The Morning Report - 11/20/19

klebbd.jpg

Good morning kids. Wednesday and for those of us living in the real world, the Democrats' case for impeaching and removing Trump from office collapsed like a wet pierogi yesterday when its star witness, the puffy Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman (in service of whose army he wears the uniform for still a topic for debate). I'll get to the particulars in a second but really, the most important thing to keep in mind that makes any and all of this utterly irrelevant is the transcript of the phone call between Presidents Trump and Zelensky was released about two weeks ago and there is nothing that was said that could even be remotely construed as an impeachable offense. Unlike the REO-Speedwagon-heard-it-from-a-friend-who-heard-it-from-a-friend mid level bureaucrats, traitors and flunkies who are just out and out liars with axes to grind, Lt. General Keith Kellog, who is Mike Pence's national security advisor was actually on the call and has confirmed zero impropriety. Period. Full stop.

But, for those still keen on fabulists, Majorette Bearclaw's testimony included admitting, much that it pained him to say so, that the President makes policy and it is not incumbent upon him to do what the State Dept. or others want, this after going to the NSC to bitch and moan about disagreeing with the President's Ukraine policy. Can you say "insubordination?" He claimed that he advised the Ukrainian President not to trust the Russians, despite later admitting that he never had a private one-on-one with him. In any case it would be funny if he did say something so moronic considering Russia had already annexed Crimea, and who the hell is this fat sack of lipids to give advice to anyone? He also claimed he heard the word "Burisma" mentioned on the call despite not being on the transcript but that that was not a significant omission (pfft!) and conceded that Hunter Biden had zero qualifications for the alleged position he held at that company and most crucially that despite not knowing who the alleged "whistleblower" is gave a very distinct impression that he, Vindman, was a key source of information in the actual whistleblower complaint. And that's when Schiff-for-Brains started banging the gavel like a crack-addicted chimpanzee playing drums for the Evolution Revolution.

Later on, it was the turn of former diplomat Kurt Volker to look like a jackass courtesy of Rep. Mike Turner:

..."So I get to ask you. You had a meeting with the President of the United States, and you believe that the policy issues he raised concerning Ukraine were valid, correct?"

"Yes," Volker said.

"Did the President of the United States ever say to you that he was not going to allow aid from the United States to go to the Ukraine unless there were investigations into Burisma, the Bidens, or the 2016 elections?" Turner asked.

"No, he did not," Volker said.

Turner then asked, "Did the Ukrainians ever tell you that they understood that they would not get a meeting with the President of the United States, a phone call with the President of the United States, military aid, or foreign aid from the United States unless they undertook investigations of Burisma, the Bidens, or the 2016 elections?"

"No, they did not," Volker said.

Turner noted that Volker's answers essentially dismantled the Democrats' entire case for impeaching Trump.

"Pretty much, Ambassador Volker, you just, like, took apart their entire case," Turner said.

So, okay. So far all of the so-called "star witnesses" who we were assured had the smoking gun evidence to remove Trump from office have only made the Democrats and the Media look like the real criminals in the eyes of the American people. More and more are finding this whole thing to be a sham and a hit job to take out Trump. This is turning into a titanic disaster for the Democrats no matter how you slice it. If they do impeach him in the House, which I am sure they are going to have to do, there is no way in hell the Senate will vote to convict. Even if you got a few of the probable defectors to vote with the Dems, the end result is Trump will have been found innocent in a trial, and that is a political disaster for Palsi and the party. Probably, it's a worse disaster than if she pulls the plug and enrages her base.

Beyond the politics of all this is the fact that individuals like Vindman, Volker, Yovanovitch as well as the other names we've come to know and loathe like Page, Strzok, McCabe, Ohr and all the rest represent a cancer on the republic. Vindman's actions and attitude underscore their belief that they control the direction of the nation, and not the people or the politicians they elect for a few years at a stretch. In the case of the State Department and the Intelligence Community, given all we have learned over the past three years and longer, America's national security would not be affected negatively in any significant way if the CIA, NSA and the State Dept. were simply abolished. In fact, you could argue that it would improve. And what of all the other federal agencies and departments that control our lives and issue edicts and rules that have the full effect of law, despite the fact that none of the people issuing them have ever been elected and its damned near impossible to fire them? Collectively, they have the same damned attitude of Vindman. It's a fatal conceit that is already having dire consequences on the body politic.

