italty is tired of dealing with Rome's dysfunction as well. Belgium is bitterly divided and could easily break into two countries. The only reason it was kept together in the first place was to act as a buffer between France and Prussia/Germany.

If the EU says "No, absolutely not," that will pretty much stop it from happening. I think the ability of members to veto things will also play a factor. France, Spain and Italy would all line up and say "hell no" to Scottish EU membership.

91 Headlight wiring was long and circuitous (heh), the floor switch dimmer added to this problem. Headlights didn't have fuses in the wiring for safety reasons, rather the switch itself had a thermal breaker. Corrosion would cause the headlights to flicker on and off, a bit disconcerting at night. Does tend to increase alertness on the part of the driver.

Headlight Relays fixed the problem, but I do like a floor switch for dimming headlights.

Pretty obvious the Left only needed eight years after Obama to turn us into their commie paradise and put the world at their feet. It was all going so well. They had their secret courts, surveillance state, controlled politicians, bureaucratic behemoth, big tech censorship, blowjob media, civilian security force street beaters, amped up police forces, "new world order" with China Russia Iraq NK as the big dogs to keep every other country in line, etc.

In 2024, they would have installed someone to stage manage the rest, including the happy fun camps. Fuckers were *this* close. Lot of people have become aware of what they are since then.

    Disagree.

A GOPer who votes to convict is a walking corpse, and everyone knows it. That's why they keep hinting that if there was a *secret ballot* Trump would go down.

Well, duh. If you can do things without consequence, a lot of crazy crap will happen.

This is like Kavanaugh on steroids - the media and GOPe traitors want you to think Trump's fate hangs by a thread when it doesn't.

Besides, what possible gain would those GOP senators gain from casting a pointless vote like that? It's like being down 49-7 in the 4th quarter and using your starting quarterback on a scramble so you lose him for the season.

Making this even dumber is that we know Democrat senators are likely to vote to acquit. Manchin and Sinema are flirting with this, so it'll be "bipartisan" both ways.

    ---------------------------------------

Because they aren't "moderates". Most of the dummies who get elected to these offices are recruited by others, party regulars who look for candidates they can run who can fool the voters.

They have no principles at all, other than fooling the voters and doing what they are told to do by their real bosses, the party bosses.

So if they are told to vote a certain way, they do it. They lose their seat, oh well, the party will find them a nice ghost payroller job in some unit of government somewhere. If they vote against their party bosses' wishes, they will be primaried by their own party, lose their seat anyway, and be unemployable.

    Why or why not?

If someone is prohibited from voting, do you want them to own a gun?

And if someone is probited from owning a gun

Do you want them voting? Voting is way more dangerous than firearms. If you hadn't noticed.

215 One could certainly argue that I'm being unforgiving via a vis restoration simply because the likely political outcome is in opposition to my preference, hence my argument is self-serving. OTOH, one could counter that it is precisely that same argument that warrants no restoration. 233 "If the law does not specify permanent loss of voting rights, why would they not be restored at the completion of a felon's sentence"

One problem is the conflation of "paying one debt to society" with merely sucking up three hots and a cot on the taxpayer dime.

One idiot with a stolen car can do hundreds of thousands of dollars damage to public utilities, private property and never pay a dime in restitutuon to property owners or the taxpayer. And no insurance, natch.

As an aside I read the police blotter frequently. I see lots and lots of DUI, driving while license suspended, driving while license revoked, driving while barred, etc.

In about 99% of the arrest records, I never see them charged with an additional "driving without insurance", it strains credulity to believe that anyone is scrupulously maintaining their liability policy while driving without a license or registration. Further, I believe the insurance co. automatically yanks the policy anyway.

The only time I see the no insurance charge applied appears to be when actual property damage occurs, say hitting a parked car. Given the po-po predilection for charging as many offenses as possible, the dearth of "no insurance" tickets is puzzling. There is a reason for it, but I'm at a loss to explain why.

    Its racist.

