THE QUOTES OF THE DAY

Quote I

“Remember God’s bounty in the year. String the pearls of His favor. Hide the dark parts, except so far as they are breaking out in light! Give this one day to thanks, to joy, to gratitude!”
Henry Ward Beecher

Quote II

“Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.”
Henry Van Dyke

Quote III

“A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.” Cicero

Quote IV

“Americans have always understood that, truly, one must give in order to receive. This should be a day of giving as well as a day of thanks.” President Ronald Reagan

From The ONT Kitchen

Not only is this a great Christmas dinner. It is also a great Thanksgiving meal. You too can make it.

*

As we approach the big dinner Mrs. Mis. Hum. has been wondering if she should make the Green Bean Casserole in the Crock Pot. So, everything you wanted to know about the Crock Pot but were afraid to ask.

The Crock Pot’s story began during the 19th century in Vilna, a Jewish neighborhood in the city of Vilnius, Lithuania. Once known as the "Jerusalem of the North," Vilna attracted a thriving community of writers and academics. There, Jewish families anticipated the Sabbath by preparing a stew of meat, beans and vegetables on Fridays before nightfall. Ingredients in place, people took their crocks to their towns’ bakeries—specifically, to the still-hot ovens that would slowly cool overnight. By morning, the low-and-slow residual heat would result in a stew known as cholent.

Things to boisterous at your place? Everyone likes pie. Here is the pie that cures the unwanted ruckus.

Speaking of fraternities, forrmer Delta House dropout is tonight's Genius Award Winner.

A Florida man was arrested after allegedly trying to recruit ISIS to attack the deans of colleges he formerly attended.

Salman Rashid, 23, was arrested on charges of soliciting another person to commit a violent crime, according to a Monday release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. Rashid allegedly attempted to call on ISIS members to target two deans from Miami-Dade College and Broward College.

82 year old Willie Murphy is thankful and Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Last Thursday around 11 p.m., a man broke into 82-year-old Willie Murphy’s Rochester home.

But she’s not pressing charges.

“I already sent him to the hospital,” she said Monday, following a workout at her home away from home, the Maplewood YMCA at 25 Driving Park Ave.

Murphy, who is barely 5-feet tall and weighs 105 pounds, beat the intruder so hard with a small table that it broke. Then while the man was on the floor, dazed, she poured shampoo in his eyes. Then, while he screamed at her — calling her “everything but the mother of God!” — she jumped on him. And then Murphy — who admitted to uttering a few four-letter words herself — grabbed a broom (the one she uses to clear snow off her car) and repeatedly jabbed him “with all my force,” she said.

131 Dang, my hometown has had enough the last few years. Two rounds of severe flooding and now, a chemical plant refining butadiene exploded and is on fire. Thank goodness it happened early in the morning and on a day when school was not in session. The plant is literally located right behind the high school. The explosion knocked homes off of foundations, blew off doors, and blew out windows. It would have been terrible if the schools were in session at the time. Only three people were injured, and there were no fatalities. Because of the fire and the potential for more explosions, the neighboring towns are under mandatory evacuation. It's not the Thanksgiving they were planning, but everyone is thankful no one was killed.

There I was, driving LadyL to the MoMeet ranch.

I merely noted "We just passed a liquor store."

{LadyL}. TURN AROUND!!!

It was a small liquor store set in a pasture. The owners, a nice couple, had a great selection. It was their life, and it showed. LadyL wanted to buy a very expensive crystal skull filled with firewater for the Horde. I managed to dissuade her, as we had enough already to wipe out all the sailors that man a destroyer.

252 I'm sorry...I posted this in the last thread, then some people came by the house...and I couldn't respond before the ONT went up.

I asked this question the day we found out Rickl had passed and keep meaning to ask again because I don't think anyone responded...although I could have missed it. Very dusty in here that day.

There is about $250 dollars left in Rick's meal acct. from donations.

I could use it to make a donation to Toys for Tots? I also offered to give it to anyone willing to take his cat that was left behind. His sister said a neighbor is taking care of it right now. Makes me sad that it's all alone in the house....

Anyway...suggestions?

I've read the responses and to answer some questions...

1) Re Rick's cat: His sister has contacted some shelters and has struck out with 2 of them. Too old to place plus some medical problems. She has some other places to call but I suspect it will be the same with all of them.

