Polls: Support for Impeachment Dropping, Trump Gains on His Democrat Opponents, Now Leading (Within the Margin of Error) Three of the Four Top Democrat Challengers

A Morning Consult poll from a couple of days ago found that opposition to impeachment had jumped ten points.

Opposition by independents to the House’s ongoing impeachment inquiry jumped 10 percentage points in the last week, according to a Politico–Morning Consult poll released Tuesday.

The poll showed 47 percent of independents opposed the inquiry, compared to 37 percent last week. Meanwhile support for the inquiry by independents fell 7 points to 40 percent.

Support for the inquiry among all respondents fell 2 points to 48 percent, while opposition to it rose 3 points to 45 percent.

Now comes an Emmerson poll, confirming these basic findings, and showing Trump ahead of three of the four top Democrat candidates, and trailing only one -- Sanders, oddly enough -- by 1%.

Pop-Pop Biden seems like a paper tiger.

If you can't read that:

HUGE --> Another poll finds impeachment backfiring.

* Trump approval "bounced" 5 points to 48% (was 43% in October)

* Support for impeachment drops 5 points.

* A SEISMIC 30-point swing among independents, who now OPPOSE impeachment by 15 points.

Further details:

A new Emerson poll finds President Trump’s approval has increased in the last month with 48% approval and 47% disapproval, a bounce from 43% approval in the last Emerson National poll in October. Support for impeachment has flipped since October from 48% support with 44% opposing to now 45% opposed and 43% in support. The biggest swing is among Independents, who oppose impeachment now 49% to 34%, which is a reversal from October where they supported impeachment 48% to 39%.

...

The president’s support in the Republican primary increased this month to 93% against primary challengers Bill Weld and Joe Walsh. Trump's head to head matchups in the General Election against the top Democratic candidates have also tightened since October, now trailing Sanders by 1 point and leading his other three potential opponents.

I assume Trump is actually beating Warren but both of their numbers get rounded down or up to 50%. Obviously, these aren't big leads.

BTW, there's an impeachment thread below, if you want a thread specifically for discussion about the fake impeachment hearings.

I'm pretty sure as of right now, they don't believe they will win. Looking at it from that perspective, their actions today seem fairly logical.

Simply: how does reporting that Trump is closing the gap in battleground states against the dem contenders actually serve to elect a democrat- which is what I believe the purpose of all reporting of polls is supposed to do.

May be a bit tinfoil hat, but I think polls are only used to shape public opinion- not report on it.

86 The early polls on Impeach Yes/No were essentially just asking "Do you like Trump?" since basically zero % of those being polled knew anything about the impeachment "case" and thus they could assume the case was valid if they disliked Trump or assume the opposite if they liked Trump.

As the details of the "case" firmed up the polling question becomes more along the lines of "Should Trump be impeached because assorted dweebs and posers dislike him?"

Persuadables will be begin to drift away for the "Yes, impeach him" answer accordingly.

Maybe they only give two options or ask how people are leaning and include that. It might be an indicator that people who are more iffy are more likely to go to Trump.

Looking at the retarded coverage by CNN, NY Times, NY Post and even Fox for Chrissakes I think that the "backfire" is mostly among the already pro Trump and that most others are just getting a "confused" hearing with "no smoking gun." So Eeyore in one sense but still optimistic about the electoral outcome.

There is no such thing as a seismic shift in public opinion. That is a very gradual thing. It takes at least a period of months, often years, and sometimes decades.

This is doubly true in the case of DJT. My main man could cap a dude in broad daylight on 5th Avenue, and he wouldn't lose my vote.

For the people who dislike him, he could invent the cure for cancer, and if they had lymphoma, they'd be mainlining Trumpexa while screaming for his impeachment.

What really hurt in the midterms was the exodus of a lot of veteran congressmen who quit since the Rs term limit chairmanships now and they didn't want to sit in any other chair. Had to come up with too many new candidates to fast. Trump then concentrated on locking up the Senate to get judges and checkmate this kind of nonsense.

Posted by: Galil at November 21, 2019 02:34 PM (Pzzpr)

143 86, Frankovitch's Monster--You've got it regarding public opinion. A old reputable pollster, Yankelovitch, wrote a book called Coming to Public Judgment. In that book, he notes that when first presented with a new problem, the public cycles back and forth with the initial take being their underlying stereotypes and biases. But the general public can and does learn and then develops relatively stable public opinion outcomes.

The Mueller investigation and the subsequent impeachment is a real risk for Dems as it really interferes with what their caucus all agrees upon--"More" Money given to them. It harms the Dem candidates for president as their giveaways aren't getting picked up on by the low information voters needed in a general election. It also does not let them hone their messages to get the most popular gimmes for this cycle.

If the general election turnout is depressed, Dems will lose.

Posted by: whig at November 21, 2019 02:34 PM (MItID)

However, in Johnson's defense, the law was passed over his veto and had the U.S. Supreme Court had any stones, the law would have been declared unconstitutional as all prior presidents including Washington argued that they could fire executive dept employees for any reason at all.

