Let me repeat my thanks to all those who served and are serving honorably.

It hurts deeply to include the caveat honorably.

Honorably should be an absolute given.

The thank you needs to include those who patiently wait for the warrior, much too often they are not included.

35 At my adult Sunday School class last week, the President of the class opened it by asking Vets to raise their hands.

Now, it's a large class, approximately 50 people total, with attendance normally running about 30 people. I've been a member of this class for over 20 years.

I know everyone fairly well, though not really socially. Most are a little older than I am. While I knew that a couple of others are veterans, as we share inter-service insults, I was very surprised to see eight guys raise their hands, which turns out to be right on the money demographically.

I looked it up, and here are the data: https://tinyurl.com/yablv67y

40 The only person to thank Pooky today for his service was the one guy in the factory he's publicly clashed with. But the guy has been trying to make amends, so it was appreciated. Plus I got to slip in that Pooky has literally saved the world a few times, which helps him remember the GOOD times he had in the USAF.

55 I got a draft notice in late 67 as I recall and enlisted in the NAV in EARLY 68, got out in LATE 70 and the 'lifers' who were mostly WW II vets said 'you'll be back' to which I said 'no effing way'. They were right and I was wrong. Those salty bastards were the backbone on the Navy as I suppose was the case in other branches, and you know what? That is probably the case today, as it has always been. It really takes a special kind of person (around 1 percent of the population) to hold up their hand during wartime (or anytime), and I am so proud to have spent my career drinking and skating in the company of better men. God, I love you people. That ain't just the Ezra Brooks talking.

78 They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBPSr4TsQkI

In memory of my long late Grandfather, who was on the battlefield on Nov 11, 1918.
Died 20 years before I was ever born. I think with the passing of my uncle (his son) a few years ago, there is no one now alive who actually knew him.

Who will remember him when my generation is gone? His grave along with his wife's grave alongside (my grandmother) and my parents will slip into forgetfulness.

We chose, except for the draftee, our task. We stood our watch. Some better than others, but we stepped up, and were the insurance policy for peace between Great Powers.

Incidentally, I have a gimmick that prevents loss of the poppy caused by the stickpin from sliding out of one's garment. Take the black center of the poppy and glue it to some small lapel pin, the kind that has a stud on the back like a thumbtack, with a locking clasp for it. Insert glued-up pin through the original hole in the poppy, pass it through the fabric of you garment, and apply the clasp.

97 My grandpa, who turned 90 yesterday, is a Korean War vet. When I was a kid and asked him sometimes about how it was, he said there was nothing really to tell; he drove a truck the whole time and that was it, only thing worth mentioning about Korea was it smelled terrible. So I always let it go at that.

Year or two ago, his mind's starting to wander more in his old age, he got to talking about Korea for some reason, and just casually mentioned getting shot at while making a delivery. One of those classic double-take moments for me.

So (and I'm sure everyone else already knows this) I guess the lesson is, just because a vet says there's nothing worth telling about his experiences, doesn't mean nothing happened.

Salute to all.

I never met him. He married a French girl, brought her to America, and went on to have 2 other wives in 4 total marriages. Sequentially, for the Catholic faith that was in him.

My father had a stunning 28 years in the service, rising to being selected as a CDR LDO. He retired without that honor, retiring to avoid the then law on dual compensation ban. He was the greatest man I ever knew.

I dunno. I saw this posted at another site, and thought it was very touching gesture. But somebody commented about not needing "Yanks" on Remembrance Day (a C-47 Dakota with US Army Air force markings) and somebody else about what a mess 750K poppies would make. Where they plastic?
An old WWII vet was along for the ride in the Dakota, he was something like 94.

My great grandfather came to the US alone, I've often wondered if he knew his brother had died, I've heard there was little communication to the family back home. The brother was in the 5th Wiltshires. If I read the the records correctly he actually survived Gallipoli before going to Iraq.

