No cartoons! The shows were all yucky - "Days Of Our Lives As the World Turns Our Guiding Light". I have Win7 because I detest Win10. I know this sound stupid, but will the operating system still work after support is dropped?
Posted by: Ladyl at November 21, 2019 10:19 PM (TdMsT) Yes, the operating system will continue to work as before. What will change is that, in absence of security patches, it will become vulnerable to any exploits that are discovered in the future but for which fixes are not backported to Win7. Hardware drivers are unlikely to be developed with Win7 compatibility in mind, so new hardware (printers and such) are not guaranteed to work with it. New software will be hit-or-miss. It may work, but if it doesn't, you aren't likely to get anyone to support it on that platform. The same thing happened to XP and, broadly speaking, any other technology that's old enough that the vendor no longer has any incentive to support it. It's coming up on 10 years old, and many newer computers won't support it at all, even if you have a copy that you want to install over the Win10 that came with it. I believe Win 7 system will still function, but not have any further security updates, so you may be vulnerable to future attacks. I don't think the current updates include a kill switch that crashes and bricks the system on 1 Jan 2020, but I wouldn't put it past Bill G. Any new software packages will probably not be able to run under Win 7. My 2 cents Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar knows EDKH at November 21, 2019 10:26 PM (+00Vt) 111

I stubbornly stuck to my old XP x64 install for years. I had installs of Windows 7 and then 8 and 10 all set up, but I stuck with XP well after it's EOL. What finally prompted me to move was Chrome dropped development and later versions would no longer work with XP. It was all right for a while, until sites just stopped working as new features were used. It finally got to be too much, and I switched. I was gonna go to Win7 x64 Ultimate install, but it turned out I just went straight to Win 10 pretty much. I use Classic Shell which makes things usuable for me. >The pope said
No, not really. Before everyone starts to panic, read the source material, and I mean dig down as far as you can. This is the most misquoted and misrepresented pope possibly in living memory. Admittedly, he doesn't do himself any favors with his penchant for speaking off the cuff and never correcting the record, but hey. About the "world government:" first off, it's from Scalfari, an atheist buddy of the pope from way back. Why are they buddies? Who knows. My best friend is a pagan communist and I'm a traditionalist Catholic. We don't talk politics. Scalfari is notorious for putting words into the pontiff's mouth and implying intent that, upon further reading, isn't evident. So to with this. The article makes no mention whatsoever of a world government, but does imply that the pope thinks things would be better if the Church had a guiding role over secular governments. You know, like every pope going back to at least St Martin. This is not new or unique, and the furthest thing from a realistic "threat." Eco Sins: this is another case of the pope stating orthodoxy in an unorthodox way. Even the linked LifeSiteNews article admits that what he's saying has been the case from day one (being good stewards), but it's poorly phrased by inventing a new name for old sin. It's PR, folks. Sloppy PR, but PR nonetheless. He might try to change the catechism to make an implicit explicit (for my brothers and sisters, 340-344 are the relevant paragraphs), but even that's just hot air at this point. Even his talk about the death penalty is explicitly the opinion of one pope and not considered infallible (i.e. it can and probably will be revised at some point). The Church has always been leery of capital punishment: this particular pope has an Obaman penchant for "legislating" (wrong word, but it will do for now) his own personal opinions, but because of how he does it, they have the authority and impermanence of Executive Orders. Tl;dr: this is all overblown and mostly the fault of bad reporting and sloppy PR speak. Posted by: M. Bibliophile at November 21, 2019 10:51 PM (FaG+p) 209

Posted by: M. Bibliophile at November 21, 2019 11:13 PM (FaG+p) Oh, I think we know why. What I can't fathom is how it became so widespread. Consider, however, that the Latin Mass was, in some places, done so badly that perhaps it needed to be wiped out and brought back to be made whole. At least, that's the charitable explanation. More likely, the commie asshats that took over in the 1960's made a huge grab for power, culminating in Cranky Franky, who is hopefully not too big on longevity. Actually, I just remembered an Egyptian Coptic physician I used to know urged me to go to a Coptic service. He said they're in communion with Rome. I never did although I drive past their church fairly frequently and it looks lovely. I think I'll try it.
The physician (very nice man) went back to Cairo to visit his parents when there were a bunch of Islamic attacks on Coptic churches there a few years back. He's terribly worried about them. He said they are very old, not in good health and simply don't feel strong enough to uproot their lives and move across the globe at this point in their lives. But he said they are the last remaining generation of an ancient church. Posted by: Donna&&&&V. at November 21, 2019 11:21 PM (d6Ksn) 315

