Not permanently, but making it possible, with the goal of this command center shifting to SC for 8hrs of every 24 hours. Good call considering that Qatar is actively undermining our democracy by spreading money around DC and also cozy with Islamic terror groups.

Posted by: DocJ

Yeah, he has said more than once that he's thinking about retiring. IIRC, he and his wife want to drive around the country and see the sights. Probably easier to do that when you're in your 70's than when you're in your 80's, although I guess it depends on what quality of health the person enjoys. I've known some pretty active 80-somethings.

And since we don't really know the state of Thomas' health, I'll leave it to him to decide when it's right to retire. Imagine if Thomas retired tomorrow, and Trump replaced him with a 54-year old who had a heart attack and died just after the 2020 or (hopefully) the 2024 elections, and was replaced by a lefty loon appointed by the next Dim president. Then Thomas lives, with full mental faculties, to be 105 or something.

Just because somebody is younger, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be around longer. We just never know.

It never goes away.. Alex Trebek is fighting it hard, but he's had a couple of relapses.

wait.. I just found the quote about her treatment:

"The tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body," the statement said. "Justice Ginsburg will continue to have periodic blood tests and scans. No further treatment is needed at this time."

That doesn't say it is gone.. it just says it didn't spread.. so, I'm betting she still has pancreatic cancer.

And talk about irony.. if she had not had that fall last year, they never would have found the lung cancer.

328 293 Civil wars require organized fighting groups or groups that have ready potential to organize fighters.
Name me 2 groups that are organized to do this which aren't already either part of the government (i.e. antifa in liberal cities, or the collection of feds that make up the "KKK") or didn't just reform after some kind of fall-out, which happens every month or two. (There's a good example recently, the 'Traditionalists Workers Party')
I won't hold my breath! My town can hardly organize itself to decide whether a maglev train is a good idea and to get people to actually not let English Ivy take over every tree. It's not going to marshall a force of 100 riflemen who can execute upon light infantry tactics sufficient for resisting a similarly equipped force. I can't think of what other organizations might - the Masons? The Elks? The Rotary club?

It'll take a government collapse before any such groups can reasonably form, unless they really are criminal (i.e. gangs and mafias.)

351 340 My contention is that to develop these capabilities either requires one to be acting outside the law (basically, become a mafia) which risks all of the negative externalities of criminality, including incurable insanity (the criminal mind!) Or it requires one to already be intergrated into the current governance structure either because one has been infiltrated by feds or because one is part of a local government.

It begins with states levying various tariffs and embargoes on each other. The federal government does not intervene or is too impotent to when it tries. So the first iteration is relatively cohesive states skirmishing over things like water rights and escalating to large alliances.

Don't extrapolate from the present circumstances. Assume something has happened, and reason backward to the present day to figure out how it could have happened.

In this case, antifa gets even more fulminant, and another group decides they want a piece of antifa. Sides form up, and voila! Street battles lead to civil war.

______________

Building more de-salination plants would solve CA's water issues. The entire state borders the Pacific, so water should be the least of its worries. But those de-sal plants require lots of energy to run, and release lots of carbon emissions, so it probably won't happen.

Posted by: TrivialPursuer at November 13, 2019 02:23 PM (k4dH2)

368 >>> Maybe that's why the new Disney Star Wars Land is a dud.

It's a dud because Bob Iger is cheap. Refuses to pay Lucas royalties on the original trilogy characters, so the new land focuses on the newer trilogy characters and worlds, the ones that nobody loves or connects to.

But hey, you can buy the gross blue milk as an overpriced drink there, yay!

369 Building more de-salination plants would solve CA's water issues.

Those never seem to quite live up to their promise: very expensive, break down a lot, etc. Still, a better choice than buying water from nearby countries or sucking the Colorado River dry.

Posted by: Puddin Head at November 13, 2019 02:40 PM (yRAFu)

381 360 How, though? What part of the city do antifa or - the Proud Boys(?) - control? This focusing on the fighting is pure cargo cult. Warfare is primarily about two things: control of assets, and control of information. The fighting part of war is just the flashy part of resolving conflicts concerning those. What is the substantial conflict which will be shifted by antifa and the proud boys fighting? Will one look better on TV and therefore win the support of Pigtown?

In the past if a vanguard (say someone like antifa) is trying to take over the city by fighting the police, it's either because their political party has decided street violence might work (this fails) or because a foreign power has been convinced to use them as a proxy to flip the local government. Look up the "Iron Law of Rebellious Tools" for more.

I can't reason backwards from something I find to be a fantasy, unless I'm writing a novel.

That's basically how my dad went. Septic shock after after aspirating reflux from a feeding tube. Lasted maybe 24 hrs after nurses noticed he had vomited.
