Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Good afternoon Morons and Lurkers. Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Why not take a break from what's going on and enjoy the world of Pets.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Tucker Carlson is right. Buzzfeed is a cat website. And here is a H/T from Jane D'Oh to prove it. Good cats.

***

From our friend and regular commenter, Shibumi, several entertaining links:

Spiderman and cats, go hand in hand.

Cute. Maine Coon kittens.

Kind human helps out cats when winter rolls around.

This is what Shibumi told me when she sent in her email, "Yes, I am goofing off."

Happy to hear you think of AoS Pet Thread when you are goofing off.

20191118 Jamocha with hedgehog toy.jpg

Hi MisHum,

This is Jamocha, one of a pair of 16-year-old sibling domestic shorthair rescues who've provided us much joy over the past 13 years, a few days before we had to have him euthanized.

For years now he'd had a daily morning routine of patiently waiting to fetch a stuffed toy hedgehog strategically-thrown -- preferably out-of-sight like onto or behind furniture. He'd find and shake it violently in his mouth, crying loudly and then delivering its carcass to a myriad of locations in true mouser fashion (I believe they're cousins to the Maine Coons) -- not relenting with the wails, and making them even more nuanced and intense over time (guaranteed to elicit chucklees), until one of us arrived to acknowledge and praise his accomplishment. And then the cycle would start again, over and over; I would joke that he was wearing ME out.

We could tell he wasn't feeling good recently and had lost interest in it, so sprayed the toy with liquid catnip to induce him to play. He just laid down on it like a pillow, and thus the photo opportunity. After taking him to the vet soon after, his body just kept deteriorating with multiple organs failing and unable to keep a stable red blood cell count -- even after having a transfusion.

Both he and his sister Jamaica have had chronic kidney disease for a few years. With my wife fortunately retired, she's been able to give them the nursing care needed (subcutaneous fluids, medications, supplements, etc. sometimes multiple times/day). Having been her daily companion for 16 years, his sister is clearly confused about his absence and her odd, skittish behavior indicates that she's grieving along with us (we'd read where companion pets can grieve for the loss of another for up to six months).

Being a reader of the Pet Thread for over three years had, in addition to bringing me much joy, prepared me psychologically for the decision to euthanize him and experience the grieving process in a positive manner -- so thank you all for that. -- ShainS

Hi ShainS, I'm glad you could have as many years with Jamocha as you did. As most of us here can attest to, one of the hardest things to do in life is to say "goodbye" to your pet. Condolences on your loss.

Long-time lurker here – love the pet thread. This is our four-year-old Dotty – before and after. She was rescued from the streets of SoCal and has settled in Oregon. Cute as a button and a joy to have around. Thanks for all you do. Sincerely. -unsigned Lurker

First of all, no need to thank me. It's folks like you that makes this thread happen. What a fantastic story about Dotty. Thank you for sharing with us and stepping out of the Lurker shadows.

Hi there--

Lurker for a few months, so much so I don't even have a screen name. Call me Roxy. This is Dusty, my who-knows-what-type-terrier-and-maybe-some-cocker best friend. He was a great dog. In his younger days he loved walks that led to picnic tables to sniff, and trying (and succeeding sometimes, with that jump) to get on the kitchen table to steal rump roasts. So smart I couldn't keep him in treat dispensing puzzle toys. In his later years he patiently put up with our new baby through her headbutting stage, and got lots of daily scratchies. Here he is doing some of his favorite activities.

It's been a month and I still miss him. A Jesuit once tried to argue with me that dogs have no souls. Bull. If God is infinite everything--infinite power, infinite wisdom, infinite love--then he has room in heaven for all his creations, most especially dogs. Anything that can love that purely and deeply has a soul. If he's not waiting for me when I hit those gates, then God and I are going to have words.

Okay, so maybe call me Karen.

Thanks for coming by the AoS Pet Thread. Dusty certainly gave you and your family joy. And as far as God and words, I'll be there right next to you.

Hi MisHum:

This is Charlie. It’s his first winter, so when it snowed recently I asked Charlie to come out and help me shovel the deck. So, he put his sweater on and came out, and was no help at all. Turns out, Charlie likes to eat snow, not actually shovel it.

By the way, we shaved him last summer and found a little dog under all that hair…no, really. - Boswell

Hey Boswell, how did you get Charlie to help? I sure could use some help from my K9s to help out with the snow removal here. Great looking dog. Thanks for sharing with us.

Season's Greetings!

Here is our polydactyl Siamese mix, Sterling, from 2017. Sterling was
abandoned in our neighborhood in 2004, and we decided to take her in.
We were unsure of her age, but our vet thought she was probably 2-3
years old at that time. She was the sweetest cat and very tolerant of
being dressed up in seasonal garb (although you probably wouldn't think
that from the look on her face here). Sadly, she developed kidney
disease and we had to make the tough decision about euthanasia a couple
days before Thanksgiving 2018. I miss her every day.

--Longtime lurker JenWestin

I'm impressed, a cat sat long enough to be dressed up for a Christmas shot. Cool!!! Jen so sorry she is no longer with you. It sounds like she ended up in a wonderful home. Thank you for sharing with us today.

