California, America's version of the Land of Milk and Honey, is comparable to the Republic of Congo.

Middle class voters have been the bedrock of American democracy since the country was founded. It really has to be that way. If this isn't a middle class country, it can’t be a functioning democracy. But in California, which is at the leading edge of everything, middle class is vanishing. California's medium home price is twice the national average. It's got the country’s highest gas prices, it has some of the highest taxes as well. The results of all of this? You know what it is. The middle class is fleeing California. The ones staying are falling into the poverty. The state has the highest poverty rate in the United States. California’s Gini coefficient, a measure of inequality is identical to that in the republic of Congo. Literally.”

Homelessness is a problem in California. Of course the only fault is supply and demand capitalism. It is refreshing to hear Ronald Reagan blamed instead of "Orange Man" Bad.

To blame this all on California or Californians is lazy and wrong. The U.S. once had a national, federally funded safety net. Ronald Reagan took care of that, and it will take a president who is not craven and who can admit the obvious and maybe even withstand predictable whining from red-staters who don’t have a homeless crisis to restore it. (We do not have such a president.) But homelessness is particularly bad in California because housing prices are particularly bad in California. They are bad because of a lack of supply, yes, due to restrictive growth and zoning laws, but also distortions in demand. If nobody could afford to pay $1 million for a 950-square-foot bungalow in Palo Alto, nobody would. Since there are a precious few drunk on Silicon Valley treasure who can, they do—and anyone making real-person money is faced with a choice: fleeing the state, or living in an RV.

Of course there is no mention of illegal immigrants. Just a short 8 years ago they made up 7% of California's population.

Unauthorized immigrants make up 7 percent of California’s total population. But little is known about exactly where they live. This report presents the first authoritative estimates of this group within the state’s regions and counties. It shows the unauthorized living in all parts of California, with Shasta County housing the smallest share and the Monterey/San Benito County region the largest.
This report was supported with funding from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

Not content to allow millions of illegal immigrants to populate their state, State and local officials have allowed their streets to be inhabited by mentally ill and addicted individuals.

The Times, however, found that about 67% had either a mental illness or a substance abuse disorder. Individually, substance abuse affects 46% of those living on the streets — more than three times the rate previously reported — and mental illness, including post-traumatic stress disorder, affects 51% of those living on the streets, according to the analysis.

California is a beautiful state. The weather is splendid. However, you could never pay me enough to move there.

Something happened recently between California and the EPA. Apparently California had submitted a "plan" a while back to clean up some stuff (air quality issues, iirc). And the EPA had quietly ignored said plan, because everyone knew that the plan in question wouldn't pass muster with the EPA.

Apparently a month or two ago, the EPA decided that it was time to stop ignoring that plan.

Donaldson, a 1975 Supreme Court decision that followed a lot of agitation by leftist mental health types (yeah, I'm looking at you, Ken Kesey) advocating for "care in the community." (Remember that phrase?) Now that they've seen how "care in the community" has worked out, they want to lay the blame on Reagan or other conservatives.

I just got back from a work weekend in southern California. The idea that all of California is an uninhabitable shithole is insane, and we would be crazy to cede it to the libs if we can avoid it (although maybe we can't avoid it.) Santa Barbara is possibly the most pleasant and beautiful place in the country. I saw a few homeless people, but no camps. Clean and safe streets. Great restaurants and coffee shops. The Pacific coast from SB to LA is magical.

There is a reason the real estate prices are so high: People are willing to pay a ton in terms of real estate prices and income taxes to live there. The weather and land are near perfect! If/when I have enough money, I would seriously consider living there. No reason to let the libs chase us away.

He's a great guy, very knowledgeable on a variety of subjects, raised in the midwest, educated at Purdue, very politically and economically conservative, gun owner, but lives and works in the Bay Area because he could not come close to getting comparable work and salary closer to home. He hates Cali politics but is an outdoor guy --so loves the climate for year-round sailing, biking, hiking and the proximity of mountains for climbing and skiing. Hopefully Boudin will get voted back out of office at the end of his term, and his replacement will be more reasonable (which isn't saying much in San Francisco).

