Myles Garrett, Suspended for Hitting a Player In the Head With a Helmet Wielded Like a Club, Now Says, "Oh Wait, I Just Remembered, He Used a Racial Slur, That's Why I Did It"

The slur was so seared into his memory he forgot to mention it until after the NFL suspended him indefinitely.

Now he trots out his Racial Privilege -- yes, he has privilege due to his race, not a disadvantage -- and asserts that he can't be punished.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett [aka Cleveland Juicy Smolliere] told NFL officials that Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph used a racial slur leading up to their fight, ESPN reported on Thursday.

An on-field fight broke out during the last 8 seconds of the Browns and Steelers game on Nov. 14. It escalated when Garrett ripped off Rudolph's helmet and hit him in the head with it. The NFL banned Garrett for the final six regular-season games and playoffs

ESPN reported Garrett made the accusation during his appeal hearing on Wednesday. Appeals officer James Thrash "remained stoic and took copious notes" while listening to Garrett, according to ESPN.

Mason Rudolf denies it and the Steelers are backing him up.

The NFL has searched for evidence of Garrett's very convenient 11th-hour race hustle, and has found "no evidence" of it.

Rudoph's lawyer issued this statement:

"According to ESPN, in his appeal, Myles Garrett falsely asserted that Mason Rudolph uttered a racial slur toward him, prior to swinging a helmet at Mason's uncovered head, in a desperate attempt to mitigate his suspension. This is a lie. This false allegation was never asserted by Garrett in the aftermath of the game, never suggested prior to the hearing, and conspicuously absent in the apology published by the Browns and adopted by Garrett.

"The malicious use of this wild and unfounded allegation is an assault on Mason's integrity which is far worse than the physical assault witnessed on Thursday. This is reckless and shameful. We will have no further comment."

Garrett's suspension was upheld on appeal.

Seems awfully funny that Garrett only remembered this detail at his appeals hearing after having been socked with a huge suspension.

To be honest, I really didn't think he deserved such a long suspension. Yes, striking a man with a helmet is dangerous. But this is a contact sport, and sometimes people get chippie, and sometimes it escalates, and it's hard to extract yourself from an escalating situation.

Especially if you subscribe to a macho ethic of not backing down and so forth.

So yeah, I think he should have been punished, but I also think the punishment should have taken into account of the fact that, you know what? It's hard to de-escalate when you're fighting.

But now that he's taking out his Racial Privilege card and making the typical "Devil White Man Is To Blame So I'm Innocent" racial play?

This lie is a premeditated assault.

I hope they suspend him for life.

And pro-tip: When you can Plead Your Race and expect more lenient punishment, your race is not some barrier to your success, but an unfair racial privilege.

Oh: Reviewing the actual hit (video here), I think I have to retract the bit about not thinking such a long suspension was justified.

Garrett started this entire episode -- this wasn't mutual chippiness, as I'd guessed -- by not only tackling a quarterback who had already passed the ball, but slamming him hard into the ground, driving him into the ground.

That right there is a big suspension.

Taking it to the next step and attacking the guy with his own helmet?

Well. That's special, and deserves a special punishment.

20 Meh - only way I'd watch the NFL again is if they had this kind of stuff every play. Turn it into Warhammer meets Blood Bowl. Random blunt objects everywhere.

Legal hit yet not-needed soft takedown led to Rudolph going for Garrett's helping, which led to Garrett pulling Rudolph's off, which led to Rudolph going back for some more for some reason, which led to an unsatisfying hit on the quarterback's head.

It was like a wilted salad. Really needed more crunch.

Agreed. No player consents to this level of violence when he steps onto a sports field. And taunting doesn't justify it either any more than it would off the field. Sportsball isn't the problem. The problem is the people who run it these days.

It used to be a fantastic venue for lessons on character, was for generations of kids. Lately it's fallen victim to the same forces that have corrupted pretty much all of our culture.

Posted by: JackStraw at November 21, 2019 06:27 PM (ZLI7S)

97 The reason he deserves a lifetime suspension for that hit alone is that with all the sanctioned violence, the entire sport depends on players who have the ability to go right up the edge of what's allowed, but who won't go over that line. (Most penalties are simply unintentional mistakes) The ones who cross that line are like dogs that can't be trained to always come back when they're called - you can't trust them and you can't use them.

And while it may seem unseemly to use an animal comparison, I think it fits here, because you have handlers (coaches) who need to have complete assurance that their directions will be strictly followed. Without that, a player is useless no matter how much raw skill he has.

157 I have to say I disagree with Aces take in a big way.

First, he obviously didn't drive Randolph into the ground. That would have been flagged. He rolled over so Randolph landed on him. It is right there in the video. He intentionally took the brunt of it.

Second, Randolph initiates the extracurricular by pulling at Garretts helmet and possibly kneeing him in the groin. Racial epithet in the midst of all that doesn't seem unlikely but isn't necessary. Randolph is clearly attacking Garret.

Third, after Garret removes Randolphs helmet, he is pushed back by a lineman and disengages. The conflict with Randolph is now over, except Randolph gets up and chases after him and makes it a 2-1 fight and grabs Garrets facemask and starts pulling on it. Garret smacked him with his own helmet. Shouldn't have. Needs a suspension. 2 games seems about right.