2) I've asked his sister to let me know when/where the memorial will be. She said it would most likely be in January...Rick's birth month. He wanted his ashes spread in the backyard of his boyhood home. I'm thinking because of his and his sister's re-enactment of the moon landing and walk in their backyard. (see sidebar letter if you missed it.)

Then I thought about it for a second. It was a week before Thanksgiving. Maybe in this case Happy Holidays was appropriate. Sure, they could have said Happy Thanksgiving. But I came back with Merry Christmas as a default when it was really not Christmas time.

Even our side can get too knee jerk at times. And again, this with the "controversial" Salvation Army.

And thanks to the horde. I lost a job this year, and found another. I never said anything about it, because I tend to not post much, but I come here daily for a dose of sanity. You guys (and ettes) are the best. You never fail to brighten my spirits. I owe all of you so much.

But don't expect me to buy a round at the next NYC MoMeet.

Best regards to all,

357 With glue traps and rodents the thing to do is put on a heavy set of work gloves then get a firm grip on their tail and yank them off.

The thing is you have to yank them off in a fluid motion so you can transition into a throw in one smooth motion and either heave them far enough away from your house so they do not come back or over the fence to your neighbor.

The captain saw a map with a river on it so he and some other POWs built a raft and escaped. It took them a couple of days to make it to the river. It turns out the river was the Gila River which is bone dry for most of the year. The Captain's friends said screw it and hiked back to give themselves up.

Stunt casting. And it only goes one way. I remember having a discussion with a self-described "feminist" about an all-female version of 1776. She was certain I didn't like it because I'm a sexist pig. No, I told her, I don't like it because it's a silly stunt that overshadows the show. Instead of "are the colonies going to overcome their differences and support independence?" it's "that girl playing John Adams really is a screechy bitch."

Not that I was surprised. This particular woman wears the peg in the family, IYKWIM.

Tried the glue, last night we had the joy of hear the them flopping about at 2am.

423 I can't wait for tomorrow. I'm gonna be thankful NOW! Gonna close my eyes, wake up (theoretically) and be thankful for coffee.

Tomorrow will be mom, Milady, me, daughter (but new beau will be out of town), in-town son, married son, daughter-in-law, toddling grandson, baby granddaughter, and cousin daughter's age. Weather may be a bit cool and rainy, but looks like warm, wet weather from the SW will push that cold blast away mostly.

Milady's family is gathering in mid-Illinois for tomorrow. Looks like it'll be a lot colder.

Safe travels to all travelers. Non-travelers: U R Smart.

This is me, phasing out.

425 The argument against poison is that the thing that eats the poisoned dead rat, is then also poisoned.

That's what some people say. The amount of poison to kill a little rodent isn't enough to kill something larger. That should protect dogs and cats. Hawks and Owls aren't mammals. Very different digestive tracts.

I don't let my dogs near the poison and only use when lack a cat.

The captain saw a map with a river on it so he and some other POWs built a raft and escaped. It took them a couple of days to make it to the river. He would show me the barracks where the Germans were kept, I think they didn't get torn down til the mid 70's.

What's can he do?
The IG says everything is jake, he ordered everything the GOP wanted released when the controlled the house to be released and his DOJ/FBI told him to go pound sand.

He issued an EO that Barr had the authority to de-classify and release everything, so far Barr has released bupkis, everything that has come out is from FOIA requests by Judicial watch or to get ahead of FOIA requests and spin narratives.

You have Barr/Durham doing whatever the fuck they are doing, who knows what the fuck they are doing, you hear reports its supposedly a criminal investigation, but who the fuck knows.

516 I see a deep state and even a untiparty to some extent. But i also see many "leaders" who are shocked about how society has transformed so quickly in the social media age. A lot of these people on both sides are just trying to keep up and not get trampled. They are not thought leaders, they are trying to stay ahead of a nation that has moved so left, so fast, they are bewildered. Sure it is not the whole nation, but a lot of people have bought into this craziness.

You have Trump saying no and mocking the situation. But you have all the Dems and even some Repubs that are scared of getting run over by the stupidity. I don't see any of the Dems as leading. I bet all of them would moderate their supporters if they could, but they can't.

SNL is a garbage show and I never watch it. But I watched a few clips from last week. The Demo debate skit was not bad, it didn't make many of them look that well.

There was another skit where Will Ferrell apologized that white people played native Americans in a skit. He apologized and said, "what is this, 2014?". To a leftist, he was making a serious comment. To a normal, he was saying how crazy we have become in so short a time. Is the SNL cast supposed to hire a bunch of Native Americans for one dumb skit?