43 I am so in love with Bruno. What a face. I do have a comment about him though that I beg you, please please please to take as a well-intended observation NOT a criticism. We adopted a young male yellow lab from a shelter about 20 years ago. He came with the name Bruno. We intended to keep the name. But when we went with him to training class the instructor suggested that unless we never planned to use the word "no" in correcting him (or the children) we might want to consider changing his name so as not to confuse him. We thought about it--thought it made some sense- and decided to half-rename him to become Bruin. He was a wonderful member of the family for almost 10 years. I hope you have the same joy from adopting this boy.

50 One night, years ago, I went to bed a happy woman, only to discover the next morning that #1 son had moved back home in the middle of the night, bringing two half grown cats, Sam and Ella (say it fast and you'll get the joke, keeping in mind said son was working as a mid-level chef at the time), with him. When I threw said son out of the house a year later, I kept the cats because I didn't feel like driving halfway across town to feed them and clean kitty litter. Since I already had two cats and dogs, I took Sammy and Ella down to the bookstore where they upstaged every author who did a signing at my store and generally raised Hell for better than thirteen years. Sammy went first, a blood clot that paralyzed his hind end that could not be fixed. For the next five months, Ella made my life a living Hell grieving for her brother. I was sad when she got sick and went to join her brother, but I also considered it a mercy for her. You simply cannot explain to a broken hearted cat why after being one of two for over fifteen years, she is suddenly one of one.

51 Captain Josepha Sabin, thank you for your beautiful story. Dogs seem to have a different concept of death, and often grieve long and loudly. Cats do not like change and I believe that explains their grieving process. Having experienced both cat and dog grieving, the cat behavior is far more mysterious to me.

So glad you adopted them as your own. They loved and were loved, which is a treasure.

54 For years and years MIL would make a Christmas stocking for each new dog or cat that entered the family. (Nothing fancy, just a red felt stocking with a white top. She glued glitter to spell out the pet's name.) Of course we kept them all in our Christmas stash even after the pet no longer required a stocking to be hung. It's always so bittersweet to open that box and see all the stockings while remembering Christmases with each one--where we lived and when in our lives that pet was a part.

62 the cat behavior is far more mysterious to me.

Cats that have bonded to another cat do grieve when their companion dies. I've had several cats down the years who formed close bonds; usually the surviving cat would walk around the place, looking for its friend's cat bed or any other location where the departed cat slept. It would sniff for its friend's scent, sleep there, and call for its friend. Another mark of cat grieving is giving their human the feline death stare; I think house cats assume that if one of their number isn't answering roll call, the human had something to do with the disappearance.

I use a sharp "EH!" sometimes followed by a clear "NO" if it needs emphasis. He already gets that. It has worked with all the GSDs I've used that technique with. It also works on our crazy dog Scout, who has been on the pet thread a couple of times.

84 I have had a cat poke me to remind me like that.

I have also had a drink from the squirt bottle cat. I adopted him to pair up with a 15 year old cat as a kitten and sometimes he got too wild for her. When I tried squirting him he decided he liked it and for the 17 years of his life I would have to squirt him in the mouth as a treat every so often.

94 our twenty-pound Godknowswhat little bulldog who's a perpetual motion machine got caught between our two side-yard gates this AM (it's kind of a mantrap arrangement, we've got some storage in there) and proceeded to dig herself under the fence and out into the driveway, then sit there barking and whining trying to figure out how to get back IN to the yard.

So I am now sitting here typing instead of (a) fixing the inner gate latch so that neither rain nor wind nor gloom of night will permit her to get past the inner gate and (b) filling the hole she dug. Both of those things need to be done in the next hour.

But you have to admire her initiative, and the fact that she didn't disappear across town or forever.

96 Six Pound Kitty (Bonnie), is on my lap and having absolutely INSANE affection attacks on my hands.

This would be due to my recent de-boning of a couple pounds of cooled-off chicken, that I'd just simmered in the pot for four hours.

Doesn't matter how much I wash my hands with Dawn, she's still going to detect all that chicken fat that worked it's way into my skin.

She goes nuts. It's like my hands are made out of the purest catnip.

Goofy kitty. How can you not love a six-pound bundle of goof and long black fur?

Ten years old, and she still has a very kitten-y cuteness, too.

Smart, sneaky and fast. You've gotta watch for her at the front door, EVERY time.

One of our cats went crazy for plastic bags in a similar manner. I did an interwebs search to see if this was common, and apparently it does occur with some cats. I think there's maybe some animal (cow?) fat that may be used in the manufacture of plastic bags or something. Definitely made me laugh each time, but wouldn't leave the cat alone until it lost interest out of fear of accidentally managing to suffocate itself.

109 I said this Prayer to St Francis for many weeks while Lucy was ill. There is no doubt animals have souls. Please read to the end.

aint Francis of Assisi, for our Animal Friends

Heavenly Father, our human ties with our friends of other species is wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. They have trust in us as we have in You; our souls and theirs are on this earth together to give one another friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and fill Your ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have.

(Here mention the names of the animals needing prayer).

Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. From our souls to theirs goodness flows, touching each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant to our special animal companions long and healthy lives. Give them good relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us, but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Give him the power to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in giving You honor forever. Amen.

(You can make this a Novena for a sick pet, by praying this prayer for 9 consecutive days

That's an interesting observation I had not considered. Our cat Robinson goes after the clear plastic or cellophane windows on envelopes. He drags the envelopes out of the recycling bin and chews and rips and crunches the plastic part. If the envelope is just paper he has no interest whatsoever.