Illegal aliens can't buy insurance, even if they could, their culture doesn't value insurance.

Using r/K strategy thinking, or Ice People vs Sun People, however you want to call it, generally speaking there are cultures and tribes that can process abstracts such as "preparing for future events". These are Ice People , who when it is time to buy nails, buys a box of them so that there will be nails for some future unspecified project where Sun People buy (or steal) only enough nails for the job at hand.

Ice People know the value of insurance, as it is also a way to protect your wealth. Sun People don't feel a need to protect the few things they own, don't feel any financial responsibility to others, and consider themselves bullet-proof.

They don't have insurance because they don't see a need for it, and these cultures wear a certain uniform of skin that makes criticizing the culture the same as criticizing the skin - which is "racism".

The bar to open a counterintelligence investigation is very low. The bar to get a FISA, particularly on an American citizen, is not.

That's what makes this whole thing much worse. They actively went out of their way to lie numerous times to the FISC using fake information that they claimed was verified

The implication in a FISA warrant is that you have proof that the target is in the employee of a foreign government. A spy. They knew from day 1 Page wasn't a spy for Russia because he was a spy for the US. They lied.

    Oh Boy! Theology Time!

    Two Kingdom Model.

Redemption of Sin is to satisfy the demands of a Holy God for transgressing His Law. Transgression of any of the Law is the same as against all of the Law, such that the penalty is not only temporal death, but spiritual death. The Cross brings the repentant sinner back to spiritual life.

I'm not sure of any secular court that can do that.

Also, while stealing is a crime against God and Man, the penalty of that crime with God is spiritual in nature, and as Paul writes in Romans 13, the government bears the sword to administer temporal judgment on the thief.

Two wildly different courts, two profoundly different domains.

About 5 y ears ago Paraguay's national legislature passed a law making it mandatory for drivers to carry auto insurance. Up to that time it was optional.

There was a huge cry about it and it was determined by the nation's supreme court that under their constitution the national legislature did not have the power to mandate purchase of insurance and declared the law to be invalid.

This caused a huge cry from the people who opted early to get insurance and they took that through the courts as well, to which the courts basically told them, " please explain how you were harmed in voluntarily buying insurance"

I don't believe governments can mandate purchase of anything. Forcing citizens under their control to buy insurance, or seatbelts, or even pictures of their leader that they must display prominently lest anyone forget who is their master, is a violation of basic rights and freedom.

It is as bad as the company town forcing everyone to buy their groceries at their price with their script, or your boss requiring you to buy your tools to work from the company store at their mandated prices.

Insurance originally was a way to protect the driver himself against damage and injury, and in a way to protect himself from being sued for claims of damage against others.
What it is now is a mandated bond to allow driving privileges, and creates a secondary crime out of government fiat. It is used to protect other people who don't comply with the law.

I do not like my chains.

407 I don't believe governments can mandate purchase of anything. Forcing citizens under their control to buy insurance...

In principle I would agree with you.

In the case of states like Michigan that had or still have a form of "No Fault Insurance", I understood it to mean that it didn't matter who caused the wreck, each party had to deal with their own transportation. I'm not sure how that works with damaging other property like smashing into homes, maiming people or taking out stretches of guard rail.

The reality is, we keep uninsured/underinsured insurance because a $130k Mercedes Benz GLS-63 is over the ability to pay of most drivers on the road.

In states like Texas, the mandate is not to necessarily buy insurance, but to prove that you have Financial Responsibility to certain dollar amounts in the event that you cause injury or damage.

There are ways to do that such as show letters of credit for that dollar amount, or have that money in escrow.

Society has decided that we want people responsible for the damage they do, this is why so many people are against illegal aliens operating motor vehicles - because they do not have an desire or ability to take responsibility for any injury or damage they do.

Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at December 14, 2019 11:26 AM (lD3vL)

408 SCOTUS and case law amply provides that our government cannot compel citizens to purchase anything. That is why Democrat's in Congress structured the ACA as they did. They attempted to somewhat argue that case in NFIb v Sebelius , but even Roberts shot that part down. But he did turn it into a "tax" which is perhaps one of the worst written pieces of exploitable jurisprudence in our history.

I've been hearing this construct a lot, and I get where it comes from, but freedom is not the same as liberty. "Nothing left to lose" includes the loss of any meaningful human relationships, Nothing-left-to-lose freedom is destructive and self-centered, "I no longer give a shit".

Liberty on the other hand is aspirational and best when shared with someone. Liberty is the freedom to stand on your convictions amongst other people, and has an element of risk involved, i.e. loss of that liberty.

417 Mr. April bought a new truck recently. We just realized last week it has automatic brights. They brighten automatically, and dim automatically depending on how far ahead it sees taillights or opposing headlights. Huh.
Posted by: April at December 14, 2019 10:01 AM (OX9vb)

That was a feature on Cadillacs at least as early as 1955. I had a '56 once, and it had it. The photocell, mounted in a streamlined pod on top of the dash, could only sense oncoming headlights, though. No tail lights.

I would want to be sure that any car I own had a manual override for the automatic dimmers, though.

418 I am fine with restoring rights after the entire debt is paid. You serve
your sentence and complete parole without re-offending. Then, you can
    vote.
    =====

+five years after completion of all paroles. Upon affirmative petition, then voting rights should be restored. I don't think life sentences for felonies unless specifically violent should be a bar to restoration of voting rights.

Specifically violent felonies are probably a different category altogether.

Society has decided that we want people
responsible for the damage they do, this is why so many people are
against illegal aliens operating motor vehicles - because they do not
have an desire or ability to take responsibility for any injury or
    damage they do.

Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at December 14, 2019 11:26 AM (lD3vL)

I would expect that it is not actually "society" (which, to pointedly ask, where is Society's address, its supporters and its shoe size?) that supports the drive for universal insurance are politicians who are buying votes using other people's (read: your) money, by protecting the voters from a designated enemy (read: uninsured people they can't sue for damages) and insurance companies that see a huge increase in volume and a broad socialization of their own financial risk.

If you want to protect yourself buy your own damned insurance. If you want to buy insurance for illegals who can't drive do it directly (but I know you are against it because you said you hated doing that)

BUT YOU ARE ADVOCATING MY EXTORTION TO MAKE YOUR LIFE MORE COMFORTABLE IN THE NAME OF FAIRNESS.

Please don't be so superior while advocating my robbery to make your life more convenient.

423 I helped a friend move a disabled car. He got in front with another car so we could safely coast it down a hill, using the other car as a brake if need be. Cop pulls up due to no lights on the disabled car, and the ticket (from a new guy) included "coasting in neutral". Had to look up that one,and sure enough, it was on the books.
Posted by: bill in arkansas at December 14, 2019 11:11 AM (C1Lsn)

Willowed, I know, but that "offense" is on the books in a lot of jurisdictions, especially where hills are commonplace. Goes back about a century, now, but it used to be a thing to "save gas" by coasting downhill in neutral, even shutting down the engine. Truckers called it "Georgia Overdrive". Thing is, one no longer has engine braking available, and the vehicle's brakes (especially back in the day) were not necessarily up to the task of maintaining safe speed on a long downgrade, or making an emergency stop in such conditions. It was truly an unsafe mode of operation.

Speaking to your instance, though, it was a bullshit charge. A smart cop would have just said, "get that broke-down car onto the shoulder, and call a wrecker now."

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 14, 2019 12:19 PM (Ol3ZL)

424 @356 "Yeah, we are at the point that driving over the speed-limit in a school zone will score you several crimes:

    1) speeding
    2) enhanced speeding (because school or construction zone)
    3) reckless driving
    4) endangerment to a child
    5) failure to observe traffic signs
    "

And don't tell me that those "safe driving discounts" based on your car narcing on you aren't a pilot program for something that will, someday soon, be imposed by mandate.