133 Thanks to all of our vets and active military for their service!
I was Vietnam era and got a lucky lottery number of 320 while in college. My bro did 2 tours there (one he re-upped - I think that is the phrase.. nutball) and other bro was in the air force at the time.
I had too many friends come back all eff'd up.. woulda enlisted in Air Force or Navy if I had been drafted..

Yet.. I honor each and every one of them that served. Their country called, and they answered. It was shameful the way our guys were treated coming home..
So, when I see a post on Twitter, etc,, that says "Happy Veterans Day", I wince..nothing "happy" about it.. it is a remembrance.

According to a report Monday evening in Politico, the proposal could cover both American military and humanitarian assistance.

Citing "two White House officials," Politico cautioned that the proposed executive order is in the early drafting stages with many of the important details still up in the air.

Yes, this is a big national holiday in France. The Great War affected them terribly, as they lost so many men, and most of the war was fought in France and wrecked a lot of the north and northwest of the country.

You may think of the French as cowards and wimps, but I wonder what this country would be like if 1/4 of it was literally wrecked by war and so many men were killed by a war that came to kind of an indecisive conclusion.

A man I know from mutual interest in antiques was a Korean War vet too and made light of it for years. Out of the blue this summer, he apparently needed to talk and told me at length about the severe cold in 1950 and showed me some frostbite damage and told me how horrible the pain was when things were healing. Prior to that day he smiled and acted as if nothing happened the whole time he was there.

179 Nine Line headquarters here had a Vets Day celebration Saturday. Son went with a female army vet friend, and they were the first two on a Huey ride.

They both sat in gunners seats, and son said it was extremely windy, cold, and noisy. The pilot got a little sporty, which they thought was fun.

Son said it was the smoothest copter ride he ever had, though.

I am proud that my fathers and his brothers served in WWII (and my mom's eldest brother), that her two younger ones served during Korea, that many cousins served in the 60s and 70s and that some of their sons and daughters served in the Gulf Wars and in Afghanistan.

I was pleased to see so many people donating and wearing poppies today when I went out on errands, but was sad to notice that this group included very few of our community's newer additions.

And to the others commenting about not being worthy of our sacrifice, well from my standpoint if you live your life well, carry out your duties as a citizen and generally try to leave this country/state/town better than you found it, then you are fully worthy. In fact, that is the reason for the sacrifice.

Whole lot of us Veterans here in these grey boxes. And I salute each and every one of you, and hold you in the highest possible regard.

Thank YOU, one and all.

Whole lot more of us Veterans, lie beneath the earth, in their black and lonely boxes, evermore.

Visit them, touch their tombstones, linger a bit in their presence, if you will?

Eternity will duly note your reverence and respect.

Our historical society that I work for had a program not so long ago about guys who fought in the second world war whose fathers had fought in the Civil War. It seems some old vets were attractive prospects for young girls because of their pensions and they had kids late in life. It was interesting this teacher had his kids research and they found 8 examples.

204 From the end of the last thread:

> I've never done sci-fi cons, but I understand that back in the day, they were pretty wild.
Used to be.
Now they've all been taken over by communist feminazis.

A friend of mine had helped run and had worked on the local science fiction convention for decades.

A couple of years ago, he made a comment on a panel at the convention that triggered a feminazi snowflake, who filed a formal complaint.

The board of the convention, considering the many years that the guy had worked on the convention, was merciful - they merely required that my friend issue an abject apology for his terrible non-politically correct statement.

My friend: "No, I'm not going to apologize."
The board: "What do you mean, you're not going to apologize?"
My friend: "I mean that I'm not going to apologize."
The board: "But your work is so valuable here - we need you."
My friend: "I'm not going to apologize."

So that's that. I fully expect the science fiction convention to go out of business in a few years. Hard to get people to shell out a fair amount of money for an entertainment event run by left-wing humorless scolds.

209 You may think of the French as cowards and wimps, but I wonder what this country would be like if 1/4 of it was literally wrecked by war and so many men were killed by a war that came to kind of an indecisive conclusion.

