Hillary Clinton: Running for President in 2020 is Not "Part of My Plans," But "Never Say Never"

She's running.

Or: She's shuffling awkwardly and sadly. And falling down stairs, and being thrown into the back of a van like a Mexican kidnap victim.

I'll take it.

Hillary Clinton says she's under "enormous pressure" to consider a 2020 White House bid but it's "absolutely not" part of her plans right now.

"As I say, never, never, never say never," Clinton told BBC Radio 5 Live host Emma Barnett when asked Tuesday if she was ruling out another political run. "I will certainly tell you, I'm under enormous pressure from many, many, many people to think about it," the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee continued.

Meanwhile, the Beast's 2008 campaign strategist, Mark Penn, also says he thinks she might embarrass herself again.

It's not too late for Hillary Clinton to enter the race for the Democratic nomination just as Michael Bloomberg did, her former strategist says.

Mark Penn, who served as a chief strategist and pollster during Clinton’s failed 2008 presidential campaign, thinks his former boss could still jump in at this late stage.

'There’s still a couple of days here,' Penn told Fox News.

'I don't know whether [Clinton will] look at the Michael Bloomberg thing and say, "The field's too crowded now. I missed my opportunity," or the opposite.

Dick Morris is saying the same thing, but he hasn't advised the Clintons since the 90s.

I think Hillary wants to run but the problem is, see, no one else does. The people she'd usually tap to run her campaign are running other people's, and the money people are giving her the cold shoulder, and Democrat graybeards are counselling her to pack it in.

She wants to, though.

I think she wants to win but she does not want to risk losing a third time. She'll run if she can see a clear path to victory, but right now that path does not look good. The problem is if she waits too long there may be no path at all.

Right now her best path is probably to sit tight and silently run without making a formal announcement.

I know she wants the job, but she doesn't want to campaign, she's always hated "retail politics" because she's a psychopath who hates fellow humans. But if she can work out some way in which she ends up being the candidate at the last minute she'll take it.

She's hoping the Dem field will be so weak and that Trump will have been done in by impeachment, that the party (and the country) will come calling asking her to be the savior. Its unlikely to happen, but if I were her, I'd hope for that scenario. Because getting rejected by your party and the American people for a 2nd time is not a good way to go.

The problem is severalfold. First, Warren polls badly, and polls worse the more exposure she gets. The progs DO love Warren, but no one else does.

Second, Wall Street probably now takes her populist "let's jack up the rich" rhetoric at face value, and isn't coughing up to the Dems. The DNC is broke, in fact, in debt, and it needs every dime it can get.

The confluence of those two things militate strongly against Warren, I suspect. If the Dems are going to lose anyway, why not nominate someone who can at least help replenish the coffers at the DNC? And bugger the progs; there aren't enough of them, or enough money among them, to make a difference. After all, the tail don't wag the dog.

The wild card is her advisors. Having farted off sound advice last time, she may give more credence to, e.g., Bill's advice than she did heretofore. And Bill's a lot savvier than she is.

Two reasons to move the California primary (which has been talked about for 40 years): first, as you note, to get a hard-left nominee.

The subsidiary reason: to give Kamala Sutra Harris a boost.

275 ie: Civil War - There's a fascinating story going on that no one in this country is paying attention to, which is a shame because it's really amazing - the Bolivian situation. It's an answer to the question, "What would civil war look like if it broke out in a modern society?" That's where Bolivia is, today.

The old commie President Morales tried to fake an election and make himself President for Life - amazingly, the Bolivian's wouldn't stand for it and after 3 weeks of choas and riots in every city, Morales ordered the Army to intervene - but the Army said "nope, you're on your own, buddy."

So then the crowds grew really ugly, burned down the VP's house, and Morales and most of his top officials resigned and are believed to be fleeing to Mexico. The "Second Vice President of the Senate" is attempting to take charge, because everyone higher then her in the existing government in on the run. Meanwhile, anti-Morales forces are out building road barricades, while pro-Morales demonstrators are building and burning road barricades in the areas that they control. The Army is still refusing to get involved, there is no functional authority anywhere in the country, and no one knows what comes next.

My guess is that the Generals are going to be forced to assume control, whether they want it or not.

307 Zorro is a really fun book, its well told and a bit more down to earth than you'd expect from the themes. People think its terribly old hat now and derivative but instead its one of those stories which others have derived and stolen from so much that now it seems old hat.

So much so that Hollywood hasn't done a remake since 1940. There were serials and a TV series, there was a (very fine) Italian version made in 1975, but Hollywood hasn't touched the story in over 70 years. They did a sequel of sorts, with Antonio Banderas which was, meh.

So now they are thinking about a Zorro movie, but again, its not the original story, its some girl named Zora (which, I'm told, is slang for er, girl bits in South America, so she's Pussy Galore sort of).

The Cadillac of Governors, "Coupe" Deval Patrick (D-MA), actually worries me more than anyone else in the field so far. Still, he's never really been in a competitive campaign - he beat Rmoney's Lt. Gov. in '06 which was a tough year for Republicans and pretty much cruised to re-election against Chahlie Bakah (yeah, the current DIABLO Governor).

--------

Maybe, or maybe not.

It's LatAm, so - probability of that is high.

But look at it from a theoretical standpoint, outside of traditionally strongarm dictatorships in the Southern Hemisphere.

In the modern world, federal governments are a chimera... we all pretend they keep things running down the track, when in fact it's illusory. They exist to stuff their corrupt pockets and buy votes, while achieving virtually none of their stated goals.

This is a point brought up by the right during every government shutdown, and it's why shutdowns are always partial these days. They just can't have people know that they don't really fucking do anything besides pump out welfare checks.

The only people who will miss them in the short term are the destitute welfare recipients, and the rest of us don't need them for very much, and are merely encumbered by them.

So in the event of breakdown of federal authority, as long as local governments remain in operation, there are all kinds of possible peaceful outcomes - new elections being one.

Or look at Thailand, for instance.

They had a stretch of many years where there was effectively no national authority with any stability or authority whatsoever. And, what happened? The permanent civil service at the local level continued doing their jobs, the Thai people continued on living their lives, and everyone outside of the political parties simply shrugged at the internecine chaos in the government.

506 275 ie: Civil War - There's a fascinating story going on that no one in this country is paying attention to, which is a shame because it's really amazing - the Bolivian situation.

I recall dimly the Disney series of the early '60s with Guy Williams -- yes, the father later of the Robinson family in Lost in Space. As Don Diego, he wore a thin little David Niven-lite mustache -- and he was dynamite. Those white teeth flashing below that black mask as he whirled his sword to slash "Z" across your shirt!

Marx, I think it was, had an action figure of Zorro with his black horse Tornado, with detachable sword and cape and mask and hat. I remember that better than the show.

Something I noticed about political punditry many years ago: nobody really cares about wrong predictions. Sure, you get "Punditry Points" for stuff you get right of course, but you get **MORE** points for creative predictions that drive discussion even if they're eventually proven wrong. Because this is the real point of political punditry: to fill TV time and column space. The News Maw must be fed.