Anyway, links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.

Well, that's what the media will play up but if that's the case, why was/is Palsi desperate not to let this go to trial in the Senate?

Hint, we get to call all the witnesses we want and they will have to answer under oath. And even with Schiff for Brains controlling the show, look at all that has been revealed so far? The Senate will start digging into Hillary, Brennan, Obama and all of the shit that got us to this sorry state.

No way they want to do that, whatever the media will say.

27 A memo given to Fusion GPS in May 2016 includes information from Serhiy Leshchenko, a former journalist and Ukrainian lawmaker.

The memo could shed light on Fusion GPS contractor Nellie Ohr's testimony where she said Leshchenko was a source for Fusion, which is best known for its work on the Steele dossier.

The author of the memo suggested Leshchenko could be used as a "conduit" to publicize information about Paul Manafort.

Leshchenko, who has denied being a witting source for Fusion GPS, is best known for his role in publicizing the "black ledger," which purported to show illicit payments from Ukrainians to Paul Manafort.

Trump destroyed the plan. Now all they have are the witnesses with the transcript to refute any lie they try to make. But they have not option.

Well, no. They have already done that. They are not going to revote it.

Schiff's circus is over Thursday, and the House it out until first week of December.

After Schiff is through, the matter is turned over to Nadler's committee. So he has less than two weeks to get a bill of impeachment out of committee and to the floor of the House for a vote. (This is roughly the timeframe for the Clinton impeachment - the House voted the Bill the last voting day - December 19).

Christmas break I think represents a problem for the Dems - it will break their momentum.

135 "Medicare for All" and the Free Market

********

The notion that instituting Medicare for All will result in a free market option is, IMO, a flawed premise. The authors mention three entities.

1. Concierge or subscription-based practices
2. Specialty surgical centers
3. Medical tourism for care elsewhere.

The first two are relatively niche-oriented services (cherry picking) and their continued existence is predicated on the notion that the regulatory environment will remain static. But Medicare for All, by its very nature can only exist if everybody participates, and that will occur via a change in the regulatory machine. Licensing restrictions for doctors and certification restrictions for facilities have been talked about and implemented for years, on local and state levels, and will only tighten under a federal single payer system.

Medical tourism is not really a practical option for most citizens. The authors mention Mexican hospitals springing up to accommodate the hordes of care seekers. No way THAT could go wrong. /s

These are not really free market entities, they are more like black market entities.

affecting Google and Samsung smartphones, with the potential to impact
hundreds of millions of Android users, is the biggest to date. What did
the researchers discover? Oh, only a way for an attacker to take control
of smartphone camera apps and remotely take photos, record video, spy
on your conversations by recording them as you lift the phone to your
ear, identify your location, and more. All of this performed silently,
in the background, with the user none the wiser.

In retrospect, having lived through Watergate it was such a maximum shitshow of a derp state coup that every turncoat Repuke should've been tied to the whippin' post and had the flesh on his back turned to ribbons. But those were different times. Nixon was a lib weirdo who added the fucking EPA and was an economic retard. Trump has lifted the economy out of the eight year trough Gaylord put it into and having a job, particularly a well paying one, decreases a lot of "fuck this shit" sentiment.

156 The first two are relatively niche-oriented services (cherry picking) and their continued existence is predicated on the notion that the regulatory environment will remain static.

Posted by: Muldoon

.............

Medicare for All only works if doctors and hospitals are forced to take the reimbursement the government sees fit.

On the one hand, it is a good deal for hospitals, because they would never get stiffed on a big bill any longer.

I don't know if doctors can afford to stay in practice on only Medicare level reimbursements.

I suspect vast areas of rural America will have zero medical providers under Medicare for All.