In the Biden house Thanksgiving Eve is when Joe Biden, with one eye taped shut, staggers into the kitchen to find his teeth.

He hears a noise on the far end of the kitchen so he grabs his shotgun and fires off a couple of rounds into the ceiling to scare off the intruders.
He knows he needs to finish this now because the only way you deal with intruders of violence or women is to keep punching and punching and punching and punching and punching.

When he rounds the corner with his smoking shotgun and his teeth in backwards he finds Hunter curled into a fetal position with his hands covering his ears, softly crying and Hunter's giant rubber ass dong in the bucket of gravy they were going to serve with dinner.

534 If climate change/global warming/the next ice age (check to the late 70s) were a real and present danger, then show it too me. If the Russians had 20 divisions about to invade Germany, I would notice it. If Climate Change is really going to end the world in a decade and capitalism is the cause, then just prove it. Stop politicizing it, stop trying to get Commies elected. If you have proof, then prove it.

These guys don't think the world is about to end, they just want votes. They don't care if they scare millions of children and screw them up. Again, if you have proof, then show it.

If the poison is warfarin, that's not a huge concern. Rodents are apparently much more sensitive to it than are pets and predators. And you have the dilution factor to consider. The rat ate 50 milligrams of warfarin, metabolized some of it, and died. Fido eats the rat, and gets a much, much lower dose, expressed in term of grams per body weight, than Mr. Rat did. And Fido is less sensitive, to boot.

not so.

we have been trying to eradicate rats with Coumadin (Warfarin) for many decades...

what we have done is bred for rats that are able to tolerate high doses of the anti-coagulant, which is used with humans BTW, without ill effects.

when a regular, healthy animal eats the carcass, they, more often than not, get an LD50 dose of the drug.

bottom line, do not use that shit: it harms everything in the food chain, and doesn't do shit for getting rid of the rats.

eliminate cover, food sources, and shoot the little bastards, but don't poison them,

that is because the Left is certifiable. The Nazi's were fascist, socialist scum bags who didn't give a crap about any individual. They hated others so much they killed them, but they never cared about any individual at all.

To compare conservatives in America, true liberty lovers to Nazis is a scummy blood libel. I oppose all statists and the Nazis were among the worst the world has seen. Throw in Stalinists, Maoists, and so many others. F them for comparing those who believe in individual rights and freedom. They are dummies and liars. Screw them and oppose them at every turn.

While I don't like their shift away from the Salvation Army (the only charity I now personally give to), on that year's form 990, they gave $2500 to SPLC, $150,000 to the Atlanta Salvation Army, and $9,972,479 to charities overall. There are a lot of $2500 and below donations. My guess is the $2500 was a match of employee contributions.

I gave to the SPLC in the 80's. I regret that stupidity. But a headline of "SHOCK: Chick-fil-A Has Been Bankrolling the SPLC" (the headline on pjmedia) is misleading. "Bankrolling"? Really?

And the fact that I am looking at an 2017 IRS Form 990 the night before Thanksgiving is actually rather depressing

607 I have my own crockpot story.

The ex left her Rival avocado green crock pot behind when she left as she was never a cook. It was never used by us nor myself after she was gone. It was firmly glued into a kitchen storage space.

Fast forward 25 years. I'm on the phone with a friend and she it telling me about her crock pot pot roast that she and her husband enjoy. I waxed nostalgic about pot roast, how I love it, but had never made it. She told me how easy it was to make pot roast in a crock pot. I told her I didn't know if mine even worked as I had never used it and I would hate to clean the damn thing as, being an older model (an antique!), it did not have a removable inner liner and was not immersible at all. After badgering me for many months telling me to 'plug it in and test it', she finally ordered me one night to 'just do it'. 'Go get the crock pot out, put some water in it, plug it in and see it the water warms up'. So I did and, miracle of miracles, the crock pot worked. Then she told me about the slow cooker bags and how cleanup was a breeze. Now I was more than intrigued -- I was determined.

So she gave me her crock pot pot roast recipe. With slow cooker bags in hand as well as the recipe, I was now on a mission and bought a four pound bottom round roast. So I made the crock pot pot roast, following her recipe. It was delicious and I was hooked. I've made that recipe quite a few times and absolutely love it. Then I branched out and bought one of those corned beef roasts in a bag (Freirich brand). Oh my god! The crock pot worked great making that, too. Corned beef and cabbage, with the added bonus of reuben sandwiches for leftovers. I've also made corned beef hash with the leftovers.