Fourth, Pouncey then comes in and shows what a big man he is by repeatedly punching and kicking a defenseless man in the head. Garret at this point is pinned under the lineman. 4 games would be fine by me for brave brave sir Pouncey.

Posted by: Minnfidel at November 21, 2019 06:30 PM (U7cQ/)

Helmets were mandated for players coming into the NHL starting in the 1979-80 season, but anyone around before that could choose to continue playing without a lid. There were a lot of them in the 80s. Last helmetless player was Craig MacTavish, who played without one right up until he retired.

If you're familiar with the 1972 Summit Series, the entire Soviet team wore helmets and the goalie, Vladislav Tretiak, had the full cage and helmet that later became common in the NHL. The Canadian goalies, Ken Dryden and Tony Esposito, wore facemasks, and the only guy on the rest of the team to wear a helmet was the series' ultimate hero, Paul Henderson.

235 "Randolph is attacking Garrett"?

Good lord, it's amazing what biased fans see.

By the way, Garrett will lose $1.1 M in pay during his suspension and he was fined, but I do not think that has been disclosed yet.

As Garrett's teammates said along with other NFL players, these players have families to support, etc. There is no excuse to try to deliberately injure someone and most had never seen anything like what Garrett did, whether in practice, or in a game.

As an aside, Garrett's lie that Rudolph called him a racist name is laughable. Several years ago, the NFL wanted to establish a rule that racist epithets said during a game, specifically the n word , would result in a fine, suspension, and a penalty right then on the team.. Why? Because the lineman , receivers, and safety, etc all call each other the n word constantly during plays.

The players union had a fit, and refused to go along with it , threatening a strike, court cases, etc.and the NFL finally gave up

So, Garrett can take his little fake complaint and shove it, no sympathy from me.

It's fun to watch games and root for your team - or used to be, until the NFL got woke.

People have hard lives and have different ways of enjoying their free time. Sports are, ideally, a celebration of the fastest, the strongest, the most agile, doing stuff most of us could never do ourselves.

Are they overpaid? Yes. Can sports be corrupted? Of course. It's still enjoyable to crack open a beer and watch a QB time a throw just right or a pitcher drop a perfect curveball past a hitter.

Posted by: Donna&&&&V. at November 21, 2019 06:59 PM (d6Ksn)

251 One thing the NFL should do to make the Cleveland Brown-stains clean up their act is to require the Head Coach to where a Suit and Tie on the sidelines.

His sweatshirt with "Dawg Pound" on it is emblematic of the undisciplined Browns.

Maybe make them play their Pittsburgh home game at a neutral site for the next few seasons too.

They blew a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers a few years ago when their defensive players went on a violent attack against the Steelers at the end of that game too.
Posted by: rd at November 21, 2019 06:34 PM (+0uDE)

Did they try to explain Aussie Rules Rugby? My goal in life is to see a live game in Australia. I fell in love watching the game when ESPN showed the games late at night. Now they are are Fox but it's such a crazy game.

The media has let it go, but LeBron fakes graffiti at his house for some attention. It's possible that he merely lied about something done by someone he knew. Either way, the police investigation has turned up nothing, for an area that should have plenty of video, including at LeBron's house.

I don't either. It's easy enough to google the entire play. Back Judge never reaches for the flag. The hit was legal, and pretty fucking tame.

Rudolph gets pissed, starts yanking on Garrett's helmet. Garret pulls Rudolph's helmet off. Rudolph comes back for more - and that's when Garrett costs himself six game checks.

What this is going to do is prompt some d-line coaches to go back to "get your money's worth" when engaged with a quarterback.

Yes, the days of Tom Landry are long gone. Now, most coaches in the NFL look like one of the janitors waiting to start cleaning out the stadium. Bill Bellichek is a master at looking like an unemployed highway trash picker waiting for his sister to drive him to McDonalds and most of the rest have followed suit. How you can coach a sport that requires most of the players to be in strong, aerobic condition and look like a walking heart attack wrapped in an oversize sweatshirt is beyond me.

Most college coaches actually look respectable but not all. Bert Beilima is a prime example.

Cricket is actually simpler even than baseball (which has the balk rule, which most people do not understand).

305 Back in the '90's I read a fascinating book about sex differences (it's probably banned now.) I remember it said the ability to throw well and to time throws was undoubtedly one of the most important skills for prehistoric men to learn. It could mean the difference between food for you and your family and starvation. Men who survived were the ones who were skilled in spatial ability and gauging distances and following the trajectory of thrown objects. And guys who are still good at that stuff make a lot of money today.
(Men still score higher on spatial ability then women do - we are less likely to be color-blind and to know subtle differences in color because you could poison your kids if you fed them the wrong berries.)

Kentucky had a kid caught red-handed reaching into the pile twisting on the Florida QB's ankle.

Reaction was typical - lie that it didn't happen first. The video is right fucking there. Then move to "it happens all the time".

When people's emotions are involved, because they see black and white players, because they like Team X or hate Team Y, hang it up - there will be no objectivity. None. I'm convinced their lizard brain actually kicks in and creates images they find more pleasing. I'm not kidding. I think they "see" something different than what is there.