This went on the whole time we were there. We had all the windows open in our room, etc. He had cranked it up to 90 in the middle of the night which we discovered yesterday when we woke up at 4 am unable to sleep because we were being broiled.

I don't think so. Rather, they would be capped at some arbitrarily determined level (i.e. Medicare rates or Medicare plus a few percentage points, but would lose private insurance reimbursements and self-pay patients, which is currently where hospitals make up for the revenue gap that Medicare rates create.

There may be some hospitals that thrive, but there will also be some that shut down.

230 We could save so much money if Medicaid patients were only allowed to visit urgent cares and get referred to hospitals if needed, as well as having a warehouse staffed by two or three government nurses for routine visits and any and all daytime concerns. Think DMV but in a salvation army store.

Want free healthcare? Enjoy. Don't want the night nurse making that call? Don't use Medicaid.

==

Special facilities for Medicaid patients. I like this idea, and I'd bet a whole gaggle of doctors who take Medicaid patients at depressed rates would agree. You like your gov't healthcare, here ya go. You want better? Many ways to do that for yourself. But a Medicaid-only facility of doctors and nurses...3...2...1...stigma!! We certainly couldn't have that now, could we?

246 The notion that instituting Medicare for All will result in a free market option is, IMO, a flawed premise. The authors mention three entities.

1. Concierge or subscription-based practices
2. Specialty surgical centers
3. Medical tourism for care elsewhere.

These are not really free market entities, they are more like black market entities.

Posted by: Muldoon at November 20, 2019 07:56 AM (m45I2)

There will be concierge and specialty clinics. The law will provide for these, but the only ones who can use them will be the well-connected. Buried in the law will be a provision for special and speedy care for critical public servants and for people who are deemed critical to the nation's economy, governance, and so forth. We all know this will happen and know how it will work.

Medical tourism for more than simple surgeries will not be affordable for anyone below upper middle class, due to the new explicit or hidden taxes everyone will be forced to pay. Disposable income for out-of-system medical will not be there for most.

Also:

How does medicare for all deal with dentistry? That could become pretty expensive.

Will plastic surgeons still be able to work, outside the Medicare for All regime? I expect so, and I expect many plastic surgery centers would become black market outlets for a lot of medical procedures and surgeries.

This guy says China has to invest 7 yuan in the economy, to get one yuan economic growth. Recall the left claiming when government puts one dollar in our economy, it has a multiplier effect of 1.7 or some such ... which may be true in certain cases, but is not an inflexible law like gravity. At some point "free money" breaks the economic concepts on labor and currency. China is an example.

He also says much of the economic power of Hong Kong has been moved to other regions inside (red) China, and the new generation in Hong Kong does not have a promising future ahead. He also sees other countries gaining economic power as China has many "issues", an aging population for one.

The Articles of Impeachment are already written, lacking only some details to be filled-in using info from depositions and public hearings to be completed within the next week. I do wonder how the Judiciary Committee and then Pelosi will proceed, while paying lip-service to fairness and the gravity of the situation. Will Nadler schedule a vote the day after the proposed Articles are published (pehaps the first day after the Thanksgiving recess), giving each committee member 5 minutes for public "debate?" How much time will Pelosi allot for debate in the full House? I'm sure Pelosi has all of this mapped-out, and I'm sure McCarthy will have few if any options to slow-up the steamroller.

Today's impeachment hearing could be a doozy. Sondland is the most controversial witness to come forward yet. Sondland amended his testimony, indicating there was a quid pro quo. But in text msgs w/acting Amb to Ukraine Taylor, Sondland indicated those suggestions were overplayed

Sondland was at the center of the now infamous "overheard phone call" where there were indications all Trump cared about was investigating the Bidens & not Ukrainian security

One big question today is will Sondland invoke a 5th Amendment shield? There are some here who believe Sondland may face potential criminal exposure. Remember that Sondland is a "Republican" witness.