I noticed the other day, as I was driving by, First Slavic Baptist Church
Portland has tons of Russian Baptists, as does Sacramento. A lot of them are Russian-speaking from the eastern Ukraine. The story goes that there was a Baptist radio station broadcasting into the USSR, and the two pastors on the show were from Portland and Sacramento, so these were the two cities that Russian Baptists had heard of. Funny thing about Ukrainian and Russian "meddling in our elections"....
Ukraine elected a PM whom Soros and Obama felt was a little too agreeable to Russia in their opinion, so Soros funded a coup to oust the elected PM in favor of one funded by Soros who would be EU friendly and relevant to Soros' interests. As a non-Catholic, I'll admit that JP-II drew my interest as to that heritage.
He possessed and projected a Majesty of Faith that had been lacking in his predecessors, and was sorely lacking in much of the Protestant world in his era. Following him, Benedict appealed to my intellectual aspirations of faith, along with his evident discipline of (catholic) doctrine, much of which with which I still do not agree, but admit to the logic of that faith. Then comes Frankie. You don't have a Pope, there, my Catholic friends. He's many things, but he's not a Man of God. I've seen your JPII and your Benedict. I can see the Christ in those men. Being born back in '58, I've seen your earlier Popes, but they pale in comparison to JP-II and Benedict. Frankie, though? He oughta go fishing with Fredo. They'd get along swimmingly. Guadalcanal Diary.
Fourth grade, about 1967, and the Bookmobile Librarian denied me the checkout of that book, because I stumbled in the reading of some of the words. Told my Mom about that. Next week, when the Bookmobile arrived at the school, my Mom stepped aboard that Bookmobile Bus. Ten minutes later, it was established that I would never be denied a book, ANY book, from that Bus, ever again. My Mom ROCKED. And sadly passed, way the hell too soon. 1978. She was 54. I was 19. She was also a Rosie the Riveter on B-24s at Consolidated, in San Diego, CA. Though I did not inherit her bigotry against Catholics, I did though adopt a wee bit of Missouri-ism. SHOW ME. Posted by: Insomniac at November 22, 2019 01:23 AM (NWiLs) My true and saving grace. What YOU saw, was my late Dad's and my Step Mom's house. Though small, they build a prosperity of a sort. My MOM's place? Post-divorce, lost our (her)house in San Diego. Rental house and then apartment, thereafter. An older brother already kicked out of the Army, and hurtling headlong into a life of crime. And I enlisted into the USAF in my Junior year of H.S., trying to secure a future where I could establish my dying Mom as a Dependent, and help support her therewith. USAF said FU to "dependent". So I paid cash out of my meager 1976 E-1 paychecks to help support her. Carried this on through E-3 in '78, when she inevitably, passed. My Mom *tried* to do right by me, but was far too sick, scared and dying in those last years, to have been much of a guide. Books, literature and the worlds they presented, helped IMMENSELY. So did a San Diego Deputy Marshall, who stepped into my life at exactly the right time. Taught me to camp, taught me to sail, taught me to shoot, taught me to be a motorcyclist, taught me to build, all at exactly the right time in my life. Let me tell you this, Horde. Whereupon, the WARRIORS wreaked havoc upon the Japanese fleets, be they merchant, warship or submarine. Such is the same evolution from peacetime to war, regardless of era. Rear Adm Green is an asshole. He is not only hell bent on taking Gallagher's Trident pin, he also wants to throw out the officers over Gallagher, that supported him. Gallagher's Lt. has been trying to leave the military since the end of the trial, but Green stopped him from leaving on his own freewill. Obviously there are lots of SEAL issues and Green needs a scapegoat or three. Since Green's boss just got promoted in August, hopefully he will see the error in his support of Green and take care of it.