I haven't tried any other recipes YET. But I am now a crock pot lover and committed to trying to make other favorite slow cooked food, like cassoulet, in the crock pot.

I just read up on yams vs sweet potatoes. It's all a mess of confusion. The stuff that most grocery stores call "yams" are in fact sweet potatoes.

True yams are a very different species, and you can look that up if interested.

The confusion is due to producers who erroneously called the newer orange sweet potato varieties "yams" to distinguish between the older, paler flesh varieties.

I have a story about a mug. It was actually a ceramic single-serve teapot but the top part broke, so now it's a mug.

I took it to work. People would comment about it. "That's an awesome mug!" It, objectively, is.

Every now and again, someone asks me about the mug. I said it became mine in 2016. That was when my wife decided she didn't want me in her life any more. She packed up her stuff and left. I was devastated, but for whatever reason, I failed as a husband, as a companion, as a man, and as a person who took a scared vow to spend my life with that woman. And she didn't want me. My utter failure was hard to bear.

I packed up everything that my then-wife left behind and saw the mug. It hit me: Maybe, just maybe, she had ample solid reasons to not want me. But to not want this mug is clear evidence that her judgment was clearly off in 2016.

643 rhomboid, I looked up Mississippi Pot Roast. It does sound interesting.

The one trick my friend gave me for her crock pot recipe was to use 1 cup of water and 1 healthy tsp of Better Than Bouillon Beef flavor. Once the liquid is strained after cooking, it becomes the best damn au jus going. I make left over crock pot roast beef open faced sandwiches with the au jus as a topping. When I reheat the meat, I also add some frozen peas. What a delicious knife and fork sandwich.

As far a T-Day goes, I made the Italian meatballs Wednesday. Early this morning, I'll start the gravy (the sauce versus gravy wars have begun!), adding those lovely meatballs. So my T-Day dinner will be thin spaghetti and meatballs topped with lots of grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, with fresh string beans almondine and garlic bread. I bought a $40 bottle of Ruffino Riserva Ducale Oro Chianti Classico to go with that. I love a good spaghetti and meatballs, but I've never made it before. We'll see how good mine is (the recipe is from the same crock pot pot roast friend). But the wine should help paper over any shortcomings.

658 My ex's cat Muffin, was a hard core bacon addict.

Picture a 13 lb. black female 3/4 Persian kitty. The most expressively FEMALE cat, ever.

Gold lame' collar. Or rhinestone collar. Other collars, as to the requirements as to the nature of what company was in attendance.

She would welcome visitors at the door, and mingle with guests at a party.

But let us cook bacon in the morning? She'd go NUTS in beg-gasms. And you'd have to feed her her (very precise, she'd never eat less or more), 3/4 slice of just short of crispy bacon, bit by bit, until she was done.

Feminine cat. She did not walk. She "sashayed".

But still a badass cat.

There is a story as to when she cornered an intruding Boa Constrictor in the condo, and GOD knows how the damn thing got in there to begin with.

But it was a bloody mess, and she .. wasn't.

Fourteen years when we had to let her go.

She's buried in the pet section of a people cemetery in San Antonio.

Tell you this much. I look closely at people who've lost a pet. If they shrug if off easily, I'll begin to put my distance between me n' them.

Pets will always tell you true, even after they're gone.

Some even on the right say criticizing CFA is sour grapes. I beg to differ. The food was good for fast food. But if you think it was great, well, enough said about that.

The concern I have is that lately companies that get woke do not go broke. Dicks Sporting goods is doing quite well if you look at their stock price. They should have been crushed for being gun grabbing statists. Target is blowing it out although there recent CEO is playing down the SJW crap and I think some of their crazy policies are state specific. SBUX continues to thrive although many flee from the crappy coffee and poor ambience.

I think conservatives should turn on CFA if only for a short time to tell them we don't like it. But they made this choice for a reason. Someone made a comparison sheet and decided woke is the way forward. I wish conservatives would turn on them in their main areas and they would rescind the anti Christian plans. But that is not likely. They are looking to Canada and the UK.

A few have said CFA got woke so they could do well in China but that doesn't make any sense. The Chinese are not woke as far as I can tell. They even have derogatory terms for lefty movies.
I want "Get Woke, Go Broke" to be real. But often it doesn't work that way. Conservatives do no organize and boycott. But the Left supports those who cater to their will.