He picked a fight with the Teacher's Unions because he was seriously trying to curb spending. There's a hard to swallow, long term lesson here that I think Trump gets, but most of us can't, yet. Anyone who seriously and diligently tries to cut spending that people have gotten used to is going to lose their next election. It's something that can only be done by someone who's just won re-election and who has 70% plus majorities in his legislature; without that, it's political death.

now I'm sure someone will point out that this means that long term, we're screwed. Well, yep - no argument there.

Only possible defense is to remember that we really are in a war for survival. In a war, you can only focus on winning. Of course you're going to be bankrupt when it's over, no way to win a war without throwing everything you have into it.

356 You know, the Star Trek TNG episode 'The Inner Light' is beautifully written, beautifully performed, beautifully shot and based on an utterly stupid central premise.

OK, so the Kataan civilization is about to be wiped out when their sun goes Nova. So, they launch a space probe with the purpose of injecting a lifetime of memories about their civilization into one person, who turns out to be Picard. With the end result that Picard has these memories and learns how to play the flute.

And... that's it. At the end of the episode, Riker tells Picard the probe shut down and there's nothing on it but a box with a flute inside. One guy holds the memory of their civilization. And then, what happens when Picard dies? Seems like there might have been other ways to preserve your civilization's memory.

Now, maybe they were counting on Picard to write a treatise on the Kataan Civilization, or maybe write a holodeck program about the little desert village where he lived in his memory. But then in the (much, much worse) season 7 episode Lessons, Picard doesn't even tell his girlfriend about Kataan. So, it seems unlikely he told anyone.

That's just always bugged me.

How much time will Pelosi allot for debate in the full House? I'm sure Pelosi has all of this mapped-out, and I'm sure McCarthy will have few if any options to slow-up the steamroller.

Thanksgiving recess starts this Friday afternoon. Schiff's phase of the impeachment ends tomorrow. Theoretically his committee writes up a report and sends evidence to Judiciary. House is not back to "work" until Tuesday, Dec 3.

So they have to draft the bill of impeachment and vote on it and then have it go to the floor. The Dems control all aspects of that, they can get it done in that timeframe. Dec 12 is last voting day of the year.

The leaky Whistleblower most certainly promised Scheiff he had seen the call transcript

LTC Memorex admits to trying to access the transcript in the secure server; others then did as well

Trump says he caught them, caught them all

If one wrote a spy novel on the deep state coup, no one would believe it as it's too brazen and incompetent.

The mere fact that Trump has survived the overwhelming forces against him suggests he is in the game counterattacking.

Did Trump leave a phony transcript for Vinderman or others to see?

363 The French elected the "conservative" Chirac to reign in spending and reduce the government Leviathan. When he tried to do it, they turned on him, they didn't mean their spending, they meant the other guy's spending. They elected Sarkozy to reign in spending and cut down the government Leviathan. When he tried to do it, they turned on him and said, "I don't mean spending on me, I mean spending on the OTHER guy!".
There is a reason Rand Paul was in single digits the Repubs had a presidential primary. Who is going to support him? This guy wants to cut our benefits and reduce government pay. Where do i sign up!

Yup.

That group here in KY spent every other week protesting Bevin instead of "teaching." Some issues about whether or not they should get paid for "protesting" while they should have been in the classroom were brought up. Lot's of noise about that.

Bevin pissed off all the right people and paid the price for it.

365 The Articles of Impeachment are already written, lacking only some details to be filled-in using info from depositions and public hearings to be completed within the next week. I do wonder how the Judiciary Committee and then Pelosi will proceed, while paying lip-service to fairness and the gravity of the situation. Will Nadler schedule a vote the day after the proposed Articles are published (pehaps the first day after the Thanksgiving recess), giving each committee member 5 minutes for public "debate?" I agree completely that this was the Plan all along. But... the absolute disaster of these public hearings has thrown a wrench into their finally laid out plans. Schiff had promised slam-dunk quid pro quo and bribery testimony; instead, he's got nothing. The 20 or 30 Dem House members in Trump districts are going to be key. It was easy to talk them into going along with "just an inquiry", but now? Especially when failure in the Senate is guaranteed?