In WW2 there was also the issue of the British Army getting itself outflanked so hard it couldn't help much. A look at a map has Dunkirk on the French/Belgian border. The screwups were not all on the French side.

Most of my cousins lean left but they all thanked him for his service. It was amazing. He was the uncle that used to call me a candy rabbit when I whined as a kid. I love that man.

My late uncle served in Europe in WWII, and he thought they were unreliable too, having seen them..."in action".

The French Army at the start of the war was sometimes a tough bunch. They courageously fought a holding action outside of Dunkirk to allow the British to get their army off the beaches and back home....to continue the fight.

I don't think I'd put on the uniform again for what this country has become. My loyalties have changed - after decades of assault by the domestic enemy's that I swore an oath to defend against - aka the Democratic Party. My loyalties now are to God, my family, my friends and to all fellow patriots, REGARDLESS of their color or gender or creed or whateverthefuckever. The only thing that matters to me is what's in their hearts and if their hearts believe in the America that I grew up in - blemishes and all... blemishes that through all of our history we have struggled to make amends for - then they are my brothers and sisters. To the end.

To all the rest...Shame on you and may the devil take the hindmost.

My WWII vet father and uncles said little about their experiences. After my parents split up, my uncle wanted to let me know a little about what the war was like and showed up on campus one afternoon and dragged me out of a class to see "A Bridge Too Far". My father was part of that battle, and although it didn't focus on the American forces, he thought the scenes about Arnhem would help me to understand what he (and the uncles who served in Europe) had seen. You can't imagine the professor's shock at being told I was leaving to see a movie, but later he said that his own father was part of the Occupation forces after the war

268 Heard a story waiting in Heathrow Airport a decade ago from an older couple from Vancouver flying to visit one of their kids in Israel.

The husband somehow managed to get out of Czechoslovakia ahead of the Holocaust, emigrated to Canada, and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot. One of the reasons why he signed up is that you qualified for Canadian citizenship more rapidly if you were in the service.

So, he was qualified to become a citizen, and had to attend a court hearing where a judge interviewed a group of potential citizens regarding their suitability to become Canadian citizens.

At the urging of his buddies, he wore his dress RCAF uniform to the hearing. The judge came in, started the hearing, looked at the guy, and said: "I guess I don't have to lecture you on your obligations to Canada."

The Ayatollah Khomeini called Paris home before he went back to Iran after the fall of the Shah to initiate the world's greatest terror regime.

They withdrew from NATO in the '60's and subsequently didn't pull their weight during much of the Cold War.

They collaborated with Nazi Germany in WWII freeing up countless German divisions for employment elsewhere. And as a side-note were an inspiration for today's GOP which is better known as the Vichy Republican Party. Heh,

Posted by: Le Garde Vieux at November 11, 2019 10:54 PM (ms2Wv)

306 @304 Ok pally, here we go. When you get to decide for yourself when the country is worth fighting for, you are calling anyone who has a later or current commitment a sucker. You are putting your personal judgement above theirs. You are saying you are a better patriot than all the others who have put on the uniform. Now you will say that this is not what you said, but you would be wrong. And you do not get to say that.

Additionally, the really special part, is that you also deny anyone else at any other time to come to the same conclusion you claim is valid for you to make. This is just incredibly extra-terrestrial, as you want to put it. IF it is all right to quail from defending the country because another party is in the majority, you do not get to condemn others for doing the same thing.

Anyone who currently has a commitment to the defense of the nation, or has family or friends in that position, is insulted by your drunken rant. You are speaking as a fool. Read this again when you are sober.

Regulars will note that I have not descended to mere name-calling.
It is wrong to allow someone to carry on this way without a challenge.
This poor man is having an ethical breakdown, and he deserves a loving smack up alongside the head from his friends here (as if he had any), and an invitation to work on his drinking etiquette.