Something to remember is that Boudin only got about a third of the vote, and won by a pretty narrow margin. His first term will be pretty bad. But it might not take all that much to get him out of office the next time he's up for election.

Amusingly, the man who Gavin Newsome appointed to the job when Senator Harris went to DC was a guy named Gascon. He ended up resigning from the job, citing his mother's health. Then last month, he announced that he was running for the office of LA County DA. A week ago, SF's mayor and city attorney both endorsed our current incumbent, DA Jackie Lacey.

Interesting part about the amount of illegals living in Monterey and San Benito counties. There are plenty of neighborhoods of single-family homes where there are so many cars parked on the street that you can barely navigate them. There's also a lot of crime and poverty.

It was nice living so close to Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach and Big Sur. But once you reach your prime earning years and realize it's all you can do to make a house payment and buy food, then you know it's time to go.

Inuit are only in Canada, by the way. There are numerous other groups of Eskimos. Alaska has two major groups, the Inupiat (more closely related to the Inuit) and Yupik (not close at all).
Yupiks definitely don't like being called "Inuit". Inupiat will tolerate it, but it's not their preferred name.
The Yupik and Inupiaq languages are in the same family, but they're not mutually intelligible, and the groups historically did not get along very well at all (although they were united in hatred of the Indians of the Alaskan interior).

It's like calling a Spaniard "French" or something.

Rice is mostly grown in the Sacramento Valley, where water usually is not in such short supply. That's where most of the rivers of gold country drain.

It's important to bear in mind that California has a wide variety of climates. In the north there are massive forests. (Here's an example of the weather: https://tinyurl.com/wr9cvw7 - you probably didn't expect that, didja?)

In the south there are deserts. There are high mountain ranges running down the backbone of the state.

So it's a mistake to generalize about the climate and availability of water. The water shortages mainly affected SF and LA, and so was a big story, and the Central Valley got hosed because of idiotic policies.

well, there is some real science out there somewhere. Modern medicine has moved toward prescribing drugs for everything, but diabetes seems reversible via low carb diets, and many other benefits to leaving the standard American diet behind.

imo there is some real science, but keeping people on expensive pills has had an impact on what gets researched, and what standard practice allows. I can't believe all research is horse shit ... but certainly one should stick to double blind research with larger numbers in the studies.

381 My Mom offered to give me the family home when I retired from the Navy. I couldn't say no fast enough. I would never have been able to afford to live and support my family. I sit here enjoying the leftovers from the Thanksgiving feast and thank my lucky stars I had the foresight to pass on her offer. I still have to deal with the insanity emanating from my home state, but I at least have a chance out here.

382 372 several times a year I travel to blues states for work, NY CAL., Or,Wa. absolutely beautiful places, but laws, taxes, prices are simply prohibitive.
Upstate NY, the entire west coast, the columbia river area in Wa. all are just too beautiful to describe with words.
But homeless problems, etc are as bad as described and definitely NOT understated.

Yep, I'm seeing more and more CA plates on the AZ streets and I just have to wonder how many of them are fleeing their own votes. We've even had politicians from CA run for local government positions after failing back in their home state (or maybe winning and bleeding their hometowns dry?). Damn carpetbaggers.

We've tried to find another place to move to get away from the left, but all our choices involve snow. That's something we don't want (it's cold enough without that stuff!). So, we're stuck watching the state get taken over by everyone who wants the "good" weather and "lower" taxes (as the taxes rise every year thanks to the implants and politicians who see citizens as nothing more than cash buckets ready to be emptied out).
Our county hides proposition voting dates and doesn't send out mail-in voting packets if the lefty running the Recorder's Office doesn't like what's being proposed (we accidentally came across the voting place on the day of the vote... still lost, of course - it's not like we were voting to stop government waste or anything....).
If it's a bond override continuance for local schools to keep spending money above budget? We get notices and early mail-in voting packets slanted towards the continuance.