As far as the idea of just having a general complaint, such as "abuse of power", the problem is that the Constitution calls for a Trial of Specific "High Crimes and Misdemeanors", based on specific charges. A general complaint won't meet Constitutional standards, and demands immediate dismissal with no trial at all.

Ronald D. Moore blamed the general episodic format of TNG for the lack of follow up. He specifically bemoaned the fact that by the next episode, Picard was back to his normal self.

But that was the bane of the episodic show. You don't have big emotional moments that affect characters for seasons on end. You have to return to normal by the next episode because if someone missed the last episode they won't feel lost.

But yeah, The Inner Light is probably the best episode of Star Trek. It's sad and gentle while also using a simple sci-fi hook to tell the story.

Is there a specific reason why some state hasn't seriously tried implementing a statewide voucher program?

I feel like it shouldn't actually be that hard of a sell. Put up a figure showing what the state is currently spending per kid per year on schools. Declare that that amount is instead going to be directed into a voucher that the parents get to pick the school.

Do the teachers unions have some sort of contract that the state has guaranteed that they're going to be getting some amount of money in perpetuity or something?

So true. Whether you like Bevin or not, he was trying to hold the line on spending. Where exactly do the voters think that money will come from? Do they think Democrats have some magic beans that are going to foot the bill? It coming from taxpayers in some form. Oh and news flash. They are not taking it from some other program or the rich.

The concept of budgeting and finite resources just does not compute with the people who voted for the Democrat.

Kinda. I mean, here is what the Constitution says, and everyone loves saying that High Crimes and Misdemeanors means whatever the House says it does. And this why they are saying "bribery" now, because it is actually in the Constitution.

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

A legal technicality that may be relevant - while the President is the Commander in Chief, the Constitution specifically states that this is a Civilian position, and the President holds no military rank. Even Eisenhower never appeared in uniform after he became President. Therefor UCMJ does *not* apply to any President, just as it does not apply to any other civilian.

420 On that "Move to Amend" article. -- "[Corporations] shall have no rights under this Constitution." but--
[Section 3] Nothing in this amendment shall be construed to abridge freedom of the press."

As if "The Press" is some ordained priesthood, made up only of the ordained institutions of Leftist Agitprop, and certainly not including the deplorable blogger.

The article notes the power of government and unions, versus the counterbalancing power gained from Citizens United. Another really big power group is the Foundations ... billionaires shovel billions tax free through, but then maintain command and control for political and social justice power. And on the the lower levels, use them for more nefarious money laundering as with the Clinton Foundation.

But the mega-power of the Ford Foundation and 1000 like them is immeasurable, and most are leftist in nature. Our future is being determined behind closed doors, and subsidized as the oligarchs run foundations tax free, with their own agenda. It is why Soros can pour millions into certain races, or into various leftist agitprop outlets (e.g. Media Matters, and Beck had a list of 100+ such groups tied to Soros ... an agitprop army)

The X Files tried to walk that tightrope by alternating stand-alone monster episodes with the overarching mythology episodes, with middling success.

I like the idea, but network executives don't really understand what works and doesn't work for maintaining an audience. One thing they are convinced works is keeping actors around.

So, Star Trek Discovery was supposed to be, originally, different seasons dealing with different time periods of Starfleet with different casts, but the network shut that down early and we got the incomprehensibly bad product we can all enjoy to ignore today.

I am not saying that they are going to charge him under UCMJ - just that they could use that as justification for a "general article." Borrow some of the wording.

The Constitution doesn't require anything specific so they can do what they want. They have always known the Senate won't convict.

So they will vote generic stuff and then use "defense of Trump" as a weapon against Republicans.

Unfortunately, enough Republicans are weak kneed enough to say "no I am not defending Trump...."

