Wyeth Billy Bones.jpg

Billy Bones
Newell Convers Wyeth

Okay, I'll admit it. These paintings (illustrations?) scared me. I read my dad's old copy of Treasure Island when I was a kid, and it had the original art...

Posted by: JAS at November 08, 2019 09:22 AM (DBGf/)

My dear British mum, who I've mentioned before, had lots of weird and irrational fears as a little girl. She was scared of being shanghaied; she was scared of being forced to be a "powder monkey" on a British warship; and she was terrified of someone giving her a Black Spot like in "Treasure Island."

I think my mom's parents exposed her to a bit too much British naval history and fiction as a baby.

I want to find a really nice version of Treasure Island for when Baby MWR is born. He'll be too young to read it, but I'd like him to have it in his library so I can read it to him and then he can read it as he gets older. It's one of those books I think every child, especially every little boy, should read at least once.

YES IT DOES.
I only call it irrational because my fear tends to extend to deep water of any kind, even fresh water and (embarrassingly enough) pools. I saw "Jaws" when I was too young and my wee brain decided any time my feet aren't touching the bottom of whatever body of water I'm in, that means there's a shark there waiting to eat me.

I'm kind of obsessed with Andrew Wyeth so as a result I've read a couple of biographies of Newell Convers and went to see an exhibition of his at the Brandywine this summer.

He just lacks something. He kept trying and trying to be taken seriously as an artist and the effort showed and it didn't work. Andy seemed determined to please only himself and it resulted in the best American art.

People fear what they don't understand. We spend enormous amounts of money of space exploration and relatively little on understanding the oceans that cover the vast majority of our planet.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Just All about the Billy Wilder movies at November 08, 2019 09:36 AM (q80AH)

My feet touch the floor in a shower. And a bath!

Honestly though, as I got older I started thinking about how the blue whale is the biggest animal ever to roam the earth. Bigger than the dinosaurs. Yet even though there is MORE THAN ONE blue whale in the world's oceans, you wouldn't know you were above one until it drifted up to the surface and breeched at you.
That honestly freaked me out more than the sharks. Which is why I hate going out past my knees at the ocean.

My fear of fresh water I like to think was SLIGHLTY more justified, since we had snapping turtles in the lake near where I lived growing up. Nothing like losing a toe to a snapper to really ruin a summer vacation.

124 CBD, Thank you, thank you!!

Treasure Island was one of the first 'real' books I read and those Wyeth illustrations were a huge attraction. (The only one that scared me was the one of Blind Pew groping along the lane with the sea wind blowing that cloak out like a billowing sail.)

The backgrounds are fairly realistic but are muted compared to the figures and their actions. Those are in more solid tones and brighter colors. Not too subtle, the skin tones are almost melodramatic but that fits with the action he is illustrating.

Wyeth's paintings are so effective because they capture the attention of young viewers and still excite their older selves with a combination of nostalgia and greater appreciation for their effectiveness.

Thanks again, CBD. What a great painting to end the week.

145 If you read anything at all today, read this; by Kim Strassel

"Eric Holder Takes Virginia"

https://tinyurl.com/y697vvgh

"Democrats on Tuesday won total control of Virginia's government., adding both chambers of the General Assembly to the governor's mansion. They will redraw Virginia's legislative district lines after next years census. The Old Dominion was already moving left, though the redistricting power likely cements Democrats dominance over Virginia for the next 10 years. "

"...The NDRC spent its first years aggressively litigating legislative maps it didn't like, to great success. Virginia's election was the first test of the electoral piece on Mr. Holder's strategy, and now it will serve as the model by which Democrats attempt to gain redistricting power in 11 other key states next year. "

And by the way, Democrat control has also meant they loaded up the state bench with lackey judges. With SCOTUS basically ceding any responsibility on this issue to state courts, they are allowing this tyranny to proceed and have essentially handed legislative power to the judicial branch.

It is underrated. Timothy Dalton made an excellent Bond, esp. after Roger Moore's light take on the role. When Dalton whipped out his gun, you knew Bond was going to use it and someone was going to get dead. And the plot, as I recall, was tricky, reflecting the kind of the ruses and games real intelligence services run on each other.

At the time, the media all clamored that the film emphasized the new "non-player" attitude in society, i.e., thanks to AIDS, people were once again tending to stick to one partner at a time. Maybe; but in the novels Bond was almost always involved with only one girl at a time. Goldfinger was an exception.

People often ask why Mitch McConnell gets so much hate. Things like this is why. The Republican Party has filed a complaint, causing a pretty popular local sports radio guy - Matt Jones - to be removed from his show. Jones was considering a challenge to McConnell. This will not play well in the state of Kentucky. I don't know that it'll cost McConnell his seat - but it'll make that run much closer that it needed to be.

Then, in a call with the new Ukrainian president - a call which, just to remind everyone, we have the fucking transcript for - Trump asks the Ukrainians to look into Gropey's claims because "it looks really bad" (or something similar)

And this, in the eyes of the left, is grounds for Article I of the Impeachment of Donald J. Trump.

No. Did they increase ICE funding to increase deportations or legislate against this sanctuary BS? No. Did they repeal 0care? No. Is he going to use impeachment to leverage his ability to force amnesty and get more and more H1Bs? Probably.