-------

To be sure. In any opinion-shift, there's a tipping point. With Trump's actual real-life, not fake-polled popularity I suspect that point was when Mueller went down in flames at those hearings.

But even so, it take more than a couple of weeks for that shift to manifest itself observably. I will maintain
that there's no such thing as 30 point swing in opinion in less than a month, without some kind of earth-shaking event imposing itself on the scenario.

What it does show though is people are sticking with Trump. And I give Trump 3-4 points in every poll.

I think we already progressed to the point that every outrage is just about the general outrage itself. It is always merely a pretext to talk about their general dislike of Trump.

The Schiff hearings seem to be nothing more that a ploy to try to get every little grievance they can air to have the widest coverage they can possibly have. It really is a just a slightly more upscale bitch session.

224 This was meant for the Joe Biden thread below, but his remarks about "punching" out domestic violence reminded me of of a song I heard recently.

During Mad Magazine's heyday back in the Sixties, they actually produced a satirical Off-Broadway revue, The Mad Show. One of the songs was, "Hate Song". A bunch of kids (in other words, Baby Boomers) vow to "stamp out Hate". This quickly escalates into wanting to torture Hate, murder Hate, and violate Hate's corpse. The song ends with a grown-up Establishment liberal warmly praising their idealism, whereupon the kids immediately gang up and kill him.

A song as relevant now as it was back then.

246 171, preference cascades aka bandwagon effects do not work the way you think. These occur mostly when a new issue or politician comes up, Obama beat Hillary over such primarily because he was a new face that was clear from all the warts of Clinton inc.

It could happen in a general election, but at this stage, impeachment appears to be a known quantity and given that the Dems have now had a "non-partisan" counsel fail to bring Trump down, a partisan attempt is unlikely to do any better. Any third attempts will probably lead to implosion of support from independents for Dems as most people do not want to live in a country where turmoil is 24/7 on who is the leader. Business executives also may lean left but do not want marches in the streets for the long run. Notice how BLM and Occupy mysteriously vanished when they became negatives.

I've been reading up on how those kinds of operations work. They're actually fairly sophisticated setups. But at the end of day, you have to work with the hiring pool that's available.

All the money, cool technology, and solid digital media strategy in the world can't get past the fact that the workers available to companies like Shareblue are basically the lowest common human denominator that can be found, short of people who actually can't operate a keyboard.

CSpan has reframed Shiff's folly from 'House Impeachment Inquiry' to 'Key Capitol Hill Hearings'

Trump did place the fake transcript on another server which vinderman was not authorized to access but which he did access.

Vinderman cannot claim "that's not the real transcript I saw the real one" because he would admit to a crime

Posted by: RoyalOil, Vicroy Canadian Territories at November 21, 2019 02:44 PM (6e/MW)

Vindy was in on the call, so I don't see how a fake transcript would fool him in that way. Now if Vindy added stuff to the report he gave the whistleblower, that might be an issue for Schiff if he trusted him.

I treat English accents the same way I do Hispanics. I know there's more than one. I know you're not all the same. But if you are Scottish, I'm going to say "hey, I like your English accent," just like if you are Guatemalan, I'm going to say "oh, you Mexicans sure are nice."

Why?

Because, that's why.

402 The thing with polls regarding Trump. I think many people are afraid to publicly admit they support him.
I mean, shit, look at how they treat people with MAGA hats or just folks trying to have a nice dinner. You have no idea who these people are that are calling. Might be paranoia but how the left treats political opponents these days? I sure as hell wouldn't want them to know anything about me.

403 I suspect the WH does not want to be impeached. That would be a win to not be impeached.

But if he is impeached, then he sorta wants a full Senate trial to call whomever he wants - rather than a quick acquittal by the Senate.

Now that doesn't mean he should favor that over a quick acquittal. You never know where this could go with a full Senate trial.

But either Trump is trying to goad them into impeaching him, or make them bluff or back down.

Either way, I don't think he really cares one way or the other.

But Diet Coke has been around for a long time and it has its own flavor. There are people who genuinely like Diet Coke - I know some of them. They don't like Coke Zero as much *because* it tastes more like the real thing.

The only way it makes sense is if Mitch has already assured Pelosi that he has the votes to remove Trump. But he doesn't, and I don't believe he's willing to spend a tremendous amount of political and actual capital to get them, and sacrifice his majority for them.

And to give Mitch the cover he'd need to bring those votes in without spending so much to get them, this would have had to have done way more damage in the House. No matter how long he drags it out in the Senate, and he will, his popularity won't go low enough for him to pull the trigger.

So I'm going with yours.

Burt, your reaction to this was a rational suggestion that it's meaningless, but I guarantee you that Hunter, Archer, Kerry, Chalupa, Hillary, Vindman, Schiff, and Pelosi's reaction was a sudden clenching of the sphincter muscles, and Swalwell-worthy rectal watery gasp. However, when Joe Biden was asked for comment he simply quipped, "I like pie."

No impeachment.