IIRC the turnout was very good as you can look at the others down the ticket that won big. Old Matt sowed his own bed by continuing to beat down the teachers (and rightly so IMHO) by publically calling them names over and over and over. He alienated the teachers union, many teachers, their families and even their relatives. I'm not saying they voted for fucking Besher but they sure didn't vote for old Matt even though Donnie Two Scoops did his best to pull him up from the depth of a 20% lag to losing by less than 5K votes.

Good thing is that there is a republican super majority in the Kentucky House and Senate which 'should' prevent a complete 180 but WTF do I know.

Yes, all his early victories had elements of corruption. Let's be honest: one of the reasons Gaylord won, aside from "HISTORICAL FIRST" was that he was a fresh new face and not one of the ossified careerist turds in Washlincoln. Who in their right minds would vote for one of them? I'm cheap as hell but I'd pay cash money for an opportunity to horsewhip Chuck Schoooomer, for example. And who did the Top Men run against him but two decrepit losers who everyone hated, Juan Keating McTraitor and Mutt Rombley. Sarah Palin, the only other fresh new face, generated the only other positive upswing.

That's also why we have Trump. People across the country don't like the shitheads the Uniparty litters the legislature with.

Made in the Soviet Union, the filmmakers were granted access to the Soviet army to stage the battle scenes. They're some of the grandest ever filmed (I really mean that, they're fantastic).

Bondarchuk, the director who also played Boris, really understood the material as well. The girl who plays Natasha, a former ballerina, is absolutely divine, and the burning of Moscow is one of the greatest single sequences I've seen in film.

It does require a certain familiarity with the book, though, which I read right before watching.

477 Morning fellow Morons. In case you're curious about the why the Donk down here in LA won the Gov. race I have some articles for your perusal. The first of 6 articles is linked in the description. Short answer: "naive (bullshit more like stupid or didn't give a shit)" businessman hired a bunch of out of state consultants to run his campaign who proceeded to piss off local political hands, mismanage his campaign, and grift their client out of millions. The reason I disagree with Scott McKay assessment of Rispone as naive (article 6 I think) is Rispone's background: He's been involved in the oil business in LA since the 70's. No fucking way he's THAT naive about state politics. I suspect this was pure vanity for him and he didn't give a shit, which was the vibe he gave off to me from day 1. Either that or he's so fucking stupid that he let a bunch of grifter "consultants" take him for a ride, in which case, he really doesn't have any business running the state. So, yeah, LA ain't turning purple.

478 475 In contrast, the Rick and Morty Season 4 premier jammed at least 2 1/2 episodes of plot into a single episode.

==========

The second episode felt weird until the end when the thematic connection between the three stories became clear. I think I'll like it more on a second viewing.

479 Of course, after the BSG reboot Ron Moore can certainly talk about not following through on plot lines. Special destiny what?

They never had a plan. They made it up as they went along, just like happened with Lost. Still shoulda just stopped at mid-season 4.

480 I think it would be harder to make a compelling television show than a compelling movie.

Isn't that a little like saying it's harder to make a series than a single novel?

Sometimes your story needs more than 2-3 hours to tell. Game of Thrones would have been terrible in it's entirety if it were just a movie.

482 The UCMJ includes article 133, Conduct Unbecoming, which is often called the "catch all" article in military law.

Article 134 basically states anything not covered in the previous articles is covered here.

Pixy has frequently forgiven my fuckups on not closing a tag. Maybe that's compensation for past randomly shutting off my access or lack of preview.

484 " I've already seen Lefties spouting off about how rural people will have to suffer because they've chosen to live there; if they want accessible care, then move to the cities, you inbred hicks. "

Good one.

Now do "If urban people are suffering from excessive violence and crime, they just need to suffer, due to their choice to live there".

486 The left wouldn't be pouring money into Elise Stefanik's opponent, if Elise wasn't important. Smart, young, quick-witted. Ignoring her bc she isn't local seems illogical. I think it's great she's currently the face of an R party that needs to woo suburban women. She's very much worth supporting.

488 Notice how they are pulling Rudy into the show! Soon Rudy will be main attraction along with Roger Stone. They plan to cement the Russian Hoax with a final report, impeachment and removal of Trump.