RE VA GOP. Unfortunately, most state parties are essentially dysfunctional and resemble HR departments. They are there to discourage volunteers and potential candidates who are not the "right sort", channel work to a curated list of approved strategists, media consultants, campaign managers, and financing. Essentially, the state parties have hollowed out the organizations by outsourcing everything and serve mainly to keep folks like the deplorables away from any power within the party and to please wealthy donors. County level often has the people who are interested in making connections for resume and marketing with a couple of people that are striving to rise to state level offices in the party. The classic line, Nobody wants nobody that nobody sent" from Chicago politics represents party offices at the local level.

The only exceptions occur in dismal places like Chicago or Dem dominated states, etc. where the party is so atrophied that they need warm bodies and cannot afford to be picky.

Self-sustaining includes the ability to make its own toilet paper.

As for population, probably at least 10,000 if we expect it to be able to maintain current technological levels independent of trade.

This needs to be done. Nature could still take us out with an asteroid, supervolcano, or virus. We're lucky that hasn't happened yet.

Then, in a call with the new Ukrainian president - a

And this, in the eyes of the left, is grounds for Article I of the Impeachment of Donald J. Trump.

331 Ok Boomer is my fav new meme.

The context isn't that Boomers don't vote or aren't interested in politics but that they can't organically create memes.

Having a team of people to break meme building down to a process and then corporatize it to the masses is literally the opposite of how a good meme gets created.

Its terribly inauthentic which is why it so perfectly describes Warren.

The only way you can get a 40 year old Millenial is by robbing Generation X down to 12 years or so.

By any sane definition, a Millenial should be someone born before the new millenium (Which arrived on Jan 1, 2001) who became a legal adult after, placing it from 1983-2000.

Andrew was homeschooled and the only schooling was in art. The other Wyeth kids were, too, but only one was a genius. His father made up some excuse to keep him out of public school and then just never bothered letting him show up.

The train did not hit the car before Andrew's eyes. It was NC's grandson and namesake in the passenger seat, Andrew's nephew. The son of the daughter-in-law NC had had a flagrant affair with. The car was stopped on the tracks. No effort was made to get out of the car as the train approached.

414 There's an Andrew Wyeth painting I think the Dildo has featured here of a boy tumbling down a hill with a hand in his pocket. Andrew has said that the train crossing is just beyond that hill and that the hill is really a portrait of his father.

Even though he'd been tremendously successful from his debut (his first gallery show sold out, NC never sold out a show) you can see a difference in Andrew after his father's death. He's freer, bleaker, more himself.

488 435 Its very confusing, but from what I've been able to gather in the last 10-minuts seems like the standard definitions are along the lines of...

Boomers: 1946-1965 (19-years)
GenX (Baby Bust): 1965-1979 (14-years)
Millennials (GenY): 1980-1994 (14-years)
GenZ: 1995-2012 (17-years)
Gen Alpha: 2013-

Posted by: DocJ

It's very confusing because with Boomers it starts WHEN it happened and Millennials 20 years BEFORE it happens.

Billy Bones is based on an old guy with a peg leg who lived upstairs at what's known as the Pirate House in Savannah. Robert Louis Stephenson lived across the street and hung out there while writing Treasure Island.

I don't like to do the generational generalizations...but here I go.. What I notice most about most millenials, is their near pride in knowing so little about how things work other than a cell phone. Don't need to change a flat, just call someone. Don't really need to know or study anything just pop up a you tube video when you need it. They just sort of glide through their lives just assuming that ever advancing technology will make their lives easier an better. And old people are just losers who don't get it.

Yeah Flint being gay was stupid and shoehorned in, but the story was awesome and other than periodically (and at the end obviously) they didn't shove it in your face constantly. And yeah - there was plenty of disapproval - the entire reason Flint became a pirate was because people back in jolly ole' found out that he was, in fact, a butt pirate.

The main character of the series really is John Silver who was played brilliantly by the actor IMO.

Same. I've learned a ton from YT videos, just keep your BS filter active to know who you can trust. And there's an entire genre of older Millennials/tail-end Gen X buying land in the middle of nowhere and building a self-sufficient cabin that I feel would be of interest to the Horde.

At the time of the shooting, even after notifications and calls were made, the closest police and/or military units that could respond were over 4 hours drive away. And that's on relatively untraveled roads.

592 Its very confusing, but from what I've been able to gather in the last 10-minuts seems like the standard definitions are along the lines of...

Boomers: 1946-1965 (19-years)
GenX (Baby Bust): 1965-1979 (14-years)
Millennials (GenY): 1980-1994 (14-years)
GenZ: 1995-2012 (17-years)
Gen Alpha: 2013-

Posted by: DocJ

I saw a similar chart that goes:

Boomers: 1946-1964 [18 years]
Gen X: 1965-1976 [11 years]
Millenials: 1977-1995 [18 years]
Gen Z: 1996 - present [I guess us Xers luv us some baby making]

It's all abstraction by demography geeks. My youngest sibling is arbitrarily assigned to a different generation than I am. Despite being generated by the same parents.

I think you'll find that there's actually a lot of them doing that dirty work, it's just the media looks down on them and pretends they don't exist. Certainly not as many as there's demand for, but somebody's keeping your power on and Internet connected and increasingly it's people under 40.