Sure we can swear off CFA. But what about Dicks? I would never step into that place but they seem to be doing well with the wine moms. I wish I had an answer here. Gillette seemed to pay a price. But conservatives by nature do not organize and boycott. The left can turn a company with a few tweets from thought leaders like Alyssa Milano.

I wish I had an answer here. I wish we could show them that they are turning off the silent majority. Does it even exist these days? I still see people donating to the Salvation Army. People of all stripes do this. But it seems CFA is going to get off pulling the biggest switcheroo in ages.

I have recommended them before. But I stand by the Bic Flex four series. I can't vouch for their single blades, but their high end disposable razors last a long time. I have used a three pack over 6 months. YMMV, but that has been consistent with me. No way I am going back to Gillette. I did the wet shaving thing too for a while but am over it.

in many ways, the Popeye's version is better. in the end, they will all replicate it. It is a fried chicken breast with bread and a pickle. It is not rocket science. The issue with Popeye's is they are poorly run. They made a disaster out of this sandwich roll out. The restaurants i have visited were not that clean and not very efficient. The company that owns them is QSR. They own Popeye's, Burger King, and Tim Horton's. The stock might go up, who knows. But Popeye's is only a small percentage of their business. Tim Hortons is the largest part by far and they have had a lot of problems. I am not predicting the stock either way. But there is no Popeye's sandwich pure play that I know of.

768 Regarding CfA

I always enjoyed the interaction with the staff.

The food was good.

And when the Left demanded their heads for their religious beliefs, we supported them with our patronage.

I don't expect them to go broke because our family takes our business elsewhere.

But just as they have the right to conduct business in the way that they see fit, I have a right to spend my money in the manner which I also see fit.

As we part ways, I wish them luck.

Thus enders the lesson for today.

All rise for the singing of Hymn #355.

But it is always so crowed you can't even get in the parking lot. We used to have a Bojangles that was pretty good but they went out of business. 603 Just saw the article at Breitbart on Chick-fil-A funding SPLC. I'll be curious to see if they see a drop in sales. Get woke go broke?
Posted by: Grimaldi at November 27, 2019 09:59 PM

Really?

And the fact that I am looking at an 2017 IRS Form 990 the night before Thanksgiving is actually rather depressing

very few places do actual fried chicken. Zaxby's is growing but do they actually do fried chicken? Chick Fil A cooks a breast, that is not fried chicken, that is a sandwich.

Popeye's is pretty good. I a not big on KFC as the chicken seems almost boiled to me. There are others like Church's, Bojangles, and the more regional Roy Rogers. But not a one even came close to the fried chicken i had at a bbq joint in NC. It should not be that hard if that is all you do. These bbq people did it as a side note and made a mockery of competitors.

BTW, If you want the name. It was Parker's in Wilson NC.

i will keep that place in mind. If someone on their travels does go to Parker's in Wilson, they will find the whole area to be in a bit of a time warp It is old school to the max. No chance of ordering a craft beer. You order sweet tea or sweater tea. I like those old school regions. I hope they continue.

780 Last year, two days before Thanksgiving, vets at the Big Corporate Emergency Vet Hospital recommended my girlfriend and I euthanize our almost 13 y.o. kitty within a few days. She was lethargic, had gotten hair mats because her hair was long and her right back leg had been amputated in July, '16, had advanced kidney disease (malformed kidneys, most likely a runt), a biliary tumor growing off her liver, hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, enlarged heart, heart murmur, kyphosis (curving of spine - a hunch back). We ignored medical "advice" and instituted an intensive home hospice. She rebounded like a champ for 4 and 1/2 months until her renal system just gave out. The night before she died, Mama (my GF to Kitty) cleaned her up and put her onto a pee pad in her kitty plush bed which Mama put on her stomach so she could recline back and monitor Kitty. Suddenly, what now looks like a bald squirrel, this tiny 3-legged cat, all skin and bones, barely eaten in days, looks up, looks at Mama, and proceeds to try to claw her way from the plush bed to Mama's right, upper arm. Kitty's favorite place in the world was nestled up against Mama with her forelegs over the arm. Of course, Mama picked her up and gently put her down where she was trying to get by sheer willpower, and Kitty went to sleep. That cat was the sweetest and most genuine feline I've ever heard of. Nothing against dogs, but if you get the right cat and you spend time with it doing "Darmok and Jalad on the ocean. . .", you'll have an amazing friend.