We have been pushing Fr. to celebrate a Tridentine
Mass or two - he's receptive but it's slow going. I am heartened by the increasing numbers of women wearing veils lately. It's funny - that got kicked off by two very young girls wearing them (and kneeling for communion). The uh, more mature women then started to reestablish the practice. Love it. Posted by: Tonypete at November 21, 2019 10:57 PM (Y4EXg) Went to the Tridentine Mass in town a few weeks ago (couldn't get my butt in gear for anything earlier) and had a mixed reaction. The church is a large cathedral, and of coure he's way up at the front with his back to the congregation, and of course they decided not to mic him, so it was mumble, mumble, mumble the whole time. OTOH hand, lots of folks there, and the two pews in front of me were filled with three generations of a family with a boatload of kids, the youngest of whom were directly in front of me. So 3- and 4-year-old boys squirming and climbing and crawling under, and slightly older sisters pulling them up and hugging and petting them, and so on and such like. Very entertaining and enjoyable, and certainly a blessing, but all things considered kind of hard to keep the old reverence quotient topped up. The church is a large cathedral, and of course he's way up at the front with his back to the congregation, and of course they decided not to mic him, so it was mumble, mumble, mumble the whole time. It's helpful to have a missal or one of the booklets the church provides that help the congregation follow what the priest is doing. When I do so, I never feel that I'm cut off from what's happening but participating through the priest. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 22, 2019 05:50 AM (7rVsF) 613

I like the EO church. I'd probably like Eastern Rite Services in the Catholic Church. People resonate with different styles of worship. I think reverence has more to do with the attitude of the mind of the participant than what's going on. If you come into the church focused on God and God's Glory and the awesome presence of God in the sanctuary than you are more likely to be reverent. It's not about being entertained and the ways God speaks through the service..

One of my dogs is dreaming hard, growling and wagging his tail alternately. Must have images of both Adam Schiff and Elise Stefanik going through his head.

Dunno, on the first KFC. I could believe it, but Berea is not a big place. I work on the north side and never really get into the town. According to a news story I found while enjoying the abundance of time on this crappy phone, says the lanes are expected to be closed for another hour or more. Thank God I got gas today and it is fairly warm. Raining.

I'm betting ESPN comes to the rescue of Myles Garrett today, and we'll hear words like "lived experience", and "my truth" to counter his obvious lies. The tragic fact is the race card still works for a lot of people and Garret and his lawyers know this. He and Colin Kaepernick can do a buddy tour...

KFC was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, an entrepreneur who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression.
Sanders identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" franchise opened in Utah in 1952. Posted by: rickb223 at November 22, 2019 07:10 AM (dLr9j) 704
Tesla has announced it's first pickup truck, as designed by Woody Allen. He used it in "Sleeper" back in the 1970's. The truck will be for sale beginning in two years. "Pinkie-promise", says CEO Elon Musk.

How did Sanders get from Kentucky to Utah? Was he Mormon?

"Pope Francis: World Government Must Rule U.S. 'For Their Own Good"
No fan of Pope Francis but that is from some interview a couple years ago where quotes were taken completely out of context and went viral and still going around the internet. (He did mention something about a Federated Europe.) Fake News. Posted by: Ripley at November 22, 2019 07:13 AM (MxEKc) 708
Please use the AOSHQ "Elements of Style" preferred pro-nouns. Bergoglio is to be referred to as either "Anti-pope Francis" or "Pope Francis the Apostate."

Tami, good luck. I just spent four days with my father-in-law whose memory is going so he tells you the same thing over and over again and he loves to talk and he also tried to melt us. The memory thing I know is not his fault, of course, but he definitely tried to melt us which makes everything more difficult.
Oh, and he's very hard of hearing and had lost his hearing aids when we got there. So we had to shout and repeat things for a while until we found them. Took 24 hours to find them but by golly, we were determined. Posted by: bluebell at November 22, 2019 07:17 AM (/669Q) 712
When the money stops flowing into the Bishop's coffers, the shit will get real. btw, the prophesies of "Our Lady of Acita" (the smoke of Satan in the highest reaches of the Church, bishop against bishop, cardinal against cardinal) are imminent.

... incidentally, that car crushing bit is a great scene, but it's a real plot hole - why would goldfinger allow the mobster to choose to leave with a gold payment when he ended killing all the mobsters anyway?

El Commandante Zero opened his pie-hole yesterday, saying the average person has too many opinions and its all the fault of Facebook and Youtube. Opinions should only be sourced from official outlets, and blessed by the government.
We narrowly escaped from a Chinese style government, though the social credit system is still a big threat. Can Trump stick around until these technocrat fascists retreat? Posted by: Huck Follywood at November 22, 2019 07:19 AM (NVYyb) 718

Shadout Mapes, he has all the warm things he needs, believe me. He likes to just wear a T-shirt around the house and likes to sleep with only a sheet, I guess. He was indignant when we turned down the heat to 72 because he said it was freezing in his room and he had to put on TWO BLANKETS! Believe me, I know this man and it's a power struggle, lol.

But thank you for the info. All his sweaters are hanging neatly in the spare room, along with the flannel sheets we gave him 15 or 16 years ago, which are still in the package.
